[FIX] Slow Data Speeds on Nexus S 4G UPDTED: Now includes edited HOSTS file! - Nexus S Android Development

There is a thread in the Q&A section regarding slow data speeds on the Nexus S 4G. Coming from an Evo running CM7 we all had slow data speeds also, however there is an easy fix for it.
*****YOU MUST HAVE A ROOTED DEVICE FOR THIS TO WORK*****
This only works on Sprint Nexus S 4G's as far as I know. Those with the GSM variant may test this and post their findings.
Disclaimer: I am not responsible for any damage to your phone.
What's required?
Rooted Nexus S 4G (Sprint)
Root Explorer
30 seconds of time
Speedtest app for your own results.
**5/26/2011: UPDATED METHOD**
Here is a link to the edited HOSTS file. Use Root Explorer or ADB to transfer it to your device.
http://db.tt/fMVteAE
Move it to the /system/etc folder
1. Download the Speedtest app from the market and run a test over 3G, take a screen snapshot.
2. Open root explorer and navigate to /system/etc and in there you will find a file called "hosts"
3. Long-press on the "hosts" file and click "Edit with text editor"
4. You will see "127.0.0.0 localhost" change that to "0.0.0.0 localhost"
5. Press menu>save & exit.
6. Restart your phone.
7. Run Speedtest app again and screen snapshot your results and post them for everyone to see!
*Optionally you can visit a speed testing website.
I will update the OP with before and after pictures of my own!
Troubleshooting: Upon clicking "Save & Exit" it will save a backup copg of your hosts file as "hosts.bak" if you have any issues, delete your "hosts" file and rename "hosts.bak" to "hosts" and restart your phone. Otherwise, post them here and I will address them.

Not to be "that guy" but the post specifically says "4G" right in the title. So yeah pretty safe bet its not for you GSM guys

I don't see how this would work when 0.0.0.0 is basically a wildcard for all traffic so it will redirect everything to localhost?

i don't see how this is going to help as this is a radio/signal issue.

It's not. It's something with the speedtest.net app.
I can run the speedtest.net app on my nexus all day long and get about 3-4mbit max but I can tether my nexus and get 12mbit+ over 4G all day long.

I agree, I was tethering last night and getting 10+ which is fine by me. Another thing I've noticed about the speedtest app is that it picks the closest server and not always the best one. I switched to a few that were only 50 to 100 kms further away and got faster results this way.
Keep in mind this is only a way to try and get better results, your actual speeds aren't going to be effected...

Seems to have increased my results. First two tests are before, most recent two are after
Sent from my Nexus S 4G

The results are random, it works on some phone and doesn't work on others, however more than likely it will work on your device.
I will update the OP to specify that it is for the CDMA Nexus S 4G

Speedtest app is broken on this phone. It is a fact. Go do a browser based speed test to see your legit speeds. Do not take what one app says as gosphel.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk

lol my 3g is faster than that...

Like I said. The app is broke

Seems to work for me: 1010kbps before, 1249kbps after.

On cm7 nightly 4 crespo4g. My host file says 127.0.0.1
Uncle Jimmy says hello

I was unaware speedtest app was broked for us, but speakeasy's browser test seems to confirm my earlier results

I have my ns4g on boost mobile and it seems to increase results with 3g but i cant get 4g as you know.
It also gives me 3/4 blue bars instead of 2/4 with 3g on

For US Tmo 4G DS7 users: Confirmed working using the link inside

Myself saw a lot of posts and people asking if it works for US Tmo 4G users.
Here is my confirmation
YES it works for me using the method below:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1286295&page=1
And a quick instruction is here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1286295&page=8
Credit goes to author of the above two post.
I just confirm that, following the method above, my Tmobile DS7 is still able to use TMobile 3G network and my wifi is working as well.
But 4G network is not, or at least not shown at lower right corner as "4G", like I even care because HSPA is barely 4G. Just a faster 3G
what kind of speeds do you see though? noticeable decrease??
No. Not at all!

I downloaded the .zip from the first link and followed the instructions and can confirm that it works. However I do not have a data plan on my DS7, so I cannot confirm cell connectivity/speed. In froyo there would be a cell signal strength indicator, but I see none of that here. There is the option to receive cell data or roam.
This version of Honeycomb is a bit more refined than Honeystreak (no offense intended) there seems to be no issue with resolution or screen size in either orientation.
Now, to get all my apps back...
I dont kno how to use cmw.

Woah, if you don't have a data plan, then you DON'T know if hc will work with T-Mobile data. The fact that there is no wireless icon info ndicates it most likely will work on WiFi only.
Can you change the title of your thread? It is misleading. Yes, you can flash, but people want to know that their T-Mobile data will connect with the WiFi hc update.

Nor my thread - I am just responding to the OP. Additionally, the title says the ROM works with T-Mo DS7s, which is true. Just that I personally cannot confirm cell data.
If you read the first couple of posts, you'll see that the OP confirms normal cell service.

For the moment I'm holding on. Really, except for battery life, Froyo is working very well, and lots of apps work on this version. The OP indicates the manual update process does provide cell service, so I may go ahead and try. I always like the latest!
I'm going through some issues with dell right now. I bought this S7 from an XDA user, and apparently he bought it from someone else, because his name is not in the dell computer as the original owner. So I have to find out the original information so I can call them about updates after they transfer ownership.

Engadget loading really slow

For some reason engadget does not load or it is very very slow
this happens time to time on other sites also.
yahoo/google load up fast as anything but there are lags on other sites.
anyone else having this problem?
Hrm... Miren will not load anything for me right now,
I opened "web" and google/engadget/yahoo etc came right up. That is annoying...
Edit: wtf Miren working fine on Wifi. Tried clearing Miren data I can get to google and google stuff, but can't get engadget or newegg or yahoo to load.
Edit2: Well than I tried Web again and it didn't load so it appears I may be having data issues anyway at the moment.

awesome speeds are def consistent now!
This is happening to the Vivid as well I was told ATT was working on a fix
hmm seems im not the only one with a problem, i damn near went to best buy to swap the thing for another.
Called AT&T, they asked me if I can try that sim out on a Vivid at the store to see if I get the same problems. If it does, they'll swap out the sims or if it doesn't, they'll swap the phones. I know it's not the phones. They even said themselves that the "pta" network is brand new so they're still working out the kinks.
I wouldn't have called if the "change your APN" settings had working MMS capabilities. It doesnt, and I really do need that.
Just went and swapped out for a new vivid and LTE sim card. Same problems. Me and the rep checked the 4 phones on display, 2 skyrockets and 2 vivids , all were showing the same problems.
This is in Frederick, MD.

sprint s4 metropcs mms fix

This is to fix Mms message on metropcs flashed sprint galaxy s 4 your phone most already be flashed to metropcs with working internet, Flash the zip in recovery and reboot, mms messages should work from first boot. This will last thru a factory reset.
Edit: I was ask to add some details as to wat the zips doing and wat I do. I edit the mms-config.xml in the stock Mms.apk/SecMms.apk to settings from verizon which work for metropcs, I also use an apns-conf.xml that I edited for metropcs. the zip will mount data and mount system, it will delete Mms.apk/SecMms.apk and Mms.odex/SecMms.odex, it will delete dalvik-cache for Mms.apk/SecMms.apk, it will delete the telephony.db file in /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/ which countains apns. it will replace Mms.apk/SecMms.apk with the one I edited for metropcs it also replaces the apns-conf.xml in /system/etc/ which countains the default apns for the one I edited for metropcs (on first boot the phone will create a new telephony.db with the default apns countained in this apns-conf.xml, that is why this fix lasts thru a datawipe/factory reset). For more details take a look at the updater-script.
for the 4.3 script, flash the zip - reboot to system. Then open dialer and dial ##3282# hit edit enter spc then go to more then lte apn settings and click the circle on the right of the global roaming apn to activate it then hit home and all should be good
if you have issue where messaging app has default android icon use root explorer go to /system/app long press on SecMms.apk select move hit back hit back again go to /sdcard and paste SecMms.apk on sdcard, it should now show the up on sdcard with normal icon long press on SecMms.apk select move hit back go to /system/app and paste SecMms.apk back in /system/app and reboot phone should now show normal messaging icon
I am not responseable for anything that happens
Thanks to uncorrupted for the build.prop editor

Hang on...I must clarify. As much as I love to profit off of Metro flashes, we need to get the facts straight.
Flashed phones to Metro will not work nationwide. Boost will. Metro has better talk & text in their coverage area, but their data can either be equal to or slightly slower then Boost (depends what time of the day you're on the network). We also JUST got 3g here in the Tampa Bay area, and we're a huge market, go figure.

ive had very good luck though if i may say so myself. i have traveled to florida new york san francisco and alabama and gotten very good coverage on my flashed s3 from verizon and im suing the 3033 prl in atlanta. its faster than i could have hoped for. i have heard though before that flashed phones do not work well outside of the state theyre flashed in but aside form that metro itself has bigger coverage than boost and sprint. and now they are merging with t-mobile although im still not sure how thats working out because theyre rolling out city by city certain thing such as hartford dallas baltimore and i think boston.

Download the file and flash it after you flash your ROM and gapps. Once it boots up go into to your APN settings. By hitting settings>more>mobile networks>access point names.
Hit the little menu button and select default.
Select the Straight Talk APN that pops up and reboot.
I've tested and this works great. APNs are not a hard thing to enter but just a pain in the butt and you may not always have your APN settings.
So if you have Straight Talk you can use this for your APN this is not for any other cell phone provider.

i wish i had this two days ago lol. i've entered my apn about 12 times already. to anyone not sure, this is the exact APN on straight talk's site
http://straighttalkbyop.com/program.php#
Name straight talk
APN tfdata
Port 80
MMSC http://mms-tf.net
MMS Proxy mms3.tracfone.com
MMS Port 80
and this is in the zip
<apn mnc="410" mcc="310" mmsport="80" mmsproxy="mms3.tracfone.com" mmsc="http://mms-tf.net" port="80" apn="tfdata" carrier="Straight Talk"/>
as you can see they are identical :good:
I just signed up for StraightTalk. And apparently, it seems you use different APNs depending on which SIM you installed. There's one for AT&T, one for T-Mobile, and a third one (?).
Here's a site that gives the info for the AT&T and T-Mo ones.

Duplicate text's is an issue many of us have had. Please let Sprint know you're experiencing the issue here: https://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/179054
Also, try switching to LTE and see if anything changes. I've been on LTE since N5 and have never had issues. I'm also not ruling out #blameSprint as a culprit.

I switched it to LTE rebooted and still same problem
It takes a while for my phone to connect to, by the time I enter my password and view the home screen signal is back. I have experience text message error, even when I am in an area with 4 bars LTE. I haven't had any MMS issues yet. This may be due to Sprints abysmal network.
Seemed to temp fix mine by using 3g only texts send no problem and i can actually stream pandora without it skipping every second
Can't believe internet is faster on 3g
That's a network issue on Sprints part. Buddy of mine had an S4 with no LTE but 3G worked. The sim card ID was incorrect on their end. They reset it correctly and everything works.
