[Q] Randomly resetting N1 - possible solution - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just bought a nexus one with the old resetting issue that seems to have come up a lot.
I've been stress testing the phone (using StabilityTest) and found that the sure way to get it to reset is to heat it up, by charging it, stress testing for a while (usually a few mins), putting it on a hot water bottle ect.
The temperature in these cases usually gets to around 30 C before it dies.
I put it on some frozen milk and sure enough its been stress testing for half an hour with no problems - the temperature sticks at about 15 C.
I'll try opening it up and cleaning everything I can with isopropanol. I figure maybe there's some gunk preventing proper cooling?
Any thoughts as to what else could be causing this?

Might be defective or degraded CPU.
Heat slows down electric signals, and the CPU is built to withstand a specific amount of heat without failures. If in the manufacturing process somewhere in the CPU there appears too small (physically) semiconductor or metal layer, it won't withstand the heat. Moreover, heating/cooling cycles destroy material slowly - and one of those layers could be marginal when manufactured, and pass the tests, and later get partially destroyed - and make the CPU prone to overheating.

Have you applied the 2.3.4 update?
This was supposedly a bug fixed in the 2.3.4 update...

Thanks for the replies.
Jack_R1 - sounds like a good theory, it's a shame theres no way (that i know) of checking whether the cpu is making errors like in prime95. I can stress test it but all I know is when it crashes. Presumably if the cpu is degraded it will be messing up alot.
Another theory I read about was that some phones where shipped with a fault in the main pcb that is supposed to reset the phone when it gets too hot as a protection measure.
GldRush98 - I will give it a go, I'm downloading the latest cm nightly which I presume is 2.3.4 - I had read that the reset fix was for nexus s phones though?
I've just treid undervolting the kernal, it might not fix it but it could be stable enough for most things. An undervolt of 75mv managed a stress test of 20mins which is a record without ice...
EDIT: StabilityTest does report errors. I just haven't been getting any, would this mean its not the cpu?

I think you're right, that fix was for the Nexus S.
Sorry bud

Same here.. It mainly starts after update the radio. If you check the last kmsg you'll see that it's the radio which crashed.
If I use my phone during charging, it resets all the time.
What I read is
* May be a hardware issue that HTC can fix (but my phone have more than one year so...)
* May be sim card issue. I'll change it tomorrow, will see.
I've never overclocked or overvolt my cell, mainly under clock to 960 and undervolt, so I reckon it's not our fault.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App

Its not a sim card issue for me.. Its been crashing without one in. Maybe worth disabling the radio and testing like that?
I just tried overvolting my cpu by 50mv and it seems rock solid. 1 hour 30 on stabilitytest without a crash and while charging. I'll keep testing and let you know. Might be worth a try if your willing to overvolt. Useful links here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1059423
http://www.tiamat-aosp.com/downloads/tiamat-n1/

so, if i understood this correctly, and to solve my random reboot problem..i have to flash tiamat-kernel, and then PSM +50 Nexus One file????
i am running cm7 rom my n1 is unlocked.

That's what I did, but I've no idea why so no guarantees. Another point is that it probably won't stop reboots entirely.. I put my phone on a hot water bottle and left it stress testing - it rebooted.
Should make it pretty stable for normal use if you don't live in a desert though.
Let me know how you get on.

i just installed the tiamat kernel i am thinking of trying it out before flashing the psm file

Sounds good. Maybe the fix was the tiamat kernal not the overvolt...
I've spent half the day fixing my phone after I somehow destroyed it in testing - left it on the hot water bottle stress testing too long. It decided to reset and then get stuck on the boot screen no matter what I tried to reflash.
Just got it working again now, running cm7 and tiamat (without ov) to test...

the tiamat kernel alone didn't help...i flashed the psm+50 file..i will report back...

Yeah, didn't work for me either, I've also tried insectRavens kernal to test and no difference there. +50 still seems to be radically more stable for me.
Something I did notice is that the default smartass governor used by tiamat slows my phone down, I've changed it to interactive using setcpu which seems to be about normal speed. Might be worth doing...

Sorry to say this but psm file didn't help me either

That's a shame. Ah well, maybe something particularly weird is going on with my phone. Seems to be fixed anyway.

I changed my SIM card, with no effect. I'm using the last redstar kernel and found it more stable but when charging. It's quite better, but not as good as I would.. sadly.

SLCD Nexus one 35°C then... reboot or freeze some ideas
Hi to everyone.... very interesting thread. I'm an owner of 2 nexus one, AMOLED and SLCD the first one is perfect the SLCD have overheating issue it was bought second hand on ebay it's a vodafone espana.
I've noticed that it's working perfect till its working temperature become 35.6°C i.e. 96.08°F. It can freeze (need to remove battery) or it reboot but freeze on colored cross logo. As soon as I shutdown it removing battery and try to power, it vibrates 7 seven times.
Searching on the web seven times vibrating is CPU working bad for bad temperature. Anyone has tried to disassemble nexus one and putting thermal paste on Snapdragon to reduce overheating and better heating dissipation?
For sure for better stability we need to overvolt but we need to eliminate overheating maybe also modifying plastic on the back of the down side of nexus one.
When I bought it, it was winter so anykind of issue now I need to shutdown if overheating remove battery and wait some minutes.
Stability test apk it's not a problem I can use it for one hour and half without issue using tiamat kernel vipermod plus +50mvolt with setcpu on demand with maximum of 422-466-499mhz for cpu frequency.
The real test is running Angry Birds Rio try playing with it (with full frequency 998mhz without tiamat kernel and vipermod I can play only some level maybe 10-15mins) with this kind of configuration I succeed playing for one hour and half before first reboot.
So Angry Birds is the real test (hoping that it has anykind of bugs ) maybe that physics calculation are written bad or are alots and cpu overheat.
P.S.
Anyone opened it putting thermal paste?
P.P.S.
Sorry for my english I'm from Italy hope I have been clear.
P.P.P.S.
Sorry for long post.
Best Regards
Tony

I finally send it back to HTC, for reparation. Costs me 55$, and 2weeks after, my nexy came back.
Since, all work. HTC changed all the main board. The nexus can go through 100°F without any reboot. So maybe you can do that, but it seems to be much more overheating :-/

[Q] Overclock on the G Tablet

I have several questions about overclocking on the G Tablet:
1: Is anyone using an Overclock App?
2: What are the real benefits of running an Overclock App?
3: What damage is done by running an Overclock App?
4: What is the best Overclock app for the G Tablet?
5: Are any of these apps worth the money?
I look forward to the replies!
No overclock on the g-tablet as of yet.
I've contacted Mike who does the SETCPU. He said he'll update for tegra 2 support as soon as he can get his hands on a device to test on.

Do the current kernels support overclock? Normally you need to specify clock speed slots in the kernel then apps like setcpu allow for those slots.

Awesome, will try it out. Thanks pershoot.
Wowzer just tried pershoots kernel and checkout the results on quadrant and linpack on Vegan 5.1.
wow..
@pershoot.. i have a question , im just a newbie with kernels. how do i install a kernel and is there a settings for that and lastly if i OC my tab will the battery last shorter? and how about the temp?
thanks
Whoa! Nice job Pershoot! Testing very well on Calkulins and Vegan Ginger. Excellent work!

I don't see any hit on the battery... assuming you leave it in power save mode and not performance mode in Setcpu.
Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk
It is neither.
A tweaked ondemand is default with nv's driver taking some precedence.
Got it!

@ 07aspenx do you have a steps by step on what you did to make yours so fast? I did setcpu but only got 1700 or so on quadrant. Still better then most devices but nearly as fast as yours.

All I did was flash the .zip file on pershoot's site then ran Quadrant. I was also getting 1700-1800 on a non OC'ed Vegan 5.1.1.
I'm new to the whole flashing/rooting concept.. But I bought the G Tablet about a week ago and after several trials and errors and trying several roms I finally got it flashed to G Harmony (gingerbread) v2.3 which I found to be the best and have it overclocked @1.4ghz.. The most simple and to the point way I could describe it is follow the directions on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245.

On the edge
I have found that the AOSP ROMS are fast. I use the following rom.
ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1007455
Be sure to pick up the G-APPS that goes with it.
I have found that clemsyn creates a mean kernel. His 1500mhz kernel is awesome. If your willing to go higher, he has one that will take you to 1700mhz.
However I must echo his words in that the specs for the processor are being pushed over the limits that Nvidia recommends. Now, if you like living on the edge, this is one great kernel.
Getting Dirty
Now, for a little dirty work.
Since you have already destroyed your warranty by modding ( however you can return to factory and no one usually knows.), you can now modify your hardware.
Yes, you can!!! It is called a heatsink!!!... Now how does it work??? Well, I will tell you.
See next reply for more info... ( I need to post more in order to be able to play in big boy land... )
PLEASE NOTE: Read all the Dirty posts before you start. This is for your own protection ( and mine). If you don't get warm and fuzzy thinking about doing the follow procedure, THEN DON'T!!!!
Beginning to get Dirty
Ok.. I have to post 3 more times I think... so.. to start off here and continue from my last post:
You have to take your G-Tab apart. Yes... it is necessary to see the innards!!!!
now... 4 screws hold that back on... BUT, there are little tabs holding it together after you pull the 4 small phillips screws. So, now you have to get a little physical with your G-Tab. Please remember that you are doing this at your own risk. I have done this... but I have relatively major experience in hardware. (was an electronic tech in old life) So, faint of heart... do not attempt!!!!
OK.. now you get to read my next post!!!!
Now we're Dirty
Ok.. if you accomplished the mission in the last post, your dirty... You have nicked, gouged, and smudged your pretty G-Tab. All is not lost, you are now into its guts!!!!
Ok, Now we really are going to cause havok. This is not recommended by anyone, but I have accomplished the task and will at least give directions. Please remember that anything you do beyond this point is totally your responsibility.
Ok, now that you have your back off, you need to gently pop the metal cover off of the electronics. It is shiny and extremely thin, so be very careful not to bend or warp it. Do not remove the tape from the end that is taped down. This will help keep things in perspective and it will go back on easier.
Now, you have found the object of our search. The CPU!!!!
Now, the hard part. Based on your observation of where the cpu is in relation to the cover, put a mark on the outside of the cover approximately where the center of the cpu is. ( now, for the more serious, measure and mark. More precise)
OK, now I hope you have read all of this instead of just doing one at a time. I guess I should go back and edit the first one and add that as a caveat. I will add the next post after I do that. Don't want to cause you guys problems.
Past Dirty!!!
Ok, now we will add some heat sink compound to our cpu. A very ( and I mean very) small amount at the very center of the raised portion of the cpu is all we need. Now, after studying the situation, I noticed that the cover is higher than the raised portion of the cpu. For heat sink compound to work, it needs to be touching two things. One is the cpu, and the other is the heat sink. Well guess what our heat sink is???? Yep, you guessed it.. the metal cover. Now, it isn't the best in the world, but in heat dissipation, every little bit helps. So, now for the hard part. Put the metal cover back on ( an you have the center of the cpu marked on it, right?). Using a small ( not sharp, I used an eye glasses repair type screwdriver with a blade tip) tool, press down on the metal cover around the area that you marked as the center of the cpu. the metal is pliable and does not take a lot of pressure to bend. We just want some of it to press against the cpu as to form a heat bridge.
Now, you can power on the G-Tab after you have done this and make sure all is good. If so, then power down, and put the back cover back on. We are done with our little surgery for the G-Tab.
This will help with any overclocking you do.
Caveat: It does not remove the danger of burning up your processor!!!!!

Had the same problem too....sometimes when the phone is hot, theres a delay between making calls and the phone actually dialling. For info i'm on standard kl3 rom rooted with cf kernel. Phone is on on demand gov standard speed 1.4ghz. Appreciate any help...thanks.
I'm running Abyss 2.3, 100 - 1400 with Smartass V2 Governor. And it works fantastic I must say. You might wanna try a new Kernel FM 1.5 or Abyss 2.3
It's normal for the CPU to warm up when you're playing games and anything causing the CPU to run at max for a long time.
Install CPU Spy from the market and make sure you're phone goes into deep sleep and monitor the other frequencies as well.
After installing new roms or kernels the phone usually gets warm as well. Just reboot and it should be okay after a couple of minutes. That's what I experienced on my Note
Mine is completely stock... Haven't even installed 3 apps yet. The phone is never in a case and the heat appears to originate from the camera area any thoughts or ideas or am I just over reacting?
Btw the phone doesn't slow down or act different operationally just gets warm lol
below 20% of battery power any device getting hot.
plus maybe you making hard time to processor
naw the phone is at 80 percent as well :/ i think im just over thinking lol the phone is operating like a champ just want to make sure its nothing serious
Mine gets pretty hot in same area wen playing games, its just the processor heating up, sure it for force close the app, if it couldn't handle it!
Yeah.. Any processor will get hot when running. Remember there's nothing to keep it cool! So I think if you put it on your cheek and it stings after a while there may be a problem. Otherwise it's pretty normal for the Note.

Unknown issue with auto-shutdown on Galaxy note GT N7000!

Hello everyone!
I have recently purchased a galaxy note, and since then have had a constant problem of auto shutdown, at the beginning it happened once or twice so I didn't even mind, but now its just becoming too frequent for the phone to even be usable!
I can't return the note, and have no warranty (nor money to buy another one). Son no viable solution there.
I sold my previous phone so I could buy the Note, without it I am phoneless.
I have looked EVERYWHERE for a solution and haven't come to one single conclusion yet!
I will now post some facts about the phone's situation:
Model GT N7000
Rooted: yes, via cwm
Rom: Jelly Bean 4.1.2 Beta, flashed via cwm (but the issue occurred on stock ICS, gingerbread and costom ROMs too, stock ROMs where flashed via PC ODIN and mobile ODIN)
Kernel: Phillz flashed via cwm
-Does not shut down while connected to charger (and is charging).
-Tried different kernels and ROMs, official and custom ones, and the bug kept happening.
-Shutdowns are completely random (although I found that using ROM Toolbox and setting CPU min to 500 and governor to Performance the phone became more stable and didn't shutdown so frequently. Recently these last 3 days this has become pointless, the phone is unusable unless connected to charger)
-Auto shutdowns happen when phone is in sleep, or awake, no matter what I am doing with it, it just happens.
I am thinking of replacing the battery, since no matter what software changes I do it keeps shutting down maybe a new battery will help.
But then again, I don't know, I'm just desperate...
Thank you for all those who take the time to read this!
Interesting, maybe the logs show something. Check logcat app for that. Elixer2 has a good overviewable one. There might be some hints shown as to what is happening. I cant really help you with interpreting.
Do you do clean installs? mind the brickbug
Battery levels, they show correct values? Also after reboot same value as before? You can set in settings, display I think battery tp percent. Easier monitoring from statusbar.
Try andrometer to check voltage levels as wel. Fully charged should be around 4200 mv.
Do a little dance to brighten up your mood.
Next, or first, check if battery contacts are clean and alligned when putting battery in. It might just be a loose fitting. I doubt that thought.
With autoshutdown, you seen android saying, shutting down now, or does it go black and just crashes so to speak?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2
Thank you so much for the help!
I have been suggested to purchase another battery, and had actually been thinking about that!
Will andrometer confirm my suspicions that it is a battery issue?
The battery connectors are clean, cleaned them when this problem first appeared.
And the shutdown is as if I suddenly removed the battery, the power is cut right off the device.
I cant dance but I'll play guitar, that always helps me, thank you for the suggestion! xD
hum, not software related imo, really an hardware issue, electrical issue, related to battery as it does not occur while charged.
first of all: easily done: remove any SD card and try. still the Pb?
then borrow another battery, fully charged, and try. Still the PB?
then with your own battery again (as it does not come from the battery), check the electrical contacts (dirty, embossed...), try to check that mechanically the battery is firmly kept in place, add sticky tape/pieces of paper to maintain the battery. Still the PB?
then i am afraid that the best to do is going to... after sale service... it may be only a small welding a bit cracked on the power circuit, sometimes a small vibration or a temperature difference opens the power line and your phone immediately shut down. It is almost impossible to locate and to fix for common people.
good luck mate !
Side note: setting CPU min to 500 and then setting governor to Performance is pointless, because performance = always max CPU frequency.
Anyway, I can think of various ways of checking whether your CPU is misbehaving at some frequencies (like SetCPU stress tests on different freqs set to both min and max) but that's likely not the case, all signs do point to some kind of battery issue.
If I were you, I'd try to find a battery somewhere (friend/relative/whoever else with GNote, or even a shop) and see if the problem persists with another battery. If it disappears = buy a new battery, whether official or copy or bigger size, whatever. If it persists = at least try to flash some more customizable rom/kernel combination, of ICS kind - where you can over/under-clock/volt.
Thank you saturax555 and GwynBleidd for your suggestions!
Unfortunatlly I dont know anyone close to me that has got a Gnote, but I will buy the battery and test it out, its not expensive at all, I've seen a 2600 (Or 2400, can't quite remember) mha battery for salle somewhere, if it fixes the issue I'll even end up with a larger battery!
I'll inform you guys of the results after I get a new battery, so if anyone else has the same problem we can help them too

+1 on all above comments. It does appear battery/ hardware issue. Lets hope a new battery fixes it.
Andrometer will only confirm if charging level is reached. Also you can use it to check if at certain voltage this occures. It gives false positive on good health battery. So thats not a thorough indicator.
Guitar is way cooler btw

So I got battery spy today and these are the results so far (See image).
My voltage is usually around 3900mV and 4300mV, usually at 4192mV, can anyone say if these values are normal??

Appears normal. Battery appears charged. app is called androsensor, mixed them up.
Do you get weird artifacts prior to fallout? Like screen flickering, lines and such?
Am so interested in cracking this nut.
You could check emmc brickbug app. You will have bug as all notes, but it also does a sector check. Like if part of emmc is corrupted. Am not expecting this to be case as clearly its battery related. Just want to be sure.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2
No flickering or anything, it's just like if I suddenly removed the battery.
Got new results from emmc check and I downloaded andrometer
Thank you so much for your help!
Cool.
I have a hunch its not battery, cause unstable battery usually(not 100% sure about symptoms) has those flickering issues.
Its not emmc, test passed yes!
you had it on different roms. With clean installs and different modems, kernels, etc. No common denominator romwise. maybe app or hardware.
Then its interesting to keep both cpu temp and battery temp in check. See if there are spikes prior to fallout. cpu temp I am not sure. you can try cooltool, disable gauges and setup cpu utilization, frequency, ram size, battery % and temperature.
watch those values for abnormalities when it occurs.
Also check the logs for errors/warnings (elixer2 has a good one)
But I am at a point of really guessing. I have a feeling its hardware but am hoping now for rogue app or battery still.
maybe someone else has some ideas.

I had this same issue.. Mine was bought last year.. Just around 2 weeks ago i want to root and put a custom Rom...
I root using cf-root + philz kernel.. Then i flash rocketrom 4.1.2... V3 i think.. Then this issue came.... It 's does have flickering issue before it' s going off.. This all thing doesn't happen while on charge... I'm still not try using others battery..... I also have flash others custom Rom.. Like Ultimate, fusion.... And lastly i unroot it using stock fw at sammobile.. Still it's happen
Try changing the battery, that fixed my note right up!
Is the symptoms are the same as mine its not software related, order a new battery, and if you want you can root and flash the rom that you want so when it arrives your note is ready to go!
Tip: root the note and get battery calibration from the play store, it's free, you will need it to recalibrate your new battery so you get real values displayed and to avoid excessive battery drain.

I'm facing the same problem and its getting frustrating. I'm currently using Asylum ROM 20130303 build and latest Gapps for android 4.2. did a full wipe. tried checking my battery stats and its normal. did a recovery, flashed again but still problem. my gnote just shutdown and cant turn back on unless i plug the charger. any help?
may be you first need to try with an alternate battery first.. or go back to a stock rom and test.. most prominent symptom is using the camera with flash shuts down the phone immediately
i purchased a new battery and now its running fine
The phone is flawed and shuts off on it's own under various conditions, all hardware related. I am not able to post externally due to not having enough posts yet. However, I have had the same issue on 3 Galaxy Note 2's from Verizon. I made a video that shows exactly what is going on and posted it on the following website...
wwwDOTgalaxynote2shutsoffDOTcom
You will have to paste that link in to a new browser and replace the DOTs accordingly to get to it, but once you see the video, you will be enlightened. Be sure to read the details I provided on that site as well. They go in to detail about the problems that I have had and the lack of proper support that Samsung is willing to provide.

1. Battery drains rather bad
2. Screen flickering
3. Auto shutdowm
Used the battery in my wifes n7000 , however no issues at all
Only seem to happen on my phone.
I flashed it to stock std 4.1.2 , however problem still persist. auto shutdown few times a day
Gets worse when i use an external SD

[Q] Xperia T CPU temperature

Can anyone let me know the below temperatures for Xperia T CPU running stock rom is ok or not ok?
idle : upto 36C ish
on slight use : above 40C
on longer usage of basic apps such as whatsapp, viber, facebook: between 40 to 50C
browser: around 55C (browsing xda took it over 60C)
repost
CPU temperature is not so important, it will always be that "hot" while being on use. Battery temperature is the thing that should be important to you.
I think these values are ok, as long as your phone does not shutdown unexpectedely (with the aproppriate "Shutting down" mesaage box) - that usualy means that the temperature of both CPU and the battery is way too high and any other operations may result in their permanent damage. If you don't experience such situations then I think you shouldn't be worried about anything
Anyway I have to tell you that IMHO this phone has, in fact, some "problems" with overheating or at least with pretty high temperature than it should be normally. But I don't care, after two years of really heavy usage - it still works and it never disappointed me, I hope you won't be too
Thermal throttling will start at around 65-70C, at 80 the phone will shutdown.
These functions are hard coded in kernel, so dont worry.

Battery temperature hasn't gone beyond 40C if I remember. Only started to monitor recently. I've been using this just over two years too and never felt any heat when using it for normal usage on 4.0 and 4.1 stock roms.
Only felt it on 4.3 and downgrading after trying 4.3 uk rom 2nd time, even 4.1 now produces noticeable heat which is what's bugging me. Really regret for upgrading to 4.3 for a 2nd time :'(
The initial downgrade was done through SEUS as 4.3 wasn't released for UK then and had the blue triangle icon on some bootups but no other issue or heat.
Which rom do you use now on your device?
40C is really low value for the battery. Trust me, you really shouldn't be worried about the temperature
I was using the newest build of OmniROM until yesterday. I flashed the newest release of CM11 and I'm not disappointed.
ok, thanks. I am trying the Omega v2 rom since yesterday, but it seems to make it much warmer so might head back to 4.1
What helped me on my Xperia V is rooting, downloading No-Frills Cpu Controp and changing governor to ondemand (it was interactive by default).

thanks, just installed the app. It seems to be 'ondemand' by default. :/
Just finished setting up 4.1 stock rom, and a little bit of usage heats it up very quickly. With the heat, battery level goes down very quickly too

Well it happens on my Xperia V too no matter what I do, but since I've been using a silicone case I don't notice it anymore and it doesn't burn my fingers like it used to. Maybe try changing governor to interactive...I'm using it now and the phone seems pretty cold

I've been using a TPU gel case since I bought the phone... and never felt any heat (apart from when trying out 4.3 but yet less than present level of heat). So seems it took 2 years for the phone to start this 'heating up' mode. I am trying to understand if it is a software issue or something to do with hardware.

I've read that almost all Sony phones heat up so it's probably a hardware issue...but since rooting and uninstalling all bloatware and disabling some of the google's services, I noticed my phone doesn't really heat up that much anymore.

Even I have rooted and disabled almost all the bloatware including some google apps (actually removed them from the system/app folder itself). This was how it was prior to 4.3 testing and had no issues. Only heated slightly for a YouTube video or so. Removed the same list of items this time around as well, but for even apps like whatsapp it heats..so something is definitely wrong... it remains cool on idle, hence not a background service that causes it.

Then it might be a hardware issue :/

that's exactly how mine was
wondering if there is some clash in the internal memory area.. (which happened when using flashtool to downgrade... from 4.3 this time). Before used SUS as 4.3 wasn't released for UK and it repaired to 4.1
When i play CoC with data mobile the temperature become very high...this can damage any hardware components?
Because i changed the battery two times for random reboots and i think that some components are broken
its WINTER

Nexus 6 gets really hot

Well my Nexus 6 has started getting really hot even with moderate usage. Its not like it burns my hand but it gets uncomfortable at times and it worries me.
If I'm just browsing on chrome, checking out Facebook, or playing a simple game like Crossy Roads, the phone starts getting really warm and after a while its really hot. Even when on WiFi it becomes hot. I have to close all the apps and leave it for a while so that it cools down. I don't have a lot of apps open all the time and I have a lot of memory remaining.
I can't really figure out what's the problem, any suggestions?
Thanks.

+1 Facebook application consumes extreme amounts of battery and system resources. That would be my first suggestion as well. Uninstall Facebook and see if you notice an improvement.
It would be easier to suggest something if you let us know if you are stock or have been playing with roms/ kernels and their settings.... I have seen other phones get hot with too aggressive kernel settings.....
first off, what cpu temperature ate you talking about? secondly, feel does not give you am accurate temperature reading, all its does is show you if something is hotter, or cooler, than your hand. thirdly, your phone can get up to 99C in temp. at 100C, the boiling point of water, your phone would automatically shut down to cool off. now while using your phone, especially when using the cpu hard, it will get hot. but that is normal. you own a quad core phone with a 2.65ghz cpu. do you really expwct it to stay cold?
Thanks for the suggestions.
I'll try uninstalling Facebook and getting back to you. I've already uninstalled Facebook Messenger.
My CPU temperature is around 41 degrees Celsius and when it gets warm to the point that its uncomfortable is around 58-60 degrees Celsius.
In know it has a really powerful cpu but I don't always want to be holding a device that is warm to the point that it becomes uncomfortable.
Also I haven't even attempted rooting or changing the kernels so its all stock.

58-60C is VERY normal, when using the phone. so maybe a powerful phone isnt right for you.
But is it normal to feel warm? Even though its powerful shouldn't it stay cool? Is this happening to every Nexus 6 user? Sorry for the influx of questions

again, feel osnt an accurate way to kudge temperature. if your hand is cooler, the phone will feel more hot. your phones temp also is dependent on the air temp around you. as if its warmer outside, then the phone will get warmer. but yea, every nexus can and will get that warm. and at times, will get even warmer! try plugging in to a charger and streaming a movie. in this situation, ive seen my phone hit 74C. but thats normal as well. unlike deaktop computers, our phones dont have fans blowing to keep the cpu cool. we rely on an inactive way to keep our phones cooler, so its normal for the more powerfully phones to get warm, and even hot.
Try this.
I was having overheating issues. When gaming, charging, or just about anything other than the phone at an idle. I cleared the cache in recovery. That's it. I did not uninstall anything or modify anything in any way. And now I do not have those issues. Is that what fixed it? I do not know. Will it work for anyone else? I do not know that either. But, I'm pretty sure that if you can clear the cache with your stock recovery, it won't hurt anything. Maybe you will get lucky and it works. Bonus benefit, battery life improved for me as well. Maybe 20% better. I hope it helps you as much as it did for me.
Good Luck.

if you are having "overheating" issues, then you are saying that your phone hits 100C constantly and reboot? if not, its not an "overheating" issue, its an issue with you and some heat.

No. What I am saying is that it did get hot enough to reboot. And now it does not get hot enough to reboot. I guess I should know to be absolutely clear on these forums. Thanks.

odd. considering that thermal throttle is on by default. do you disable thermal throttle manually?

No, what is odd is that I posted my experience with a similar issue on my Nexus 6 from at&t, and now I am responding to this.
But, fine.
I prefer not to beat around the bush. So, if you want to say it's not possible? Ok. that's cool. Think I am lying? That's fine as well. Heck I probably am. Just disregard the whole thing. It isn't important. at all. I wish I had something more meaningful to add. I'm starting to feel a little dirty from spamming up the thread with this. So I am happy to digress first man. You won. :good: :highfive: :victory:
And so sorry O.P. Didn't mean to push any buttons and junk up your thread.
Now that that's out of the way. Please try to have a good day.

lol! im not saying youre lying! seriously. im just saying that the behavior that you experienced is odd, considering thermal throttle being there. i actively disable thermal throttle every single time i boot up. and i try, really try, but have not been able to reach 100C on my n6. and i run my cpu at 3032mhz high and low cpu speed. now my nexus 5 reaches shutdown very easy, it takes seconds to get it there. my n6, no matter how hard i push, purposefully, i can not get it to reach 100C. now your reboot might have been something completely different, and you not reaching thermal shutdown. but i doubt you would have known that, because you would need a live cpu temp in your status bar to see if you hit thermal shutdown. and i doubt you have a cpu temp showing in your status bar. i do
If your phone is 55+C while you are not using it very intensely there's a problem.
I listen to music, watch videos, play some games like clash of clans and I never break 50 Celsius.

youre probably looking at the battery temp. battery temp is different. if your battery hits 60C, youll automatically shut down. everyone i know with a nexus 6 sees over 50C cpu temp rather often. well, depending how hard you are using the cpu, and the temp around you.

Well I can't tell you how hot it was getting. But when I played Star Wars Galactic Defender while charging it got really hot, almost too hot to hold. Although I am sure that what I felt was nothing near the boiling point of water, it was enough to make the phone restart. It got hot under the same circumstances with 5.0. Just not that hot. But after the 5.1 update it started getting much hotter. At the time I wouldn't put it on a charger at night because of the crazy heat. After the cache clearing things have been much better. It doesn't even get warm when fast charging.

Partly. Through normal operation with stock interactive governor I sit around 40-50 playing music, opening coc, etc. Phone never feels hot in hand.
When I'm idling or reading something or casually scrolling I'm always sitting 35-40 CPU temp.
Obviously if I crank it up and lock to 2.6GHz and run some CPU stresses I quickly get up to 75C  but that isn't normal operation. Relaxed operation when the CPU is idling should sit pretty low.

it probably was something else that made it reboot, being plugged in and gaming. btw, thats the second best way ive found to get the phone really hot, plugged in and gaming

using the cpu lightly or it just sitting there wont get it hot at all. listening to music is using the cpu very lightly. if it gets hot just sitting there, then that is a problem. thats usually caused by a process getting "stuck" and the cpu staying a 100% active. so the heat in that situation would be a symptom, but not the problem.
