official update through Kies (program from samsung).
As for root, use superoneclick (SuperUser).
And I believe there's a market app that will give you the code for the unlock (can't remember what it's called).

Hey now, I replied 1st haha
Although, thx for the app name

SIM unlock it first with SUPERONECLICK...save yourself the hassle afterwards

Please take the time to do a search before posting as this could have easily been answered by doing so.

So the way to go would be,
1.Update to (official) 2.2 using kies
2.Then Use the SuperOneClick v1.9.1 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682 to ROOT the device
3.And finally find an app to perform the sim-unlock
Have I got it right ?
Thanks for all your comments, I should have searched a bit more before posting,, I appreciate all your replies

Indeed, that is right.
The whole process takes 10min tops

You can do the sim unlock at any point (as long as your rooted). Once you do it it's unlocked.
I did mine just to show off to my tmobile friend that I could use his sim. I've flashed a lot since then, on gingerbread right now actually, still unlocked.

Thank you BWolf56 ,studacris n Pirateghost for the support, I feel confident to go ahead with that method

Hi again, My captivate has:
Baseband Version - I897UCJH7
Build Number - ECLAIR.UCJH7
I am looking at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=761751
If I follow as I stated above and first Update to 2.2 (official), Next Root it with Supr1Clik, and then Try to Unlock it (like in link above) could it give me any errors (at the unlock stage)?
I read that 2.2 limits certain unlock methods(like it changes certain directories), I'd like to know if this could affect me in the process? You know like screw me up at the last moment hehe

I tried https://market.android.com/details?id=com.clarkehackworth.SamsungGalaxySUnlock made by DaGentooBoy but it didn't work, it said no codes.
And now I am looking at Samsung Galaxy S Unlock Froyo https://market.android.com/details?id=com.clarkehackworth.SamsungGalaxySUnlockFroyo by DaGentooBoy
BTW I have not yet rooted or updated to official 2.2, still running 2.1 ECLAIR.UCJH7
Kindly refer to my previous post and help me find a solution. ty

SGS unlock (your 2nd option) works great.

you are wasting your time going through all those steps
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
while still on JH7, use SUPERONECLICK to both, root, and unlock
do NOT update to 2.2 before you unlock it

Yes, you can unlock it with superoneclick as well.

I really didn't know I could network unlock it with SuperOneClick,
But Even if it could perform the unlock I don't actually know how to, I don't see it mentioned in the page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682

Is there any guide to root JP3 specifically? Because i can´t find anything specifically to JP3 as i find to older and newer firmewares...
If there is there a guide to root JP3, can you point it to me???
Thanks
Now, this is weird, I'm quoting myself:
Darkstriker said:
1.What is root/rooting?
root is the user account in Linux with all privileges. The root user can edit anything on the system. For safety reasons, users do not have all those privileges. When you root your phone, you will gain write access to areas of the phone you couldn't previously access and are allowed to run more commands in the terminal. There is a tutorial for rooting in the Post #2 and a link to a OneClick Utility in Post #5.
If all of this means nothing to you then you are probably wise to NOT root your phone. Mistakes using root can break your phone very easily. (Usually, but not always, these can be solved with a reflash)
Note: At the time of writing, the Froyo firmware XXJP3 firmware has only been rooted with a complete firmware flash by MoDaCo.

I know what is rooting a device...
I use Linux at home.
I just can't find a guide specifically to JP3...
Some say that the JPC guide is good to root JP3 but i did want confirmation...
Cheers
I can't confirm that. It might be true but I guess the solution from MoDaCo is just so much simpler.
Search the forum. Theres a root for JP3. I think you need to flash with odin then apply update.zip and flash back.
Or you can try this rom, jp3 pre-rooted http://android.modaco.com/content/s...insecure-boot-clockworkmod-recovery-for-odin/
Here's the specific guide with downloads for JP3.
FF
Why would you want jp3 jpc is far better ....

Well i guess that for jpc i need some extra code after flashing and as i'm new to this i don't want to take any risks...
thanks anyway...
Well, i've used the pre rooted JP3 and looks like it's working fine...
Thank you all...
Tell me something else
The terminal emulator app is not working well... Spaces are not accepted and some letters don't appear in screen as i write them...
Is there anyne else that works good???
Thank you
Bumping my question...

[Q] [URGENT] Odin question (doesnt specify anywhere))

Hey guys ive been trying to get all i need to flash xxjpy firmware just one question?
i saw (by complete accident i might add) a guide to ''how to flash with odin'' and the guy or whatever said i need an unlocked sgs - simlock free phone as it wer, is that true? Mine is a branded vodafone 100% locked on it. Will something unspeakable happen if i try to flash it this way? (Brand new phone so im kinda nervous)
Any help may be exchanged for sexual favors xD
ps: Only hot women are elligible for the above
It's probably safer to unlock your phone before you flash it using ODIN, for obvious reasons..
P.S. I pass on thy offer.
EDIT: To unlock your phone, try this tool: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
So i should unlock then flash with odin......ok
one last questio Is it a permanent unlock or is it more like the iphone ultrasn0w type of deal? which needs to be unlocked everytime you update/restore?
Might be easier just to reg hack kies to get xxjpy?

which rom version are you on now ? you can always get the same version from samfirmware.com(you need to sign up to d/l the firmware) that your currently on.
If you really need to back up your rom then you'll need ROM manager & the phone needs to be rooted as well, the easiest way is to use One click root.
You don't need to have an unlocked/unbranded phone to use odin, you just need to have kies installed for the usb drivers & for kies to be exited whilst using odin.
Here is a pretty good guide for how to use odin, take you time read it throughly, make sure you understand it & remember your doing this at your own risk

[ROOT] for 2.2.1/2.2.2 GingerBreak APK

Done!
Finally, the root is available for firmware 2.2.1 and 2.2.2 for Optimus One
This program will help get us these rights.
What to do this?:
1. Downloading Gingerbreak (Disable the antivirus just in case)
2. Dump the our program and set
3. At LG Optimus include debug USB. To do this, go to Options -> Applications -> Development -> Debugging USB. Put a tick.
4. Make sure that the flash drive was inserted and worked
5. Run Gingerbreak
6. Choosing a Root Device
7. Wait a few minutes. If there are no problems, then the device will reboot (note that rebooting can take a long time, so we are waiting)
8. Rejoice!

[Q] Factory Reset and rooted /unlocked SGS

I have a question and can't really find what I'm looking for. Sorry if this has been asked before.
I have a stock SGS with 2.3.3 from Rogers. I rooted with "super one click 2.2" and then unlocked it with "Galaxy S Unlock (from the market)". Everything went well and all it working great but I want to clean up the phone now by doing a factory rest to clean it up. My question is will I brick my phone?

SIM Unlock Without Rooting?

Hi,
Is there any way for me to SIM unlock my galaxy s without rooting my phone or doing anything too risky?
Many thanks in advance!
Rooting a Phone isnt very risky and needs only 2 Minutes of your time: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S_Plus/GT-I9001#Rooting
Theres a very good guide and easy to understand. I rooted my i9001 that way with a minimum of knowledge.

You can download free from Play store SGS Unlock for Sim unlock apps and also other links on My Android Collections below
Try this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1731931
I don't think you need root for this method, but you really should get it to back up your efs folder.
