Love it! I just wish we had LTE in my area :-(

I have a feeling they're going to screw some people over with this, myself included. Before I switched to the TB I paid for hotspot on my DX. Now that I'm on the TB it no longer shows up in my features, and I bet they will switch to tiered data before the 15th. Forcing me to change my plan to re-add tethering and go to tiered data. Pretty much defeating the whole purpose of why I bit the bullet and threw down $700 to get this phone and be on unlimited 4G before they did away with it.

It's a free promotion and it says it when you use the hotspot. They can't charge you or sign you up for something during a free promotion. When I spoke to Verizon they said it will be some kind of notification (they don't know what yet) sent out that the promotion is over. I tried to opt out before the end of the promotion and both reps couldn't find a way because they didn't have anything to opt me out except a note on my account.

Ummm instead of falling for their plan and adding tethering and getting tiered data.... Root the phone and wait for someone to crack the app so it doesn't "talk" to Verizon

it's the people doing this that are the reason this tiered data crap is happening in the first place. I pay for things I use, especially with all the attention illegal tethering is getting now.

So if I was already signed up for tethering on my account before switching to the tb, it should automatically go back on it once the promotion is over without having to change my plan?

Whatever you had on your plan should carry over, Tethering and all.

If we were to add the tethering on to your account you will c the charge....it will not show the soc for tethering until after the promotion is over next month. So you are correct by saying the tethering did not roll over because as far as your billing is concerned it did not roll over because it's a different soc than ur 3g hotspots....if u choose to keep or "add" tethering it will not effect your unlimited data so no worries

ah ok. Couldn't help but be paranoid about it, after what AT&T did when they went tiered last year, although they didn't offer tethering before then for the iPhone, but if you wanted tethering when they added it you had to give up unlimited data.

I always felt it was more people like you as too why people like us have to find a way to get our phones tethering the way we want it and deserve it: FREE.
The majority allow Big Red and AT&T to tell us this is how it will be pay it or don't have it. And people complain about it but still shell out the money to these companies. If more people stood together we'd get things change. Lest that's how it used to be. Now most are too busy bending over to the companies to stand up to them.

WRONG do you remember when Verizon rolled out 3g data service back in the day and it was tiered at first as well? It was long before there were apps for tethering and before a majority of people even knew what tethering was. It's their way of making more money.

Eh you are stretching it there...yeah they had "tiers" but there was always an unlimited data option and lower options, like there are now. With the new tiered plans there won't be an unlimited data anymore...it will be how ATT is currently charging for their data.

[Q] Is Wifi Tether illegal without a plan?

What I mean Is., I use a Tether app often on my capty.
I still have the old unlimited data plan. but no tether plan....do you think they will catch on if say i were to use my 3g wifi to download movies or whatnot...?
You're definitely not supposed to be doing it, but Ive been doing it for over 3 years now and have seen 100+GB in a month with no problems what so ever. Just don't give up that unlimited plan!
yes the unlimited plan is a must have.!!!! i have had it for 5 years now
This is an interesting question... I wonder if the recent update to the DMCA that allows for jailbreaking would have any affect on whether or not you'd be allowed to tether with out a tether plan.
I think they get away with a lot more "illegal" pratices than you doing tether so to me, you are just fine.
"illegal"
NO
"Outside of your contract terms"
YES
Which means they can drop you at their discretion. I have heard of excessive users getting notices. I see someone claims 100gb a month. That sounds like flags to me, but if you can make it work, then more power to you.
yeah just imagine if they dumbed your unlimited data plan and left you with the option to get the 250 MB plan only.
that would suck.
AT&T's "Unlimited" Plan has what they call a 5GB "Soft Cap". If you use over 5GB in any given month, AT&T flags your account for review. If this happens many times over, your account will be flagged for no further upgrade eligibility. At that point and time, they have the option to drop you completely. They also reserve the right to drop you to a limited plan and charge you overages (currently $10-$15 per GB). Tread lightly. 100+GB will possibly come back to bite you. 5-10GB will probably not cause much of a problem...they are looking for people that use their bandwidth to serve their entire house, not occasional "tetherers".
Apparently unlimited has a different definition in their dictionary....

Sure does!!!
Definitely be careful with that unlimited plan. Twice now at&t has removed my unlimited data plan without giving me any notice what so ever. When i called them they always gave me the excuse that it was changed many months ago and i had to wait 2 weeks for my case to go through.

waiving data charges

ATT sent me a text last night saying I have gone over $200 worth of data charges and my data line is being disabled. Called them today to find out My captivate does NOT have a data plan and instead I have pay per use? (I did not knnow this was possible with smartphones anymore) Anyway I asked to have the charges waived since this was my first time with such a high bill and told them I was having issues with my phone. The rep told me all she can do at this moment is give me a $25 credit towards it, mainly because she can't do anything until its officially on the next bill.
Anyways 3 questions:
1. Has anyone had experience with AT&T being nice and waiving this first time offenses?
2. How the hell do I NOT have a dataplan? I thought at&t was on point with adding data plans to smart phones.
3. Is there a better app for limiting all data except mms? I've been using the free apndroid and it seems buggy on my phone and I never know if its truely limiting data or not.
Thanks in advance
When I first bought my Cappy from best buy they made me set up my data plan right then and there.
They definitely can. When I bought the captivate I had very similar thing happen to me and they fully reversed the charges. It took a couple calls and repeatedly asking for a manager and/or somebody in the complaints department, but I did get my money back.

They did that to me aswell and also at bestbuy. BUT I used another lines upgrade on our plan to get this phone. So I assumed it would switch to mine when we swapped sims.
No thats absolute garbage, I used to work as an inbound ATT Customer Service Rep, first of all, they can give you up to a $250 credit without asking anybody, I used to do it routinely for people, especially when something like this happened and they wanted to add the plan, I'd wipe the charges, and set em up on the unlimited.
I'd call back or go back in and raise hell, say that it's their fault if they didn't provision you with a plan, it says right in the contract you need to have one. Don't worry, they'll take it off, as far as limiting data, I'm not entirely sure, I don't worry about it op much since I still have my unlimited plan. Good luck tho!

Yes. They do! Not just these, they even waive accidental charges based on ur history with them. Just be polite and nice with them, and they would do it. It all depends on how u talk to them.
Thank you all for the posts, made me breathe a sigh of relief. Should I still wait until the bill becomes official? Or keep raising hell with them now?

No bother too much. Call up customer care, and tell them to convert ur "pay per use" into a $15 or a $25 plan, and to back date it from the start of ur current billing cycle. this will eliminate surprises when bill comes.
Edit: I did it just in last month's billing cycle. I had the 200 MB plan. But I used like 250 within the first 2 weeks. So I went online, and changed my plan to 2 GB plan and back dated it. All I got this month was a $10 extra, but that's expected since they would charge $25 for this month too, and not $15.

I'd like to keep the payper use and just make sure my phone never ever accesses data (besides mms). I'm surrounded by wifi practically everywhere I am and I see no point in me paying for data.

No worries. Tell them to back-date ur data plan. And when ur next month billing starts, convert that back into a pay per use.
You could consider keeping ur data turned off to avoid these "accidental" usages in future. AT&T might not listen to these requests if repeated.

Just be nice and explain that you were never told by a rep when signing up about data and you assumed data would automatically be turned off.
I'd advise on getting the $25 Data plan.
When I first added texting, the person screwed it up and didn't actually add unlimited texting.
Two days later I got a text saying that I had $50 worth of texting fees.
They took care of it, but I think that we ended up paying a $200+ bill and then a sub $100 bill to offset it.
^Good luck with that. They are now requiring ALL smartphone users to have at least the minimum data plan.
I had this happen when I gave my brother an old MyTouch. It was only a $60 charge but I simply called them and told them we didn't realize it was transmitting data (he wasn't using any of the data, it was just background stuff) The rep told me they could reverse the charges and add a retroactive data plan to the beginning of the billing cycle. Brought the $60 charge down to only $15. Simple phone call, just be nice, no reason to cause any trouble with them. Good luck!

be nice to them, that's the key. the will reverse the charges. but i don't think they would let u use pay per use. since u have a smartphone u would need to have a min. $15 data plan.
I work for at&t and its common practice to reverse these charges by re-rating the plan. However if youre asking for a credit and not adding a data plan it will be a lot more difficult. In addition data is mandatory on PDAs and you'll have to fight that battle also.
Ps. Like everyone else already said. Be nice!

Phone trading question

I bought my cappy from Amazon for a Penny with the stipulation that I keep it on my account for 180 days. My question is, if I were to trade it, how whould they find out? My brother wants to try out my phone for a couple of weeks and I'd be using his iPhone 3Gs
i do not see any problems here.

Neither do I but Amazon stated they can slap me with a $250 fee if I don't keep the phone for 180 days so I didn't want to do it.
They won't know if your just swap your SIM out into a new phone. But.. I dunno if it would work due to Apple just being different
The iphone data plan is a different data plan. When I switched from my iphone to the captivate, my data plan didn't work until I called att to get my data plan fixed.

Wow, iCrap is really wrapping things tight. I switched from my blackberry to the captivate and nothing had to change. In fact I still have the BB Personal Unlimited w/texting on my plan today and have even made changes (like killing visual voice mail) and have not had issues or questions. (and yes my account now shows the captivate, they picked it up after the first day of use and changed the phone listed on my account) I'm not saying the iPhone isn't diff, it just kills me that they have to be such pricks about their crap.

Wifi Tethering (T-Mobile)

I know most of us have rooted roms and tethering is not a problem but just in case you dont want to circumvent the system T-Mobile now has free tethering with unlimited data plans. At least thats what they told me yesterday and added to my regular No-Contract acct. Call them up and check it out or sign up online and see. I was told its a feature that was just added on for them this month. My boy added it to his Iphone so I know it does work...
Hope it helps someone.... If this is old info my bad:good:

Not sure how else to say this but here we go. Yesterday while in the T- Mobile store the rep I formed me of a recent change. Anyone with unlimited internet can now get tethering for free.... Unlimited tethering and not the first 509 as stated on the web by T-Mobile. I am not a rookie and was simply passing this on .Now if you have asked a rep today and they told you different then fine. But if your statements are based on anything prior to today ease refrain til you ask. Now I am simply posting as said prior as an FYI.... There IS a recent change in the fine print language that indeed allows 500MB of tethering on 'Unlimited' data accounts, and I believe this is what the rep was referring to, whether intentional or not. It likely will never be 'unlimited tether' due to the fact of network restraints, and they have repeatedly indicated they do NOT want to be anyone's ISP for home-based bandwidth. Widespread 'unlimited tether' would bring this network to its knees in mere days. Please consider that this rep wasn't completely knowledgeable/forthcoming.

Welp, I did some quick google-digging, and DID come up with an interesting change in terms on all plans BUT the Unlimited Nationwide 4G, which still maintains the 500MB limit:
http://deals.t-mobile.com/unlimited-4g-data-no-contract
This page indicates all other 'Unlimited' data plans (no UN4G) can tether to their full rate...and fall back to 2G when the bucket empties. I'm happy to be wrong, playya! LOL!
EDIT:
Aw man: again misleading..the fine print:
"Smartphone Mobile Hotspot: (Tethering/Wi-Fi Sharing): Qualifying plan required. Plan data allotment applies.; Unlimited 4G data plan includes 500 MB of tethering. No roaming. Use of connected devices subject to T-Mobile Terms and Conditions."
This statement can be read several ways, naturally...TMO really needs to step up and simplify this silly language.

Gotcha...correct info is more important than right/wrong. I just recall several months back a thread where users were bemoaning paying for Unlimited Nationwide 4G and not getting ANY tethering...even when they wished to pay extra for it...it simply wasn't offered (assumed too abusive to the network). Even I was shocked they changed and allowed 500MB on that UN4G plan. Cheers!
I have the $30 pre paid 5 gig plan and you can add tethering for $15 a month. I have used it though with apps just during power outages. I never had an issue but I don't come close to using the 5 gigs anyways.

I just added it to my plan. I chatted with them first to confirm that it could later be canceled without affecting the basic plan. They prorated the first monthly fee because I'm already in middle of the billing period.
It annoys me that they make it so hard to find exact terms and conditions. At the moment, the blurb on the signup page doesn't say anything about limiting the high speeds to the first 500 MB, just says "Plan data allotment applies." The allotment is first 5 GB at up to 4G speed; time will tell if I get that with other connected devices.
How would they even know (sorry if that's an ignorant question)? Truth be told, I've been tethering all afternoon since my DSL went down. I decided to make it "official" when I found out it could take a couple of days to get my regular DSL back up again, but I didn't have any problems throughout the afternoon tethering a laptop and a tablet. Other than suddenly seeing a surge of use, how would they know I have tethered devices?

They randomly check user agent strings. I started getting the warning texts a few months ago (was on value unlimited which doesn't have a tethering allotment) and then they blocked me from accessing Internet Explorer from my laptop via mobile hotspot (but could still use Chrome or my iPad). One phone called they switched me to Simple Choice and kept my contract term so I didn't have to pay a migration fee.

I just switched to unlimited 4g a few weeks ago and I've occasionally gotten rerouted to a page that says I don't have tethering or I've reached my data limit. Disabling tethering and reloading the page works to bypass the page I'm using native android tether, and that's the only problem I've seen so far.

Time to ditch your Framily!

Sprints shared data plans are out!

Meh
Looks good if you have a lot of people on your plan, but I'm still sticking to unlimited

Ditto!!!.... Wish they still had the good ol SERO plans... Hated getting booted off that .
I had to ditch unlimited because with NV, my coverage where I work and live got worse. Didn't feel like paying for it anymore

Did they get rid of SERO completely?

To be fair...data is pretty crappy atm where I live. I have unlimited but can barely use it. WiFi is my hero... Lol
Yeah....I got 10 people on my Framily. I'm not leaving it for this. Furthermore, this seems like more trouble to find more people.
Besides, I used 50GB+ last month alone...where am I going to find that many people?
And just an FYI, I was finding things to download to test the data speeds at our new place. Don't get any other ideas.

No. I still have sero 500. It is only 500 landline minutes, not unlimited.
Sent from my lair.
I remember an old thread on XDA where some guys were talking about Sprint will have to get rid of unlimited data some day. They were right because is happening now.

Everything was fine until they got the iPhone and started NV. 3G data became a joke

You ain't lying... Lol
Will they force people off the Framily Plan? From the looks of the new plan, there will be only one bill like the other carriers.

I wouldn't think so... But once you upgrade you may have to change plan. Not sure yet. Sprint's going through plans so fast now-a-days I can't keep up!

I have a good deal so far at $25 per month.
It seems like a good plan, although after 2015 you will need to pay $15 per line. The price could skyrocket pretty quick.

It would also seem like you would have to know the people if I understand it correctly because it'll be one bill.
I'm still on an older Everything Data 1500 family plan with 27% discount with three lines

I'm still on the Everything Data 1500 family plan as well. They let you stay on it if you buy your phones off of sprint.com rather than in a store.
I pay $300 a month for 5 phones on the 1500min family unlimited data plan w/ Sprint insurance on 4 phones, extra 200min on one line, 27% discount, free mobile to any mobile and my brother pays me $120 for two phones, should I just stick to the plan I have?
