DL/UL Speed - LG Revolution

From what I've been seeing on a few forums, the Charge gets significantly better 4G speeds than the Rev in the same location.
Few thoughts:
Easy first question...why?
Is is hardware?(if so, end of discussion)
Is it software?
-Is there some type of "cap/limiter" than we can work around with root?
-Is it (somehow) limited by verizon? If so, why does the Charge get all the fun?

It has something to do with the radios. The reception is the same when I'm at home, but at work there is a clear difference, but.......my lg revolution never loses 4g connection compared to my thunderbolt which would bounce in and out of reception. When I'm at home the download speeds are the same 17-20mb + while at work it was 17-20mb down for the thunderbolt and 10-15mb down for the revolution.
The other interesting thing is my upload speads on my lg revolution are the same or better than the thunderbolt and no matter what my signal is, it never drops below 4mb upload.
Side Note, questions need to go in the question or general section. Its pretty frowned apon to post these kind of things in the development section.

edit: Got moved as I was typing this, thank you.

[HELP] Picking a rom

Hi,
I've been running an older version of Simply Honey for the last 8 months or so. I really haven't had time to follow the community like I should be and am hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
Requirements:
1. Most important - GPS accuracy and quickly locking. (lately it seems like my GPS has gone completely crap, hardly ever locks)
2. Cell phone signal (cell phone coverage can be spotty in my home)
3. Battery life (If I can get a good 14 hrs in would be nice)
4. Honeycomb look and feel (I like simple and clean no loud crazy colors)
Nice to haves:
Netflix app working
Please tell me
Post stuff like this in general or Q&A. You're gonna get flamed if you post it in development...
EB70 is the only person I know of who has complete honeycomb theming in his ROMs, so you'll have to stick w/ Simply Honey and Simply Galaxy.
Trigger (Froyo, not the CM7 rom) is way old but has wifi calling which may prove useful at home for you, and I think there's a Honeycomb theme on EDT's website.
Basically, go flash stuff and find something you like instead of asking us all the time. And read the OP so you don't brick yourself.
Wow, 4 posts in 5 years?
any suggestions on GPS?
I don't really have any suggestions because I don't fully know what you like in a Rom. Everyone has different likes and dislikes.. but if you are ever looking for a Rom go to my Vibrant Bible, click the link in my sig. It has all the Roms, kernels, and modems..
Just go through a couple, check out the comments and specs of the Roms.
But according to your preferences in your OP. Don't go with any gingerbread (2.3.3 and up). GPS will work in some of them, but never as good as froyo builds (2.2-2.2.1)
Battery life is better on Froyo as well
Sent from my T959 using XDA Premium App
Miui usually works well for me
I get like 10 second accurate GPS locks in an apartment building but tweaks and such must be implemented and far as battery goes set it to edge moot
3g that'll help if your nowhere with an external battery source

10 second locks in a building??
what tweaks are you setting?
GPS is no issue as far as I'm concerned in any 2.2 froyo rom...I get 5-7m accuracy inside my house under Google maps...turn on satellite view and it'll have me in whatever room I'm in at the time...(only time I've ever had gps completely fail me is Downtown Seattle...) which I don't think anything works in between skyscrapers on all sides)
Wifi calling, I don't use so I don't know..
If you use your headphone jack to make calls (through an fm transmitter or aux-in) in your car, then stay away from ANY 2.2.1 rom...they will not route calls through it for some weird reason.
Team toxic..IMO has about the best froyo rom out there...Toxic 8...with a new ver. just around the corner, tho toxic 8 is SOLID...As far as your honey comb theme, check theme thread, they may already have one...if not, the dev and his theme team are probably the nicest people on xda...put in a req. and I'll bet they'll throw one together, again if they already haven't...
As far as battery...I got like 18-30 hrs on it depending on usage of course...but one thing it does very well is keep your battery at the same +/- 2% level when you are getting your zzz's no setcpu req...
Again, if u want solid gps and very fast UI...get away from 2.3/CM/Miui...it's still buggy. Most likely always will be...
That's my 2 cents

I was using miui limited edition 6 I changed the init.d folder with the one from acid tweaks which I don't advise it drops the frame rate but I went into my moms room and it locked almost instantly mind you we live on the first floor

im not sure how well gps works on GB now but i suggest cm7 or miui, if u want a 100% functioning rom use trigger 3.2 it is all around great
I suggest the ROM listed in my signature. Especially if you want to pick your theme. There are literally over a dozen themes. Oh, and all the other stuff too like battery life and GPS and whatnot.

[Q] app to track modem performance?

Hey all,
First off, big fan of Oxicottin's work over here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1227717
but I live in a part of the country where there's still no feedback from anyone nearby as to which modems perform better/worse with radio signal/data/etc. I've tried plenty of modems myself, but they all seem spotty and it's tough to make any kind of legitimate judgment as to which performs best.
That said, does anyone know of any software out there to track modem performance for us? As in, flash modem X, run an app in the background and let it record signal data as you move throughout your day, then do the same thing tomorrow with modem Y/Z/whatever and then after a week you have some solid information.
If not... any brilliant devs out there who want a new challenge? Seems like a tool that could potentially benefit... everyone.
P.S. Yes, I've searched already with no luck (xda, market, google, etc.).
Best thing you can get is speedtest from ookla on the market. You can run it after flahsing the modem and check upload, download and ping speeds. It also keeps a history to make comparisons.
I second this. I think it would be a really useful tool to audit different modems. Speedtest is nice but it doesn't really tell you how good your overall experience will be. If I had any coding knowledge, I would attempt making an app myself, but sadly that isn't the case. Hopefully someone will turn this idea into reality!
definitely appreciate the tip, i'll give it a try. have to say though, i'm one of those weird old-school people who would rather sacrifice data speeds than call quality/consistency (yeah, i know...). but i guess i can just assume that the best data speed also means best general modem performance (not sure if that's true or not but hey, beggars can't be choosers i suppose.)

baseband flashing

hi guys, can't find answer
1. Saw the officials update there's different basebamd for 3g and 4g, can I flash 4g basebamd onto 3g devices?
2. If it is possible, will I am capable of 4g when travel to America? They also are implementing 4g network in Australia. Read that the basebamd chip integrated 3g and 4g
3. Ram is 512 mb? Only getting 256 in settings
I wrote short cause I know you don't like read long
Thanks
apparently too many people here asking many similar of what so called "noob" questions so that the experienced users don't bother to look at this sub section and let alone answer it.
i am an experienced users myself, and making a rom isn't a problem for me, just tweaking around with stuff and make a backup with CWM, then i can stand up and say "i'm a dev" like ppl on these forums. I mean do you really think you are a dev by just making a few tweaks copied from other sources and post it on the internet claiming it is your own rom? Android is such a popular and open platform that it hardly has an unified development process like such from proprietary software like M$ and Apple.
figure out the answer after a long search and reading on the internet, apparently those things are not addressed anywhere else thats why i have to post the questions in the first place.
1. flashing 4g or 3g does not ruin your baseband, you just cant downgrade it once you flash a newer baseband (same like Apple devices). 4g baseband give you 1 more frequency to use (only available in US)
2. still, it is not possible to use flash 4g baseband and have 4g if you have 3g modem.
only the Tmos DS7 have 4g modem (4g use a lot more power and your devices just cant ultilised all that speed anyway).
3. ram is 512mb but only 256mb available to system, (don't know why?)
one more issues for you to vote:
do you feel very drowsy, dizzy or tired after like 10 or 15 minutes of using the device on 3g mode? i feel really bad and like vomitting, fkuced up bad -_-".
i want to return the thing but given it is such a value for money device (only 200 AUD), i think maybe better to find the cause and fix it. I suspect either:
the screen is too dark and low resolution is the cause
the 3g modem signal too strong and causing headache (had this thing before when using iphone and turn on wifi tether using pdanet)
maybe something wrong with the software, it seems to feel better when i use the US fw versions, and really bad on EU fw -_-".
does any of you have this same problem? lets vote ^^
RAM is 512mb but some of it is reserved for GPU usage.
ppreVic1893
I don't understand why it set aside so many MB of ram for GPU, even though I'm not running any games and just using the launcher to look at the memory available?
Because it internally saves that amount.

Rom advice please

Greetings all,
Before you say try them all here is where I'm at. I have a new M7 with the latest over the air. I live in the sticks with a cap on my internet so that data is kinda precious. I can do this at work however I don't want to be stuck there if something gets botched.
Here's what I hoping to get out of a Rom.
A better battery life.
Volume keys skip songs.
Knock on or swipe on would be cool. I hate the button placement and less than tactile feel of the power button. My wife Moto X has only made that worse for me.
Really that's about it as I do like about evrthing else about the M7.
I've come from an Evo LTE and was on a 5.5 Rom which was great. The battery life was much better than my stock unrooted M7 that I have now.
I'm finally ready to unlock this phone and maybe go s-off however I've read that it's not necessary and also seen otherwise.
I've read myself stupid the last few weeks and only hoping for a small amount of advice
Also it seems that development for this phone is rather slow now. I was surprised coming from the Evo LTE. The Sprint version at least.
Best.

Questions about LG L90

I purchased the LG L90 last week, and am now using it as a daily driver (WOOT WOOT). I have retired my old phone (Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G).
I currently have questions about this phone, I love it overall, but some things are kind of bugging me out a bit:
1. Signal & Service: I understand this device is not LTE capable, but my internet speeds are slower than my Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G (which is a really old phone, in a tehcinical perspective), my speeds on "4G" max out to around ~10-11 Mbps where my old phone usually hit ~15-25 Mbps. Furthermore, my Wi-Fi speeds are slower, for example, when I am at work, my iPod can easily pick up ~42 Mbps, but on the LG L90, it barely its ~15 Mbps. Is this just an issue with the phone? I really want to resolve these issues, as the speed does make a difference for me.
2. GPS: I no longer have a physical GPS, as I figured our phones can do the job now, and my old phone did a great job at it. I don't want to say the L90 is bad, but there is some noticable lag, and at times, the GPS is unable to detect where I am physically located. I live in Seattle, so I figured beign a major metro-city, this should not be an issue, any solutions to resolving this?
3. Current ROM: I am running everything at stock, as I don't want to root just yet (warrenty purposes). That being said, if I were to go on a app and hit the home screen, there are those moments where I can see the lag processing all my apps and widgets, as I only see my wallpaper for a few seconds. There is also a crap load of T-Mobile software that I feel like are draining my battery, any possible way to delete that as well?
4. Battyery Life: Obviously, this phone is a better battery life than other phones, but are their best tips/advice on preventing battery drainage? I am a college student, so I am always on the go, and really woud love something that is stable, to also last me the entire day. Any advice on charge cycles and what not? I usually just charge my phone when I am about to go to bed (around 11 or 12 PM) and unplug it after I wake up in the morning.
Those are all my questions/issues... I really love this phone, and bought a nice case and screen protector and it just looks beyond awesome (better than the iPhone 6 ) I would appreciate any help/support you guys have to resolve these issues for me!
It's good idea to install another ROM like CM11 - it makes a big difference compared to stock one, also could mostly solve your issues, but can't provide any proof on that since I don't use these features at all. I know your warranty is void in exact moment of rooting, but it's not a problem to install stock rom again, and at service most of time these guys are too lazy to check logs
If installing a ROM is seriously the only option, what is the MOST stable ROM out there? I honestly don't want to go back and forth trying different ROMs, as at this point, I really do not have the time to do that... I guess any ROM that is stable, fast, and of course light (so my battery's potential is kept to the max!)
1. Signal & Service: You're comparing a true LTE device to a HSDPA+ device. Not the same. HSDPA+ is not true 4G.
2. GPS: GPS is flaky with this device. On stock or a custom ROM such as CM11
3. Current ROM: The only way to remove TMobile's bloatware is to root the device
4. Battyery Life: No special charging cycles. I charge mine basically the same way you do. Battery life is drastically improved running CM11 instead of stock however.
As for installing a custom ROM. Currently the most stable for the D415 is my ROM which a link can be found in my signature. Myself and many others are using it as a daily driver... but there are some issues that I'm currently in the middle of working out.

I was comparing it to my old phone, which does not have LTE, instead it also has HSDPA+.
I'd love to use your ROM, but I also am looking for something that his minimal issues... perfect for a Daily Driver, and never looking back. I really am not into reinstalling ROMs every few days, like some people do, I'd just like to stick onto one thing and go from there.

I've been working feverishly to fix the issues my ROM has. I've worked out most of the issues but while doing so I managed to introduce a new one. Lol. Go figure. Keep an eye on my thread. Ill hopefully be uploading an update with most issues fixed within the next few days.

Woah, what ROM is that you are using? Battery Life on stock is not bad (At least compaed to my previous phone ) but I was trying to go towards the direction of, what are some good tips/advice to saving battery life and what not.
Question: Are you always on 4G? That is completly insane that you manage to pull off that much battery life!

Ah okay. I will keep my eye out for now, once your ROM is close to 100% (there is no such thing as "perfect" haha) do let me know... I respect all the developers who volunteer their time to create these tools available for us, but I also value my time a whole lot!

I'm on the stock D415 with my personal debloating. I don't use greenify or anything, all I have is xposed and gravity box on. Got rid of all the T-mobile crap and the lookout anti virus And yes for the most part I'm in 4g all the time.
Edit: Almost forgot, always have bluetooth, wifi and high battery location services

Do you mind sharing how you did all that? I currently avoid turning on things like Bluetooth while I drive because I am scared of draining the battery (even though I can always charge it) but I also want to keep the charge cycle consistent.
Another question, any good suggestions for Maps? Is Google Maps the best solution out there? I have tried Waze (personally dislike it) and currently am experimenting with Sygic maps, but want to see other options out there as well...
Bump? Seeking more advice on this!
Also, what is a preferable GPS app around here?

I had D415 last night and tested GPS a bit today with Copilot Live USA. The first test in the morning was terrible. The phone took half hour to get a fix, then was swinging between fix and lost every other minute during my commute to work for more than one hour. The second test was great on the way back to home:good:. GPS took <30s to get a fix, and hardly lost any connection, only a few seconds during the 90-minute trip.
SO what did make the difference? I believe the GPS chip in L90 is not great, but workable. It needs sometime to warm up before starting to work. The first test was running Copilot immediately after turning GPS chip on. There is no warm up time, resulting in disaster navigation. The GPS chip was then turned on the entire day, so the second test was almost perfect.
For D415, turn on GPS chip at least 30 minutes prior to using navigation. This way may keep you away from flaky problem.
