So I just signed a 3 yr contract with Rogers and they are sending me an X1 in the mail. I'm having second thoughts about X1, after hearing about all the problems about it. I might send it back when it arrives and grab an Iphone 3G for the same price under the 15 day grace period. I've had a jailbroken Ipod touch for a while now, and I'm really impressed at what I can do with it and all the incredibly useful apps that you can get. i might add that I'm generally an Apple hater, but I loved this product. I initially got it for personal/car music, but it has been great as an organizer, surfing web, video, games, etc.
I thought the X1 looked like it would be an Iphone killer. It had better battery life, better camera, higher network speed, and simply looks better. The crumbling housings, and keyboard failures are HUGE turn-offs for me. I don't mind a couple of aesthetic cracks after prolonged usage, as long as it doesn't affect the functionality of the device, and if the keyboard problems aren't major.
If I do trade it for an Iphone 3G, I could jailbreak it. I could then get rid of the Ipod touch and ultimately have a good all in one device with it. I worry about the battery life because of this though. Also, the Iphone has the great "Navigon" GPS app.
So what I'm asking is:
1. are there any counter measures you X1 owners take to make it last for a very long time? (i.e. keyboard, housing)
2. would you guys have preferred a jailbroken Iphone over an X1? (can anybody comment on the battery life of the Iphone compared to the X1?)
3. how would you guys compare both devices' features, app availability, and just sheer lasting quality? (it seems like SE is cutting off support for the X1)
Overall, I love the X1's form factor, look and feel, specs, but I need this phone to last. The Iphone on the other hand, has an abundance of useful apps, smooth operation, reliability, customization, and continued software updates, but I heard some things about bad battery life, and I really hate that signature "Apple Iphone" look.
I'm sorry for the super long post, but this is an important choice I need to make, so any insight would be appreciated.
1. the cracking issues are mostly aesthetic, and internal ones at that. They don't impair functionality (unless the crack is in the stylus slot or something). You usually don't even see them unless you remove the battery cover. speaking of which, the battery cover's paint peels of easily, but they're cheap enough to replace, or you can easily refinish or repaint it. My X1 is now black and candy apple red (inspired by the Satio). Looks really, really, really great.
the keyboard wears out after about 6 months or so. All you need to do is clean it (from the inside, which can be a hassle if you don't want to) and it's good as new
the flex cable, though, is a more serious problem. if it wears out, you absolutely need to replace it or you won't be able to use landscape mode
2. Given the above, I still prefer the X1 over the iPhone. Better apps (75% of apple apps are "fart" apps), better screen, multitasking, stylus support, Flash, battery life, customizable look (manila, SPB, pointui), XDA support, etc. However, since you're used to your iTouch, you won't need to learn a whole new OS.
3. I plan to use the X1 for a year more or so. I get enough support here at xda-devs such that my phone has yet to be connected to SEUS at all (my old k850 would get SEUS once a month). I'm using WM "6.6" (6.5.3) while the newest phone that you buy right now only comes with 6.5.
4. I agree. I also don't like the iphone for the main reason that everyone wants one just to "look cool"
If you're into customizing/tinkering, get a WM phone. If you just want a phone out of the box with minimal fuss, get the iphone. And if you decide to go the WM route, I suggest you take the iphone, sell it, then get an HD2. the X1 has depreciated so much that it's only worth $200

It's a 09W44 batch and has a black plastic frame under battery cover instead of grey. It also has the "new design" frame; did I get a good unit?
I can see myself using the keyboard a lot for text, so I don't want it to fail. I really want to like this phone, but keyboard and flex cable failures sounds ridiculous for such an expensive phone. Are these occurrences uncommon, or are they inevitably going to happen to all units?
The iPhone's on screen keyboard works great, and I can't see of that ever failing. So what can I do with the X1 that makes it better than a jailbroken iPhone? The iphone has a lot of useful apps such as one for traffic in my city, and a public transit schedule; does windows mobile have good apps that can do this too? Also the ipod music player transitions between tracks a lot smoother than the X1. Battery life on the X1 has been great so far.
I really do want to keep the X1, and if I do, I might get a nice case to protect it. I've been using Sony Ericsson phones for years until my last one broke and was forced to use an old moto razr (which is VERY durable phone compared to my last SE). I might just go ahead and risk keeping the X1 and fix whatever happens down the road. Is this what most of you guys are doing as well? Is it worth doing this over getting and iPhone?

as much as i don't like the iphone - it would be the better choice. and harveydent's idea is good: get the iphone, sell it and buy a hd2!
apart from the hardware-issues already mentioned, with the x1 you get outdated specs and no more software-support by SE. (no firmware-update, no upgrade to winmo 6.5.x) they let this phone die end of march 2009 (last firmware) to protect and sell the x2. (you don't get the new x2-panels officially for example)
apart from officially running winmo 6.1 and the (in my opinion) useless panels the firmware is the major problem: it still has performance-problems. (meaning slow graphics drivers etc...) this is not really fixable with custom-roms. there's room for some tweaking (a lot, actually), but if the foundation isn't right...
sure, you can flash the newest winmo-leaks with the newest sense 2.5 (i know i do). but be prepared for a steep learning curve and lot of frustrating bug-fixing. (more often: wait for the cook to fix it with a new rom-version) there's always something not working, one bug get's fixed, another shows it's ugly head. and the endless flashing and hardreseting...
it's only for the past two weeks that for the very first time i have a rom where really everything works and which is running at great speed. but: i own this phone since march 3rd, 2009!
sure, i know a lot now about winmo 6.x, i can edit "light stuff" in manila-files, i have completely customized this phone to my likings. but apart from selling it i didn't really have a choice.
to think i'd have to start fresh now, with all these different winmo-branches and manila-builds out there - i wouldn't do it, knowing what i know now.
get the iphone and stay with it. or sell it for the hd2, it will get all 6.5.x-updates and maybe even an update to winmo 7.
The iPhone has more functionality these days due to its app store and accessories. Whether its making work related databases, or doing offline reading of the NY Times or most big periodicals, the iPhone can or can do it better than WM.
Just to drill into the 2 examples I used: I developed database software for medical research, and did so exclusively using WM. The software side of WM is terrible thesedays! The most recent database applications for WinMo are seriosly old, and developed when WM5 was around. On the other hand, database applications are new, easy to use, and much cheaper.
Example 2. You want to read the NY Times on your airplane ride? Have fun with RSS, and only picking up 2-3 lines of articles before you need online access. The nice thing about the iPhone is the major support for it from every company, so you just download the NY Times app, and all content for the past few days or however long you specifiy is available for free.
Yes, these are specific examples, but they should shed light on the current situation. The flip arguement whcih I'm sure will be expanded upon is mainly agaisnt iPhone lack of customisation, lack of standards support for thigs like bluetooth stacks, microSD, homescreen widgets, and being locke down by Apple.
Its up to you to figure out what's most important. Altough, if I were on Rogers, I would wait for the X10, which should have the best of both worlds...
i just got an x1 from rogers as well, and i too was concerned with the flex cable and keyboard problem but i decided to keep it anyway. One thing i did notice was that the flex cable seems to be reinforced now, not 100% sure though. Ive seen many pictures of the flex cable and its supposed to be yellowy orange. I used a flashlight to peek under the screen and its exactly that, except 90% of it is covered with a grey vinyl looking tape. Dont feel like taking it apart to make sure though.

What a sigh of relief... speaker sounds great, no chance for cable issues, no possibility of phantom cracks, lots of apps, don't have to make 5 clicks just to turn my Bluetooth on/off, fast and lots of storage space. Best of all, I won't have to deal with incompetent SE support reps!

Speakers are terrible on both devices, no cable issues, the Xperia X1 has lots of storage space too.

I don't know about the flex cable but I'm facing problems with the keyboard (and so are a lot of people from other forums I've been to as well). Got it repaired before the warranty expired but once again it's giving problems, such that I have no confidence in getting a X2. As much as I like having a keyboard, I might just go for a phone without a keyboard next, and the X10 and iPhone are two possibilities. So personally, I wouldn't recommend keeping the X1.
Thanks for all the great replies guys. Everybody (on here and IRL) is pretty much telling me to get the iPhone. One friend told me to just swallow my pride and get the iPhone because of its huge support base. After playing with the X1 some more, I found I really love this unit. It feels solid in my hands, but there are WAY too many reports of it's durability for me to trust it. It would be the best device, IMO, if it weren't for these problems.
I almost decided that I was going to keep the X1 for strictly phone, text, email, GPS, and mobile web purposes. And since I already have an iPod touch, I could use it for music, movies, and apple apps. I'd just be missing out on the GPS and 'away-from-wifi' web browsing, but the X1 does these just as well, right? Again, this gives me more to carry, but what I gain is a better multimedia player on the iPod, and better hardware on the X1 (camera, 3.5G phone, keyboard). I also won't be wasting battery listening to music on my phone. Almost the best of both worlds.
BUT after reading more replies, I just find it hard to justify having two devices when I could get everything I need on one simple unit (the iPhone). And the fact that they are both the same price, but you get way less hardware specs on the 3G. I'm now completely on the fence about this.

Also, I found the speaker on the X1 sounded clearer, but the iPhone speaker was louder but lacked clarity.
X1 over iPhone
Well - that new design which is being delivered for a couple of month now does have a stronger keyboard-cable. We did order 4 devices for my employees a couple of weeks back and they all have the new design and the new cable. So if you have the new design, I would not worry about durability.
Since X2 has been announced the x1 has really dropped in price so it was a cheap pick up. Here in Germany the iPhone is much higher in price and only comes with ridigulous bundles.
I had my casing replaced (slight cracks) after almost two years of hard work every day and the keyboard-cable has been replaced also (warranty). I did not have any functunality issues up til now - the crack was just optical, but they replaced the casing anyway. Thanks SE.
Support personal from SE is not worth a call - but that is what XDA is for
Apple does have cool looking stuff (my wife got an iphone as a gift and is cursing because she misses the keyboard), but for my day to day work (Appointments, contacts, gathering data in Word or Excel...) I always would prefer WiMo up til now. Taking a look at the app-store does not make me jealous - most of it is unneccesary or just a waste of time.
So I stay with my X1 for now and wait for the next generation WiMo phones with WiMo7 or iPhone 4 - both should arrive end of 2010 or start of 2011.

Don't know if this will help but I wrote the following 10 months ago. At that time, I had both units, Iphone and X1A. Sorry for my english.
POST 1: some of the main X1 pro and cons
I have the american version (X1A) for 3 months now. This is my first WM phone and I am very picky with technology.
I wanted that phone so bad that I spent a lot of time and money to get it.
I really like that phone for all the reasons mentionned above and more. What I couldn’t find when browsing the reviews was a comprehensive list of the cons of this model. Here are my points:
1- Camera:
Not good enough: too slow to load, too slow to take a picture, requires favorable ambiant light condition to take a sharp picture.
Video acquisition is undersampled making your video files not very smooth.
2- Battery Life:
I usually disconnect the charge in the morning. I use the phone every day. I’d say average of 200 Mb of data per day, 30 minutes of voice per day, 15 minutes of gaming. At this rate, my battery drops dead at 6 PM. I should lower my data usage but this is why I’ve purchased the phone, I don’t want to minimize the data consumption accordingly to the specs of the phone.
Edit: same thing with the Iphone, actually same thing with any phone I know
3-WVGA screen:
By far the best screen ever, but too few applications supporting this resolution so far. This is actually frustrating because most of my apps runs VGA on 2 third of the screen, leaving one third blank. Ugly.
4- Speaker phone quality:
Mono… Sound quality is poor. I’ve compared side by side with the N95, it’s night and day. You'll also find an app to crank up the volume if you need it.
Everything else besides that is great. It is the best phone I have ever seen and I do not regret it. It is really fast, the keyboard is great, perfect for e-mails, internet browsing (Skyfire browser supports flash!!!), media handling and playing. Resistive touch screen is better than capacitive touch screen (you have to install a couple of apps first that give you feedback when you touch the screen and that minimize the pressure you have to put on the screen).
I have looked for this phone for months, I’ll be glad to share my experience to anyone who has questions about it.
POST 2: Iphone VS X1
It’s a difficult comparison. The two phones are very different because of the operating system. You can’t really compare them. The X1 is definitely orientated for business use and computer nerds that like tweaking their phones. The Iphone is orientated toward users that likes having a finished well working product
It is like comparing a PC and a gaming console. The gaming console will always have better game versions but you will be able to do more stuffs with the PC besides gaming.
To summarize:
Iphone apps and responsiveness is faster. Which makes it more comfortable
Iphone screen is larger, more convenient for movies and watching pictures.
X1 has a better resolution allowing it much sharper screen details.
But the Iphone OS is limited. As always with Apple, the product is a black box. Even if you jailbreak it, there is too many frustrating issues. The copy paste was one of these frustrating examples (fixed in 3.0).
I think all Iphones users experienced this frustration at least one time. There is something we’d like the Iphone to do but it can not because of limitation on the OS. Like GPS navigating, Skype, copy paste, TV streaming, custom ring tones, customs background etc etc… We have to wait Apple to fix them and that’s the big difference with Windows Mobile. Windows Mobile users will have these frustrations sorted out by themselves. There will be always a way to fix this and that , thanks to XDA-developper .Users will download the right patch or the right application. Finding it and installing it might be a nightmare for some users. Can be fun for others. But it will never be as easy as the Iphone app store.
Finally, I prefer my X1 because I am using it for business. I couldn’t do that with the Iphone.I like the X1 behaving like my PC. I have all my sales products/ customer databases / pricelist and Presentations on my X1.
Because it is Windows Mobile, I am browsing the files as I do on my PC and I like that. I instantly answer customers and attach brochures or documents along with my e-mails. I don’t use my laptop as I used to.
These are things I couldn’t do with the Iphone.
I would go back with the Iphone if Iphone would have a keyboard and Windows Mobile on it. But that will not happen so I am staying with my X1. It freezes sometimes, I have to reinstall some apps, I have to constantly monitor what goes in and where to optimize its speed. That sounds microsoft ****? Well it is, and I am so used to it that I feel good with it. Because it offers me endless possibilities to tweak it.

but after i sent mine in for warrenty repair, i decided to put a bit of tape on mine to reinforce it anyway! i only did this because i was changing my housing as well. (nothing wrong with it, not a single crack after a year, i just scratched it up when i dropped it on the floor xD
I love my X1, and XDA keeps it updated, who cares about Sony Ericsson Updates.
I say keep the X1, and use your iPod too!
@RacloOne I agree a 100% what you say, Although Alot of your problems you mentioned with the X1 have easy software [email protected] I've had my X1i(My first WM phone ever) sense October 2009 and have never regretted the decision . This is my personnel opinion of the Iphone, I respect the gaming of the I-phone and how smooth the UI is but other than that it's a over hyped fashion statement. Majority the apps are useless and another way Apple can drain money out of you something they do best, The way they lock down/ Limit their OS is restarted. I find it silly to buy an I-phone when your Ipod touch is the same thing except it doesn't make calls. I'm was coming from the Rokr E6(A linux based phone/my first touchscreen phone ever) and people warned me about how bad WM is Bla Bla Bla, But I went ahead and bought it anyway because once I learned the ins and outs of WM like I did with Linux I would be able to have the phone live up to it's potential and it has. I'm not going to lie when I first got my phone it froze alot but that was because of the the sh!tty 6.1 after I got rid of 6.1 all that has stopped, As for the scratches I have dropped my phone a couple of times so I obviously expect scratches lol. Reading this thread is the First I heard of this Flex cable issue but looking at it seems mine is reinforced so idk but no problems at all up to now. Honestly bro I say keep your X1 because it's worth it and if you do I would personally help you with any issue because most likely a new user like yourself would have similar questions/ issues like me when I first started off.
Here is my summary of my major problems with the X1 and the fixes. You can see that for me, the only big problems that can not be fixed are the sluggishness and the camera.
1. Finger unfriendliness --> SPB Mobile Shell 3.5 + WM 6.5.5 (great combo)
2. Screen sensitivity --> X1 SoftTouch tweak
3. Small messed up screen area and messed up LED --> Repaired by SE
4. Keyboard letter repeat problem --> Repaired by SE
5. Sluggishness --> Tried all tweaks (slightly helpful), tried overclocking (great, but unstable), but still takes too long to accomplish certain tasks
5. Blurry indoor photos --> Set to sports mode + LED on but pictures too dim
Overall I'm very happy with the X1, but wish the X2 could have nailed all those problems. Oh well, waiting a year or two...
Thanks to you guys, I've decided on keeping the X1. The fact that I can come to XDA for support, potentially stronger unit, and that I have the iPod touch to feed my apple needs. I'm just glad to hear that some of you have owned the X1s for a long time and still working.

How did you get a warantee repair after two years? Or was that only for the keyboard cable?

So you guys have had the HD7 for a while now. I know it has bugs at the moment. Its to be expected as the OS is still new.
But would you buy it if you knew what you knew now?
Yes, most certainly. Loving WP7 completely. In terms of hardware, the size of the screen is the deal maker for me. But a surprisingly nice addition is the kick stand, which is both effective, useful and invokes an 'oooh that's cool' from people I show the phone to.
I did buy it, then I returned it.
And got an Omnia 7.

Absolutley I would, yes, there are are few niggles but this is version 1 of the software and a brand new device FFS. Apple are STILL having problems withe the iphone 4 even now (alarms cannot deal with move to GMT from BST for example). With WP7 you are buying into one of the most promising new mobile phone OS's of recent times IMHO, with the HD7 in particular, you are getting a cool big screen device from a company that has built up a good name for itself in the industry. I currently own the HTC Desire and the HTC HD7. I will be keeping the Desire only until the Kindle app and HTML5/ Flash land for WP7, then that will go on Ebay.
My only fear is that because MS decided to launch without one or two features (Flash/ CutnPaste and turn by turn Nav) it will get hammered by the critics in the tech press and be stillborn. This would be a tragedy - the more competition there is in the smartphone space the better for the consumer.
I also hope the handset manufacturers give it the attention it deserves, recent reports on build quality issues with the HTC Trophy do not bode well

Ive had mine a day and love it. Was running andoird on my HD2 previously and loved that. But I love the HD7 more. Ye the app market isnt as large as the other major two OS but I can live with that and times will change.
I had an iphone last year and once you get over the intiial hysteria of having millions of useless apps to download and amuse yourself with its not so important.
Ive not had any bugs with the HD7 yet. What issues have people come across.
My only gripe is that Im stuck with crappy Vodafone until 2012

Sure, I loved it in the first 2 days but these 4 main reasons cropped up:
1. The phone would crash/lockup, it did this about 6 times in the week I had it.
2.The hard buttons (on/off, volume, camera) had NO click to them, they were completely soft, so I ended up pressing them all the time by accident, I launched the camera so many times when just holding the phone.
3.The case I was sold with it from the O2 store actually marked the back of it. ( a Leather one with a strap you pull to get it out, don't buy it)
4. I had huge doubts about the overall quality of the device, I really really don't think it would last for 18 months.
I understand 1 (possibly) and 3 were not the fault of the actual device but after issues 2 and 4 cropped up I just decided to return it and got a Omnia 7 instead.
So far for me the Omnia 7 is much better, seems much more higher build quality and its made from metal, the buttons have a nice satisfying click to them, and the screen is just gorgeous, aswell as it being much faster at loading apps and games.
The only reason I took the HD7 over the Omnia 7 in the first place was the double storage but that's not worth the trade off for me.

Having bought an iPhone when they first came out and then giving it to one of our engineers within a week (he thought all his birthdays had come at once!) as deemed useless for true functionality compared with WM6. And then enjoyed my Touch HD I was in eager anticipation of the HD7.

I have been using email on my mobiles for years and have to say that the HD7 is by far the most brilliant device for actually 'doing business' on the move - big & bright and cool to use
Edit: Forgot to mention - the Office Hub is a 'killer': Was at a presentation yesterday with 2min before I stood up and realised I needed info from a spreadsheet which I thought was on my HD7 (but wasn't) - it took me 30secs to get it! - try doing that with an Android or iPhone...

The only issue I have so far is the battery life but I've only done a couple of charges so hopefully that will improve.
It's early days for me but at the moment I am happier than I thought I would be. I'm trying Zune pass at the moment and really liking it. Maybe I didn't need the 16GB after all.
I though about the Omnia 7 but didn't want another 18/24 month contract and the PAYG prices being thrown around were a lot more expensive. Plus, I couldn't actually find anyone selling it on PAYG!
Had it for a bit now, had a few bugs happen, but I would not change it for any other phone out there.
Omnia 7 is a 100% no go for me because of the 8gb memory, I only have about 500meg left on my HD7 and will be ugrading to 32gb asap.
Im still not convinced in AMOLED screens, the colours never look right to me and the edges arnt smooth (looking at my sisters and aunts desires) The look stunning, but they dont look real if that makes sence? I would have loved to have an SLCD in it though. But to be honest the HD7 screen looks fantastic because I have the backlight on 100% all the time.
Battery life isnt that bad, it could be better, but it IS better than my HD2's was.
Biggest niggle is bluetooth audio streaming of music doesnt seem to be as high as quality as my HD2s theres everso slight distortion on high notes. Not that noticable, but enough to niggle me.
Once the updates start to roll out its going to be an incredible device.
Im wondering if an update will be rolled out when the US launch happens? why else would it be delayed? or at least im hoping the promised 60 xbox live that were supposed to be available at launch will be availble at the american launch.
Overall best phone I have ever used, the user experiance is fantastic, its just so nice to use every day, and that completely overruls any niggles I have had, which no doubt will be sorted very soon.
Had mine unlocked for 24h now and just learning the OS but what i'm seeing is fantastic! I've come from a HD2 where as soon as i got it i flashed a custom rom then ran adroid on it for ages but now i could never go back even after 24h!!!
there are a few niggles, coming from android where you had settings for everything there does seem to be a real lack of options just the basics to to get you through, i also cant see how to add a picture to a contact who isnt on my facebook?????
i agree with whats been posted before, this OS has the potential to be the best one out there it just needs to grow.
I've had mine for 2 weeks now and love it! Yes some things are missing and there are a few bugs in the OS, but I'm willing to persiverre because what it does give it does really well.
I had an HD2 with Energy's custome roms for a year now and I am so over HTC Sense (I used earlier versions on my Diamond and Orbit too)and now the "new" HTC apps looks very dated amongst the WP7 Metro apps.
Email, something I could not really get working very well on my HD2, runs like a dream on WP7 and I'm turning into a sick email junkie (help!).
As for the screen, everyone keeps knocking this phone in favour of the Samsung, but in reality, the screen on the HD7 is better than the HD2 and can hold it's own. Might not look as good next to a Samsung, but who cares? Are you going to hold an HD7 and Samsung next to each other 24/7? No? Then you won't notice the difference.
Is the email better on the WP7 than Android. The email on Android drove me up the wall with its bugs and weird behaviour. I have seen a few people on this thread mention positively the email so I am hopeful.
Yes, without a doubt, sure it has a few bugs that Microsoft can fix, but these will not stop me loving this device, never going back to an iPhone again, I'll be sticking to Windows Phone or Android devices from here on in, I had the 3GS then the iPhone 4 and now it's on Ebay as I got bored with it

You can pinch and zoom with HTML email which is fantastically useful, and keeps the email as the sender intended. From my understanding (Neowin WP7 vs Android Communication Comparison) Android doesn't do this.

The main problems I had with Android was that I often had issues setting up POP email accounts on it. Also could behave oddly when picking up messages, I used to get phantom messages or it would not pick them up correctly or in some cases at all.
oh yes i would, though tbh i would of sold my fish tank and got it on payg and unlocked it as o2 contract prices are so steep and the coverage i not as good as tmobile (not sure if this is the same everywhere but around where i live its the case). I will be honest if it wasn't for the fact all other devices are only 8gb i would not have gone for the hd7 but rather the omnia but there is no way i can live with 8gb. The only annoying thing is that when i'm playing games i sometimes touch the search button esp if i have the phone plugged in at the time due to the way i then have to hold it, but if you press back it goes right back to where you left off.
in conclusion it was not my phone of choice but my hand was forced by the internal storage but i am glad it was, the omnia is no better and my second choice mozart seems cheap and to smiler to my old desire. I love the size of the phone i was worried when i first saw it but the shape is like nothing i have ever seen and make it slip into the pocket easier then my old desire and yet i get all that screen.

I have a Samsung Vibrant that I am tired of, and I would like to know if you would truly recommend this phone?
I want to know a few things.
1. Is there any lag?
2. How is the GPS, is it like the GPS on Android?
3. Does every game cost money or are there some good free ones?
4. What would you rate the Battery life?
The disadvantage is mainly the battery, but fortunately some rom updates fix it just a little, but you still need daily charging.
There's virtually no lag in apps or in system.
GPS is fine, but there is a lack of full-scale nav apps. but you have free apps that are nearly as good
most good games cost something but yes there are good free ones too. also most paid ones offer a trial version or free with ads. either way gaming is actually great on wp7
if you get the phone for free/cheap on contract or however you will, i recommend you do so. but of course you can always wait a little longer and get upcoming ones, though i would absolutely recommend you get a wp7 phone

1. I love the Big Screen for browsing
2. Facebook and Twitter apps are as good as Android ( but FB dosen't have chat yet)
3. GPS is good but still no navigation for Maps
4. I love the Email intergration simply brilliant ( yahoo, gmail, live mail ) you can have em all
5. Good for Music Sync and Game play
6. Within 5 sec you can shoot a photo and upload it to face book with camera button and share facility
7. can wipe / detect phone through Live Services for free if lost
Only niggles I have is
It does need a really good update which is coming one just this month and one big one later on
I have had problem with apps getting stuck and you have to reboot phone all the time
( although I guess its an app problem)
Camera is not the best but is ok but there are better out there
and Yeah the ringtone sound is really rubbish. you can hardly hear them and there is no facility to put custom ringtone yet
But videos and music are fine..

I'd like to chime in that there are 100 stock ringtones and I hear them all just fine. I understand that this is a common complaint, and people point to software issues, but I think half of it is not realizing what your ringer volume is. I've seen people say it's "all the way up to 10" not realizing that's the in-call volume. 30 is the ringer volume.
Maybe I'm just lucky. My ringer is fine.

No - The lack of apps compared to the Android is just crazy.
There is extremely limited options for customization.
As far as performance, it is quite fast.
I had all 3 so far, Vibrant, HD7 and now a HD2.
The HD7 is cool in it's own way. But, the aftermarket software is just not there - Yet.
I still recommend the HD2 to anyone, but it is personal preferance. The HD2 is full of issues just like the other 2.
...you're comparing android apps, which have been out 2+ years, with wp7 apps, which has been out a couple months...?
Wait for more months as more fart apps are to come. then, it will level android and ios market.

I can say with out a doubt that for me leaving my samsung captivate JUNK (and android since G1) I couldnt be happier. I left windows for android because well i didnt like all the lag and crap. I just got this HD7 friday morning fugured i would give it a try and boy howdy im in love lol. Windows did do a great job compared to older versions and yes they still need some updates but its a new OS. If you get this phone you will be happy for there really is no lag. if apps is a biggy for you just know they are on there way just give it some time.
You will notice a difference in screen quality. Although I prefer the larger screen of the HD7/HD2, the Vibrant looks much nicer in terms of color and motion. Otherwise I'd pretty much agree with the other comments above.
Build quality is questionable, but so is the Vibrant's IMO.

Been thinking about getting a hd7 for a while, went into o2 today, compared my hd2 with it and I was amazed just how plasticy ****e the hd7 is, volume buttons felt awful weak, the test phone in the shop was scratched on the bezel. Couldn't test the screen, but guess this is the same as the hd2.
Starting to have second thoughts about getting one now, how are your hd7's holding up?

Lol mine is in the shop...it came with an impossible to press camera button.
Kind of regretting swapping my HD2, but I needed a fully functional, guaranteed OS (other than WinMo 6.5), so I went with WP7. (I'm not saying the ROMs are bad, but I need guaranteed stability at the moment)
I paid about $250 for the HD7...so basically $50 after swapping the HD2. I definitely wouldn't recommend spending much more...not that great of an upgrade.
if you want something to work for you as a phone right out of the box this is what u want....
if you want to customize every single thing then not..
i have been using it for past 5 months now and no regrets.. do not lag, very smooth, great GUI... only dont like the battery drain but its 4.3 inch screen...

HD2 is a step up in build quality. Metal battery cover, no loose volume rockers..
Having had my HD7 for about 4 months now, I have zero scratches on it. All buttons function normally. Screen looks great. Even nothing wrong with the plastic battery cover (which I've found more and more HTC's use (EVO))
So to whereas the build quality is less than that of an HD2, it's fine. I have no protection of any type on mine, and slide it in and out of pockets every day, even jeans. I'm careful that these pockets are clean though.
Yep! Take the plunge! The HD7 is a beast.
I came from a Touch Pro2 and, before that, Sony Ericsson Xperia X1. I love the new OS compared to Windows Mobile 6.5 although custom ROMs was an addicting trend.
I listen to music a lot and the phone sounds great to me, and even better after downloading Sound Enhancer. The Zune backgrounds are nice! The album art and font are big. It's a breeze to search music, too! You can open YouTube, Slacker, TuneIn and other apps from Zune.
Battery life was a problem but I turned off some features to increase life. Plus I got that new radio ROM from Ansar. I noticed a difference there, too. I hope NoDo helps out some.
People talk about apps all the time. Android has more apps (true!) but my friends say they never use a third of the apps there. The number is there for bragging rights, I guess. On iPhone, you have an XBox Live app. Hell, Xbox Live is part of your phone! No need to download a Facebook app when Facebook integration comes with the phone. Myspace, too. There's a Twitter integration forthcoming even.
Windows Live account is the new equivalent to Windows Mobile Device Center. All your contacts, uploaded photos, and Office documents are saved there. You can login to all your email accounts in one spot. It's just convenient.
Lastly, the screen......beautiful and, not to mention, huge! Again, AMOLED and Super LCD screens are for bragging rights. I watch music videos and NETFLIX on the phone and they look great. Surf with no problem.

Local AT&T store just called. HD7S stock just arrived and they have my name on one for a Sunday pick up. After three plus years of Energy ROMs on a Fuze then a Tilt 2, I'm movin' on up. Life is good.

The HD7S is not a bad PDA - I am happy. Nice workmanship, feels solid. The vibrator is lighter than the Tilt 2 and the Fuze, but I can still feel it in my pocket. The screen is definitely bright enough for me (my eyes seem to be having some sort of increasing birthday issues) and the font crisp and well contrasted. The phone works and gets good reception at the house. (NOTE: The reason I use AT&T is that after trying others they consistently give me 2-3 bars at home vice 0-1 with the others). Call quality is good.
The only negative surprise is minor. The USB connection on the HD7S is micro not mini, so I have to get a mini-to-micro adapter or a second USB cable so I can charge it at night at bedside (so I can also answer it) and have a cable connected to the PC to sync with.
I have a LOT of work to do to configure and get WP7 the way I want it, but that is the fun of owning a new phone.
I will likely miss NRG and the new ROM loads 2-3 times per month, but a (much) faster, more capable PDA and operating system is not a bad thing. Besides, my wife now has the Tilt 2 so I can still install new NRG ROMs to my heart's content.
For now, I'm a happy camper.
You might be surprised to find that you don't in fact miss installing ROMs . WP is nice like that.

I just picked up an hd7s yesterday on launch day.. awesome phone.
I was an Android developer with 2 apps in the top 20 of their categories until google banned my developer account so I decided to go with wp7. I would definately say this hd7s absolutely blows away any android phone out. Everything is responsive and fast, with all android phones there was always a very slight but noticable lag with everything you did such as button presses, swiping, etc.. The screen on this phone is awesome, I have it sitting next to my nexus one right now which has a super amoled screen, and it definately blows it away.. I'll try to post some comparison pics later

I'm surprised to see you say that the HD7S screen "blows away" an AMOLED one...
I have a Dell Venue Pro and an HD7 and concluded that the HD7S doesn't even come close to the DVP's AMOLED screen, and is only marginally better -- if at all -- than the old-fashioned TFT LCD on the HD7.
Regardless of the characteristics of the screen though I agree that the whole experience is more fluid than even very powerful Android phones I've seen.

Wow, I am super impressed with the Bluetooth and WiFi ease of use and speed and strength of connection when compared to both the Fuze and Tilt 2. (Yes, both both the latest, most bestest radios ... forgive slaughter of the English.) The GPS response on the HD7S is also much better and faster.
I knew in advance that WP7 and Outlook did not communicate well and had already set up the Zune and WindowsLive accounts to assure quick and "automatic" sync of Contacts and Calendar. This worked exactly as advertised (whether you like it or not). It did sync and within minutes of activating the phone and telling it what my Windows Live address was it synced and calendar and contact info populated the HD7S.
What I did not anticipate is that the "other" info on both calendar and contacts did not populate and there is no way for it even to show up in wp7. Yet I know that the calendar and contacts are fully and identically readable on Windows Live/MSN. For example, I use the "Notes" portion of a calendar item to copy the inviting e-mail, or directions or maps or - most importantly - the agenda for a meeting. These things do not sync for some reason (or I screwed something up or "there is an app for that" and I just haven't found it yet.)
Minor, but a pain in the....uh, never mind, I don't want to be accused of doing a Weiner.

Welcome to the WP7 family lol. I for one do not in any way miss flashing a new rom every 2 weeks or so. When I finally got fed up with winmo, I briefly switched to android by flashing my HD2 with dft's nand magldr. IDK exactly what it was about android that never gave me that "fulfillment" that winmo gave me but I gave WP7 a try and I never looked back!

Things still going well integrating the HD7S and WP7 into my life. And, surprisingly, there is a life after weekly WM6.5 ROM loads. NO issues and the one I did have reading my contact and calendar notes seems to have disappeared since I can now do so, but not PDFs and pictures. So I make sure that the agendas and directions etc I put into calendater "notes" are in plain text etc. And what the heck, a pretty agenda is no more informative than it is in plain text. But those are WP7 issues.
With the HD7S itself I see no issues with "new" stuff: the screen is a bit better and present me with no problems. The "pinking" of the photos taken on the HD7 do not appear to my eyes and the goldish color underneath the kickstand is not peeling (unless HTC or AT&T tells me it's real gold, then they will have big time peeling issues with your phones, not mine.)
Looks like we can just fold into the HD7 forums seamlessly and rest assured that any problems that affect it will affect the HD7S and vice versa.
What's your experience?
Quick question deryl, I just received mine in the mail and it is a beautiful piece of machinery, however I find that my power button is spongey like has no click feeling... Do you or anyone else who owns this phone feel the same?

Our phones on/off do not click crisply as do some, but softly and not even with a "click". There is a difference between the HD7 and the HD7S in that the complaints from some about the on/off button being too difficult reach and maneuver in the HD7, was solved by slightly raising the button heighth but not so much that it will activate in the pocket. I learned that from a utube or podcast review of the HD7S a few weeks ago.
I am also told that the camera button was also a bit difficult to activate. Supposedly it works ok, just hard to engage since it sat a bit low in the housing. But it seems that they raised that button as well because it works just fine for me. The proof will be in the pudding since taking a nice still of Mt Rainier is not the same as capturing a bank robber in the act. Not that I plan to take the latter picure.

I have an HD7 from T-Mobile and don't have any problems with the buttons. Got it at the end of April and have had no problems at all with it. I also have a myTouxh 4G and have no problems with the buttons on it either, the power button doesn't click on it either. Nor did the HD2 I had before these. I think you'll find that HTC makes a quality product. I've never had any problems with any HTC phone

Adam Z Lein today did a pretty full review of our AT&T HD7S on the Pocketnow website. It includes a rehash of some of the HD7 (T-Mobile) complaints (buttons, pink pics, etc) and some unboxing vids as well as some pretty good hands-on and use comparisons. All-in-all Adam did a fair and unbiased review that exposed both warts (screen in sunlight not that much better than HD7, color banding not much improved) and smiles (battery life and button operation).
What I especially appreciated is Adam seeming to confirm what I was beginning to suspect: for my same usage patterns, the HD7S battery life is way way way better (even though it has a smaller capacity battery - 1500 mah versus 1230 mah) than my much beloved by me Tilt 2.

After reading the Endgadget review, I'm kinda considering getting one, mostly for how easy-to-use the UI is, and the nice sleek physical design of it. I currently have a HTC G2, and I'd either be upgrading to the new Nexus on T-Mobile (or if it doesn't have the proper bands, the GSII on T-Mobile) otherwise. Getting an iPhone (for the UI and sleek design) is out of the question since I can't get it on T-Mobile, and don't want to pay for AT&T or whoever when I can pay $40 and get all that I want.
I know, Meego is dead and there aren't many apps for it, it isn't that powerful, there's a WP7 version coming out, etc. - but I want a phone that's good at the basics (phone calls, texts, emails, and web browsing) with a nice screen/size, battery life, and camera, and the N9 seems to do all of that just fine.
I don't care for games or other such apps, and a lot of the "nice" features on these new phones (like huge screens, NFC, etc.) don't appeal that much to me (I'd be getting the Nexus or whatever more for dev support and screen quality than anything else).
I mean, I have CM7 on my G2 and I even OC'd it, but there isn't much on it that I can't live without by getting rid of Android (and I'd probably get a Honeycomb tablet to supplement the N9, if anything).
Anyway...anybody here use or own one that can comment on how it performs and feels and whatnot?
Also, any idea how the N8 with the Anna update fares now? I'm looking at it based mostly on the amazing camera/flash.

I just got the N9 about a week ago. The os is so smooth and so easy to use. The design is great as well. Pictures and video does not do justice you really have to see it in person. I had Android and IOS and for me Meego is a way better OS, only problem is the apps store. But like you I can live without all those apps, Nokia already have intergraded apps and the import ones I use are in the App store.

Yeah, I can definitely live without the apps, but looking into it, Skype video calls don't seem to work on Meego or Symbian Anna, so I think any Nokia device is out for me...I'm currently looking at the iPhone 4S instead, with a prepaid carrier.

I read into it a lot, and it's not full NFC - it's missing some security-related stuff which won't ever allow it to have virtual wallets like Google Wallet.

I don't know if this thread is still alive, but I figured that maybe there are still people out there wondering whether to get the N9.
I've got mine sitting on my desk right now, and wow! it's such a beautiful piece of hard- and software! I've tried them all, iOS, Android, WP, webOS - and Meego on the N9 just beats them all in terms of pleasure in usage. The screen where you get time, weather, missed notifications and facebook/twitter/RSS feeds has just about all the info you need in one neat place. It makes even the WP UI look fragmented. So this is a gorgeous device...

... if you can live with restricted options as far as apps and expandability go. If you're okay with the N9 as it is, you'll love it. It does calls, email, SMS/MMS, Calendar, on- and offline navigation (Nokia Drive!), RSS feeds etc beautifully. (although I found that even my old Windows Mobile 6.1 devices offered deeper support for Outlook integration). The browser is very minimalistic. There are a few preinstalled additional apps that I don't use, and there's a bit more in the Store. That's about it.
Like I said - for sheer joy of use (the live standby screen with time and notifications alone is a beauty) this is the best device I've used so far. For the expensive device that the N9 still is, even on eBay, there are far more powerful alternatives out there.
The thing is: I LIKE IT, and don't see myself giving it away. For the money I've spent (I have the 64 GB version) I could get a SGSII or similar, but if you've used the N9 you'll find any Android or iOS user interface offensive. Not to mention the hardware: Size is just perfectly right, and you'll be hard pressed to find a device with similar elegance out there. The HTC One X has taken design clues from the N9 (like the curved glass), but it doesn't match the comfortable fit in your palm.

They are beautiful, if the lumia 800 had all the same hardware, it'd be the best phone ever. Right now, the Nokia n9 may reign supreme. It multitasks better than the one x

Yeah, interestingly enough I was just thinking about the N9 again the other day. Thanks for the detailed post, I'm definitely interested in it again. I've realized that in day-to-day use, I'm perfectly fine with the functions/features you mentioned - if anything, I'd prefer something that minimalistic so it doesn't get too cluttered. I'd still want to keep an Android device for certain apps (like Square), of course.
Anyway, I guess I have three kinda important questions:
-Can the N9 sync Google contacts, calendar, and mail?
-The N9 can do wireless hotspost, correct? And how does it affect battery life?
-How's the virtual keyboard? Coming from a G2, I want to make sure I don't end up regretting the switch.

yes it syncs google contacts, the wireless hotspot offers a bit more battery drain, but barely noticable, your options are swype, which I took, or the stock keyboard which is the only one I've seen rival WP7 in terms of responsiveness. Its a great experience.

I think I'm sold on it, especially for the pentaband 3G (meaning I can switch carriers easily if I want to). Now I'm wondering what Android device I'd want to supplement it. I'm thinking either a Xperia Play with a bad ESN (since they go as cheap as $100 and would be great for portable gaming) or some 7" tablet (probably the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, although that wouldn't be as portable as the Play...).
You could also just dual-boot android on it... It does emulation up to the playstation better than ANY android phone.

Wait, really? I remember hearing something about an Android port, but it was really buggy/unfinished - how is it now? Do you have a link to it maybe?
In any case, I'd still probably prefer the Xperia Play if only for the hardware controls (not a big fan of touchscreen controls, especially when something like a PS1 game would take up like half the screen in buttons) - and at $100 for a dedicated gaming device, I can't say it'd break the bank.

It's pretty complete, I only had one issue overall in that I couldn't turn when driving on NFS, aside from that I didn't notice any issues. I'll still speak on the behalf of emumaster though, it's outstanding. I bought an xperia play for the same reason, because with all my Lumia love, I can't emulate a PS1 on it and why buy a new psvita when you can just buy a play?

Oh wow, didn't think it'd be that nice. Any idea if it's still being worked on? Only ask since it's been a little over a month since the last update.
Also, can you still get official updates for Meego with that, or would an update screw everything up, or what? In any case, with it being able to dual-boot, it's nice to know I wouldn't have to worry about forgetting my Android device in case I need to take a Square transaction or something. And I'd definitely get the 64GB version in that case.
EDIT: Just saw the Alpha #3 on that same site, nice.
Spoke with the developer last Thursday and he said he expected to keep working on it after finals, he's had a hectic schedule. There have been no official updates since nitdroids release but they are speculating that it will block nitdroid when the next pr goes public.
Crap...I just won ~$50 of accessories toward a T-Mobile phone of my choice, and now I don't know whether I should still get the N9 and forfeit the accessories, or get a One S (which would be about the same price as the 16GB N9) with said accessories. I do really prefer the design/style of the N9, but the One S certainly does have its advantages (faster data, much better specs, and full Android primarily)...

the n9 sounds really great. unique UI that makes the phone easy to use. lets ignore the fact that this phone is getting less and less support and has a poor app selection
why pick the n9 over the galaxy nexus? they are about the same price and as unique as the n9 is, isn't the UI of ICS just as usable? i wish the n9 was 50-100 bucks cheaper!
