Cheap 13 dollar case with portrait and landscape stand on Amazon - Nook Color Accessories

I just bought a Nook last week and needed a case but didnt exactly want to drop 30 dollars on a case I might not even like.
There were no reviews for this case so I was wary on buying it, it just came in the mail and I can confirm its definitely great.
All the buttons are accessible, the audio speaker is covered however. The picture frame-ish flap to keep it in portrait and landscape modes works great in landscape but its a little low and wobbly in portrait. I'm ok with that though.
There's even a magnet on it to keep it out of the way. All in all I am happy for the price. My screen protector cost more than it.
I cant post links yet because I mostly lurk, but if you google "khomo case nook color amazon" you'll get it as the first result.
Just wanted to pass on a good deal!

Thanks mate,
that looks like exactly what I have been wanting! And $13 - can't beat the price.

Looks pretty nice. Definelty looks worth the admission fee.

How does the stand work? Does it lock into place somehow? Or does it just "balance"?

It doesn't show it in the amazon pictures, and I was actually concerned about this too assuming it was just going to flap around and be worthless. Its got a little cloth strap to hold it in place, here are some pictures. (just realized I can add images as attachments.)
Also when its NOT in use there's a magnet on it so it holds it flush against the case.

Thanks for the pics mate! Really helps to explain it.
A few other quick questions if you have time:
1) Hows the build quality? I have a cheap one from ebay which is pretty loose and slides out the top in portrait mode.
2) How useful is the stand in portrait given the low viewing angle?
3) Are there holes at the back for the speaker?
Thanks a heap once again for bringing this case to our attention. I'm in a bit of a pickle at the moment as because amazon doesn't ship directly to me, I have to use a mail forwarder, which makes it something like $31...for that price I was thinking of going with the roocase easy view, especially if the stand in portrait mode doesn't really work properly.
cheers

1) Build quality is alright. Everything is great but the stand in the back is not super strong. Its very snug in the enclosure though.
2)Portrait mode isnt too great, it leans really far back and isnt too stable, landscape is the best really.
3) there are not.
if you have to use a mail forwarder and it comes out to the same price as the roocase, get the roocase. This one is just a cheap alternative for me.

Thanks for the reply
I can get the roocase for $38 delivered, so this is probably not worth it for me.
Cant go wrong if you're getting it for $13 though!
cheers, thanks again.

I had the rooCase and wasn't very happy with it. It wasn't as stable as I thought it should be for the money, and it only handled portrait mode. The hinge started to tear after just a couple of weeks. I must say though that returning it and getting a refund was very easy.

Are you able to type / tap on it in landscape mode, or is it more just for viewing?

Landscap is fine to tap on, though portrait its pretty much going to fall over if you push on it hah.

Here's another case that less than $20 shipped:
http://www.amazon.com/CrazyOnDigita...TF8&coliid=I3RDRQ6QU0UQTP&colid=1RFCYIM3A0T3N
I'm waiting on this guy (not as cheap, but I got 15% by googling "javoedge coupon):

I saw one of their more girly (flowery) cases on Amazon, and even as something I wouldn't have carried around, it struck me as more my style than a lot of what I've seen. I went to the their site, and there are a ton more designs that have that same casual vibe without the flowers.

I have had the Khomo NC case for over a month and wrote the following review on it, which is worth reading so you know the limitations of the case and are not disappointed with the features. I now have three cases and one silicone skin for the thing, plus a minicell foam stand, but I am still looking for the ideal case, which would one that folds to make a portrait or landscape stand and does not add much length or width.
-------
Khomo Nook Color Case
I bought this case for two reasons. One was the size. It is not as large as other book-type folding cases so only adds a little over a half inch to the length and width of the NC so I could still fit it in a pocket, unlike the other two folding cases I have.
The other reason was that this case has a picture-frame type flap that allows the NC to be stood up vertically or horizontally. It is flimsy, but works as long as you don't jab at the NC too hard and knock it over. And a little magnet in the flap keeps it against the case when not in use, which is nice.
Note that the product description says it only works horizontally. You can see that the flap is cut such that it should work vertically, too, like a picture frame. However, the flap is cut incorrectly such that when it is used vertical, it leans and is likely to fall over. Trimming the flap to the correct angle fixed this, though, and then it can be used vertically, but you really have to be careful or it can still fall over due to how small and flimsy the flap is.
The BIG problem with the flap is that it is mounted the wrong way for landscape use if you use a video player or play landscape games like Angry Birds. It puts the NC button on the left which makes the display upside-down since all the android video players and most landscape mode games require that the button be on the right side. That's a big problem and there is no way to fix it. Browsers, email, and other android apps work fine on the NC in landscape mode in either direction, though. Video players inside a browser, like YouTube, work too.
The bottom line is that this case works okay if you don't expect to prop it up while you watch videos (or play games), and since that is the reason most people would buy a stand for this type of device, it's a big fail. But if you don't expect to do this, it works fine as a case and deserves a 3 star rating despite the flimsy and miscut flap since it is handy and does protect the NC. If you want to use a video player or play games while the NC is propped in the case, though, it is a one-star product and you will be returning it as soon as you find that the stupid flap is mounted incorrectly.

That's basically my beef with the case.

Again, my case isn't super cheap, but it's cheaper than most of the B&N cases, and working great as a stand. It's more versatile in portrait than landscape mode (landscape the cover flap has to stick out somewhere, either to the side or at an angle), but it stays where you put it.

I like it!

Updated: AT&T Gel Case, Body Glove Pattern Soft Shell Case

This isn't the case for someone who doesn't want to modify it...
Problem:
The case covers the power, shutter and volume buttons. The case does not allow enough room between the button and case.
Result:
Power button and shutter buttons are pressed under the case and often results in powering off.
Solution:
Different case or Dremel your gel case to open up holes This will make it so your finger has to actually work a tiny amount into the case. Accidental presses are gone for me now.
Mod for yourself if you have the tools:
Dremel with a pointy sanding bit.

Confirmed! Total POS.
I saw the cases at the store and didn't like them. Hopefully some good ones come out.
Agreed! Totally useless. Looks awesome but too tight on my phone and powers it off. Returning mine now. Going to get the silver hard one. Will let you know.
Yeah they almost talked me into it but I was strong. Thanks for the info; glad I didn't get it.
Yeah I made the mistake of buying one of the gel cases... It's HORRIBLE!
I'm going to return it later and buy a amzer case on amazon when I buy my microsd card.

I was going to return mine but a different problem popped up and it made me realize this case could help me.
Lots of people are reporting accidental power button and camera button presses. This case makes it worse. Thus my awful review.
I am a bit lazy though and refused to look online or return the gel case.
I had previously taken a dremel to the inside of the gel case to allow for more clearance. Well it helped but I still was hitting the power button accidentally...
So it made me think of other cases I have had, why not just cut out those button holes?
So here it is, the modified gel case and it is awesome. No more accidental presses and no need to return anything or buy anything extra.

I picked up the grey incipio shell case. I like it. I only got it because my gf works at the att store so only got it for $10.
Nice job! I got the same case and already took it off
I simply returned mine
I went back and got the casemate red and black one. Muche better buttons that this POS

I had one of those cases and although it was nice, try getting your phone out of it. You almost have to cut the damn thing out.
Weird. I must be the only one who has the case on my phone and it works perfectly. I must be lucky and got one of the Body Glove cases that was made right.
Never had a problem with any of the buttons and I use my phone a lot. I guess if it starts giving me problems, I will have to modify it.
I have the Case Mate Pop, and its an awesome case. Its built like a tank and will have no worries about dropping the phone knowing my phone is well protected. Highly recommended. The Incipio feather case, does not protect it all if you dropped it on its top or bottom, because those areas are not protected it will break or severely scratched up. The Body glove Mirage case is an odd case because you need to mod it, unlike the case for the Captivate. This one does not have the cut outs for the buttons.

whoever is very good on handling with care a dremel, you probably want to just "sand/reduce some of the interal space around the buttons, without creating a whole.
I am not that good, but I was able to do the internal "reduction" in the power button and it works... I messed with the Camera Shutter (My reduction ends in a whole for the shooter). You may like to try reduction first, as te external look of the cover remains.

Would an xacto knife work?
For cutting the hole, yes; but, for reducing from inside, you may like to try better with Sandpaper if you don't have a dremel

NOOK color case with kickstand?

Im looking for a hard case that snaps to the back and has a kickstand like an EVO
i see some mentioned here that prop up but those are the leather/book covet type. Im looking for a hard one that pops on the back and has a kickstand that retracts when not in use

The roocase is nice. I'm using it now. I good quality and durable, a bit on the thick side, it has multiple angle viewing for portrait mode, and will hold itself up in landscape too. Overall I like it better than any other cover available. You do have to unplug from power to open the case, this is very annoying. I I wish it moved the the plug to the side, but beggars can't be choosers.

I know that a company called Abas (do a google search for Abas Accessories if you're interested) will be having some cases for the NookColor in the near future. They will be similar to their Tabbed Folio cases for the iPad and have the kick stand built into the case for 2 different viewing angles. I am really excited - I've bought several notebook & iPod cases from them and they're beautiful cases.

It'll fit in the first one, but the leather across the top will cover the top half inch of the screen. You could possibly trim the leather to fit, probably not worth it.
I currently own the executive tan case for the NookColor from B&N, and I just ordered this kickstand:

I use a Spiderpodium by Breffo as a stand, the original works just fine and is smaller to fold up and take with you, cheaper as well than the huge tablet version. Also can work as a tripod for a camera, stand for cellphone, etc.

I ended up getting of of these at Target for $5 and it works very well: http://www.target.com/2-Pk-Easels-6/dp/B002C5M4D2/ref=sc_qi_detailbutton. I also padded the back half of the ledge with foam strips (the kind you put on car speakers) to put the nook in between that and the lip so it is nice and sturdy.
Folds up decently well. I will have to see how it holds up to travel.

Thanks for the pic so we could see the device on a NC. Question, do you think two of the arms would be able wrap around a headrest bar in a vehicle? I saw a sample of that option in an amazon picture with a cell, but wasnt sure if possible with a larger NC?
Yep, the one in the picture is the smaller, orginal spiderpodium.
I'm using one I bought from Barnes and Noble that works pretty well and has a flip style with kickstand but after seeing the roocase I'm wishing I would have went with that.
Anybody have one of these from BoxWave?
There are zero reviews for it on Amazon. Looks nice, good price, and I want something w/ a kickstand.

I think that's not too big a problem since the case is silicone, so I suspect you can press the buttons. They seem to thin the case out there so that the lights show through. They do something similar with all the other buttons, too (volume etc). They're covered with a thiner region of silicone. The only holes are the proximity sensors, and where jacks go in (headphones, USB, HDMI, speaker, microphone, strap) and whatever that big button-looking thing is that isn't on our phone. The korean text says "DMB" there which based on some quick googling refers to the Motoroi's TV tuner--it's strange that everything else is covered, so perhaps that's a place you attach an antenna or something. It's interesting. I sort of feel like the silicone coming so close to the edge of the screen might interfere with using the scrollbar depending on how "sticky" the silicone is.
Got mine from Ebay. Very fast Delivery. 7 days from Korea to Singapore.

For those who wants to order the SGP ultra capsule for Motoroi, better buy the new black leather case also from SGP. The rubber capsule doesn't look and feel as premier as the phone, so you decide.

+1 recommendation
Just thought I would put my 2 cents in, the case is great and fits very well, I got one from korea through ebay and it came with a screen protector which is also really good. Very sturdy best case I have ever had for a phone.
One thing to keep in mind, the extra distance that the usb flap has to travel caused mine to fall off, not really an issue for me as I found it a little annoying but I would still like it to be on my phone if given a choice. Also the phone "feels" a little plasticy once you install it, it is a totally psychological thing but the phone does not feel as elegant once its on.
All in all tops
Oh, so I got this a little bit ago finally after about 5 weeks shipping. The case itself was a good fit for the most part, except for on the side where one part was popping out and not fitting tightly on like the rest of the case. Whether this was something to do with the way the case was packaged/stored or some other reason I don't know. After working with and trying to squeeze that part to fit, it's not as bad -though it still sticks out a bit. Probably will be fully gone once I wrap something around it and leave it on for a good little while (like an elastic wound tightly would probably do it).
Other than that, the case fits well. But the places around openings (i.e. camera button, power button, etc...) seem roughly cut and unpolished, though it isn't a very big deal, just slight quibble (and may just be mine).
The screen protector which comes with it is not as special as advertised I think, but it does the job and has a good smooth feel to it - and cleans more easily, so I like it.
The thing is, while the case looks nice, fits nice etc... the phone just looks and feels so much better without it on (slimmer, sleeker, nicer to hold etc...), so when I don't need the protection I take it off. But definitely a worthwhile purchase nonetheless.
I am getting my xt720 this week and am now looking for a case. i would really like to get a sgp capsule in black, though it seems like they discontinued this colour and now only sell blue and red.
any news on that front?
thx

"Home-made" Smart Case.

I've managed to get hold of a bunch of flip cases that "should" fit the Nexus 7.
Going to attempt to modify it by installing a magnet to re-create the "smart case" idea, but most likely add a few other features like a holder for a stylus, or a channel to run a USB OTG cable inside of the case. I'll post some pictures when I put one together.
Anyone else making their own?

I had no trouble making my own Smart-case. Luckily the way the case was designed I was able to make the magnet flush with the case. Here is a picture.

I also put together a video showing the case in action.

I tried making my own case but the problem I have is that once I find a magnet strong enough to activate the "Sleep/Wake" function on the front it is also strong enough to put it to sleep when I have the cover folded to the back. I have watched a bunch of video reviews of the numerous cases with the "Smart" function and they never fold the cover to the back to see if it activates the function while you're holding it in that manner.

I will send you a video tomorrow of it when flipped back. The answer is that it does not turn the screen off when folded back. However it does not fold flush due to the design of the case. kind of a quirk and slightly awkward to hold.

Upon further research I have found that the cases online probably use some sort of "shield" that deflects the magnetic field, such as iron, (shim)steel, or muMetal.
I'm curious, where did you acquire the magnet you're using? I have tried all kinds of magnets around the house and even bought some from a craft store with varying strengths. And it would either not be strong enough or too strong (when using with the case I have).

I cut it out of a stuffed animal fridge magnet. The poor moose didn't see that one coming. I also see these magnets in the magnetized clips you can hang things off the fridge. If you live near a craft store like michaels or jo ann fabrics you could bring yoru device and try all their magnets their  . But I also had trouble with most typical fridge magnets

Yeah, I tried that at the local Hobby Lobby with no such luck. It seems other people are reporting the problem with cases bought online here and here. I'm just going to see if I can find some steel or something to shield it. Thanks for the help.
Also, I wanted to thank you for that video on Youtube about the OTG cable and PS3 controller working "out of the box". I ordered the same cable as soon as I saw that. Can't wait to play Dead Trigger with a controller.
Try both sides the the magnet. Theoretically it shouldn't matter but I've had different results with different sides of a magnet.

Have a small Neodymium magnet barley strong enough to work through the front of the case, then mounted on the inside of the case in the cover. So with the case folded all the way back it is not strong enough to activate the sensor.
I really want to try to make something out of fabric and cardboard. I'm such a ***** when it comes to my devices. Even with cases I always sit them on napkins and coasters haha.
Plus I want something thin that just protects the back and has a thin flap. Nothing fancy just something that doesn't add 3x the thickness of the N7.
Maybe superglue a flap on haha. Stupid Apple and their awesome smartcase. I'm also concerned about a case hindering access to the buttons. They are already a pain to access when laying on a flat surface.

Flip cases that do not cover notification LED, USB and volume rocker

I've searched and searched but so far found nothing perfect.
I'm looking for a case that is thin and protects the screen. Something like the original Samsung flip case, but better designed.
I have some requests that so far have killed ALL the cases I've seen - I found none yet matching all:
Must haves:
1-Notification LED visible as I want to be able to glance at the phone on the desk and be aware of new SMS/calls without having to open it.
2-USB dock accessible as I often charge the phone in places where having the case open wouldn't be handy
3-Volume/Power buttons easily accessible, preferably, exposed directly.
4-Cutout for speaker and mic, so that calls can be maintained after the case is flipped closed.
5-SPen easily accessible.
Nice to have:
6-If possible, it should be vertical-oriented and not be too thick, nor fugly.
So far I found no flip cover that matches at least ALL the first 5 requests. Any suggestions? Thanks.
I have the oem flip cover and although it covers the volume button it is thin and I've had no problem adjusting the volume while it's closed. I always use it closed when I'm in a call. Keeps my yucky face off the screen.
Just a little input for you in case you haven't actually handled the phone with this flip cover installed.
As far as the led cut out I know I watched a you tube review of a flip cover case that had a cut out for led.I remember because the guy doing the review got it wrong at first and thought the opening was for the camera...then turned the phone over and saw the blinking led...
Trying to remember which case though. Saw it in one of these threads....

Btw...oem flip cover does not in any way affect the usb port...

As for the Samsung default case, keeping it closed might be indeed handy while on calls. I have imagined myself holding it with the case on the back but it doesn't seem comfortable. If the volume buttons remain easily pressible even with the cover, I guess I can live with that.
However, the covers block the screen, so during the day at work I will not be able to quickly realize if there is an SMS or other event (we usually have the phones on vibrate and on the desk). Being able to see the led would be great as that would allow to keep the cover closed. Surprising to see how samsung finally added LEDs to SGS3 and Note 2 but didn't bother to make them visible on the case.
Going to try to google some more, perhaps something with a LED cutout shows up.
Found it. I must be bored today!

The noreve leather flip case. Has cut outs for all buttons and the led.
It flips vertically instead of to the side...
Link is for a review which also has pics and a video. Looks like they're pricey but very nice quality.
I should probably get off the couch note and actually do something today...

Thanks planetbeen, that is exactly the format I was looking for. It is amazing how hard it is to find flip cases with LED cutouts. If the screen is completely covered, I figured having the LED visible would be useful in any case.
about 47 Eur/65 USD. Pricey, but1 the materials look good and there are cutouts for notification LED and even camera. There's even a belt clip option available for 6 Eur. Nice, very nice.

Now that I grabbed the free flip cover from the Facebook promo, when it gets here, I will drill a hole in the cover where the notification light is.
I bought the LGND Premium Hard-Shell Folio It's not too bad. I like. You can kinda see the light come thru center ear mesh hole area.
I took a better look at the Noreve and sadly, it seems they forgot something... there is no cutout for the USB dock. That means you cannot charge the device without opening the flip. Very annoying and not practical in some cases.
Also, the phone cannot be used on calls with the flip closed... there is no cutout for the speaker nor the mic at bottom. Nothing in the designed seemed to make this impossible, but they simply decided not to add it or overlooked the feature.
I guess my search for a flip case with "cut out holes for everything" remains active... there are several cases that have SOME of the features but so far, none with all cutouts.

Any brand using this layout but adding cutouts for the speaker, mic and USB would make some good money, IMHO...

Buy any case that you like an use a quality leather punch to achieve your goal. Scared, visit a local leather/craft shop and they will probably do it for you for free.

I tried to do an LED mod on a few cases, but it failed. I used a leather hole punch and got a perfect circle cut out where the LED is. I used ridiculously strong epoxy to glue the metal studs on for a different flare. Also, the weight of the studs really keep it closed (although it really does seem to stay closed nicely. Fits the phone perfectly, very minimal.

Modding the leather is a possibility. Should be easy for the led light, as easy as punching a new hole in a belt. Not so sure about the USB port.
Still, it feels a bit wrong to have that trouble with cases costing a lot of money (like the Noreves) because the manufacturers don't bother to add a little tweak to new models.
If nothing perfect shows up I'll probably go with that approach tho. Don't want to drop the Note and fracture the glass like on my SGS2.
What about this one http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/noreve-tradition-b-leather-case-for-samsung-galaxy-note-2-p37232.htm

Noreve screwed up on all cover designs for the Note 2.
My favorite (model A, with the flip) has no USB/mic/speaker slots.
That side-flip one, model B that you mention, has indeed USB+Led+Mic but has no speaker for voice calls while closed. And as far as I can tell, the volume buttons are also not easily accessible while closed (I use them often while playing audio).
The quest continues. Meanwhile, I got this cheap one that has all the features I need except the LED cutout. Other than that, all buttons/holes are accessible and you can fully use it closed, including for charging and talking. Material is probably nasty, but functionality appears to be better.
Since it costs about $5, drilling the hole won't be as annoying as doing it to $50 covers. :fingers-crossed:
Still no Note II nor case but both should arrive tomorrow. I suspect the case will be acceptable but will not close all that good as it has no magnet.
If anyone else finds one matching those requests on the first post, please share... :fingers-crossed:
The Spigen SGP wallet case is the best case I currently own. It is on the expensive side but it is worth it!
I'd just be happy with a simple "Barely There"-style case that has a slot for credit cards, like the one I had on my GS2.
Going to bump this up a little as I'm wondering if there are more offers in the market now... that is, flip cases with LED holes...
Still nothing good with a LED cutout?

No led hole but could be easily made with hole puncher.

I've seen flip covers that allow for caller ID and swiping to answer without having to open the case. I'm surprised they do not have an LED cut out though.
