[Q] SGS vs Desire S? Which to get? HELP! - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, im writing for a friend as he wants some advice.
he is choosing between both these smartphones (No others - as he can't afford newer ones, i.e - sgs2)
He is in a dilemna between the both.. he prefably wants a larger screen + better colours. but the desire s is newer, has a slightly better cpu etc.
Which one is better? Will the SGS get updated to gingerbread and beyond?
Which has better battery life in general? Is the SGS still a good phone even though it is 1 year old?
Thanks for responses!

This is a galaxy forum, so the answer from here is obvious! ;p

yeh, haha i thought that would be the response. but perhaps some honest ppl who have had a sgs for a while can give my friend feedback on it and how the device is, whther it is worth it or the desire s.

If you are into rooting and running custom roms, then the sgs for definate

thanks! But what if you are not for the average user... is the sgs good out of the box? personally my sgs 2 is good out of the box.. what about this? thanks!

Sgs is naff outa the box, laggy n crap, but v good once tweaked

Galaxy S, of course
You can already flash gingerbread and there are lots of custom roms.
Using cm7, it's blazing fast and you can overclock it up to 1.5Ghz with some kernels (but most phones can only reach 1.4Ghz or 1.44Ghz stable, which is still a 40%+ overclock)
So if you wanted a better cpu... well the cpu is a real beast. And you can't beat that screen.
Imo if you're not afraid to flash, the galaxy S is just awesome.
btw, the battery of the desire s is a little bit smaller than the one on the galaxy s, but I don't know about the battery life.
But yeah, the desire s might be better out of the box, since without lagfix the galaxy s isn't all that great...
The only advantage the desire s has other than that is more RAM.

Thanks! Will it get the official update too?

is it also true the Desire S supports 14.4 mb/s speed while the sgs is only 7.2mb/s...?
Will there be a great difference?

is this "friend" hypothetical ? lol
SGS will get Gingerbread officially yes, Some users have it official at the moment , dependant on the location in the world.
i too would suggest SGS, The desire is a good phone and i doubt your "friend" would be disappointed if they chose it.
BUT !!! as mentioned before the SGS is awesome when tweaked, loads of excellent developers making it even more awesome. and the screen..... its unbeatable
But as a conclusion, the SGS is a year old, why not get your "friend" to invest in an SGS2 ??

My friend is very non-tech and is a n00b at modding he wants a phone now lol, he cant wait as he's going on a looong holiday soon and wants a good phone... it's his choice haha.
nice it has GB update! But i heard the sgs has bad gps problems.... :/ also the pro abt the sgs is it has 8gb storage > 1.1gb sotrage on the desire s..
Is a sgs non-tweaked out the box stable/good?

GPS can be affected on a scale of things,
But there are countless threads / apps / tweaks to make it better, I personally dont have any GPS issues and never did when i was on a stock ROM.
if your friend is happy with a nice stable phone with many uses then a stock SGS will suit him fine.
however if he is like a lot of us android users and wants to hack the crap out of his SGS he will be jizzing in his pants .... lol
The sgs comes in a 16 GB version too.... and sd card upto 32GB so plenty and plenty of storage
EDIT: i was happy running stock ROMS - but i knew i could get more from my phone so i got involved with the wrong crowd, ended up becoming an addict and now i have withdrawal symptoms if i dont get my daily fix DAMN YOU XDA !!! lol

Haha, thanks for the info mate, it's much appreciated!" i guess that could clear things up a bit for him! The only minor con in the gs is it has 512 ram which doesnt seem much compared to the desire s 768mb haha.. i also kind of get where your heading .
my tab is so damn laggy and i have been on the stock rom since i got it.. tempted to flash now..

unused RAM is wasted RAM.
take no notice of things like that, you will hear a lot about quadrant scores , RAM tweaks and so on.
if your phone feels fast for YOU thats all that matters, if you want a little extra speed then you can have it lol.
its all about finding the right balance for YOU, dont always panic about not having the newest ROM / Kernel / update and so on...
and by saying YOU - i mean your friend lol

thanks lol But why do lots of reviews say more RAM makes it smoother??? If it is just going to waste??
hopefully performance should be satisying enough

well its like RAM on a PC - it can make multi tasking smoother, but if you have 1GB of RAM and eveything you do uses 0.5GB of RAM, that extra is wasting away.
dont buy in to the hype of more is better, its not always the case, if it feels quick and responds quick, and that satisfies you, thats the main point.
Hell !! i would like a super computer with 10GB RAM - 5TB hard drive and so on... But my current PC does everything i want and it does it quick...... if ya catch my drift ?

Bump, still open to opinions believe it or not! he has 2 great offers for both devices.,.
will sgs still need 'fixes' after GB update?
cheers guys

As long as Samsung uses RFS as a file-system I believe it will always need a lagfix. I doubt they will ever get it right.
With every update people keep saying it's not required anymore, but when using a single ROM for more than 3 weeks it is imho.
I had XWJS3 for 4 weeks and it started lagging like hell.
So for average-users I tend to recommend HTC.

Any good ROMs for Galaxy S

Hello ,
Now im thinking which phone to buy. I like Galaxy S but i read that samsung have a lot of problems(gps, lag, slow UI, Very slow when you install more programs, slow on multitasking) and etc. So is there good ROM for Galaxy S to fix it and make a galaxy as functional as htc desire ?
if you want to be able to mod your phone easy my advice is stay away from samsung, I have one and its very unfriendly
There are no true custom roms for the Galaxy S yet, there are modded roms that reqire specific base roms first.
Cyanogenmod has the Galaxy Series on it's roadmap but there is no working release yet.
HTC phones are the best if you want many options for custom roms and quick releases of future updates but overall I am pretty happy with my Galaxy S even though I do miss the options I had with my Magic in terms of roms.
Im not looking a phone to mod it, im asking are the ROMs will make galaxy much better than stock and functional like a HTC Desire ? Because its necsesary to write a rom in a galaxy S

I never had any issues with GPS on my phone, it worked fine for me driving around.
The lag is a minor annoyance at best. The new JPH Froyo build seems to be running pretty well for me so far, just installed it this morning and is solid thus far.
What??
I have purchased HTC for year and I never happy with it!
Now have a Galaxy S and it is another, better world!
For the first time, after many year with htc device, have seen my Galaxy S in top of all other device in Quadrant benchmark, 2307! From now, Samsumg rock!
I still have Eclair JM7, but it is always stable, fast UI, no problem with gps at all(as already sayd), a lot of apps installed ...all good!
The only thing, have installed clagfix.
Who had say to you that things, probably doesn't know Galaxy S

Highly doubt you got that score without One Click Lag Fix. The normal Quadrant score is around 800. If it wasn't for the people on XDA our phones won't be anywhere near as awesome as they are now !

Well, if choice is between desire or galaxy s, you can choose the sgs with your eyes closed. As soon as we will have a stable froyo with voodoo kernel stable release, this phone will ROCK! I would wait new HTC models though...

He said he used CLagFix, so very possible to get 2k+ Quadrant.
As for GPS stuff, my GPS works 60% of the time, and struggles the rest, I feel like it's kind of hit and miss depending on which ROM you are using, GPS settings, possibly area you are in, etc.
Also, I absolutely love this phone(I have a captivate but w/e still a Galaxy S, and I use I9000 ROM's anyway), and find it pretty easy to mod, and it's pretty much unbrickable.

Not true really TBH. Look at how much hassle you have to go to to root a HTC Desire for example with creating a goldcard then flashing an old firmware the finally being able to root it where as the Galaxy can be done from a simple update zip.
Yes, but we cannot be sure customs roms will eventually arrive. Imho all devs will go for Desire Hd and Desire Z

The lag is becoming less of an issue with newer ROMs but the GPS has a problem with accuracy regardless of what anyone here tells you. GPS was slow to fix in earlier firmwares but corrected in subsequent releases, this led some to claim that GPS is fixed, you'll see several comments from people waxing lyrical about getting GPS signal indoors when they couldn't before, but take it out into inner city roads when traffic is crawling a bit and it gets very confused placing you in the wrong lanes/directions etc due to poor accuracy.... basically it fails where even my old HTC magic excels, however drive on wide lane motorways and it's near flawless because accuracy isn't as critical.
Personally I'll still choose the SGS ahead of the Desire, but if you're not willing to tinker at all, then wait to see what improvements froyo delivers or choose the Desire because the JF3 firmware that ships out with most is awful, frustrating... useless!!

If it took you 5 mins then it's true. It probably took less than 30 secs to root my SGS.
If I knew what I know today
.... I would never have traded my Nexus One for a Galaxy S. Here's why:
Spec wise the Galaxy S is the better phone. In real world, its utterly horrible. I suspect that the phone has not problems in the hardware, but the software really kills the experience.
What's great about it:
- It has Swype keyboard, and thats really impressive. Alas, it's not something Samsung created, they just bought it.
- Great camera application with lots of functions, takes great pictures. This is in my opinion the best thing Samsung has brought to this product.
- Acceptable battery lifetime, compared to similar phones.
- Reliable bluetooth operation, this is my first Android phone that works every time and all the time in my car.
What I expected but did not get:
- A screen that performed better outdoors. I washes out completely, and is not any better than the other phones I have had. It is bigger though.
What's driving me nuts:
- Exchange sync sucks bigtime. I keep loosing all my contacts until I force sync it again. My calendar doesnt work at all. Coming from CM6 on Nexus One I'm used to everything just working.
- Lag. This is supposed to be a fast phone. It's not in any way fast doing anything at all. If I upgrade an application from the Market, I can forget about using the phone until it has finished installing. Its a snail, and I don't care if its caused by the filesystem, the kernel or just Samsungs programmers. Its totally unacceptable and shows that this phone should not have been released. (Oh yeah, I am running lagfix, that doesnt really help, it just pushes the problem a bit ahead in time)
What Samsung couldn't bother to implement:
- Working GPS. My Nexus One and HTC Magic has far better GPS precision (and I'm not talking about fix time, which is also horrible on the Samsung). I'm glad I'm not using it for navigation.
- Stereo FM. Come on Samsung, this is 2010. I'm not using it, but why include it half heartedly?
What Samsung found more fun to do instead:
- Selection of three custom fonts, of which two are too ugly to use. Seriously?
- Widget that shows how many applications are running. Who cares about that, isn't Android supposed to end all this focusing on what is running and what is not ....
- Four different phones released that are basically the same. "The GPS isn't working. Should we fix it? Nah, lets make a phone version with four software buttons instead."
I'm about to give up on this thing. I upgraded my HTC Magic to CM6 the other day, and it seems to be running circles around my Galaxy S.
My only problem if I'm giving up on this phone, is what to get instead. Maybe the HTC Desire HD, but again it's basically the same as my Nexus One with just a bigger screen.

samsung galaxy S pros and cons?

im a current x10i owner and being abit disapointed with the phone overall im looking to exchange( i have a shop near me tht will do a str8 swap) and im just wondering what disadvantages the sgs as got.hows the 2.3 roms..stable? and also is there any miui compatibility, iv looked up abit and can see the screen is clearly better on tht sgs the only thing that seems to be worst is the camera which is 5mp but i can live with that, any help would be appreciated, cheers in advance

Just aggreed.
As far as I know, MIUI is very experimental for now, but CM7 works fine (note that it is not released yet and yes, there are bugs!).
You may also consider using custom ROM's based on stock, like:

I think miui is stable enough for me as daliy use

I see only 2 cons for the Galaxy S :
1/ If you have little hands ... the Galaxy S is quite big
2/ No flash for the camera
All the rest is perfect for me, and as mentioned above, many custom ROMs exist for this phone, especially MIUI
-no flash for the camare (its not ipmoprtant to me but most people like taking pictures)
-it has less user available ram (329 Mb) compared to its brothers like galaxy tab
+after gps fix, it never lost me or never led me to a wrong target..
+even with that little amount of ram (which i complain obssesively about at every chance recently) it is one of the fastest devices..
For me, 720p recording is still far from 30fps,and looks more like 25. A couple days ago I was trying Sony Arc with SGS 2 and still same problem.Sony was smoother in 720p recording than even Sgs2. But I cant find anything bout this here so i ques its just my imagination

This phone is approximately one year old now (so it isn't a new phone). It has a camera, but no flash. The GPS seems to be judged using GPS status or by how fast it locks, not by how well it actually performs. In regards to the quality of GPS there is so much debate over the quality of the GPS, that you should assume the GPS is broken (and honestly, many who claim it does work refuse to provide tracks). Recently, OTA updates seem to have been introduced, but I haven't actually heard of any being provided.
That being said, the plastic finish is UNDERRATED! I haven't heard of anyone's plastic backing break. And the Gorilla glass is a nice touch.
At this time, I wouldn't bother with the SGS though. For those who want a Android phone for productivity, the HTC's are probably a more "polished" experience (the Desire HD at least was). For gaming/multimedia, you'd want a dual core phone, or to just get a tablet. A lot of us are only happy with the SGS because we paid money for it..
....and then we hacked and tuned the heck out of them til they fly!
Insanity cm 014/glitch
After first owning a htc hero then a desire HD I do find that the SGS is a very capable device and i won't be looking for a new one for some time if my sgs carries on performing the way it does now ill have no need plus its taken a good few knocks and bumps I even managed to drop it in a pint of beer down said pint save my phone and carry on the conversation I was having

Hi notmevlak!
Yes i totally agree, the Galaxy S is still a very attractive phone and is imo still better than most budget phones in the same price range. I have been running many different roms i all generations (gb, ics and currently jb) and I have to say that JB is amazing on the galaxy S. Iam currently running a stock rom ported from the Galaxy nexus with a galaxy s3 theme (Launcher and everything) and It's silky smooth! Almost no lags at all if youre thinking about the UI.
You can find that rom on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1902777
The best way to find a rom that suits your needs is to try them all. I see myself as a real flasholic hehe, it's like youre getting a new phone each time
Good luck! And if youre wondering about anything else, feel free to ask!

In short, no. There is not a single rom out there that won't lag at all. Apps are getting more and more cpu intensive as hardware specs improve. Even low grade androids now have duo core cpus.

I thought 1ghz single core is enough, i don't really play any games or use any hardcore intensive apps. Thats why I wanna cheap phone, but I hate ICS/GB androids lagging. Is rly every jb rom lagging? I think I should go for some cheap wp7.5 phone then
What does lag mean to you?

I guess part of the answer is related to how you define 'lag'...
I have been running CM10 for about a month or so and been really impressed with how fast my GalaxyS runs on Jelly Bean. I haven't tried some of the other roms because CM10 does everything I need really well. I am coming from the earlier GB 2.3.3 version and for me, JB is way faster on this phone. From my experience, similar to many other posts I have read, installing JB was like getting a new phone.
In reality, some apps take a a few seconds to load and you can tell when a given app is taxing the system but to me this is acceptable knowing we only have a single core processor and 512 Mb. I can listen to any song, watch any youtube video and play most games and apps I have tried. It's not perfection and certainly a dual core or quad core rig with 2 gig of memory would be better but you won't get anything like that for $100 or less.
I would never consider a win phone simply because it would be pretty much a dead end for apps...while this phone can still run any app I have tried short of the super intensive games that need a tegra or something...
Will I get a new phone when my contract is up? Sure, if its free. Will this phone do me for another year until then? I'm pretty sure it will...
FYI: CM10 just updated to JB 4.1.2 last night...only a day after it was released for the Nexus 7.
My 2 cents...
Try codename-3.6.5 finally

atm i have the galaxy s, had it since it came out and haven't upgraded since (either didn't feel the need to or too financially challenged lol).
Anyhow, I was on GB roms for ages but changed to JB ones (skipped ICS altogether), and i gotta say the SGS does a fine job running JB. If you're worried about lag and battery problems, I can safely say that the phone handle JB beautifully. You'll probably need to charge the phone at the end of every day but there's not worries about lag or any other issues. Battery drain was my main concerning but I've figured out that you can get the phone lasting off one charge if you turn off wifi and 3G when you aren't using the internet. You won't be able to play games on it for hours but i barely use the phone for games since im bored of them all.

The new 9305 is hitting the market here in germany ... and what i can see kernel and drivers are not 100 % compatible to the good old 9300 ...
so, i am a really flashaholic ... but on the other side LTE and the main thing 2 GB RAM sounds really great.
What would you buy if you have the joice ?
Will custom roms in future have booth drivers and so we can merge the development, or is this technical impossible?
I don't want to buy a new monster and stay on good old samsung release versions without (daily new) custom roms.
Help ! 8)
Then dont buy it!! Dont create useless threads containing useless information and me personally, i couldnt give a monkeys toot about 2gigs of ram and lte....the 2gigs of ram isnt going to make my phone faster or smoother, its just going to offer better multi-tasking and tbh i struggle to use 1gig of ram and lte doesnt interest me because its just an excuse to use your data allowence quicker through bragging about it to your friends etc....im happy with what ive got, their are worst phones on the market.

If the thread is useless (Question in Question Forum is useless ?... not for me - i'm asking the question) - why do you answer ...8)
any way - thanks for the impulsive answer ...
2 GB Ram will do it's work - i'm a heavy user mit 300 Appz installed ... so i don't think it's useless ...
Thanks for your very personal view ... 8)

Oh .come on ... i never wrote i don't want to buy it ... i asked
1. will 9300 and 9305 ever be kind of "compatible" focus on custom roms ?
2. what would the people do now the LTE and 2 GB version is out ?
No topic about " i don't want to buy it - but ..."
so - now bakc to topic ... 8)
Get the 2gb one, it helps a lot unless you are a total newbie =/
This is what you said.... I don't want to buy a new monster and stay on good old samsung release versions without (daily new) custom roms.

Are you on drugs?? Bottom line is....if you want it, go buy it, if not dont. Ive told you 2gb ram and lte doesnt do it for me thats my opinion.

I think what he's trying to say is that it all depends on you
2GB RAM and LTE does sound fantastic but do we REALLY NEED it? I,myself, ha been tempted to buy the LTE version, but since I have ORD, it's taking a holdback.... so i'm personally sticking with my i9300
Cheers!
I have purchsed an LTE variant of the phone. I have been specifically holding off for it.
The ROMs are not compatable but there are devs working on release new roms. The device is fairly new so we gotta wait for the dev to get their hands on it.
The 2GB of ram will make a difference to you, especially if u have 300 apps and I am sure some of them are backgrounders.
My advice: If you have the 9300, stick with it, its powerful. If not and you are tossing between 9300 and 9305, go with the 9305.

u sound like u just got b*tch slapped a couple of times before posting this!
anyways, my opinion, go for the 9305. Im pretty much in the same situation, but holding off for the 9305. The devs will get their hands on it sooner or later and im sure there'll be a ton of mods soon enough. end of the day, its more advanced.. 2gb ram, lte... might as well, i say...! g'luck!

One Year Old, and better than New

Got my Exhibit 4G back when it was called something else at WalMart. Ran it the first two months on T-mobile with the stock rom and it was "eh", but the monthly cost was cheap and as long as I stuck to mainly text messages the phone was passable.
Now a year later I am on CM10 - which means the almost latest ROM on a phone that cost under $200. It runs faster and lasts longer on a charge than when I first got it - though partly that's because I now cheat and turn off the 3G/4G radio to use it only via WiFi. Still with Skype service I've had folks ask if I was borrowing my daughter's iPhone or my wife's Nokia - sound is pretty darn good.
So if you're looking for a good budget phone with a very active user community, you've found the right place!
I got mine about eight months ago on Family Mobile (I work at Walmart so I pay 30 bucks for unlimited everything) performance was good compared to my previous phone but not flyin. Now its basically a galaxy s2 with a smaller screen maybe even quicker

No matter what I run out of ram....
I really want to like this phone but even with clean install n setup after an hr or two it makes evo shift 4g seem high end...
I know this is a budget device but we shld get similar results to other budget devices
I have a class 10 sandisk 16gb to use for swap but if anything it seems swap hurts the device
Any help or input tia
I am running camcory's slim bean rom with smartguy's 1.4 kernel oc'd to 1.6, 368 min, with smartassv2 governor. It runs super smooth and I have no complaints. Battery life is nice too and it seems really stable. I highly recommend you try slim bean rom and smartguy's kernel. Makes this phone a pleasure to use.
After a 100+ flashes this phone still works as good as the day i got it. An the color still looks good too unlike my other phones where it gets wore off on the corners. It has some minor scratches but dont use a case or screen protector. It has been by far the best phone i have ever owned. Most fun too thanks in large part to the devs.

Despite the ghosting thing that happens, the screen on the Galaxy Exhibit is really quite nice. I'm always impressed, and even a couple co-workers with an S3 and Note II have commented on how vibrant and crisp/clear the screen is.
This is only my 2nd Android. My first was the Optimus V and I cut my romming/rooting teeth on that thing. I haven't hit 100 flashes quite yet on the Exhibit, but I'm getting close!
The biggest thing that made the Optimus V such a fantastic little phone was the development community. When I bought the Galaxy Exhibit, I wasn't yet aware how great the development community was becoming. I had no idea I'd be running a smooth-ass port of Jellybean so soon. I have the same feeling about the Exhibit as I did for the Optimus V.
It's nice when a boom in development affords you the opportunity to feel like you have a new phone (sometimes many times over), when in fact it's the same piece of hardware you've had tucked away in your pocket for months, or even more a year in some people's case.

Since running SlimBean, I no longer overclock. I have the regular Camcory CM10 kernel that comes with it. It's very fast, and I always have more than 100MB of free RAM (this will of course vary on your personal apps).
But it's really so quick and smooth at stock speed, I feel no need to mess with overclocking. I've tried the OC'd kernel with CM10. On CM10, it made a big difference in eliminating a lot of the lag. On SlimBean, I don't really feel or see a difference. Honestly. I realized the slickness I was experiencing with SlimBean and the OC kernel was placebo, when I reflashed SlimBean without the OC kernel and it was just as quick and slick.
there is no placebo effect when you flash my kernel haha just playing but slim is fast with an oc kernel

Sorry man! Should have worded that one better. Don't want anyone to think your kernel doesn't do anything. lol. Cause it certainly does. When I was running CM10, along with a lot more apps, Speedy Gonzalez certainly made a significant difference. Since I've been running Slimbean, I've purposely kept things slim across the board. Minimal apps, and using stock stuff that I used to replace (keyboard, browser, etc).
When you keep it slim, Slimbean flies with it's stock kernel. So for ME, it was placebo, but only in that slimmed down Slimbean configuration. I'm started to add a few more apps now and I'm already feeling the sluggishness creep in, and I'm almost ready to flash Speedy Gonzalez again!
haha its cool man i didnt take it wrong i was just messing with you....you are right tho with some roms its not needed but its great to have....slim is well slim so its blazing fast any way same with the rom im working on its fast to out of the box
This topic is nice, but I have no clue what some of these stuff mean.
Only thing I even considered doing was to root the stock rom, then flash it to peach sunshine via cwm 6.x
Does this topic mean that doing above will not help much and it will still be laggy? What are some of the things you guys mentioned like overclocked kernel (can it run with any rom, how can I install one? Or can I install one on top of stock rooter rom?)
Like "Smartguy's 1.4 Kernel", "Overclocked to 1.6" "368 Min", "Smartassv2 Governor"
Is it that SG's 1.4 kernel allows overclocking or can you overclock stock kernel?
What is the stock processor setting does it actually go below 368? And of course what is Smartassv2 Governer?
Sorry if I asked too many questions, but I just got this phone for my wife and even though she doesn't seem to complain, I can see that the phone gets laggy once you have two or three apps running (and I try to have her keep Skype or IM+ running all the time so we can chat, we don't have texting plan)
Any input/guidance will be very appreciated.
Thanks guys.
The sg kernel is for cm9 cm10 slimbean and so on. As basic rule has to be CM9/CM10 based rom. If using a stock based rom such as peach you won't be able to overclock. Icecream and jellybean Roms are all pretty decent with multi tasking and don't really need overclocking. Smoothass is the governed to use as smartass v2 has been k own to cause probs

I am running MIUI ICS with Doadin's Custom 2.6.35 Kernel and it flies! (as much as a device with 384MB of ram can fly) buttery transitions, sleek sexy interface, definitely a must-try for our device.
