if you are going to leave att i would suggest just about any android phone NOT on att

But I'm with ATT now ad my cotract ends in 2012 so forget the epic
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App

epic is only good rooted with roms flashed, maybe they say that about the captivate but the epic is worse. the launcher sux and cant have the icons changed. you can fix that with launcher pro but then keys and some widgets dont work so to update you need to switch launchers back. the mesaging app sux, it doesnt have the ability to multi select contacts like the other galaxy s phones. and you are getting basically the same phone as the captivate plus a ffc which i find useless because sprints network sux too much to video call. even there 4g if you find an area that has it is nothing special. rarely does it actually beat att's 3g in real world performance. that's if you can find a location that has wimax.
ok so the epic has a camera flash and a keyboard. the keyboard might be nice for games if that is important to you but the thing is just big. plus there are few situations that you need a camera flash and a led flash is enough to be effective.
with the right modem and kernel the captivate has the best call quality out of any phone i have ever owned period! i suggest the kc1 modem and speedmod of similar kernel on a ported rom of your choice. for that reason i will not recomend the inspire though the inspire specs out very nice and has comperable performance. i think it is a lesser phone in talk quality and build quality, but if camera flash and screen size and hspa+ are important by all means get one.
not sure about the quantum what is it?
i5? really on an androidforum? are you trying to get flamed? well apple has some high quality hardware/build quality but the iphone4 had a few mistakes like glass on both sides that is prone to breakage do to microscratches on the edges from using a mandatory case that prevents antenna issues. some of there efforts are too little too late and they still have a very limited os. untill they have some form of live homescreen applications i wouldn't. ios can support as some stock apps have live icons to show missed call quantity or unread messages, i also think the calandar icon shows date and folders show the contents. but steave jobs must not think it is important to the users. the ui gets cluttered untill you manually organize apps into folders. and the funny thing about note and reminders is you have to remember to read them or set alarms, i never set alarm because i never here them, so id rather have them stare me in the face in a widget so i can see it multiple times before it is etched into my memory. i need widgets or a smart phone is not worth haveing. [email protected] apple and steve jobs idea of a ui. iphones suck and macs suck harder!

Epic 4g is same as captivate with CDMA and slide keyboard...so its more of Sprint versus Att.
LG quantum is WP7, so its your to choose between OS...everyone here (including me) will tell you to opt for Android as its awesome...WP7 is behind android in terms of development..may be after another couple of year I would consider WP7 (if it survives till then), till then Android rocks
iPhone 5...I am sure till that comes out Android will reach another level of Awesomeness...So dont even mention that here....
For Inspire there is a thread in captivate general forums for pro and cons...U shud check that out...it has comparison between Cappy and Inspire...

[Q] 3G speeds on T-mobile

I am aware that T-mobile uses different 3G bands than does ATT. Most phones when unlocked are left to crawl on edge and cannot get 3G speeds when switched to another carrier. Being as the Captivate and Vibrant are essentially the same phone, would this be an issue. I've been on the G1 since it came out and I really don't like the iphone look of the vibrant. Was planning on getting a Captivate and unlocking, but not if I'll loose 3G.
Can anyone running an unlocked Captivate tell me if they're getting 3g on t-mo??
I would say no.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I believe it was engadget that said the Captivate can get t mobile 3g speeds but not vice versa.
Nope you can only get 3G on the vibrant unlocked to att not the captivate you can only get EDGE speeds on tmo with the captivate.
So basically:
Vibrant: tmo 3G
Att 3G
Captivate: tmo EDGE
Att 3G
So yes it might be an issue for you lol

Only thing I really don't like about the galaxy s's is lack of trackball. .. I really use that alot. Also physical keyboard is a plus while not a must for me.
Sent from my HTC Dream using XDA App
I hear you on the track ball. I almost went with the HTC Aria for that reason. But the Samsung GS phones are just so damn cool it's unbelievable! Really...... get the TMO version of GS and if you miss your track ball after 2 weeks then exchange it.

[Q] skype

Hello,
I got the Samsung Captivate phone from AT&T but I cannot get Skype on there, it is only available for Verizon android phones, but is there a way to get Skype on my AT&T phone nonetheless?
I think its only available on 2.2...so that might be your problem.

[Q] Can AT$T tell if you're running a custom rom?

I need to call 611 and gripe about some issues i'm having with my cappy. Does anyone know if at$t will run any sort of diagnostics remotely that will alert them that i'm running serendipity?

Nope. When they check up, it's usually just the IMEI. They ask what you're using (KB1, JH7...) but they assume most don't even know what that means or where to find that info.
I recently have called them from my phone and they didn't mention anything about it not being stock. When I look at my account online from my computer it still shows the captivate.

I'd be careful with Cyanogen though. When I flashed Cyanogen, I received an e-mail from Google saying "Welcome to Nexus S!". I didn't check, but I wouldn't be surprised as AT&T started listing my number online as a Nexus S or some other random Android phone that isn't the Captivate.
In fact, that same question occurred to me today, because I'm running Cyanogen on my HTC Inspire and I need to dial in so they can set up my Voicemail (for some reason, whenever I switch phones my voicemail gets screwed up).

Are you sure you got it on cyanogen, and not on supercurios port? Because the cm rom has correct model numbers, where as supercurios port is a direct rip from the Nexus S.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App
The email you receive is not from at&t and is just because the rom uses nexus s market foot print.
Sent from my Captivate using XDA Premium App
The answer is almost certainly no. There is a capability using device management tools to report back ROM details but right now the care reps don't have any access to it or any procedures that use it. They don't even have access to your IMEI so don't worry about custom ROMs unless you are physically returning the device.

What's more, based on my experiences with the Customer Service reps, most of them wouldn't care. The Front Office might, if you had to send in your phone, but every CS rep I've ever talked to has been mighty laid-back about the "rules."

I realize that. But because of the fact that it uses the Nexus S market footprint, it would also (logically) use the same Nexus S footprint over the AT&T network. Otherwise, what you said makes no sense.

Oh gosh that is so far from wrong it's not funny. "Care reps", otherwise known as technicians who fix your problems have every right to access your IMEI number without your consent. Your phone's IMEI is stored by AT&T as a ref number, and can be accessed from the AT&T database at any given time, even by the technicians.

There is an IMEI record for the device you purchased NOT what you are actually using on the network. There is also a TAC reference collected by OTA whenever the SIM goes into a new device, but the care reps (industry standard term, btw) have no scripts using it as far as I know. For example, AT&T still reports me as having a Bold 9700 on my 1st line when it has actually been a Cappy since August. Bottom line, AT&T generally doesn't give a crap what device you use.

Happened to me....I never used supercurios...only CM7.
Fot the OP I doubt they can tell....even less they don't care. I used the sim from an old Sony dumb phone in my old unlocked Nokia N79...and used an unlimited data plan for $15 and tethered.
So yeah, don't worry.

This could be my last visit with the Thrill

As some of you know me, I've currently been working with the Thrill and had a small ROM in the make which I decided to postpone.
I'm currently getting rid of my Cliq XT & G1 in trade for the lovely T-Mobile Galaxy S2, though I've an AT&T SIM Card.
I don't care much for waiting with the Thrill, Samsung is super close to Google & that means that Samsung definitely gets updates far before a lot of other companies.
Love you guys, it's just time to make progress, not circle jerk.
As rude as that sounds.

That's making a big assumption. T-Mobile may not even be thinking about JB for our phones. After all, they didn't sell very many of them to begin with. They may be focusing on getting updates out to their more popular phones (GSIII and Note II).
I would love to see JB from T-Mo, but i'm not holding my breath. Plus, with CM10 and Carbon ROM already at 4.2.2, it's not like we don't have decent JB options.
I would love to try a touchwiz based jb ROM though. But that means I would have to go back to stock unless ptmr wants to update his Jedi leader ROM if we even get jb... I don't see that happening though

S suite / touch wiz and wifi calling is what I miss on CM.
The closest thing I can suggest would be to flash the at&t version but use the "blaze" modem. If you do go this route make sure that the one that you flash is prerooted that way you can remove the at&t bloatware. Now you will loose the WiFi calling until someone can go through both two versions to find where the "WiFi calling" is located
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
Actually there are about 20k of this model in the wild. T Mobile made a deal with Samsung in order to get a jump on the Galaxy 4 they literally bought enough of this model to fill a warehouse. T Mobile then turned around and contracted their sales out to places like Costco and Wal-Mart where they are still being sold at a discounted price.

I wouldn't mind flashing the AT&T JB if it will fly - just to see what the feel is like.
I am quite dependent on WIFI calling, but I can always reflash the original and reload my apps I guess.
if anyone has already done this: if there are kinks, could you please post back?
If it does one out I would like to see what is different because from what I understand the Canada version has the pop out browser which the att version doesn't meanwhile both are missing the nav panel and multi Window

Wifi Calling is the only one I miss with CM based AvatarROM. The S Suite are just something there that I used 10% of the time. And I hated touchwiz. It makes my phone sllloooowwww and buggy. I'm loving my ROM now its fast, although not as smooth but still very stable.
I agree with that statement and I have wondered is there a way to compare the touchwiz from the att room and the touchwiz from tmobile to find the difference? I would be more than happy to wade through the code myself is someone could point me into the proper direction.....

just reading around the web, the JB release I think is inevitable. i717, s3 and s2 are out, the international version N7000 is out in some parts of the world [not all], so, its just t-mo that is slow at this point. could be any day, any hour.
then we'll all figure out what we hate about it and resume complaining....
Good point......

I'm frankly on the fence here - reading through the AT&T version group's collective notes - I dunno what the gain is with JB.
that its new? there are a number of folks that have had troubles [this is not unusual - check google for any sort of notes on 'upgrade to jelly bean'] - shorter battery life, jerky performance, hangs, lags.
I am VERY happy with the stock/rooted/debloated performance I'm getting.
we just picked up a GS3. I was set to be dazzled by its performance etc and spent hours getting it nuked to the bone, then installing, rooting, debloating. To me, its not worth the extra money compared to what I paid for the note 1. there is neglible performance difference [i'm not gaming, so take that into consideration]. side by side, any fool on earth would pick the Note's display, not just because its bigger but it looks startlingly gorgeous next to the GS3. The GS3 had a bunch of wifi connectivity issues. I don't know if I have them all squashed yet or not - jury is still out.
there's more "interference ware" on the GS3 - things that are scanning in the background to tell you all sorts of dangers are lurking. some I could uninstall safely, some not. the Note, the way I have it config'd, is 'quiet' by comparison.
battery life looks like the Note wins so far. will know better once the GS3 is finalized and real use occurs a lot.
if it were strictly my call, I'd trade the 3 for another note 1.
jellybeans or not.... i prefer beefsteak.

Thats true but we will always have problems until they release the official JB, we all suffer from the random reboots followed by the blue screen when running these roms....Im using rooted stock, that way I know everything works instead of finding out when I need to use a feature.
