Flash to 2.3.3 or use custom rom? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know there are probably loads of threads about this, but my questions are a little specific and I was hoping to get some direct answers.
If there are other threads then feel free to post a link to help me find them and I will be happy to read it.
I'm new to rooting/flashing and have a few questions...
I have had my SGS for almost 5 months now, and it's a little laggy.
I've heard about Flashing/Rooting before, but I've never tried it for fear of bricking my phone.
So could anyone please tell me:
1. If I do by any chance brick my phone, is it fixable? (I hear the chances are very low and also I think I read that Flashing can fix it?)
2. Should I flash to 2.3.3 or is a custom rom a better choice? (Performance/battery/everything overall wise)
3. If I flash the phone, will I still need a lagfix or will the rom include a lagfix or is the rom THE lagfix?
and 4. If custom rom is suggested, which rom is best or which are the best choices?
If anyone could shed some light it would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

There are plenty of threads and FAQs on xda answering all your questions. A simple search should bring up plenty. This is a good place to start. But I will give few quick answers.
1. If your phone has download mode working (Vol Down + Home + Pwr) then its very easy to recover from a bad flash. All you have to do is flash again.
2. I’d go with a stock 2.3.3 ROM (like the latest JVO). Some might say custom roms are better since they have more features, But I never felt the need to install one since stock deodexed roms give me all the options I need.
3. IMO newer ROMs (after 2.2.1) don’t really need lag fixing like older ones.

Thank you very much for your reply.
I guess I'll do a search for each of my questions and see if I can get any more answers out of it. 8)
EDIT: Just thought I'd better check that my phone could even go into Download Mode and found out that I can't. )8
Looks like I'll just wait for the 2.3.3 update anyway.

New to Android and just got a Captivate. Can somebody help me w/ software questions?

I am new to Android and just got a Captivate. I understand its pretty glitchy with the Samsung software and am wondering about a couple of things:
1. I hear a lot about rooting. What does this actually do for me? Is this loading a new Rom? Or are those two seperate things?
2. Which is the best software Rom to load on it with the best performance and least glitches? Is getting stock 2.2 Froyo on it an option or does it have to have the TouchWiz interface?
3. Whats the easiest way to load it?
4. Can I save the stock Samsung ROM in case I need to return and replace my captivate (warranty)?
This will definitely get me started in the right direction. Thank you!

1. Rooting gives you superuser permissions. Read about it on this site.
2. Since you obviously didnt read the site I'd suggest loading Cognition. Beyond that I'd suggest any of the roms you can read about on the site.
3. If you go to cognition you can read about how to install with odin from his ponack website. Just click the link to download and Read his site.
4. If you get rooted and install clockworkmod's rom manager from the android marketplace I think you can do a nandroid backup as well as a rom backup. I am sure there is a thread in general about how to do that. Just go read it.
Will the cognition rom root my phone as well or is that a seperate thing I need to do? Should I first Root , do the Titanium Backup and then mess with the rom?
Also, once I have Cognitions rom installed, I wont be able to check for software update on the phone , correct? I will have to download future releases from his site?
Thanks! You are helping a ton. I just want to make sure I go about this right. Maybe I will start with just rooting and not mess with the ROM currently. What is the advantage to a different ROM?
What is the best way to root? Are there different roots or is rooting all the same, just different procedures. I saw this one and it sounded simple: One click Root/Unroot for Captivate
Once rooted and when Samsung releases 2.2 will I be able to download and keep my root or will I have to root again?
Oh, also how do I backup the original rom in case I need to return my captivate?
You can use ODIN one click here on xda to return to stock. First thing you need to do though is search captivate dev section on three button fix. Make sure you are able to get into download mode as this is essential before modding your phone

[Q] New i9000 - various questions

Long time reader, first time poster Receive my i9000 tomorrow. Excited but not interested in a laggy device so want to get customising straight away....
I've read numerous threads regarding rooting, download/recovery mode and custom ROM flashing.
I'm interested in gaining root access and flashing the Darky 7.5 ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814091). There's a couple of things that confuse me that I've tried reading/searching about with no luck. Please no flaming - if I've missed something, please just kindly point me in the right direction
Firstly, the lack of download/recovery mode on some i9000 devices (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814091). Does the lack of ability of this feature mean that I will need to complete the fix detailed on these forums? Or am I just able to initiate the download mode whenever I need it (which should be rarely, I don't plan on obsessively updating ROMS) through cmd and the SDK via my computer? If I don't complete the fix, will the method of accessing download mode via the computer not work?
Secondly, the clockworkmod. Their website is down and says its under construction so I can't find much info about why this is needed and whether it is absolutely required or not. As far as I can tell, its a permanent? temporary? replacement for the stock android download mode. Is this correct? If it is a permanent replacement of the stock android download mode, can it be removed and reverted to the original?
With future updates, (my device is shipping with 2.1), does the download mode get updated/removed, or is it hardware based, thus fixed?
Whats voodoo? Whilst lots of pages talk about this.. I can't pinpoint exactly what it is.... the Darky ROM says its optional to activate it.. but can't actually tell whats being activated or how..
Throughout all these processes, whats reversible and whats not? After installing clockwork, lagifxes, custom ROMS, rooting, partitioning, changing/partitioning away from RFS, will my device ever be able to be reverted to an out-of-the-box state ever again?
Lastly, honest opinion - the i9000's here in Australia are shipping with 2.1. Should I just root and apply the lagifx and enjoy as is? Should I just update to 2.2 and leave it there? Or are the improvements that custom ROMS provide, in particular Darky's, worth the mucking around?
Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated... thanks guys ;-)
** added -- and what is JPU, JPO and JPY?? :-S ***
You should really get the 3 button fix working. And pretty much is reversible by flashing a stock rom. I can't answer on the other points.

So flashing a stock i9000 rom resets the partitioning modifications that custom ROMs and lagfixes create?
I think so. But i'm far from 100% sure.

1. Check your unit if download mode (vol down+home+power) and recovery (vol up+home+power) is working.
If not, get it by searching here in XDA.
2. Clockwork is a (better) form of recovery mode. Plus you can activate lag fixes there.
Nandroid back up is a plus.
3. Darkyy's 7.5 is froyo 2.2.1 so you're up-to-date if you do flash that ROM.
4. Please please please back-up your EFS folder before playing with your device!

Root and stay on stock 2.2.1?

Hello,
I read most of the guide but couldn't find certain answers there nor by search, but apologies if I missed them elsewhere.
1) I'm happy with my SGS, I always used stock ROMs and am now on 2.2.1. I'd like to get root access and leave the rest as it is, however.
Is there any way to get root access with the stock 2.2.1 ROM without switching to a completely different ROM (as said, I like the stock ROM and don't feel like changing the layout, features and all that come with a new ROM)?
I saw that superoneclick thread but apparently it didn't work for everyone and questions are usually not answered there if people run into trouble so I didn't dare that yet.
2) Still a bit confused about the 2 modes. Do I need recovery mode to work? Or will download mode do to flash (if I have to) and rescue/fix my phone if something goes wrong?
My 3 combo button never worked so I bought a JIG dongle on ebay which gets my phone into download mode at least, but I still have no recovery mode yet that's why I'm asking.
Thanks!
There's an app called Quick Boot which will allow you to get into recovery mode but you need to have phone rooted.
Note though that Froyo uses 3e and I've tried to use update zips, wont take without going down to 2e recovery.

Warning etc I take no resposibility if you break something etc
First of all fix your 3 button for recovery, there should be some guides around here.
1. Try that superoneclick you posted the link to. If it wont work it wont work... But it will.
2. Recovery you need only if you want to tinker with the rom a little more and to do nice stuffs like backup. Or for a recovery
Oh and I am on stock rom + custom kernel + another modem and happy with it.
First I was rooted and the rest was as it is and I rooted with the super one click root . Dont forget USB debugging on. Once you root though I think wont be long till you start customizing a little . Good start is a nice good custom kernel
If you want to stick with stock you could try these stock roms which come pre-rooted, zip-aligned and deodexed (making them smoother and allowing the application of themes).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=948790
To fix the three button combo have a read of this thread. The OP of this one is really helpful if you're not sure what to do. I had to do this and it was the most nerve racking thing i've done to my phone as if this screws up you'll be sending it for repair.

Thanks a lot to all of you for your answers!
Had my first successful flash today (3 button combo mode) and will now take a more in depth look at rooting etc.
So far, I feel more comfortable to try a rooted stock kernel maybe instead of superoneclick.
However, if I had to unroot for any reason, how can I do that if I flashed the kernel?
The way I understood about ROMs and Kernels is that ROMs already contain kernels. So flashing a stock ROM would get me back to a stock kernel and the phone would be unrooted again?
you can also just flash a kernel and root such as cfroot or speedmod..

To un-root you can just flash a stock ROM (look in the general section to find them).
If you like stock ROMS then like the person above stated you can just flash a pure stock ROM then flash a new kernel (i.e. speedmod, voodoo etc.).
Good to hear the 3-button flash worked for you, now it is very difficult to brick your phone as you should always have the 3-button download mode which enables flashing with Odin.
Just be careful when picking a stock ROM, especially if its new, to check if it includes a new bootloader!!
Thanks all again!
and good on you for being sensible enough to get a jig.....best fiver I spent in ages. Every time I flashed back to an early stock it trashed my bootloader.
no worries about flashing now

Mate if you just want a simple to apply root access I would just use Z4root... its not used so much anymore but it works well and can be installed by just installing the app(can't be obtained from android market, internet only)..
Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953
otherwise you can just use Odin to flash CF-Root ( I do this all the time on stock firmware and works perfectly every time).

I used z4root on 2.2 but afaik z4root no longer works with 2.2.1.
I did flash the CF Kernel now and quite happy with it so far.
By the way, is it a bad idea trying to flash with Odin if the phone is connected via a USB hub instead of connecting it to the direct usb port? Each flashing failed on the 1st attempt (worked on the 2nd), no matter what I flashed so far. Some searching here indicates a hub is not recommended.
If that's the case, why is that not mentioned in all those read-me-first guides (or maybe I missed it somewhere)? Not every first-flash user will have a JIG at hand.
You're right you should have the USB cable plugged into a USB port on the motherboard (not a port in your pc case or a hub) for the least chance of flash failure.
Not sure why though tbh, I think it may have something to do with the Samsung USB drivers that get installed with Kies being a bit flaky.

[Q] Complete Newbie ICS Help! :)

Hi guys,
Basically I would like to install the ICS rom on my Galaxy S i9000 but have absolutely no knowledge of how to do so having never installed a custom rom before. Looking at the 'tutorial' for installing ICS leaves me just as clueless as it seems the individual steps require a decent knowledge of knowing what you are doing!
Also, I have discovered from attempts in the past that my Galaxy is one of those that is unable to go into download mode so that is another thing that I need help with (the link to the thread for the solution to this problem in the Galaxy FAQ is dead).
So yeah, any help much appreciated or even a point in the direction of the most thorough guide there is.
Cheeers.
Well, before you do anything you need to enable download mode. Think it's a case of enabling USB debugging and then adb, although I never had to do it.
Secondly you should probably stick a stock gingerbread rom on with odin.
Flash a kernel with odin.
Flash ICS
Flash ICS again.
Going straight to ICS with very little experience of custom ROMs may be a bit difficult especially given it's alpha status.
my phone also had the lock on the Download mode, seem like some service provides disable the feature to "try and prevent" people to flash custom roms as this voids warranty in South Africa. I found a fix on Google but cant remember where.. so if you dont get it right... some guys made a homemade jig here is a link on how to make it...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819551
and when flashing a custom rom its best to follow the roms tutorial and usually there are post regard similar issues that could be encounter in the process. so the search function ends up helping alot instead of having to read thru 100 pages lol
its all new to us in the beginning then it just becomes second nature lol
i recon this is a nice tutorial to use
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/android-4-0-update-for-galaxy-s-i9000-custom-rom/
even has a method to return to stock

Josh. This is NOT a rom which you should pop your cherry on. It is buggy, not very fast and you need a good working knowledge of how to recover a soft bricked phone. If you cannot get into download mode, you would be foolish to flash ANY rom. There is a fix, search xda.
I admire the size of your swingers, but would recommend you gain a little more flashing experience.
However, good luck if you do decide to flash - there's plenty of help here if all goes wrong.
i "popped my custom rom cherry" on ICS build 12 i screwed it up when trying to go for build 13 but i found this tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14273101&postcount=1
i installed the latest gingerbread kernel then the rom files and it was fine ater that and im just about to put build 14 on now so dont worry to much about it. Ive never got my phone to a state where i cant fix it, so if me a supernoob can recover a brick just about anyone could

[Q] How flash a new rom most secure way?

Hey guys!
I'm a quite cautious person when it comes to my personal belongings and especially when something happens to my dear Galaxy S. But I'm so tired of the lag and the annoying force-closes that I just want to mash the crap out of it.
Since I got 8 months left of my cellphone plan I can't/I don't want to buy a new phone, but i'd like my phone to act as a new one so I thought "why not flash a new rom" but the problem is that I dont find a good tutorial to do so. And also I am afraid of "bricking" it.
The only thing I've done is to root it using the Gingerbreak app, otherwise everything is stock.
Can someone please explain in a "newb-friendly" way how to flash a new rom, most preferably one of the "stock" ICS-roms. Step by step and with all the links needed.
Noteworthy:
Baseband version: I9000XXJVK
Firmware version: 2.3.3
Build number: GINGERBREAD.XWJVB
Kernel version: [email protected] #2
Please help a newbie in need!
dude you need to folow a certain rom quide. there is no one general quide for all roms. Some of them require different actions, and some are so simple to apply that you only have to choose a zip file and wait
and don't be affraid of bricking your device. I got BSOD (black screen of death) twice but connecting to PC and flashing via ODIN solved my problem and my phone works like a charm
cheers
v
don't worry dude. they got all the guide for you to flash to their rom. Most important is you must backup all your thing before flashing rom. The process is pretty easy...wish you good luck.
My opinion is: There is no 100% safe method, but I have flashed rom many times and I had only one problem when I was trying flash new ICS custom rom using CWM, but I think I made a biggest misteake - uncharged battery.. I guess.
I'm not an expert, but from my point of view flashing wiith odin it's more safe.
