please help modding - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am trying to mod a 2.2 based dialer to work on 2.3.3. I have extracted both DialerActivityTab.apk's
Then:
1) From the 2.3.3 based, I cut folders AndroidManifest, classes.dec and resources.arcs. All other (assets, META and res) files have same exact date of mod
2) From 2.2 based, I cut the same files out.
3) I then paste the 2.3.3 files to 2.2
I zipped this and put in phone (root Ex>System>app) renamed the original and paste the new DTA.apk
Interestingly enough when I tryed the dialer it went back to the previous dialer! When I go back into RE the icon matches the renamed DTA.apk
So what else can I/ should I do?

i guess the proper question here is, did you actually use apk manager to decompile all this or are you trying to do all this from a zip file manager?

It was all done directly through 7zip, I transfered from zip into zip (2.3.3 DAT.apk to the 2.2 DAT.apk) these were not unzipped and re zipped.
From the tone of your post... this isn't right!

When your dealing with Apks from different os versions there is alot more to it then adding missing files. What from the dialer do you want? They are pretty much the same

Can you post a screen shot? When you say third Row down, what do you mean? The dialer with only 3 buttons in the bottom row?

I tried this on my first attempt, however it somehow reverted back to the one installed with the rom. What I have been doing (to swap out the original DTA.apk) is renaming it to DialerTab Activity2.apk and leaving it there in app. after palcing the newly created DTA.apk I have selected install.
As you've stated, I too thought it was a simple image swap.

You can't have it in there twice. Doesn't matter what you name the file. You can only have one dta apk in there. Remove the stock one while you are modding

Oh yeah as long as you have the same dialer set up it should just be swapping the images but if you have one of the diapers from the captivate without the video call button or a 3 button bottom row it wont be as easy.

sorry, it's on post #7 with the first pic
This is where I was a week ago. attached are the two drawable-hdpi files from the rom and theme. I originally swapped everything out of the roms dialer and moved the items from the themes dialer into that file and reinserted it back into the DTA.apk and then on to the phone... Was this right. Sounds like the only thing I did wrong was to leave the original DAT.apk in the app folder (on the phone) however I did rename it.

Ok I saw that one. lol Maybe I am a little confused on just what you want to do. The dialer in the pic shows one set up for video call, but most roms for the captivate have that button removed as it is point less, the theme can be brought over if that is what you like. What rom are you on?

Ok I just looked at the 2 files you posted, If you notice there are not the same number of files. I can do it but might not be today. If you would like what you do is after making sure the images are the same size for both, replace the images one by one instead of the whole folder. Only do the images.

[THEME] Rotary Style Lockscreen for EE 3.0 or CE 1.1 [UPDATED: 06/08/2010]

[THEME] Rotary Style Lockscreen for EE 3.0 or CE 1.1 [UPDATED: 06/08/2010]
This is a rotary style lockscreen for use with EE or CE. The one for EE may possibly work on other ROMs. However, it could cause a boot loop if it does not work, so make a backup before trying. It may also break things non-related to the lock screen. This mod involves editing the android.policy.jar file which is why this is specific to EE 3.0 and CE 1.1. If you like this mod but it does not work right on your ROM, send me your jar file and I will mod it for you.
I got the idea for this from this thread, so thanks to JsChiSurf for the files in the thread. I initially tried just flashing his zip, and it did give me the rotary style lockscreen, but it broke a lot of other system related items. So I compared both my file and his to find where the differences were to make this modded one for EE.
You can choose either the transparent background with the date and time showing or the transparent background with only the charge status showing. I am going to try and make these with the option for a background. There is a link to a MetaMorph theme in the second post if you would like to remove the arrows while unlocking. Let me know if any of you have other suggestions.
UPDATED: I removed the flashable zip files and made some MetaMorph themes that do the job for both EE and CE. The EE lockscreen is transparent atm and comes with or without the time and date. The CE one is not transparent and shows your current selected wallpaper or live wallpaper.

Instructions:
1. Do a NAND backup first!
2. Remove the HtcLockScreen.apk if you have not already
Code:
adb remount
adb shell mv /system/app/HtcLockScreen.apk /system/app/HtcLockScreen.bak
3. Download the appropriate MetaMorph theme
4. Apply the theme in MetaMorph
(NOTE: If your phone does not reboot or MetaMorph does not ask you to reboot, or your phone locks while applying the theme, wait 10 seconds and either pull the battery or send a reboot command.)
5. Reboot & Enjoy
REMOVE ARROWS
1. Apply this MetaMorph theme from here to remove the arrows.
ADD BLUE UNLOCK BUTTON
2. Apply this MetaMorph theme to change to a blue button --> BlueRotary.zip This is loaded in the theme from the first post now
Oh wow, DO WANT.
After people stop texting me i'm definitely flashing this
I would love this for cyanogen eris
going to try and flash it and see if it works as is, just did a nandroid backup
Hey,
Firstly thank you for making this!
ITS AWESOME!
secondly just a quick suggestion, EE has always replaced the kind of stock HTC green with a blue. would it be possible to do this with the lock/unlock button so it fits the whole EE theme?

Check out this link. You should be able to use this. I didnt test it on CE so make sure to make a NAND first before trying. I have used it on Aloysius with no issues.

Would you mind sharing what/where the changes are? I would like to make one CyanogenEris.
It's fairly straight-forward, but it involves decompiling the Java classes, replacing some of them and then recompiling. If you read stopxstart's thread for the white notification bar, you will see what I am talking about. I will put together a little tutorial later when I get home from work.

I know how to de-compile it. I just need to know what changes where made to the smali files. Then I can make a metamorph for CE .
Sure, It's the LockScreen class. My files are at home, but you should be able to grab it from the one I posted.

Sweet! Just tried it .. Works! All I replaced was "LockScreen.smali" . If I don't see any errors I will post morph for CyanogenEris.
EDIT:
Ok, this is weird! Any idea why it says "SIM card is PUK-locked."? It only shows it when its plugged in to my laptop.
Try replacing the sub classes as well (I think that's what they are). There should be about five. They have the $ and integers in their name. If that does not help, then it is more ROM specific. To fix it will require editing the original smali instead of just replacing files. A Little more intense, but based on your results so far, it's possible.
Put this file in your MetaMorph theme to change the green button to cyan.

If I move the rotary to "Sound Off" it says "Screen Lock" then turning it back on it says "Power Off". LOL!
Yes, yes. Funny man. I know exactly where the problem is. Minor, very minor issue. The method is just referencing the wrong strings. I will fix it after work. I spent a while getting the other issue fixed. I'm an expert at logcat and Java errors now. At least they give you the line number.
By the time this is done, I will have added missed call notifications as well.

[Updated 7/13/2010] DroidX keyboard - Eris xtrROM theme

All-
Attached is a version of the new DroidX Multitouch keyboard that I have themed for my new release of xtrROM. I am not a fan of white or red and I like the raised key look screen shots below.
7/13/2010 - Updated new file that has a fix for the missing "<" key under ALT. Also fixed the long press on the "(" key. Please let me know if it works
A few notes:
includes fix for the dark keypad number for when you are in a number only field such as blue tooth.
vibrate on keypress has been fixed for Eris (not sure how it will feel on other platforms)
fixed the display of the "&" from "&;amp;" in alt mode
if you long press the "?123" key it brings up keyboard settings
voice to text support works well
[Edit per thenestor]
If you're using a ROM that already has a stock Android keyboard, you have to rename this "LatinIME.apk" and push it to /system/app, overwriting the vanilla keyboard (it uses the same package name: com.android.inputmethod.latinime). If you're using a Sense-based ROM, you can install it like any old APK.
This "should" work across phone platforms and on nonrooted phones however I have not tested.
This is my first themed app so let me know if it works and enjoy!
CREDITS to thenestor for helping me find the keyboard and which libs to use and unknown for the initial pull from the DroidX

That will probably work but there's no need to delete other files than the original bootanimation.zip or if you want it to work for every ROM the bootanimation.zip in all directories where it could be (did that make sense?) (Can't test it since i'm running Cronos Froyo...)

lol. that wasn't me, but thanks I also like white all the way to zero on the android battery mod. My question was on how to change the color of the sub text in the Settings menu. It's probably some tweaking of some xml file. metamorph maybe?
chance, im assuming this comes with the latest serendipity as well?
edit, downloaded see its just an updater. thank you for your hard work, this is awesome
I cant download using my phone because the download button is hidden by ads when i view the site on the mobile browser. This happens in both mobile and full views.

Very Sorry! I have pushed them as far right as possible let me know if that works better. Sorry for the Ads just trying to pay for the hosting for the kitchen.
Works now when viewing the full site, still not the mobile but that isn't a big deal. I understand the need for the ads though! What better way to get clicks than to cover up the submit button
now though it is giving me an error "content error - the requested file is too large for conversion in the gateway/proxy". Sorry for causing all this trouble! Is there anything i can do to help?
Just want to say thanks for all of your hard work new to the ROM thing here , love Serendipity makes my phone run 1000% better than before!
Now to find the equivalent of Serendipity for my wife's xperia x10a
BTW funds are low right now but I plan on making a donation soon
Just updated to 5.10 and tried out the Add-on Kitchen for the first time. Very impressed and thanks for streamlining! No problems to report at this time.
So I've been working hard to change the look of my phone. I came across this post under the i9000 themes forum for VA Green:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11129613&postcount=811
After some tinkering I got this nice epic unlock. But the Orb and Glass unlock kept the month and date. So can anyone help me with remove that? I don't know how to edit xml, but I'm willing to learn.

The layouts for the lockscreens are in the framework-res.apk so decompile that and then try removing the <textview> that correspond to the date and time.
Used rom kitchen for the first time today. Was excellent and worked like a charm.

Nice work Chance. This was great to build a mod update pack.
Running rgb v4 kernel and serendipity 5.10. The update packages compiled thru ur site aren't updating the mods I select. Haven't tried an app but the batt mod, clear not, animations do not change
Edit: 2.6.32.9 build on the kernel
Nice work Chance x4. U 2 are what make this rom so good.

I need the build number from the kitchen so I can look at the log.
Edit tested all of the above and its working fine. Was there an assert error?

Repacks/Themes TWRP3

Themes for 3.1.0-0. and 3.1.1-0. I've replaced the swipe action with a button so now it's all touch. The lock screen itself is also now one big button, you can touch anywhere to unlock it.
Batman
Forest
Skeleton
Storm
Hulk
You can install these manually or in recovery:
Manual:
go to your TWRP folder and create a new folder
name this new folder "theme"
after downloading the theme you want place it in this folder
rename the theme to "ui"
reboot into recovery and enjoy!
This is case sensitive be sure to use lower case and without the quotes.
Recovery:
As of 3.0.1-0 you can install these as if your where flashing something.
Keep in mind that this does overwrite the ui.zip in your TWRP theme folder so if you have a theme already your might want to rename it first!
Thanks to @z31s1g
The use of his themes and studying the xmls has been a great help.

Thanks to the TWRP team for this recovery

Actually.. Never said how to flash. Just says create theme folder and put zip in there and rename. I was thinking that just by going to recovery it would apply automatically. I figured it out though. I used Batman... Now I want to keep booting to recovery.. Lol

True but there isn't a need to flash anything. It's a matter of adding a folder, renaming a file and that's it. It worked for me

The best part about this is no flashing is required. So easy.

Thanks everybody for your feedback and helping others while I'm stuck at work. I didn't think it needed to be specified in the OP that this isn't a flashable zip but I'll put that in.

Wow! I'm on the latest Twrp(3.0.1).I'm pretty sure i had to flash mine. I tried just renaming, rebooting recovery and that didn't work. I'm going to change it (put a different one in) and see if it changes.
This is what I see now ( I only created one)
Crazy!! I deleted one and they both disappeared
Okay..switched to skeleton.. It changed no flashing. I believe the first one I created I used capital letters.. That may have been the problem. Thanks everyone for clearing that up For me

Both the theme folder and the renaming are case sensitive make sure it's all lower case. Also make sure that when remaining you don't add an extra .zip. It should look like:
ui.zip
not
ui.zip.zip
I looked at the xmls for 3.0.1.0 and I do need to update these to that but that's not the issue. I'm running it now with my Batman theme with no issues. Tested all three of them. Hopefully I'll have time to update them when I get home.
Downloads are failing.
Edit: never mind.
