New dedicated WP7 forum. Help getting started. - Off-topic

Hey guys,
I have been an observer on this forum since last 3 years. It has helped me a lot to get me through various issues of multiple phones I've used. And I sincerely thank the entire community for the same.
I own a HTC HD7 now. A WP7. Though there's not much into it right now as everyone awaits the Mango update, it's still getting popular day by day.
We do have a Windows Phone 7 sub-forum here on XDA, but it's mainly developer oriented. Hence, I feel there's a need to make a more consumer oriented forum for the same and that's just what I did.
This is a new forum I launched, exclusively for WP7 users.
I was hoping if any Windows Phone users here will be interested in getting me started with the forums and basic contents to not make it look so empty and hence, attract new visitors.
Do take a note that this is a non-commercial forum and I made this solely for help & support purposes.
And there is no intention to drive people away from this forum. XDA will always be the same huge XDA
So, you may straight away go there and post few helpful things for our new WP7 users. Or get in touch with me via PM or email if you have any suggestions.
Hoping to get positive feedbacks.
Regards,
Jugal

Ghost thread / accusations of keeping a rom from public.

There has been some discussion and rumor about a ghost thread and someone keeping a rom from the public, I've looked into the situation and by this message would like to respond publicly about it. I hope this will clear up any rumors going around and will return this forum to what it should be, a place to discuss and develop.
The "ghost thread":
The thread with subject "How to cook in a OEM Application (package) with uninstall functions?" has been closed by the moderator Duttythroy by request of the original poster. This can be seen in google cache as well as on this screenshot from our pda archive. It has been permanently removed from the forum and can not be restored. This happens often when a thread is closed and doesn't seem to be of much importance to prevent clutter in the forum. To prevent discussions like these in the future I've removed the ability to permanently remove threads from now on.
I have no reason to believe this thread was removed on purpose with malicious intent.
Accusations of keeping a rom from the public:
There have been accusations that a certain member is keeping a source rom from the public by paying people not to distribute it. The person who allegedly got paid to not share this rom does not wish to tell me who did this nor wishes to provide proof for this. As the system shows this user has removed all messages in his PM box there is no way for me to gain access to this information if it ever was in his PM box to begin with. I thus have no reason to believe that a rom is being kept from the public with malicious intent.
About the sharing principle in general:
A lot of rom chefs have complained that keeping a rom from other chefs no matter what the reason is a breach of the sharing principle of this forum and should be punished.
Though we believe that by sharing the community will benefit most it is not a rule, I can not nor do I wish to force people to share. Sometimes there are simply more important issues with a rom that might cause someone not to want to share, think of sources that need protecting or legal issues. I don't think our sharing principle should be enforced with the risk of sources losing their jobs or people getting sued because they shared, this most certainly won't be good for the future of xda-developers.
Best regards,
Flar
p.s. I will leave this thread open for discussion for a while, but do request that you do not post personal attacks here and try to keep the discussion civil.

I respect your choice. Good work to all the chefs, mods and admin.
I respect your choice!
Good work to everybody!
You do what you have to do.
Respect!
Thanks Flar for clearing things up.
I can only hope this has now been resolved and harmony returns to xda developers.
I think Flar is right, but for another reason that she didn't mention, I believe that sharing is good for the community, but sharing means to be willing to share. If you force someone to share something, it's more like stealing.
Can we all be friends again now?
Group hug??
The real question now is this:
Is everything going to return to normal in the forum now?
Or did we lost some chefs/mods?
I guess time will tell...
Since there isn't much that can be done and the Admin did whatever he could and posted the investigation results publicly, we should respect his decision and accept the facts on the face value and not on assumptions. I hope things will getback to normal and the chefs would reopen their ROMs for the public, who love and adore their work.
XDA is a wonderful place for HTC device owners due to the extremely talanted developers and chefs, who are anytime better than the ones wotking at Microsoft and HTC.
So I humbly request all the chefs to re-open their ROMs to the loving and dedicated fans and get back the XDA spirit.
Thank you.
Hello
Thanks for the clear answer and hope that's poeple are going down a bit..
Still unclear if the cookers can share the new rom or not... as the Admin didn't find any proof
Anyway hope that it was just a little storm
Long life to XDA

Exactly.
Personally If I give my word to someone promising not to do something, I will do that, and I expect that also others respect this, and behave coherently with my position.
Clearly as steted in the first post above, when such an extent is reached (like people getting sued or fired) this becomes exponentially more important.
I would like to say that I just joined this community before the thing blew, and as far as I am concerned it seems that things are cooling down, so thanks to the Admins and Moderators for your efforts. (We are civil people, or at least we should behave like it)
Also a thank to all the Chef's, because you can do what I cannot, I appreciate your work, please do not get discouraged and keep it up with the excellent service you provide to the masses here on XDA.
Ciao from Italy.
I am glad there has been progress on the matter.
What happened was sooooooooooo unnecessary and i still believe could have been dealt with better.
I have posted a PM to Flar about how i feel.
XDA is more important than individuals, this must not happen again.
Phew, feel better now
Good speech, but I think everything is the same!
The world is made of corruption, and where it is you can not do anything!
Chef small is nothing, but Big Chef power can not be discussed.
Solution: Leave XDA or lives to it so.
I continue make my roms with love.. Not with money!!!
MaryOne is here to make people happy!!!
Life is beautiful!

It's up to dutty to decide if he wants to discuss this but i think he should do that when he's ready. I've spoken to him yesterday and he's currently very busy with his personal life so it might take some time.
Best regards,
Flar

I think he already made his official answer towards rhis matter.
Hopefully we can all resume normal communication now. The rules have been changed so that it won't be possible for mods to permanently erase threads which offers some official traceability if issues arise.

In all closed threads Dutty have many "lawyers", I think not need. He will surely respond.

Let him answer and not his lawyers.
At least... with your hand to put in... and with your comment and your decision, this makes sense and let all of users to understand this matter.
Now.. i'm really happy and wish all of your cookers to return to our famous website.
Thanks,
KCJ

Introducing Forum Specific Mod

Hi everybody,
Let me introduce myself. I'm M_T_M , your new forum mod for the HTC Wallaby.
I've been on xda-developers for over a year now. Mostly visiting the devices I own and supporting other forums with the experince I've gathered on this great site. Maybe some of you have seen me lately in the forums helping a little.
Now, I'm happy and honored to be appointed to the HTC Wallaby forums to provide mod assistance to all of you in the best way I can to this great community.
I'm here to help you and I expect the same from all of you .
If you experience any other way of approach from members, feel free to contact me through PM, or report the post by using the "!" button in the post.
Additionally, I want to let you know that I'll be doing some forum maintenance (cleaning threads addressing an already discussed topic or an off topic, moving threads or posts to proper sections) for making it easier to all of you get the information you are seeking and keeping the forum clean.
Cheers
thanks my friends

Thinking of leaving xda :(

Well guys, I am seriously thinking of leaving xda. All of my posts are being moved from development to general "lufc" stating that they have nothing to do with development. Granted 1 or 2 of them dont, but not all of them. And he is leaving up posts in there from users that posted stuff since before I even owned this device. I will stay on here til I get CWM running. But after that I am thinking of leaving for good.
Dont take this the wrong way. I mean a couple of you are giving some useful insight, but honestly I am working on this myself and I only got 19 thanks on here and no donations. I mean, im not asking by any means for anyone to fork up anything for this especially since I have not finished the first and most essential need for the streak before any deving can be done. But with that being said, after I get CWM completed, there is really nothing holding me here since you guys wont even see my posts when they get moved half way across the universe.
Sorry guys. And then again, I might just stay, who knows

This issue has been raised in the past, and it was determined by the Senior staff that any threads in [Device] Development must either contain a released product (i.e. ROMs), or tweaks/patches (i.e. registry fixes). Any threads that do not meet these requirements will be moved to General. All questions will be moved to Q&A is it exists for a particular device.
@OP: Creating a thread like this is not the correct channel to discuss actions taken by a Forum Moderator. Going forward, please reply to the automated PM you received as each thread was moved, or send a PM to any Senior Moderator, and we will take a look.

Counter Productive Posting rules

Feel free to delete this / moderate this but things are starting to get a little frustrating.
I've been around the modding scene for over 15 years, not just phones but most consoles, tv boxes etc. I know how to search threads for information, and spend a lot of time reading tutorials, applying methods from one technology to another etc.
As a result, I don't need to post frequent... hey me too... or aren't Samsung BS type responses. However, because I moderate my posting to only the essentials, when I do have relevant feedback about problems encountered with custom roms etc, I am unable to do so because I haven't spammed the forums with "Hi... My names Barbie will you be my friend " posts.
Yes I could / can PM the authors / dev's but that flies in the face of having a community in the first place and drives development underground.
Anyway... rant over......... XDA is a fantastic resource and top notch community, :good:

Every single user, new or old has the ability to post their question in the Q&A subforums. Or perhaps you would prefer wading through 100's of spam posts in development of members trying to sell you iPhones or escort services. There are many reasons for the 10 post restriction...not least of all for the 10000 new users joining everyday and want to jump into development in a ROM thread and ask "How do I root?". You could very easily also help a few members with their questions in Q&A rather than post a thread like this.
Have a nice day Barbie
Cheers from Ken

[HELP] Question regarding the highly viewed thread

Hi,
I see threads here that appear one next to each other - one with 30 views and the other ones are with 700k views. How does it work? Are there times people visit XDA forums more? What do people do to get such high views rates?

Indeed there are. Thread views are largely generated by the interest in the thread topic, with members visiting the same thread several times per day. So what you're seeing is very common.

TY! I didn’t realize people were visiting a thread a couple of times a day.
I have two more questions please if may I:
In the apps threads, what are the people who visit them more than once are looking for? @[email protected] I thought that only the ones who create the threads are interested to see more traffic and so they are the only ones who visit their own threads more than once.
And the second question: who are the people who use XDA Forums? I’m not exactly aware of different societies among people overall.
Are those people mostly from US? Those forums are in English but US AFAIK is more of an IOS country. What do people find in Android? For me it’s a professional matter. I don’t know how others perceive Android. When I was a computer enthusiast (tech hacker) Android did not exist and I was concentrated in my university and high school studies. Ages I guess are Gaussian between 20-40. But I’d love to know more about the demographics here a little bit if possible . Up to the permitted level of course.
And I thought of one last question that interests me if possible, once again I’m just curious don’t judge me if my questions sound weird, I’m just learning. In the conversations that flow here in the topics, what makes people react to something that someone said? For instance why does a person reacts to an app that has been published in here instead of planning a trip abroad during that time or traveling between the cities on the public transport for instance? What makes XDA win his or her heart in that battle?
I'll try and answer your questions as best I can.

There are various reasons for this, mostly interest and participation in any thread are why members visit a thread a few times a day since discussions and questions are always fluid depending on various opinions and solutions.

XDA members total around 10 million world wide from virtually every country you can think of, and range in ages from 12 - 80+ as seen in my travels for 11 years on the site. And do not assume the US is just IOS country, that might get you some interesting replies on the forums. While there are many IOS users on this site as well, the predominant discussion has always centered around Android and the modification of devices since it's just plain fun to do. If you want to know more about XDA's history, have a look here.

The only answer I can give on that one is, human nature and freedom of choice. That is akin tho the old "Ford vs Chevy" discussion that I have seen all my life in the US over 62 years. People like what they like and do what they do because they can plain and simple. And that's about the extent of my philosophical knowleged. Hope I annswere your questions, and have a great day.
