NETFLIX DISABLES DEVICE CHECK!!!! - [HowTo] Get Netflix working on Nook Color - Nook Color General

NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Netflix has Disabled Device Check and you can now Install straight from Market without any Hacks.
I tested and it works on my Nook Color CM7 7.0.3
For people that still have issues though, I'll leave up the HowTo.
Since people aren't looking through the Netflix App thread for the HowTos that I and other people are posting here is my HowTo.
HowTo guide for those that don't understand what build.prop is.
Android 2.3 ROMs(CM7 Stable, Phiremod, ect...)
ro.product.model=Nexus S
ro.product.manufacturer=samsung
CM7 nightlys + Android 2.2 ROMs(Stock, Froyo, ect...)
ro.product.model=HTC Vision
ro.product.manufacturer=HTC
Just make sure you backup your build.prop file before editing just in case you need to switch back.(Copy it somewhere and rename it build.prop.bak)
For Newbs:
-Remount /system as RW using Root Explorer (Open Folder then press button at the Top)
-Backup the /system/build.prop to /system/build.prop.bak (In Root Explorer just Copy it and Paste in the same place)
-Edit the file /system/build.prop with a text editor (Hold down in Root Explorer for Popup then tap "Open in Text Editor" )
-Replace each line with it's above replacements
-Make sure there are no extra spaces at the ends of lines as that can cause problems
-Save the file
-Hard Reboot
TaDa! Netflix Works!

Cool beans. Question, though: Can I download a movie from Netflix so I can watch it offline? Like on a plane? I know from my TV there is an option, basically, to start watching a movie, stop watching, and you then have 24 or 48 hours, or something, to finish watching it. And then I guess it self destructs, or something.
If you can't do this, I wonder why anyone would give a crap about watching a movie on their WiFi-only Color Nook. Most people have a TV or at least a laptop with a bigger screen...

Worked like a charm! Thanks

Desperate to find out if you NetFlix will actually stream the file to your CN and then you can watch it whenever you want, or, perhaps there's a time limit. My guess is not, but it works like that when streaming to my Blue Ray player at home. If it can;t do this, I really don't see much value in having this service. Big deal. I can watch a movie on a small screen with my 46" TV in the next room, or my 15" inch laptop 2 feet away. I want it for plane rides, where I won't have internet access.

Awesome- now to see if netflix works on Galaxy tab and use its info to hopefully get HQ

Not working for me.
Have CM7.0.0 with Android 2.3.3. So I tried the "Nexus S" and "samsung" thing first. Hard rebooted. Installed the APK. Tells me the device is not supported.
So I tried the "HTC Vision" and "HTC" ones next. Rebooted, cleared the data, removed and reinstalled the app. Still getting the same error.
Confirmed the build.prop file changes are saving properly. Not sure what went wrong for me.

So it would seem since you waited a whole 15 mins to post a second time about it.
No. No you can do what you want. This is not how netflix works. Period.

and my wife goes out of town with her nook, yes her nook. i told her, shes ready.
i hope im smart enough for the "newb" version. for real i might not be. anyone want to do pictures? !!!

awesome
Works like a charm. It's awesome.

not working for me for some reason either.
Used ES File Manager to mount /system as RW
made a backup
changed the two lines to match this.
ro.productmodel=HTC Vision
ro.productbrand=HTC
There are no unnecessary spaces in there.
powered off, and then powered back on.
get the "device not supported" message.
Running CM Nightly 72 and Dalingrin's OC running at 1.1 (hope I spelled the name right)
anybody having this problem?
Also it seemed to break YouTube when I had those settings in the build.prop file.
After I restored my backup build.prop file youtube worked fine again.

I got the beta 3.1 CM7 to run it with the Nexus S mod... well it sorta runs. It plays at super fast mode and doesnt slow down and doesnt realize its going fast forward sounds like alvin and the chipmonks

It wouldn't work for me until I changed
ro.productmodel=Vision (no HTC)
And then the ro.productmanufacturer=HTC, not brand. Maybe that could work for you.

Don't see anyone with this problem:
After changing build.prop, hard rebooting, and opening Netflix, I get an error that my device's date and time are bad and need to be fixed...
What the hell?
I have date and time manually set. Didn't matter if I turned on network time. I am on satellite internet, so wondered if it might be a signal latency issue?

Hey all,
I was wondering if anyone can walk this dummy through this using ES File Explorer. I can't for the life of me even get started on this!
Thanks in Advance!

yeah doesn't work i got it to recognize it as a nexus s but when i load a video it just buffers or does nothing.

CM7 doesn't work with youtube. I'm not sure what your intentions are, but you can't play videos until the problem with the dsp/audio code gets worked out. Fortunately, it seems they have the problem narrowed down, so when The Great One returns from spring break, he has said he plans to hit the ground running.

Delete the Youtube.apk from /system/app then just install YouTube from Market.
Also make sure you have Flash Player 10.2 from Market.
If you use the lastest version of CM7, YouTube works, but at only 15fps..
Hopefully, this will be fixed soon...

Our definitions of "working perfectly" are very different.
Also, it's my understanding that the Youtube app does not use flash. It streams an Mp4 or something for efficiency and hardware accel. The YoutubeXL app is really just a browser pointed at youtube's XL site and it uses flash (software accel)

Maybe they are and maybe not...what I am trying to say is that my youtube works perfectly...in HD...just as well as it does on my phone...I'm trying to figure out WHY. If it is truly working the way it's supposed to, I wanted to share what I had going. I know that the apk doesn't use flv....(My flash works fine, too, so maybe I accidentally did something right there, as well.) Does anyone know how to measure fps in the youtube.apk setting? Thanks.

Can't install YouTube or Google Apps CM7 SD Nook Color
When I go to the market, it displays these apps but there is no INSTALL or DOWNLoad button. It's missing from the app page. I have tried going to the developers page and the same thing happens. It's as if it doesn't recognize the NOOK Color when CM7 is running. Latest CM7 version was installed less than a week ago. NetFlix works however. Any ideas? Thanks.

Yes, thanks for the response. I read the post earlier but it referred to "updates". I wish to install the program for the first time. I have a new first-time install of CM7 and presumable it contained the new market. The apps show up but there is on Install button showing. Is this still the 160 vs 161 issue?

Okay, this was very helpful and works with brand new installs and presumable updates as well. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I'm glad I can now see the Install buttons on many more applications.
The only problem I have now is that many of the videos on YouTube give me the following error when I try to load them:
"There was a problem while playing... Touch to retry." Retrying doesn't help. The same videos load and play properly using my big Windows 7 computer. Has anyone seen this error and has a suggestion for a fix?
Thanks again.

Netflix App for Eris??

Now that this is out...will this be able to work for the Eris, or no cause we have arm6?
I got it to load and start streaming but no sound or audio and the time stayed the same. Restarts after a bit. Hadn't tried changing the build.prop yet though. No pc around. Some folks say it works on original Droid though.

Netflix on the Eris
Here's an interesting one. I tried to download the apk to my Coby 7015 tablet. It immediately downloaded the apk to my Eris. Go figure.
Installed fine and loads up. When I start a video, I get a dark screen with the "pause - fast forward" control bar at the bottom then it goes back to the netflix home screen. No audio. No video.
Logcat shows: D/TAG ( 3163): Not Android 3.x+ with drm.play.
I'm in the same boat on Gingerbread. Black screen with controls and then it eventually resets to home screen.
I downloaded the apk off of google, it installed fine and it brings everything up, but when i try to play something all i get is a message saying "the netflix service is not available on your device. please check netflix.com/netflixreadydevices for info regarding support for your device"
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=13731077#post13731077
That's the APK.
Buildprop info here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13732556&postcount=163
I'd say just wait for a full hack.
I just edited the build.prop using this http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/ha5oh/root_how_to_edit_your_buildprop_to_make_netflix/
so far, the app runs, and it looks as if its going to start streaming, but i just get a black screen with the pause botton. Idk if wifi will work ill try it when I get some, its on 3g now.

but do u think for the eris it will come and still have the support being as its an old model?
The Eris will never have official support from Netflix. Basically, there's a set of DRM libs baked into the officially supported phones. These hacks are attempting to trick the app into thinking the phone is a supported phone with supported DRM libs. However, it's not working on the Eris even with the build.prop mods. I'd like to see a logcat of the problem, but I really believe it has to do with the DRM libs not being satisfied and possibly crashing media libs like most older devices.
I'm waiting for somebody to just package a fake build.prop and DRM spoof into a modified Netflix app. I'm sure it can be done, I just don't know what the Netflix servers check the app for. MD5 and DRM version?
I can't even get the apk to install. I've downloaded it, but I get no option to install it from astro or from the downloads menu on the browser. How do you install this damn thing? I even downloaded app installer, but it doesn't seem to recognize it as a valid apk.
Works fine for me. The only thing is that the app itself is massive compared to all the other ones I have. Due to the fact that it sucks down a lot of memory and power, I think I'll be fine with the Netflix app on my iPod/iPad/Xbox/laptop/whathaveyou

Seconded. I've tried 2 different ways both editing and not editing the build.prop
no dice on either, just the "black screen with pause button" tease, on both WIFI and 3G. Also tried on 2 other Eris' (erisii?? lol) with same results, one running XTRsense, and 2 running GSB 3.3
so what ROM are you on, what did you do specifically to enable streaming vid?
I third that. On gsb 3.3 and my dice are also missing. Netflix is the only reason why I would ever get rid of my eris

[Edit][Fix for issues with GPS and other apps] HD2 Netflix Master Hack.

First of all, read everything! Second, click the link to see a picture of what the build.prop should look like. And lastly, I am not responsible for you being lazy and inpatient.
First of all, I take no credit for it, I just want to move it here for other users who might have not seen it. All credit goes to Sprintusa.
This even makes the quality of Netflix even better! Just follow the link to the post which was posted inside a thread of the Android Apps forum. I used it and it worked great!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13952218&postcount=722
EDIT: I will re-do all my steps and check if this still functions. I will post results here.
EDIT 2: Okay, so here's something strange, before I even went back to the original build.prop settings I uninstalled Netflix from my apps. Then went into the Market and downloaded the Netflix app from there and it worked fine for me. As I'm writing this South Park (Dances with Smurfs) is streaming perfectly.
EDIT 3: I re-did everything except for use the APK listed in the link. I didn't use any APK. After I edited the original build.prop settings I saved and rebooted. Went into Market and installed Netflix from there. I can say that this works on my HD2 running latest Hyperdroid CM7. The only issue would be that the Stock Navigation app disappears. And some issues with a few apps.
PLEASE MAKE SURE TO TYPE IN "machimachi" INSTEAD OF "mahimahi"
FINAL EDIT:Okay so I figured out how to get Netflix working and all other apps that seemed to have issues to remain fine. It's rather a simple task but I will write out everything step by step in this post.
STEP ONE: Edit build.prop settings to;
ro.product.model=Nexus One
ro.product.brand=google
ro.product.name=passion
ro.product.device=passion
ro.product.board=machimachi
ro.product.manufacture=HTC
After you do so, tap the menu button and select Save & Exit, it should also save a backup copy of the original build.prop. Make sure it does because it's needed for later! Afterwards reboot phone.
STEP 2: This is an easy step, after phone reboots, go to the Market and Netflix should be there, download it. Now sign in and make sure you watch something, please do this so it can register on the Netflix site that you're on a Nexus One. After you do so, exit Netflix.
STEP 3:Now go back to your build.prop file, hold on it and select "delete."
Make sure you do NOT delete the one that says "build.prop.bak."
Okay, all you have to do now is hold onto the file build.prop.bak and rename if to "build.prop"
The icon should change back to the original build.prop icon. Now reboot phone!
And Whaaaa-Laaaaa! Netflix working as well as all other apps that were affected by the Master hack.
Worked fine for me, my TyphooN build wouldn't show it in the market.
Used ES Explorer to edit the build.prop file (enable writable root in settings).

This hack does work but be aware of odd issues noted afterward.
I edited my build prop file exactly as shown in the post and installed the posted apk, and although the attached screenshot shows "mahimahi" not "machimachi" as the post itself shows I used machimachi. But on my hd2 when I shut off and restarted the phone I found these settings immediately breaks the GPS and makes my stock navigation (blue arrow) icon and its associated app. Inoperable. So I reverted back to my original build prop settings, saved, rebooted. Then downloaded the uppdated Netflix app (will add link to this post when I find it again), and Netflix, GPS, Navigation icon and it's app works normally again.

[Q] How can I download DeadSpace?

After reading some positive reviews and seeing a video showing it working on a TouchPad running Android, I decided to buy DeadSpace. I made the purchase through market.android.com, but I can't download it because the Market app says it's not compatible with my device. Does anyone have a recommendation for how to download this game now that I've bought it? Can I change the device ID or something to make the market think my TouchPad is something that is compatible?
Thanks!

ro.product.model=Touchpad
ro.product.brand=HP
to
ro.product.model=GT-i9100
ro.product.brand=samsung

u didn't change manufacturer on purpose?
Wasn't needed.
By the way I tested and this didn't make this particular game show up. Will look into some more when I get a chance.

Actually this did work for me and I was able to download the game. I did have to clear cache on Market and clear data on Google Services Framework, then reboot, but once I did, it showed up. I had to perform these steps on my Nook Color back in the day as well...
So now that it's installed, the game starts and says it needs to download 300+MB. I tell it to do so and it immediately shows an empty dialog with only an "Exit" button, after which it exits. I can't get past that. Any ideas?
Also, I installed Chainfire3D and the Nvidia plugin. Is that necessary? Is that correct for the TouchPad? Is there any other configuration that I should do for this to work well?
Thanks much for the help!
You could try the other plugins powervr or qualcomm
Glad you were able to get it downloaded. Not sure on the download issue though.
If you have another supported device you could try downloading the files on it and moving them over - or see if someone has posted the sdcard files somewhere.
Have the exact same issue with Dead Space. Asphalt 6 HD works like a charm though. I'm looking for answers but I get the same response.... wash, rinse, repeat (wipe, clear cache, repeat thrice...)
Haven't tried doing the 3-peat yet. If anyone else has and has achieved success after having the same issue with this game, let us know!

Success! Took a while though.....
So I updated my build.prop to the Pyramid device... (sorry, no link where I found that, but GT-i9100 should do fine too). Then I side loaded the main apk like suggested in previous threads. Then I copied the root folder from my Evo where I already had it installed to my PC and transferred the folder to my TP like it was already fully installed.
From there it still said my device wasn't supported, so I installed the powervr plugin for chainfire3d, used in-app settings through chainfire.
Here's where it got weird: I kept getting the same error over and over of my device not being supported. Then my wifi connected and when I ran the game, it immediately searched for an update. Apparently it found one! Suddenly I'm up and running, smooth as silk.
Now gonna try Real Racing 2!

Anyone know a solution for this? I'm getting the same issue. I'm running Jensen 2.8 lite with the buildprop changes and also installed chainfire3d with all the pluggins. No go
Okay, I used my Nook Color to download the data, transferred that back to the TouchPad, and launched it successfully. When it starts rendering 3D, though, it's all white with no textures. What Chainfire3D settings are folks using on the TouchPad that work?
I have read somewhere to use the following option for chainfire 3D as this is the GPU-manufacturer:
qualcomm
it may be worth a try.

Yeah, I've tried all three plugins with the various options enabled and disabled. No go. Has anyone gotten this going with A3.5? Between this and the lockups in Currents and other Webkit apps, I'm strongly considering going back to the previous alpha.
Okay, I finally got this working. I moved back to A2.1 which didn't actually fix anything (though it does seem to have resolved the lockups in Webkit-based apps like Google Reader and Currents, though they're not as smooth when they're working), but then I purchased the full version of Chainfire 3D and launched Dead Space using per-app settings. Suddenly it worked perfectly! I don't know why that would make a difference...perhaps I just didn't know how to use the free version. Either way, $4 is a small price to pay for the added flexibility of the full version of Chainfire 3D, and of course now I have a working, silky smooth Dead Space! Woohoo!
UPDATE: Okay, I know the magic incantation now. This works under A3.5 (and therefore presumably XRON) just fine if you use the PowerVR plugin in ChainFire 3D. I didn't have to reduce texture quality or anything else, just set the plug-in to PowerVR. I hope this helps others get this really nice looking game going on their TouchPads!

EA Games

Sorry if this has been posted before, I did a search, but couldn't find anything...
I bought a few of the EA games back when the market had a sale, and I've gotten Shadowgun and Dead Space to work on the 03/22 nightly with Rohan's super mod pack (build.prop is spoofed as a Galaxy S II, I think), but the Play store keeps telling me that my device is incompatible with Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit. I can find it on the store, view the page and all, but it keeps saying "Your device is incompatible with this version." It's available on a legit Galaxy S II, so I'm wondering if this incompatibility is due to the build.prop missing some other entry or if it's just the market being silly. Any help is appreciated.
Very surprised you got Dead Space working, I have not been able to get a single EA Game to work on my TP. I get 5002 errors and I have even tried to side load the SD data with no luck...

I just ended up side loading the SD data from a friend's tablet, it worked fine. I did have to change the Chainfire plugin to nVidia before it would run though. On PowerVR, the entire screen went white.
Perfect thread. I was about to ask what device name should be used in build prop to allow Dead Space to run. I had it running briefly on my Nook Color but went back to a standard build prop. Does anybody have the line handy in build prop with a device name that I could try? (Like a Galaxy or what not)

The model I'm using is the SGH-t989, the TMobile Galaxy S II. If you boot into recovery and flash this mod (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1519161), it should give you a working build.prop. Sorry I don't have the actual lines handy, but I got mine from the mod.

I got Dead Space working using the Modpack from the link above and then installing Chainfire3D Pro setting the Per-App feature with the NVIDIA plugin. Graphics are mind blowing on my TP!
It was money well spent for the App.

Just where do I get the nVidia plugin....just how do I properly install it on Chainfire3d?

Plugins are here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1443794
I highly recommend installing the pro version of Chainfire3D and using the Per-App feature for each game and plugin.
Installing: After downloading the plugins to your directory, run the app and select install plugins/shaders. The app will run a tedious search for the zip files and present you with the results, then just select the plugins you want installed.
After the plugins are installed I suggest you reboot then run the game.
Best,
Going back to the original question, anyone know why NFS:HP isn't working on the Touchpad? Spoofed as a GS2, running ICS nightly 03/22 and Rohan's Supermod pack.
I'll give the new Rohan mods a try.
To those who have successfully installed dead space; do you notice hitching, especially when moving laterally with the graphics? Its not game breaking but it definitely isn't smooth when I have played it

It's working fine for me. I haven't had much time to play lately, but as of chapter 3, there's been no graphical artifacts using the nVidia plugin.
Bumping the NFS:HP issue though. No one has any sliver of an idea? I'd really hate to have bought it for nothing.

Dead Space works great for me, I guess I don't know what you mean by "hitching".
As for NFS, I have NFS: Shift and not Hot Pursuit.. I was able to get Shift working with the NVIDIA plugin using Chainfire, the game starts out good with menus, setting, options what not but when it comes to race time the accelerometer on the Touchpad seems to only work correctly while holding the Touchpad in a portrait position all the while the game continues to play out in landscape mode. Gets rough on your neck after a few laps..hehe
As for getting the APK and data onto your Touchpad requires a little extra work on your part.
I used "Bluetooth File transfer" (free in the market) to get the NFS apk sent from my LG G2x over to my Touchpad.
I installed BTFT onto both the devices so as to avoid issues with transfering.
From my G2x:
1) Using BTFT, Menu >More >Send Applications >select NFS > Send
2) Find your Touchpad on the list of BT Devices that comes up - if none then Menu >Search Devices (Make sure your TP is discoverable first)
Once the APK is sent over to your TP you can install it. I think the Default file transfer directorythat BTFT uses is "/SDCard".
Next you will need to send over the Data Files from the Game. The location is Android>Data>
Find the folder that looks something like "com.eamobile.nfs_hotpursuit" OR simular for NFS Shift it was "com.eamobile.nfsshift_na_wf".
Copy the complete folder to the same directory on your Touchpad.
If you don't have the folder in that directory on your phone then you have yet to download the data needed to run the game.
DO That first then go back and follow the steps.
Sound confusing enough? Good coz I'm just as lost! hehe..
G'luck
Haven't had a chance to side load it yet, but I'm bumping to see if anyone has any idea as to why the Play store won't let a Galaxy S II download NFS.
You can always just download it via touchpad and side load to phone if phone isn't compatible.

Heres a good tutorial on changing your build.prop. This guy has a lot of good videos by the way.

The phone is compatible, but I'm using a Touchpad that's spoofed as a GS2 in the build.prop. Which is why I'm confused the Play store won't let me download it on to my Touchpad.
