[Q] Using HD7 on Vodafone UK Network - HD7 General

Afternoon gents,
I am trading my iPhone 4 for the HD7 but i don't get very good signal with O2, so i was thinking about buying the handset unlocked and then putting a Vodafone contract SIM in it.
But, will this affect phone updates as carriers control WP7 updates?
Thank you.

You will have to wait for O2 to push updates as it will have an O2 ROM on it (O2 splash logo, locked yahoo search etc).
The only way around this is to flash a Euro branded ROM using Goldcard (exactly what I did) or one of the other methods floating around in the dev thread.

What about buying the phone from one of the East Asia compaines?
Found a site which offers the handset for £250 - checked reviews everywhere and all have recieved their items without fault.
One would assume that these devices would not have the O2 ROM?

No problem with Asia Phone
I bought my HD7 from an Asian shop on ebay. No problems whatsoever and I am also on Vodafone. I did use the disconnect trick and am now runing the nodo update with no issues. I also got my 16GB phone a LOT cheaper.
Crack on, it's well worth it!
Edit: Of course it was completely inbranded

What's the disconnect trick?
Did Zune tell you that an update was available?

You'll be fine i bought my via o2 but same reason due to poor data signal i ported over to vodafone, and it works brilliantly, update is fine, recently HTC push the NoDoUpdate via ZUNE and everything is runing smoothly.

Same here, I've been on Vodafone for years but pre-ordered a PAYG HD7 from O2 then just got it unlocked and has been great since.
Granted I did flash the latest Euro ROM using GOLDCARD so have no problems with updates or anything but all in all very much glad I sold on my iPhone 4 when I did, thankfully found someone nice to buy it and paid what I did as got a Unlocked one straight from Apple when they first came out.

If i bought a HD7 from the O2 shop, how would i go about unlocking it?
Would this also remove the O2 boot logo?
(You'll have to excuse my stupid questions, i do computers not phones )

You could either pay a unlock site to give you a unlock code or if you know a O2 Contract Customer they can fill out the unlock code request form online and request one for free. If you do it that way it may take two or three attempts as some guys email back and say no cos it's a contract phone but then somebody won't check as much and just issue the code, know loads of people done it this way, took 2 attempts to get mine.
As for the branding NO it would not get rid of it, to do that you would need to flash the phone with a different ROM like a HTC Euro ROM using such as the GOLDCARD Method. This will not make any difference to your unlock status so you know so you can't unlock it by flashing another ROM, and you can flash as often as you want and it won't relock the phone, once it's unlocked it's unlocked.

If you had to do the disconnect trick then it isnt de-branded.
The debranded HD7s got the update on the day of release.
I got my HD7 from O2, unlocked it through O2, and then left and went to 3.
I also did the debranded as said on here, which was nice and easy, and I got the nodo update on the day of release

I assure it is unbranded and the update was not available on the day of release as reported all over the web. I have since however rolled back the update and received the official update with HTC additions via Zune.

Unlock HTC HD7 on O2 PAYG

Hi Guys,
as some of you are aware if you purchase a 02 HTC HD7 (hd3) phone you can not request an unlock code before the 12 months of your PAYG term..... after 12months you would be able to request a unlock code.....
Now, as like me I cant wait to get my hands on this device, hence I'm ordering my phone from them on Monday 25th and unlocking the device on Tuesday !
I've used this site to unlock HTC phones ONLY and they always have worked, my latest one was my HTC HD2 from O2.
So, if you want to unlock your HTC HD7 (3) from O2... click on the link below and get your unlock code, please note at a cost of course !!!

Thanks for this. Are you affiliated to them? Just seems strange to use a trackable URL shortener for a standard URL.
I have seen confirmed reports that http://www.htcimeiunlock.com/ works to unclock the HD7. Any confirmation these guys definitely work?
+1 for htcimeiunlock.com. Worked fine for my UK O2 HD7
There are a lot of websites that can get your phone unlocked.
Those two methods are some of the best ones though.

How much is unlocking service from this website? Can't find the price there!
Thanks
@ curvyjomanjy: It cost me just over £16 to unlock from htcimeiunlock.
Paid by Paypal and received my unlock code within 10 minutes, excellent service.
The only branding is an O2 splash screen and an O2 theme ( which you can change ) other than that nothing.
Also O2 lock the search engine to yahoo, no google I'm afraid
O2 lock the search engine to Yahoo, or did you mean Bing?
The fact there is no option to change it from Yahoo, is disgusting. I'm actually surprised Microsoft allowed that under what is otherwise quite strict "Requirements" for using the OS.
if i get this phone, and unlock it, will o2 be able to tell? can they block the phone or anything silly like that? and if so what can i do?
and what would happen if there was a fault within 12 months, would o2 take back / exchange?

To be fair, O2 have been good with unlocking this phone through their own unlock scheme, unlike the Dell Streak exclusivity deal.
I've heard a lot of people requesting the code from O2 and getting it, but as I couldn't be done with waiting around, I got it down from a well known site on here RE the HD7 unlock for £16 or thereabouts.
By law, O2 can't stop you from unlocking, they can merely be a pain and not do it for you for free....so they're pretty good.
As for returns etc, they've been good with me in the past. You obviously have a few days to return it for a straight refund as well, which O2 honor where as some others try to fight this!
Overall, this is the one side of things O2 are normally very good for from my experience. Every other thing, they're a nightmare!
If I unlock it, how do I go about changing the network settings etc, does the phone automatically pick up the new connection settings ?

The HD7 is VERY good for this. When you enter the new sim, it gives you a list of drop-downs for the carriers....
ie.
Network settings
Please selet..
O2 Post Pay
O2 PAYG
Orange Post Pay
Orange PAYG
and automatically enters the APN details.

Well if there is a fault then you would need to deal with HTC and not O2 as HTC will be the ones to fix it. So unlocking it shouldn't matter.
i just bought new O2 HD7, and unlocked it using HTCimeiUnlock.com this guys are incredible in support, very professional, and charge you USD 25, but trust me they are every penny worth.
my phone is permenantly unlocked now, and works like charm.
thanks.
just used htcimeiunlock as well and worked perfect
great stuff
When I got my 3GS from O2 all i told them was that i needed it unlocked to use it when i go home on holidays and they did it for free

[Q] Updates available to unlocked HD7's?

I know there's talk of carriers blocking the recent update but my question is not specifically about carriers blocking updates but more so if people using HD7's unlocked to other carriers will get the update at all.
For example I bought my HD7 on Kijiji and it's branded to T-Mobile. I unlocked it and now use it on Wind Mobile here in Toronto (Canada). Wind Mobile does not offer this phone nor do they offer any WP7 devices.
So am I screwed? Or will I still be eligible for any updates?
I've asked this of windows mobile support, they didnt know but are looking into it and will get back to me
Even if it would be like that, I wouldn't worry too much as I'm sure that Devs like Football or Ansar will deliver the latest roms with the update in a near future.
I guess I'm worried because both my g/f and I are using our HD7's unlocked on Wind Mobile and neither of us received our pre-NoDo update yet
Hey Pistol i'm in the exact same situation as you, but from what i'm aware of Tmobile hasnt yet released the update, this was till yesterday. Someone on the tmo forum posted that they had takled to a tmo rep and she wasn't aware of any updates and that none had been issued out as of yet.

I hear ya except I'm not on T-Mo.. so I can't see that being my issue. Sure my HD7 is T-Mo branded but they aren't my carrier. So even if they "blocked" it I can't see that affecting me.
With all phones that I have used that were unlocked to a different carrier, they were all able to update over a wifi connection. So i dont think this phone will be any different. As long as the phone is able to go on the internet ether on wifi or data it will be able to update. But like i said this is just coming from my experience with other smartphones

that's if an update was available, my nokia e71 is 3 firmwares behind an unbranded device as the carrier branded fw never got updated so the checker never found an update. Just saying... I'm hoping the same as the rest or I'm gonna be stressed

Actually the Zune software will only update the phone if the notification has been sent, if the carrier is blocking the update (win serial tied to IMEI / IMEI assigned to carrier / Carrier says these phones don't get update due to testing or we don't want it) notification is never sent.
That's how they can stop the update going to all the Samsungs that haven't been updated, as they know which Windows serials are on those handsets.
My unlocked HD7 only saw the update after hard-wire connection to zune. It certainly was a direct download from microsoft, though as the previous poster noted, there may be a 0/1 flag by IMEI or at least by model as identified/verified in the zune client.
Install was quick and easy at 1100GMT of the 22nd in Taiwan.
Suprisingly, the phone itself made no indication an update was available.
Cheers
i called HTC and they told me that i dont have to worry about the update pushed last week... i will for sure get the march update.. and i have to wait for the march update..
my zune is saying my phone is up to date... i am using a non telco set sold by HTC reseller in singapore..
i hear so many story about the update: some say its for the first batch of devices, some say its a test, windows blog site says few days to few weeks every one will get the update..
i have reset my phone once and reloaded zune twice... and if i will not get my march update i will send my hd7 to HTC and demand 100% refund.. and buy a telco set as unlocked devices are use less in a way..

Good luck with getting a manufacture to give you a refund off a phone they didn't sell you there buddy.
I went to a meeting with 2 Microsoft reps in my area and they told me that the big update is coming March 7th. However, it will still be based on your carrier when that update will be pushed out to you as they may want to do some testing on their end first. This may delay the update by a few weeks depending on the carrier.
Still no update for me..
unlock HTC HD7 (no tmob branding) bought locally here in the philippines..
=(
well, some of my friends got the update and some are also still waiting.
I listened to the WP7 podcast over the weekend, and the program manager for WP7 said definitely that the update will be available for everyone, and one of their primary goals was to have no forking or fragmentation in WP7.
We'll see. I'm in the same boat, and I have not seen the update yet either.
well i am in the same spot but i am not too interested in this update i am hoping that we will all get the march update in march and not june or july
And still nothing for me either. It's been 8 days since the update released and my g/f's HD7 nor mine has been notified of an update.
I'd hate to think I'm going to have to flash my ROM everytime I want to get the latest updates. I couldn't imagine having to set up my phone from scratch after all the apps I've installed and settings I've adjusted.

What software version is your handset running now out of interest?
Updated
I have a HTC HD7 from O2 unlocked and used with Vodafone, just had update
connect to Zune and check for update and there it was. UPDATE AVAILABLE.
Done

Voda vs P4U on branding.

In the process of negotiating an upgrade deal. Currently on Voda.
Just wanted to know the difference between getting the phone from Vodafone or P4U.
Does the branding make much difference ??
branded phones seem to get updates later as they have to get branding added and in some cases don't get some update at all due to vodafone/networks not signing the ok on versions
Huge difference as stated above, update always comes late on branded phones, or never come.
But unbranded phone gets updates directly from HTC not vodafone so you are guaranteed to have them as soon as they are released.
Also, you have no bloatware on unbranded phones, and normally unbranded phones are unlocked on any network meaning when you sell the phone, it worthes more. But there are exceptions, my galaxy s3 lte is unbranded but locked to orange.
Anyway, if p4u's price is acceptable, better go with them. I sacrificed my 40% off discount with Orange and went upgrade with p4u even paying a bit more, but I never regretted.
Anyone actually got a branded phone?

I can't comment on voda but I've just recieved a branded device from EE and Tbh there is no bloat or pre installed crapps in fact it looks completely the way HTC intended. I'm guessing different networks will have different amounts of input but more are straying away from loading the handsets with crap for update purposes. If your rooted it don't matter anyway.

I read reports on the Vodafone forum of their customers receiving phones that have Vodafone on the bootscreen, definitely branded and I would definitely avoid that if you can P4U will be unbranded and will of course price match anyway.

Can confirm the Vodafone version has a Vodafone boot and shutdown screen. They haven't put any bloatware on it but it's definitely branded
Is there any branding on the phone itself or just software?
I have the "One" branded to Three. As far as i can see there are branded start and shutdown and two branded apps "Three Music" and "Three Games". They seem to have also installed the Amazon and Ebay apps.. I think given a chance i'll be installed the HTC standard build as soon as one is available... neither of the above apps are worth anything to me..

Sorry to clarify, the hardware is identical and has no Vodafone markings.
The phones software is Vodafone branded and comes with both their CID and usual bloat.
Just to throw this out there.
When I had a unbranded S3 Vodafone users got their official OTA updates before me.
Pretty sure you could use Kies to get it the same time if you really wanted.
With Samsung you would never be left hanging for a JB compatible HBOOT if you wanted it.

Anyone flashed a WWE RUU over Telstra

Hi guys
I have a black Australian unlocked Telstra HTC One, but there is no sign of any OTA's from Telstra any time soon...
I am wanting to flash a WWE RUU on to it so that I am not carrier restricted
Am I able to flash an Asian WWE RUU over the Telstra one? Has anyone done this yet?
I'm not exactly experienced in the world of Android HTC and their various flashing methods, but would flashing via the RUU be any different to rooting your phone and flashing another custom or stock ROM?
I only say this because my Telstra HTC One was rooted after I bought it and it is now running a custom ROM flashed via CWM recovery and no longer has any Telstra branding.
Edit: I now understand where you are coming from now. I wouldn't have thought you could flash an original ROM based on another phone CID and I can't imagine being able to change your CID without first unlocking the bootloader which kind of defeats the original purpose as you'll end up with a "tampered" phone one way or another.
You can do it but you'll need to change your CID to match the RUU you're going to run.
I'm not sure if you're able to do this with only boatloader unlock any more.

hey man, any luck finding a HTC One Telstra RUU yet? I'm in the same boat. ive been waiting 6 months and still no RUU, been emailing and calling HTC loads and nobody is bothering to help or care. I dont need the RUU, but its good to have just in case.
The only decent piece of info ive managed to get was about HTC Australia authorized repair center.
So basically the company that do repairs in Aus are FoneBiz. They told me today when i called them, that even if you have rooted/unlocked bootloader etc, they will try their best to do an In-Warranty service, but if their system wont recognize the phone, then it'll be an Out of Warranty service.
The Good news is that since the HTC One is pretty much unrepairable, as far as being able to actually get into the handset, is that FoneBiz will just do a full handset replacement. In-Warranty its obviously free, but Out of Warranty is only around $280. So essentially you get a brand new HTC One for less than $300.
So anyone with a Telstra handset who has broken/bricked HTC One, at least you know you can get a brand new replacement for under $300, possibly even free!

[Q] Nokia updates and unlocking

I just got my new lumia 1020 yesterday and Love it, however, its locked to Orange UK/EE.
The phone has no visible branding whatsoever, other than.. In Settings > About,, it says "Carrier: EE", which is greyed out.
My question is:
With 8.1 being only a few weeks away, If I pay to have the 1020 sim unlocked, will I receive updates from Nokia on Release day or will I still have to wait for EE.
I know with Android phones, the Rom itself is from EE so the proxys and APN is still greyed out after unlocking, so you have to unlock device and flash an open UK stock rom to fully unlock it.
Does it work that way with WP8 as well.
thanks
Unlocking will only allow you to use the phone on any compatible network, not just EE. Other than that, you'll still need to wait for EE to approve updates, unless (as you said) you flash a generic UK ROM.

Yeah, thought so.. Thanks for the reply. A few thoughts.. downside is, its quite expensive £30 - £35 to have it sim unlocked, which could go towards the camera/battery grip case. Nokias own App updates are coming through the store fine, so I might wait to unlock it and see if EE deliver 8.1 in good time, and get a nice case instead.
