[Q] Galaxy S Overheating - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I bought a SGS a few days ago. Everything was fine at first, but then it started to overheat even for a few minutes of use. It is around 32 degrees celsius when the screen is off, but even if I do nothing and keep the screen on for some time, it shows 41 degrees celsius. If I open a game or the music player it becomes 48.Not occasionally, every time I do the same thing. If it was a graphically intensive game it would probably be 55 easily. I deleted everythng and did a data factory reset, it slowed down the speed of the heating but the same thing happens eventually. I've checked similar threads and someone said even a temperature of 55 degrees is normal, but that can't be true since when the temp is 48-49 the phone becomes really sluggish, and apps stop working. Any ideas?
The most important thing is though, I dropped the phone once. However, it wasn't an issue that day and the day after. I don't think they are related, what do you think? Is there a cooling system that might be damaged? I don't want to send the phone back because there are small scratches around the silver part of the phone because of it and they might resend the phone saying it is the user's fault.
Lastly, the Froyo is installed now. If I upgrade to Gingerbread is there a chance that it will help the temperature stay normal?

I have had temperature of 60 degrees. It's pretty normal, I don't think gb would change anything from it.

When the temperature is about 50, the phone starts to lag badly, the browser lags and the games freeze. Before this, the highest I saw was 36 when playing a game.
As far as I know, when it hits 60 degrees, the phone turns off automatically, are you sure? It becomes very ucomfortable to hold too.

Definitely normal when the phone is doing something intensive. Phones don't have cooling systems - do you want a fan at the back of the device? Also, the phone can go beyond 60 degrees - it doesn't turn off when it reaches 60. If there is a defense mechanism it goes beyond that point. The battery on the other hand stops charging if the phone reaches a certain temperature. I don't recall any sluggishness with the phone at high temperatures or at least nothing like games freezing. One thing to do is to reduce to minimum the brightness of the screen coz Super AMOLED screens tend to produce a lot of heat at high brightness levels and that's what mainly heats the phone so much. Also, you can get a kernel with which you can undervolt the cpu - that will keep the cpu cooler.

I've never monitored internal temperatures, but....
Mine very rarely feels hot to the touch. If I played Dungeon Hunter for a half hour it would get pretty warm (not hot though) but that's normal I'd say. Send it back to Samsung Service Center - this phone costs half a grand, don't chance that it's slowly cooking itself to death!

Oh and I didn't find gingerbread to make a dramatic difference, wouldn't expect it to solve all your problems. Sorry dude.

try uc/uv-ing the phone, might help:\

I told you there was something wrong . It might be normal, but the beginning of it was definitely not normal. The thing is, when I set the alarm, the phone starts overheating. It goes to 40 without starting any apps, and sees 45-48 under 5 minutes of use depending on what I am doing. When I turn it off, it hovers around 36. I've never seen it past 38 even when there are three apps working. I've noticed this a few hours ago and still am still testing it, so I am not 100% sure, any of you had a problem with the alarm? It sounds even more reasonable because the time the phone started to do this roughly coincides with the time I set the alarm for the first time.
Hopefully the alarm is to blame, I can live without that .

I overclocked mine and It gets hot as hell. even when I charge the phone? Is there anyone who knows how to solve it?

How much heat can the N1 take?

So the other day, I forgot to close an app down--the Schwartz Unsheathed, if you are curious--and when I fished my phone out again, it was hot. Very, very hot. Battery information indicated 41C which, in the grand scheme of things, isn't that high (wouldn't worry me with a PC's graphic card, for example, or CPU) but it felt incredibly warm to the touch. Fine, I shut the app down, removed the battery cover and let the phone cool down. No problem.
It might be the apps I've been trying since then, but I have been experiencing performance and stability issues. Things slow down sometimes. On the Desire ROM, Rosie kept force-closing every now and again. On Enomther's which as we all know is just about the stablest thing that ever stabled, Launcher2 does ditto (the Launcher Dock may be the culprit, though, as it seems to do some weird **** and I've removed it since. Fiddling around with BetterCut also seems to cause force-closes). So could that be it? Did the phone overheat (but if so, shouldn't it have shut itself down) and now something's broken? Getting antsy. :/
41°C should not be a problem, but consider that this was a measurement from the battery pack and that a sensor like that can easily go +/- 5 to 10 degrees.
so well, some chip on the nexus could have gotten way hotter than 41°C. maybe something fried, some defect that was already there and now its really broken.
still, this can be a bit subjective, the phone will seem broken if you think it's broken you can always do a factory reset, reflash the current rom and try from there.
Yeah, could just be my own jitters--I'd experienced issues before, usually caused by a ROM or whatever--and lately my PC's been having problems, so it might well be some kind of placebo effect. Unless it and my N1 magically entered a symbiosis or something.
Thanks for the quick reply.
once my phone accidently fell onto my bed and under my pillow while i was charging it over night and i woke up at 4 am and found a burning out nexus under my pillow. i unplugged it and nothing seemed damaged but it still worried me.
I think if you are worried about it and you are rooted you should install SetCPU. It has a profile designed so that is you his a preset temp it will down clock your CPU.
I use setCPU to save my batterylife ie.
100% - 50% run full cpu on demand.
Idle/Standby downclock to 400Mhz
50% or less down clock to 600Mhz on demand
20% or less down clock to min.
I also complement this with locale for low bat. dimness, wifi off, bluetooth off. etc.. etc.. ( a little off topic I know)
Well, looks like updating More Icons Widget was what did it; things seem to work okay now.
Was wondering what the maximum advisable temperature is?
Maybe the phone has protection for the CPU? but Li-ion batteries dont like heat, it shortens their effective life.
my battery reached 44.3C yesterday on a 4 hour journey in the car using co-pilot and the phone actually net discharged despite the fact it was on a 1A USB charger for the entire journey - about 80% at start of journey and 20% at end.
I've installed setcpu now and set the temperature profile to drop the max speed to 768 if temp is >44C and another one to drop the speed if power is less than 30%, may need further tweaking though. This was not in my car and the back of the phone was effectively unventilated, in my car I have an open backed holder near an air vent.

N1 Overheating While In Car Dock

hey guys,
I got my car dock a couple days ago and started using it day 1.
impressions:
its sexy but a little hard to move around (prob cuz its new)
but i have a major problem with the nexus one heating up to almost 120 degrees Fahrenheit! and this troubles me cuz i dont want my battery to lose its charge capacity.
and if im on lets say 50% battery and i drive somewhere for 10-15 min using the navi on the car dock
the temp shoots up to 115-120 and the charge goes down to ~30%
anyone else having a problem with overheating while in the car dock?
i used it during the day and night (only to check if the sun was affecting it)
no change in results
i used it with every option on the power control widget off
i ran Advanced task manager and ended all apps before launching navigation
im considered a tech whiz
so ive put this thing through its paces
and they only way to not have my phone burn hotter than the atlanta summer sun is by turning the screen off and listening to the navi...not veiwing it while its on charge and keeping all wireless options and sync off except GPS
ideas greatly appreciated....
oh yeah
rooted n1
running cyan 5.0.6xx if its any consolation...
and its not undervolted...(problem? but then what about non rooted phones)
EDIT:
oh and today
after using the n1 and removing it from the car dock the screen was not responsive. couldnt use it to navigate
has to reboot the phone
I also noticed my Nexus heated up to 40-42 degrees C while using GPS with Screen on for 15 minutes. Burning hot.
no one has any problems?
ive been noticing its msotly because of the sun that it gets scorching hot but at night it does rise past 115 degrees F
120 degrees fahrenheit (49 degrees celsius) is not very hot for computer parts. The reason it reaches those temperatures I guess is because of google maps (if you used that for navi). When you use google maps it's almost constantly using your data connection and that is one of the most battery intensive tasks if I remember correctly.
Oh and I wouldn't classify a little over 40 degrees celsius as burning hot, I've been to places hotter than that, but I guess it's subjective
Seems that overheating is mainly an issue for those running Cyanogen's ROM, no?
My N1 can get hotter than 50 Celsius in under 10 minutes. It's really a bit frightening. I have noticed, however, that this ONLY occurs when the battery is not near full. Turning the screen off seems to help cool it down (more testing needed). However, turning off the screen doesn't help when you need it for gps.
I am using cyanogen, but not the cyanogen kernel. Overheating occurs both in sunlight and at night. I believe it occurred while not running google maps as well, but I can't remember for sure.
I've had no problems, but I did notice how hot it was. I figured it was because of the sun since I had it mounted on my window glass.

Google maps only uses a data connection when it initally pulls down the route information and when it needs to recalculate the route.
You can put your phone into airplane mode after the inital pull and google maps will still function as expected (Except it will not pull down new maps if you stray from the path).
The issue is that you are trying to charge the phone and use it at the same time. The mechanism for doing this charges the battery and depletes the battery at the same time, this makes a really hot battery.
Keeping the screen off when its not needed in the dock and you will have less heat issues when you need to charge your phone in the car dock.

yeah this car dock i am really getting mad at
i wasted 60 bucks for something that heats the hell out of my phone
i listen to music so loud the bluetooth speaker isnt loud enough to tell me where to turn when the screen is off so...
i guess ill try out enomthers rom with the UV kernal and report back
the major cause of it is the sun
because at night the phone doesnt go over 100 degrees F when using the navi

Does anyone having this problem use "set cpu"?
I had a the same problem because my cpu was set to 998 during charging. so then I had the three main things that cause heat ganging up. battery, gps and cpu. All i did was set the cpu to 806 while charging and the heat problem went away...
I imagine that the stockers don't have this problem because they are under-clocked...
The main problem is the sun. I have Rodriguez's rom with the overclock and the only thing causing it to heat up is the sun.
Setting the CPU lower I will try but on setcpu I don't set it to userspace anymore. Its set to ondemand and no profiles set. Ill set a profile for overheating at 120°F to max 806mhz

What's your phone temperature right now?

I've been having some abnormal temperature in my N1 today, and it's got me a little bit worried. It's at 35ºC right now, while not doing anything. It's been a hot day alright, but I doubt that can have such a strong impact can it?
What is your phone's temperature when idle? What can be considered "outside normal"?
31c in the daytime, 28-30c at night.
i believe its safe, anything under 45c
It's weird though, it had never done that. I even turned it off for some time, but still. The antenna cover is definitely hot.
26.3°C right now.
26.6 'C here now..

Right now (indoors with cool temp) its at 80.6*F
Outdoors mine will get to about 90 - 95*F usually since I am using 3g, sometimes GPS, and the brightness is maxed out.
I dont let it get passed 99*F though since that would harm the battery. Good thing is though is it's never gotten to that point
32C right now. I've gone over 50C when using it as a GPS in sunny weather. Battery seems to be fine. Replacement battery at $25 (cheaper if you shop around), so I figured an average battery lifespan of 1 year isn't a big deal.
Damn, you guys have cold phones. Ive never seen my phone below 32c. Even if I check in the morning right when I wake up.
25C.
Lowest I've seen often is 21-22 C, but that is only overnight and I put my phone on airplane mode.
For those of you with hot phones, do you live in hot climates? I've noticed my phone stays warm when I'm out in the sun.
Also, make sure you don't have widgets/etc syncing all the time. I set them to 1 hour at most, and often 4 hours.
29.6.......
Running FroYo and OC kernel atm, so usually range from 26C-38C, anything higher than 40C freaks me out so I set up failsafe on SetCPU. Lowest I've got was 18C/19C with Enom's 1.8.1|IR's kernel.

Got widgets, news, contacts & email synching all the time. So my phone is constantly over 30c. Goes under 30c at night time (less activity perhaps). Regardless, the battery should be sufficiently warmed if you want to keep a charge. Just don't hit the 50C mark too many times though, which is pretty much unavoidable when you use GPS a lot.
But I've noticed that after upgrading to Froyo 2.2 the battery seems to run cooler and drains much less compared to 2.1. That and a boost in performance is short of ingenious on Google's engineer's part.
However, I reverted back to CM 5.0.7.1 cuz it's just not as polished yet. Waiting for CM6 instead.
I think there definitely is something wrong with the phone... I woke up and it was cool when I took it from the stand, then I browsed a couple web pages and I canalready feel it getting warm. It got burning hot when I charged it yesterday, too.
In case it is a hardware problem, what could be the cause?
I've just removed the battery and, surprisingly, it's cool. It's the antenna cover, the plastic part at the bottom where it says HTC, that seems to be getting hot. Does that even make sense?

Galaxy S getting hot at times? Or is it just mine?

I've had my Galaxy S for a week and of all the reported problems the worst for me is the phone gets hot sometimes in use and while charging. I checked in the application system I downloaded from the android market and it showed temperatures up to 53 degrees celsius. This makes the phone impossible to hold to the ear for a phone call and even internet browsing difficult as it gets too hot to touch.
As a side note unless the carphonewarehouse offer you a 7/14 day return policy don't buy from them. I'm having problems now because of it.
I can't post links to the pictures I took showing this as my account is still new, but it's on picasa web album under galaxy s temperatures and I can send you the link in a message if you want.
Has anyone else experience this problem?
I did notice that the phone can get quite warm at times. But for me even after 1hour in the sun outside the phone wasn't uncomfortable to touch. Much less to hot to hold to the ear.
My phone is charging right now and temp is 44 degrees centigrade. But considering the room-temp is almost 35, its not that bad. I'd rather have my phone becoming a bit warm than it taking forever to charge.
Ive only noticed this when gaming and charging from AC, its not that big a problem for me really, all smartphones suffer from this to some degree. My old Touch HD would get really hot if just wifi was active which is more annoying than this.
Well I have the desire as well and had many smart phones in the past that got warm but never as hot as the galaxy s, nor as frequently when used. It doesn't stay hot, but when it gets hot I can't put it to my ear to phone people. It happens mid call after I've use the phone for awhile.
Well that doesnt sound right, mine doesnt get hot like that, so perhaps yours is faulty?

Same here (USB also)
but other than that the phone remains colder than my HTC Magic.
It does get hot sometimes during calling but not that much.
I just got a new one (old one replaced) and I'm disappointed I'm suffering from this problem also. Mine also reaches up to 53 degrees.
have same problem but....
I downloaded a app "Advanced Task Killer" and killed all the apps that were working in background and i use from time to time, like YMessenger, Mail....
now the phone even if its charging the temp is between 35C and 40C. and maybe the battery will not discharge that fast
well it gets warm here 2 . but i had the same with my iphone 3g .i think its the working of the processor that makes it hot .its the same as with a pc when you run it to its high performance it gets hot 2

that sounds like normal
my old HTC Athena, gets really hot after long sessions of WiFi, 3G, or GPS, and in the SGS i get similar temperature when using the same stuff.
no heat from Bluetooth, or at least it's not noticeable
but ALL cell phones gets hot after long voice conversations.
Some times
Allways when im playing games my SGS gets pretty hot but not in AC .
From the troubleshootig section of the manual -
Your device is hot to the touch
When you use applications that require more power or use
applications on your device for an extended period of time,
your device may feel hot to the touch. This is normal and
should not affect your device's lifespan or performance.
It gets quite hot sometimes. Battery might rise from 33C in idle to around 45C on load.
I think it is the GPS chipset doing really weird calculations. That happened to me in the hardest math classes in college. Whenever I was totally lost and clueless about something during a calculus test I'd always get nervous and hot and sweaty.
Never killed me tho. I think the SGS will be fine even while hot.
I had the VIbrant for a week now.. i can't really say its gotten hot... maybe once.. but its not something severe, because i can't really remember how hot it was...
but from my research... iPhone4 is doing it, people complained they couldn't hold it close to their face while talking..... All the 1ghz SnapDragon's been doing it...there has been reports of the device too hot to even charge....even the underlcocked Acer Liquid E....
I've actually overused it the first few days...i can't really recall this happening to my phone...
Charging with screen on made my SGS rather hot. So now I try to leave the screen off when charging. Come winter that might change, not always a disadvantage to have something hot in a cold car
Seems to get hot in a location around the SIM card area on the phone when charging from USB or AC.
Not worried about it though.
Today try out the Fancy Widget, but later uninstalled it, I already disabled auto refresh everything, but my SGS get overheated and battery down by 50% just in 5 hours.. ......Anyone know why?
charging time
How long does your phone takes to charge ?
Mine takes about 3-4 hour hours on pc usb and about 3 hours on power adapter come with the phone.
My HTC tytn2 with extended battery 2800 only takes 2.5 hours to charge over the pc usb charge.
Mine's getting a little bit hot after trying some 3d games (asphalt i.e, i don't play too much) or clips (few minutes). it seems to have a particular "hot spot" at the portion of the sim card/sd card, the rest of the phone feels quite cool, and i can hold it without any hassle.
Charging the phone at the moment. 42 celcius.
Are you using setcpu? 10 mins ago I was using setcpu and noticed my phone gotten hot suddenly - I didnt do any sort of ocing. Checked the temperature and was shocked to see 53c Uninstalled it and the temperatre returns to a more acceptable level

Is anyone else's Note 4 overheating from regular use?

It's hard to judge as I've mostly noticed the back of the phone getting pretty hot while playing Spider-man Unlimited (specifically in the area under the camera, indicating the CPU and not the battery). I had the same issue with my Note 2 (the phone I had before this one), except that it would only heat up when I played that game and feel normal during other tasks. On my Note 4, it seems to get hot for everything: camera use, internet browsing, etc. I thought it might be because the phone was "settling" in, but it's been about a week now. So far, unrooted and no other tweaks applied.
Anyone else experience this? Does it justify a return to T-mobile? Will they even do it for an issue like this?
I've had mine since Saturday and it's only gotten warm once and that was while playing Asphalt 8. Otherwise this is much better than my old G3 or Nexus 5
Mine used to. Then it cleared up. I can run it for hours with the screen on while I drive for work and it's fine.
Mine did, and after some digging I realized it was the ims service running up the cpu. I disabled wifi calling, restarted and I've been fine since. I havent tested my theory, but I suspect it may be that some services dont recover properly after using ultra power saving mode and need a restart to function properly.
Same problem
Me ! It happened to me, just only after 10 days that I brought the phone. What happend was It was just open the whole night while I was sleeping. It was'nt plugged to a charger nor was it connected to the internet ( via mobile data or wifi). The moment I woke up and reached for my phone, It was really hot!!! Very Very HOT!! I could not even touch it with my bare hands! So I turned it off and decided it would need to be changed because I dont know if the cpu is not good anymore. Although all the apps seem to be working perfectly fine, I just had to give it back to retailer AND ask for a new unit!!. ...
nope, cool as ice. but haven't played any graphically intense games and I am on a custom rom.
Not here. Been very cool even after extended GPS or Clash of Clans use.
I don't have a case on it if that matters.
Which is a very welcome change from my old htc ltevo, which would get almost too hot to hold.
Moved to Q&A.
So I installed CPUTemp from the Play Store and have monitored the temperature doing various tasks (there's an overlay feature which shows you the temp no matter what you're doing on the phone). While it's not surprising to get above 50C while playing a graphically intensive game, I found myself easily getting into the 60C's during regular tasks.
After contacting a T-mobile tech support rep, I was advised to reset the phone and install as few apps as possible for testing. I made sure not to install Spider-man Unlimited this time around. During the night, CPUTemp recorded a temperature spike of over 70C, when the phone was not being used and should have been sleeping!
Unfortunately, xda search and Google have not been very helpful in determining how high a temperature is too high for this device to be operating at.
Anyone have any clues if what I'm seeing is too high (indicating a defective device that needs to be replaced)? Is anyone willing to install CPUTemp and give me an idea of the kind of temperatures you're seeing while doing things like internet browsing, email, phone calls, etc.?
If you are concerned about the temp, you should exchange it. Full Stop.
Regarding the CPUTemp app, I couldn't find that one.
Do you have a link to the app you are using?

If only it were that simple! You basically have to prove to T-mobile that the phone is abnormally hot, but that's hard to do if you don't have a baseline.
By the way, here's the link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.yanyan.cputemp&hl=en
Also, just to repeat: this is an unrooted, unROMed, unmodified in any way Note 4.
I installed that app and tested last night.
Normal temps in 40 - 45 degrees Celsius.
Playing clash of clans it got into the mid 50s.
It never got near 60.
My phone ran hot when I left nfc on all the time . As soon as I turned it off I have been running perfectly cool
I left the CPU Temp running longer.
Temps were between 34 and 57 degrees.
40s for normal use.

I don't know if you're still facing that problem or not but I just wanted to share my experience with your device's predecessor the note 3 because I happen to monitor the temperature most of the time, so while browsing it can get to 53 celsius degrees after a while and loading heavy websites, in games it's mostly in the 50-63 zone depending on how intensive the game is but certain games would push the temperature to 66 and sometimes 69 degrees, I know that the operating temperature of my SOC is 0-70 degrees but it never gets above 70 (Iam using cm11 rom with custom kernel and faux123) keep in mind that you have a faster chip so you might get a bit higher temperatures.
I just use this and I am good.
BAD ASS NOTE 4
Never encountered overheating with the T-Mobile Note 4, but with the AT&T Note 4 I have. Either it has to do with the software (which Firmware you currently have installed) or defective hardware. In the general norm, it also depends what you have running in the background or the particular app being used at the given moment. I had overheating issues with the AT&T Note 4 and nothing was installed. AT&T was a PITA.
Even when playing games my Note 4 doesn't heat up at all. Only when charging. Compared to my S4 becoming incredibly hot.
I would suggest returning the phone. I tested out my Note 4 today for the first time. No games on it. Downloded some apps. It overheated and I was very , very disappointed. Will be returning this unit.
