I can honestly say, I don't regret buying the Nook. For me, the Nook has been one of the first devices that I've owned in the last 10 years that just gave me this feeling of... Wow.
My first modified device was an original PSX and back then... That was a big deal, one of the first systems to ever run emulators and play videos. I felt like I was getting so much bang for my buck back then. (Not including my "Backups"... Which made it safe to protect my games )
However, now that I feel like the Nook is just such a wonderful value, I find it really hard to rationalize other purchases because of it.
I don't own a Android phone, in fact I own a wannabe smartphone called the Samsung Rogue. Was pretty excited about getting one, as I was going to get a Droid X for HDMI output (Verizon). But, now Verizon is planning on limiting data and it kind of makes the Android just look far less attractive when I already carry the Nook Color around.
Then there's the prospect of other tablets and again, I'm swayed by the thought of HDMI output and Dual Core processors. But there's very few things my Nook Color can't do, and really it just comes down to video output.
So though I love my Nook Color and feel like every new development is a reassurance in my purchase... I feel a little robbed by how awesome it is ;p.
Agreed. I bought mine off of craigslist and really enjoy tweeking it as new work becomes available. I feel so reassured to have all these devs working to put cooler stuff day after day. I really enjoy this new hobby of mine.

Yeah I'm surprisingly enjoying mine too. The wife is happy that I now have netflix working on it too.
I just need to see if I can adjust to using it as a reader instead of a paper book.
I like mine too. I agonized over buying it because I don't even own a cell phone and $250 seemed like a lot of money for an e-reader that I would use to occasionally surf the internet with. But it's been a lot of fun so far. I still don't use it for a fraction of the things it's capable of but it's a great e-reader, is really good for web browsing and I'm pretty much addicted to Angry Birds.
The only bummer for me is that my Nook app stopped syncing with my library for some reason, so now I have to use the Kindle app. But it works.
Nook opened my eyes to andriod. I was a die hard iphonefan. I do wish I owned a real dual core honeycomb tab now though

One extremely good reason to get an android phone: Wifi hotspot. Then you can use your NC anywhere. I have the Fascinate on VZW, unrooted but with the hotspot unlocked (extremely easy to do). And if you sign up on unlimited, they will not convert you to a limited data plan, that's just for new subscribers. I signed up for unlimited data way back when, and when they converted to the 5gb cap, mine was still unlimited and I just do a NE2 and the plan stays exactly the same. I did a NE2 when they had the 5gb limit and I stayed unlimited as it gets grandfathered in.
That being said, I've never hit 5gb anyway...
If it does stay grandfathered-in, then I may very well stay with them. I don't really think I would go over the 5gb cap normally, however... I could very well see myself on a few road trips or vacations where I would use Netflix or one of the other streaming apps =\.
yup same here.... my wife bought me the Nook as a surprise.. she was a little shocked at the price... she has the original Nook, then she saw what I was doing with the flashed Nook... and was like WOW.... this is really good... I said yea.. compared to the cost of other tablets... that is a BIG YUPPERS!!!!

Hey guys, so I'll cut right to the chase. I'm debating on getting the Nook Color or the Notion Ink Adam. I know it's hard to compare the two because of the specs but hear me out. All I really want it for is web browsing, occasional gaming, and flash videos. My laptop of 5 years is crapping out on me. Every now and then it'll overheat and crash right when Im reading some xda or phandroid. But anyways, the nook color IS cheaper and can be overclocked to 1ghz but it's smaller, doesn't have as much RAM and not dual core. But as I said I only really want it for browsing. So would it be good for that? And can it handle flash videos well? Thanks for the help.

Not sure about the specs on the Ink, but right now there really isn't any flash on the Nook.. There is some progress on it, but it requires Froyo of course and that is not ready for prime time yet.
There is much talk about other roms, but doesn't look like that will happen anytime soon.
If the Ink has flash and if that's what you need then your probably better off with something certain.
I bought the Nook with the assumption we would eventually get flash, but I am starting to question if I made the right choice myself. Its an excellent piece of hardware and worth the price, but my fear is it could get abandoned with all the new tablets out...
No flash isn't really a deal breaker for me. If I really needed it I could just use it on my X. I think it will eventually be on the Adam. But the money thing is what's holding me back. 120 bucks is a lot of a difference. I'm just considering trying the nook and if I dont like it ill return it.
Think of it as do you want an ereader that has been hacked to be a tablet or do you want it more of just a tablet (which you can add reader apps to). If you want more of a tablet function go notion ink. If you want more use as just an ereader than a tablet go nook

i bought the nc because i did not want to wait for the Adam. I am very happy with the Nook. It suits my needs for now. one thing i really like about the nook, is the hacking. From what i see the Adam is going to have a pretty well baked interface when you get it. its faster, and offers the pixel qi screen which interests me a lot. the total cost of the device with shipping is a bit of a turn off, but it will have more manufacture development then the nook ever will.
For the 250$ price point the nook is a superior product in every way. but there's still a bit of things that are lacking on the nook. but every day someone posts something in the dev form that gets me more and more interested.
i suggest you go to bestbuy, buy a nook, and play with it for a few weeks, see if you like what it has. if you want more return it. no harm. its very easy to reset back to stock for a return.
Cost. The main issue is cost. For 250, I think there is no beating the NC. The GTab lasted 1 day at home. For the cost, it wasn't worth it...
NF will soon be very stable and capable. It gets better every day. The screen is great, form factor is great, community is great, and you never lose the fact that it can be returned to stock to be a great e-reader when something new comes out. It will always be a very capable little tablet even after you have transitioned to a new device.
Oh, and good luck getting your hands on a Notion. Initial quality problems and backorders will keep it out of most people's hands for a while...
I was a little torn between the NC and Notion Ink myself. The bottom line, for me anyway, is the form factor. I personally think the Nook is the perfect size.
I was on the same boat as you but I saw my friend Nook rooted and that seal the deal for me. I have no regret and this have become the go to gadget at home between me and my wife.

I have a Nook Color and love it. But I also have a Pixel Qi and LCD version of the NI on order. To me it's like apples and oranges. I dont read books, or that many really. I just got hte Nook to hold me over until I got a respectable Android Tab. I use it for movies, XDA, Twitter, Email, etc. But in no way is it a full service tablet.
The Adam is designed to be almost a laptop replacement (out of the box). I was fully impressed with the full buildup of details down to almost every screw with the Adam and can tell you from personal experience that there is NOTHING like the Tegra 2. If you want to replace your laptop, then get the Adam. If you want a cool little ereader that doubles as a usuable tablet then go for the NC.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. I DO want a replacement for my laptop, but I mainly just want something that's easy to browse on. I know no tablet I buy will fully replace a laptop or desktop. For my browsing needs I think the NC would be good. But then I think about watching the guy play games on the Adam and switching between like 5 games with no lag. I do play games a lot and would love to have a decent sized screen and a good processor on it. I'll probably end up buying a color because I'm impatient and if I don't like it I'll return it. Only problem is the nearest B&N and Best buy are 2 hours away.

to be honest i think a 10" screen is just too big to be practical at least in most situations outside of the home. my plan is to use my nook for awhile until these sweet powerhouse tablets come down to earth price wise. once i can get an 8-8.5" tab with dual core tegra for under $300 i'm in
really the nook is great for web browsing and games as it is. once we get some solid roms going it will only get better.

Its the best 250 dollars you could possibly spend, plus it made gadget of the year on engadget alongside the likes of the ipad etc. Nuff said.
Plus if you have an android phone you can tether your Internet and practically have a 3g tablet.

I hate books and it was my first time in a Barnes and Noble, for 250 you CANNOT go wrong. I tether my internet from my phone and have internet everywhere my phone does. Get one, you wont regret it.

Buy one and play around with it. Barnes and Noble has a 14 day return policy so you really have nothing to lose.
If you use the microSD card method with Honeycomb then your Nook won't change. However you can still root the installed OS and play around with the Nook, restore it to stock and return it if you don't like it.

i tried in the b&n and a little bit disappoint..
everything is fine except the lcd is a little bit small..i have a hd2 with 4.3 inch lcd,,i am worrying about nook can not do more than hd2..
maybe i will wait for the completed honeycomb build with graphic acceleration..
NC is not a high end tablet like xoom or upcoming ipad too because it was designed as a ereader.

Well I have an evo and in my opinion its well worth getting. It IS actually high end quality and you can't really judge by whats in the store because that is the very limited stock OS.

So far it seems to be a good buy. I had had mine for three days. The first day I ran it stock. Too boring.
Second day I ran it with Monster root which made it much nicer as I was able to load apps from the Market.
Third day tried the Nookie Froyo on SD card. Cool since it got rid of annoying lower notification bar. I keep hitting it instead of the space bar.
Some apps don't seem to work correctly so its not perfect. I think it will take a while till I find the perfect ROM for my nook along with the perfect apps. It took me 5 months to settle down with a ROM on my Captivate.
But then it's $250 vs 700 for xoom. Ipad, no thanks even though I'm sure it works out of the box.

For the quality of the display alone it is well worth the $250, even if it weren't also inadvertently a surprisingly adequate little tablet. The processor isn't going to blow your pants off or anything, but considering what it costs it really is amazing.
I don't do much book reading, but I've been trying to look for a device I could use while commuting back and forth to work or when traveling.
I didn't want to shell out $700 for iPad + service; I don't own a iPhone nor cared to get one. I am a tech geek at heart and enjoy re-purposing equipment through any means possible.
So the Nook Color is turning out to be the perfect device/tablet for my needs.
Easy and fun to root and once running Andriod, the world of possibilities has opened up. I no longer have to pull out my Dell M11x to do my light surfing/gaming/reading on the plane/train/bus. In addition, I'm getting back into reading again.
It is worth every penny of the $250 + change I paid for it. It will only get better as the dev community becomes stronger and the app market grows. I think the NC is a solid device and a great contender to the upcoming tablets being released. Hopefully devs can figure out how to get Bluetooth and FM radio working; functionality that wasn't available since Nook Color was developed as an eReader.

I can only add from my experience...
My wife got me the NC as a present last Xmas and I didn't as much as touch it since about a week ago. The reason for my suddenly sparked interest was that I came across the amazing opportunities this "ereader" offers after some tweaks!
So far I rooted it, briefly tried the Honeycomb via SD (stopped it though b/c I had no real clue what I could/should do with it), and installed useful apps via market. Oh, and I oc'ed it to 1.1 GHz as well.
Unless you are made of money and can afford the Xoom (which I am really interested in but it's for now not affordable) you should consider the NC!

Also I saw it somewhere and it's true. 7" tablet = 1 handed tablet, 10" tablet = 2 handed tablet. I really like the size of the Nook Color. No doubt a 10" tablet would be nice for a lot of things, but the smaller tablet really works well I think.

It's hard to beat the $250 price of the Nook. I've bought 5 of them and rooted them for family members. Everyone Loves them!
I've been playing with HCv4, but it's not ready for daily use. Can't wait for Honeycomb ADOP. The nook will be nearly perfect balance What's honeycomb is installed.

I agree about the Nook Color doing everything you want. I made the jump primarily for 1 reason: Autodesk Sketchbook Pro.
If the NC had a decent enough screen for me to use a stylus with, I probably would have never considered it. However, the higher resolution screen an larger work surface were definitrely a plus. $600 was definitely a lot to spend just to get those things, but all things considered,
honestly, what more can the XOOM do (besides camera related stuff) that we already can't do on our $250 Nook 95% of the time?

Had the xoom came out in late January, I would have been in for one, but I went with the nook a few weeks ago and I am completely happy with it. I don't care for the cameras and I like the smaller size. GPS would be nice but thats about all I miss.
Price point is too high for me. The NC is doing nearly everything I need and is fun to play with. If bluetooth becomes functional (fully) it will be the cat's meow for me I'll certainly upgrade someday, but I'm waiting for the initial Android tablet offerings to settle out some first.

I seen where people were ordering the Xooms from Motorola directly using a 25% off accessories coupons that was working on the Xooms, lol, but they've fixed that already.

I'm looking for a 10" tablet really. I initially bought the iPad which is nice except lack of SD card and intrusive use of iTunes made it useless. If I can't pull files off the device while I am out, then it is completely dead to me.
I bought the NC because of the screen and price point but the Xoom has everything that I want. The NC is cool but it can barely run Honeycomb so I would consider it an end of life unit right out of the box.
The Xoom on the other hand comes loaded with honey comb and should be good enough for a few more versions.

I ordered my Xoom while the Motorola site still had their 25% off glitch. So I got it for $630 free 2 day shipping and a free gel case. Main reason is that most applications act funny on my NC with Honeycomb.... My wife will probably kill me

Well, as a rooted incredible owner, i feel safe in chiming in.
Frankly, since getting my Nook, my incredible has seen almost 0 use, short of kicking on WiFi tether. The nook with CM7 is amazing, and does everything my Inc did, but better. Its more fun to game on, work on, and browse on, but still small enough to take with me everywhere. I love it.
What don't i like about it? Bluetooth range could be better, but thats about it...
When I'm not at work on a computer already, it's my go-to browser, email client, news reader, and e-reader.
I'm moderately jealous of the browsing experience on an iPad, and its silky smooth responsiveness.
I wish the Nook had 3G and a mic, but I'm certainly not complaining @ $249.
My introduction to Android was my Thunderbolt which of course I rooted and played with for awhile. Then the NC caught my eye since I've used a Sony reader for a few years and with a little net research I just had to have the NC.
Primary use = ebook reader
Bonus uses = games, internet and the ability to play with the Android OS with the comfort of knowing that no matter how bad I screw up the NC will boot from the SD card and can be fixed.
My NC normally runs the latest CM7 stable release but I can experiment with other roms whenever I feel like playing around and know that I can always reflash my last stable rom with all my settings and apps.
Btw is 225$ in ebay already.

I don't have a Droid Incredible, however, I do tend to use my Evo 4 G less that I use to because of the NC 7 in screen. With CM7, browsing, reading, gaming, & etc. are way better!!! My advice, get one!!!

using dalringo's builds the overclocking is in the settings menu (if that is what you are using)
I also have an Evo 4g and could NEVER put the thing down. Honestly since the nook color I use my Evo as a phone except for wifi tether (well I am flashing mikgs 3.0 Rom as I type this for my Evo. I got my NC on craigslist for $100.00 from a kid that didn't read one book on it, brought it home, rooted it, put cm7 on it and couldn't be happier. I also have a first Gen ipad that I don't even look at anymore. I actually have the ipad on craigslist for a trade for a Xoom. IMO the NC is the best bang for your Buck. It doesn't have a cam or GPS but your Droid Inc does ... SO GO GET IT AND PUT CM7 ON IT!

Another Incredible owner here: Other than making a phone call, or playing a high end game that requires my Monstrous laptop my nook has replaced EVERY SINGLE DEVICE in my house, for both myself and the wife.
Now that i have one I'm not sure what i did without it!
Also using Incredible, I consider the NC one of my best purchases. So much can be done.
Still rocking the Incredible with the XDA Premium App.
I am not using stock firm, but always used CM7 ROMs. I loved when I used Froyo, but with Gingerbread update i hated it due to battery bug. It won't go to sleep and drain the battery in 2-3 days without any use. But since CM7 nightly 82 build, they fixed this bug, and I love my Nook Color with Gingerbread.. You will love this toy. Its great!!!

Sure, I consider the Nook to be such a great tool, for what it was made and for all the potential it has resting within.

Might be your stylus. I have one I got from best buy, soft rubber tip - forget the manufacturer, but it's all black. I can go find out in a few days if you'd like.
Works great, haven't had an issue with it. I prefer to use my finger most often, but it comes in handy in some games.
In regards to the thread purpose, the Nook is definitely worth it if you are already here in this forum ... you have all the tools in front of you to unlock it's potential.
I don't have a smart phone, can't compare to that, but like others have mentioned before - perfect size of portability vs. usability. I still prefer a real sized monitor if possible, but more often then not there is no real pc around.
It's big enough to make browsing the web worthwhile, and not squinting into a tiny smart phone. I used to have an ipod touch, which is about that size, and it just wasn't a good web experience.
It rides along in one of the cargo pockets of my pants, can't tell you how often i've been glad to have it (even before I rooted it)
The price point makes it. At half the cost of a 'tablet' you get all the functionality, and darn close the power.
I don't think you'll regret picking one up if you do.

I just overclocked it yesterday to 1100m and its awesome!! I love it even more!!!
So I'm in the market for a new toy to tinker with and I'm wondering if I should continue to look at the nook color as an option. I just bought a HP touchpad that I'm planning on returning simply cause I'm used to working with android and CM and don't want to fragment myself further.
Is the nook a worthy investment; do I have to worry about the community walking away from it like I see they are beginning to do with the evolution I own, or should I wait for some of the other 7-9" android offerings in the roster? Any input is appreciated.

I love my nook, but I think you may like the HTC Express better, (the flyer\evo view)

I like my NookColor a lot.
I have not used a Android tablet like Xoom or Acer or Asus to compare.
But it seems to work well.
ManualNooter = Works Very nicely, and also lets you have the NookColor stock OS look.
CM7 Works a good bit snappier imho than ManualNootered NC.
Mine is ManualNooter'ed as my wife reads now and then and does not like the CM7 interface.
I do a lot of reading and posting on ClubNook.com forums on mine, for the most part it does well. (I have it O/C also)
The Nook has a great screen, low price and it's the perfect size and weight. You can hold the Nook for long times without your hand becoming fatigued. I've used a few other tablets and I can honestly say I prefer the Nook. The Nook also has an active community with some great talent, I personally believe we'll see an ICS port and continued support for some time.
One of the best features of the Nook is that it boots from the sd card first. This device is, to my knowledge, the only android device to have this feature. Almost makes it unbrickable. But as has already been said, the dev community for the nook is great and cyanogen, with all the recent improvements, puts the nook on par with many of the higher end devices on the market. While there are a number of very good android tablets on the market, the nook, for the money, is one of the best values out there.

It cannot be beat for $200 (re-certified). Everyone who I have shown this thing to wants one, including a coworker who has a Xoom tablet already (not to replace it, but to have in addition to because of size).
My Mom uses hers for:
Angry Birds and Solitaire
Epub format books (Moon Reader +)
Grocery list (Grocery King)
Viewing pictures in Gallery
Email
Web browsing
Pandora Radio
Netflix
Alternately, my Wife has a 1G iPad and would not trade it for any Android tablet.
If you genuinely want to tinker with it, then you want a nook. It's virtually impossible to brick, and if you did somehow manage to brick it you'd only be out $200/$250.
If you just want a cool toy -- you probably still want a nook. It has a great screen, and is speedy enough for just about anything you throw at it. Unless you get a really great deal on something with a much better processor, the nook is the best bang for the buck.
If you want it to show off -- it depends on who you're showing it off to. Execs probably won't be impressed by anything unless it looks like an iPad, techy people will think it's awesome, and average people will be intimidated by the idea of hacking an ebook to be a tablet.

I have both a NC and a Asus Transformer (and an iPad), and am an App developer.
My 2 cents is that the Nook Color is a great ebook reader, but a bit limited as a tablet. Honeycomb is a reasonable first cut at a tablet interface where has the NC's 2.2 or CM7 both feel like they were meant for a phone. So if I wanted the tablet experience I would spend the extra money and get a true Android table running Honeycomb.

My $0.02:
For a guy who love to tinker but doesn't want to spend a lot of cash-o-la, the NC is awesome. Even if I had unlimited funds, I would still get a 7" tablet. 10" (like the girlfriend's Viewsonic Gtablet) is too big, and the speed difference between our processor and a tegra for what I do (PDFs, surfing, etc) doesn't really come into play (I am overclocked at 1.2 GHz, however). If you want to play HD vid (on a non HD screen?), or want HDMI out or a full sized usb port, get something else).
This is the best community I've found on XDA, and the developers here are nothing short of amazing.
As mentioned earlier, you can get a NC for $180 on ebay. It's tough to beat. Then again, I have a desktop for CFD, a laptop for portable power, and a NookColor for accessing stuff on the fly. I couldn't justify spending $500+ (give or take) on a Android tablet when I could buy a laptop that could do a lot more and still get a NC for the same price.
Well the issue isn't money although I am a very frugal/ value conscious individual. Like I said I have a HP touchpad but I plan on returning it cause of the size; which I feel instead very portaboe, and due to me being so deep into android that I'm not extremely interested in webos. I got a great deal on the touchpad but I like to get the most enjoyment out of my time and from the capabilities of the NC I've seen on YouTube it is a tempting device regardless of price. My only fear is that it will soon be a forgotten device like I see happening to my HTC evo. Thanks for all your input.
