[Q] Media Playback/Codec Problem - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What happens:
The phone refuses to play most media types, refusing to play songs, movies etc that had played without issue previously.
Music:
The stock touchwiz music player refuses to play mp3s, cycling through the playlist attempting several songs before exiting back to the list, displaying the error message "Sorry the player does not support this type of audio file". The same message is given when trying to use Fede's music app (fedecarnale's wp7 style music player)...
Video:
The video player gives the message "Sorry, this video cannot be played." while an alternative app QQ player plays the media without problems. Another example is the youtube app which gives "There was a problem while playing Touch to retry".
When does it happen:
This problem presents on both my Captivate and my girlfriends Vibrant after a non specific amount of time. One the problem presents, it remains regardless of memory or cache clearing, app closing etc.
What fixes it (temporarily):
As soon as one of these errors is given, the other apps behave the same way, and a reboot fixes the issue temporarily.
So I don't know enough about how the phone works to sort out the common cause of it all... but I can give you any information you want if it will help you sort it out... I realize that the difference between QQ and video player must be different than between fede's and the music player... I gather that he must be using more of the same stuff whereas QQ might bring its own codecs or whatnot... Any help would be greatly appreciated!
tldr:
I'm having media/codec issues with my SGS on froyo, have you heard of the problem? any ways to fix it?

I used to have this same issue when I was running Doc's XWJS8 Froyo rom with Hardcore Speedmod K13E Kernel. Since I switched to Simply Honey 3.5 Gingerbread it hasn't been a problem

I have this issue on stock Gingerbread ROM from Samsung (JPO). I didn't find a cure for it.

customer support was useless as anticipated, they suggested that it could be a corrupt app and I should factory reset... that is always their recommendation...
its just unusual that both my girlfriend and I would have it on different phones, different carriers and with a different set of apps...
The only real apps that we share in common shouldn't be going anywhere near media such as launcher pro and some games...

Well I was reading on another forum that Twitter for android seemed to be causing media files not to be read. More than one user reported no further problems when they uninstalled the twitter app and started using something different.
So it could be an app not playing well.

I have an AT&T Captivate with Froyo and I get the same issue. It is exactly as described here.
My phone has the froyo you install from Kies Mini.
Model number :SAMSUNG-SGH-I897
Firmware version 2.2
Baseband Version I897UCKB1
Kernel Version 2.6.32.9
I will try uninstalling my Twitter app and see.
The annoying part of this bug is that when i have a custom ringtone based on an MP3, it would not play so I would miss calls. I hope uninstalling the Twitter app fixes it. I'll reply back with it after a day.
This issue happens to me after about a day from restarting my phone (on/off)

I've gone a full day so far and my media still works.
I guess it is the twitter app?
Edit: yes it is the Official Twitter app causing this issue for me.
After uninstalling 2 days ago, I have not experienced this issue.

[Q] Music stopping randomly on WiFi only Xoom

OK so I have tried the stock music player, TuneWiki and PowerAmp and all three seem to have the same issue. The music will simply stop playing and it acts as though I pressed the pause button. I have my Xoom in the standard HD dock and I have seen this behaviour both through the speakers of the Xoom and when I have external speakers plugged into the dock.
I have tried to determine if a notification is stopping the music, but it does not appear to be triggered by that. I tried sending myself an email to both my Gmail and Touchdown (exchange) accounts and the notification played but the music resumed as expected.
Has anyone else seen this behaviour?
I have noticed this too but for me it only happens when loading something or deleting things and it must be using alot of CPU.
not sure if this is correct, but maybe it's not the CPU - maybe it's the internal memory. I mean, let's say you're playing music, and in the background you've got google services, tweetdeck, weather widget etc... updating data and then you open the market and so on
seems like a lot of things using the same memory. If memory was seperate like on the NExus One (some internal, some on sd) it wouldn't happen...
happens to me once in a while on my 3g xoom... doesnt bother me much. however sometimes the music app totally closes(force close) and sometimes the music pauses itself.
Happens to me sometimes too.
Sent from my Xoom
Mine does kind of the opposite....every once in a blue moon it will open the music app
I too have noticed this but only when another application is attempting to make a sound or notify. For example when I am playing music and an email comes through ... the music will pause while the email notification is playing.
I would check your running apps. Some poorly written apps might be grabbing the sound for some reason even though it is not needed by the app.
Mine does this on Wifi Xoom as well, only appears to happen on stock music player, winamp has worked fine. I think I has something to do with other apps running or transfering data over usb.
I think motorola/google need to release a stablity/bug fix update. Theres a few quirks that need to be ironed out.

Yea, stock music app seems to be full of bugs. For me it always resorts to having to reset the xoom because the whole thing crashes. This plus the constant force closes in browsers is really starting to annoy me. Winamp seems to fix the music issue but no other market browser solves the other issue. Sorry to get a bit off track. Google needs to get their act together. I don't think I've ever seen even a windows release this buggy.

[Q] sgs crash while playing music and screen locked

I just installed gingerbread xxjvk 2.3.3 on my galaxy s and then wanted to listen some music. but when i locked my screen my phone totally crashed and needed to hold the power button to reset. I tried it while playing from internal and external storage. and with eq on and off. i found out it didnt crash while browsing my storage and clicking a song and then play it. it only crashes if i search and play a song in the player itself. Plz help me i need my music
greetings jaap from the netherlands
I assume the music player's version is not prepared for gingerbread or that beta firmware has a problem with the way your player wants to search/open a file. Try a different one, for example PowerAMP is a great player!
It works. but i get an annoying clicking sound while playing sounds. i tried winamp to but it has the clicking sound to. So i solved one problem, and the next one appears
Trials and tribulations of running non stock/beta firmware i am afraid .
jje
Where can i get the original rom from galaxy s?
samfirmware.com has all the official firmwares you may need. by the way in my opinion go for a cooked froyo firmware with speedmod or voodoo kernel as they have significant improvements over sound quality via voodoo app from market (needs compatible kernel) and also they're more stable.
This happens on my HD2 as well when sound is distorting due to to loud and gain. Maybe this helps in finding a solution in Gingerbread for this issue. Great rom though!
Fat.

Are you using Beautiful Widgets by chance?

[Q] {Q} Amazon Cloud Player for Android problem since 3.1 update

Any of you use Amazon Mp3 app on your Xoom and are having problems with streaming music from your cloud drive since you updated to 3.1?
Im getting alot of Network errors and song skipping most often on the first song of any playlist. The web player isnt doing this so I am assuming it is something with the android app. Anyone else getting this ?
same thing happens to me
It doesn't seem to be just the app in 3.1, as my Droid X running the leaked Gingerbread has been having this problem off and on since the cloudplayer went live. It's not constant, but it does happen enough to be annoying.

[Q] Rdio on Slim ICS

Update 2 : Is anyone using Rdio successfully on Slim? I don't have enough posts to ask in the Dev section. I figure restoring the app and the data after flashing might have messed something up, but I'll end up using something else if Rdio simply doesn't work with it.
Update : I thought I solved the problem by clearing the cache, but it was clearing the data that fixed it. Now a few songs play before it freezes again. Still wondering what could be causing the problem.
Hello,
I'm having a problem with Rdio on Slim ICS and am wondering if someone else is in the same boat.
Whenever I start listening to music, whether streamed or synced, the app stops working after the first song. It does switch to the next song, but doesn't load it and sort of freezes (all the actions word except for switching songs or loading the one it switched to before stopping playback). Skipping to the next song during playback works and the app will play the next song if I fast forward to the end of the song and let it end normally. But after that, nothing.
I came to Slim from Team ICSSGS's rom and restored Rdio and data after flashing (was working then). Since then, I've tried both reinstalling the app through the Play store and deleting the Rdio folder in /Android/Data.
All I changed from stock is the launcher.
Could this have something to do with datadata? (If this seems very foolish, have a good laugh on me. I like to bring joy to the world.)
Hopefully I've included enough info. If not, feel free to say so!
Oh, and I would've asked the Rdio team directly, but they don't support custom roms.
Thanks!

Motorola xoom sound problem

I have been using Motorola xoom since last 6 month. Initially it was running on Honeycomb but later on i upgraded it to the ICS 4.0.4. When it was running on Honeycomb i could play audio files on some websites very well( like online news, live audio from FM stations etc). Flash player was also installed on it by default. After i upgrade it to the ics 4.0.4, i downloaded flash player from adobe archive page and installed the latest one " Flash player 11.1 for Android 4.0(11.1.115.27) . Now i can play such kind of audio files but after few minutes i hear annoying noisy sound which even becomes worse afterward. It has been a permanent problem, few minutes running very well and afterward making noise. I would like to know any techniques to get rid of it. Can i still go back to honeycomb version without losing its performance. Is there any other solution to that. Waiting for reply.
