O2X P990h (850mhz UMTS) - LG Optimus 2x

Hi guys,
I've searched the O2X forum regarding 850mhz UMTS (HSPA) and found nothing so far. Does anyone here have the O2X P990h model which supports the 850mhz UMTS band? The only thing I can find is that the G2X supports 850 but has the model number P999.
I'm currently tossing up between the Atrix and O2X (I use the Australian NextG network btw). The locked bootloader on the Atrix sucks and coming from a S-Off'ed Desire I really want custom roms etc., but the O2X doesn't have 850mhz support which is a must for me, at least until now.
Since then I've stumbled onto these:
http://www.mobicity.com.au/lg-optimus-2x-nextg.html
They appear to be in a lot of other online shops as well, has anyone actually got one and can confirm normal O2X mods/roms work on the P990H?

Hi, i get 'h' on mine above the signal bars which i am guessing is hspa. (I'm in the UK on orange.) Or am I getting confused with something different?
Sorry if i am talking about something different.

This is on czech LG site for O2X:
2G network: GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
3G network: UMTS 900/1900/2100, HSDPA 7,2Mbps / HSUPA 5,7 Mbps
so i guess 850Mhz for UMTS is really not supported, at least not on EU model (but i doubt the specs will be different elsewhere on P990)

Actually he's talking about one listed as "LG P990H Optimus 2x 850/1900 "
It's on negrielectronics web site as well as a few others... but it seems impossible to find out any information on it. I myself am also interested..

No, completely different. The standard Optimus model number is P990. There is a 2nd model called the P990H which has 850mhz UMTS support (apparently at least).
So nobody has ever bought or used one of these phones?

where do you see a 850 umts version ?

Fido's LG P990hn is an 3g 850/1900/2100 phone. I'm curious that is it able to flash a p990's third party rom or not.

Don't take this as a definitive answer, but yes, it should be.
As you can see from the included screenshot, the ROM itself (via Hidden menu) lets you select 850 bands for both GSM and WCDMA, even though the radio doesn't support WCDMA-850 on the regular P990, which the screenshot is from. (This is from the new official Gingerbread, but it was the same on Froyo.)
You may run into other problems of course, like the ROM not liking your baseband, which is the one thing you probably shouldn't replace with stuff from the P990.
As stated, I cannot say for sure, but I think you can try without damaging your phone. (Or get someone else to try it on theirs ;-)) Which is my way of saying you probably should get a second opinion. And a third.

Cant you just get a G2X? Theyre 850 i think. Or you could join the dark side and use optus

Just saw this thread and wanted to clarify for anyone else who might stumble upon it.
P990HN from Fido does support 850Mhz and also works with all the custom roms/kernels for P990

I'm brazilian.
In Brazil, UMTS is 850/2100mhz
(990h model)

here in mexico 850 its the 3g band, the 8xxx baseband + canadian ril makes the phone p990h, but the radio its not capable on p990 celphone, you can just load miui or cm7 and load the 8xxx baseband and the canadian ril then you can upgrade your phone

I have the LG Optumus 2x - P990.
This phone has a software lock on the UMTS 850Mhz Band.
Does anyone know how to root this phone and unlock it?
My phone will sometimes connect to 3G here in Canada, but then it reverts back to Edge Network. If I turn my phone Off/ON, it will usually connect to 3G then after a few mintues goes to Edge. Certian parts of the city I'm in will connect to 3G at all times, it's very strange.

I did not know (and still confused) about what I was doing when I flashed my Fido LG P990hN with T-mobile CyanogenMod7. I can operate on Rogers network, but its not stable. Im new to this so I don't know what questions to ask - I just keep reading forums and help files. Michael

I have the P990h model bring from Spain, and in the box says that works with 850/1900/2100 WCDMA, and all the roms from P990 works normally, right now im on CM7

ok guys, here what I found.
I started separate thread in Q&A section:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1521105
I'm in Ontario, Canada on Rogers. Got LG o2x from buddy who bought it in Europe. Then my mystery started. At home I was getting 3G and H, but at work (about 50km away) was getting only EDGE. But buddy with iPhone had 3G all the time. I got suspicios. Tried everything - flashing different ROMs, RILs, BBs... Same sh...it.
Then, my another buddy bought used LG 3D (Thrill) which was sold by Rogers (i.e. official Canadian edition) and asked me to root it. I did and tested - he had 4G (same as H, I guess) all the time. WTF!!!
So quest continues...
I found hidden menu in both phones. There I could force phone to use exact band I wanted. And mystery was solved...
So I forced:
GSM850 - my o2x got Edge; buddies: 3D Edge (the same)
GSM1900 (GSM PCS on phone) - my o2x: G; buddies: G
WCDMA1900 (UMTS_Band_II) - my o2x: H; buddies: 4G
and now...
WCDMA850 (UMTS_Band_V) - my o2x: NOTHING; buddies: 4G
So I made the conclusion that European o2x has WCDMA850 band disabled somehow. It explaines why I have H at home (big city where H is on WCDMA1900) and only Edge at work (small town and H is on WCDMA850).
Now I'm trying to find out if it's possible to unlock/enable WCDMA850 band on this phone. I read that Samsung has hidden menu where you can select bands you want to use.
Does somebody have and idea if there is something like that in LG?
Thanks!!!

There is, but it won't do you much good, as this is, to my knowledge, a hardware limitation. The P990 can not use the 850Mhz band, the P990h and P990hN can.
If you still want to try you'll find band selection in the hidden menu. Dial 1809#*990#, select Modem Setting/Band selection.

That's exactly what I did - went into hidden menu and selected each band one by one and then checked status in Engineering Mode of Modem Settings.
Now I have next idea: all this experiment I did while having "canadian" baseband 823. And i had WCDMA850 line in Band selection (but it didn't work).
Now I'm wondering if I still have WCDMA850 entry if I put "european" baseband 725. This will be my next step tonight. Because if I have WCDMA850 in 725 bb then I would assume that phone CAN handle it but it's disabled somehow.
What do you think?
I just thought that for manufacture like LG is easier to make just one universal phone and then limit available bands using software (or firmware)...
Thanks for ideas!!!

You'll find the (non-functioning) 850 band on European basebands as well.
I'm no electronics engineer, but I think there's more involved in supporting a specific frequency than just the baseband. (I think each frequency needs some kind of dedicated amplifier among other things.) The chip itself is capable of supporting 850 I think, but not the rest of the "supporting" electronics. I may be completely wrong though.
Basically the P990h is the revision which enables the 850 band. I think trying to get it to work on the regular P990 is futile, but you're of course free to try anything you want.

If I remember rightly, in the O2X review by Aandtech, they say that the 850 option is there in software but not there in hardware (on European version). So even though you can select it, it won't work. (At least that's according to the initial review)

[Q] My Craziest must dumbest idea ever... will it work?

well ive been having issues with 900Mhz band and 3G (my phone company supports 3G under 900mhz only and i don't get on the 3G fun for some reason ): in my weak moments i got this idea of flashing a telus(canada) "sbf" on my milestone and going along with another company that user same 3G bands as telus <.<
will this idea work? any advice?
No matter what you flash, you can't change phones hardware. If you are using north american Milestone (purchased from Telus) you will have 850/1900/2100 bands. If you have european MS, you will have 900/2100.
However if you are not using the right radio firmware, your phone won't see 3G or will have troubles at best.
No matter what firmware you flash, make sure you flash the right radio files for the hardware you have.

You've bought a phone that isn't compatible with the Telus network.
It will only run on it's 2G frequencies, and Telus don't support 2G data (from what I can tell).
From what I've read, the O2X is compatible with HSDPA 1900, which Telus carries...
Yes the O2X does support UMTS 1900, but I don't think it's that simple unfortunately.
You might find that they don't use 1900 in your area, and you need 850 (as this is usually more popular), how you can find out I don't know. If you look at your signal type, I suspect it will be GSM
Right now it's saying GPRS... I'm in Montreal, which should mostly be using 1900 frequency, as it is the better one for cities...
Did you set up Telus APN?

Depends how you define better, I would have said 850 is better due to penetration.

Yes, I tried using the info provided by Telus :
APN: sp.telus.com
Proxy server: 74.49.0.18
Port: 80
but it doesn't seem to work...
I'd recommend you phone Telus and explain the problem to them.
I know on previous phones I've owned (non Android) I've been sent a text with settings in from my carrier. They might be able to do something similar, or at least point you in the right direction.
Have you used that SIM before or is it a new one?

It's the SIM I used on my Motorola Milestone before.
I called them, and they just told me to remove the battery and put it back on, in order to push new info in the phone... and reminded me that they don't guarantee data access with unlocked phones, which sucks.
Could it be a baseband issue ? I have 0405 now...
I found on the Telus site (can't link because I'm a new member)
they say:
Check device compatibility:
Your device must be compatible with our 4G network. If you have a non TELUS device that uses HSPA technology, it should be compatible with our mobile network. Check your device's compatibility.
Lock Status:
Your non TELUS device needs to be unlocked to work on the TELUS network. What does this mean?

Further advice is to take it into store and ask if they can unlock it. I'm assuming that's the problem, as your connection details posted earlier are correct.
The phone is unlocked (bought it that way). I had a second (very long) service call with them, during which we tried a lot of things, but without luck.
I also tried to change basebands, 0502 broke my cellphone connection altogether and 0218 works as 0405 did.
We already know what the problem is. You have a 2G signal and Telus doesn't support 2G data.
Networkinfo widget tells me I have an UMTS signal...

As I said in OP, at home (50 km from work where my buddy gets 3G and I don't) I get 3G and H. So my phone is capable. As far I tested 725 and 218 BB+RIL. Tomorrow will try 823 (can't flash BB at work).

iPhone 4 3G supports: 3G Network HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100
2x: 3G Network HSDPA 900 / 1900 / 2100
So yes we're missing the 850mhz band, which is unfortunate because the best provider in Australia uses 850mhz 3G, I only get 2G EDGE when I put a Telstra sim in my phone.
Ok, quest continues...
I tested 823 bb - same thing...
Yesterday my another buddy got used LG P925 (3D) and asked me to root it. So I did.
And when I tested his his phone with my sim at the same spot - I had 4G symbol and Speedtest showed ping around 150 and download speed around 2000 kbs. My LG P990 is on Edge and has ping close to 1000 speeds around 200... WTF?
Here the only difference :
my phone is from UK and his is specifically Canadian (we are in Canada ).
But I checked LG UK site and it says that phone has 850-900-1800-1900 bands, exactly as my buddies.
My buddies P925 says UMTS network, while mine only HSPA... Does it makr a difference?
I really like my phone but being on Edge kills me... I guess I will return this phone and try to find used Canadian one...
Any ideas?
ADDED: I read and read and read and finally read about European phones not having 850 frequency enabled... I guess this is my case - my phone is from Europe and buddies - Canadian. So I found how to get to hidden menu on stock ROM and modify preffered frequencies. But is there any way to get there in CM7? Ideas ???
ADDED 2: ok, looks like European o2x doesn't have WCDMA850 enabled... Here my experiment:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23588400&postcount=16
Is there any way to enable WCDMA850 band through some menu? (I've read that Samsung has such feature)
Thread can be closed...
Hi everybody!
I think thread should be closed - I find the answer.
This European phone doesn't support WCDMA850, only 900, 1900 and 2100. So in my case in the little Ontario town I didn't have 3G connection because Rogers (provides) has only CDMA850 band for 3G...
Only big cities have 3G in WCDMA1900 band...
Just all of you know.
With best regards!

P970 vs. P970h

What's the difference? I am guessing the regions they are sold in, but are there also hardware/radio differences?
There are no differences.

Not sure where they sale p970 I think it's europe, the p970h is for latin america and gets 3G in 850/1900/2100 mhz while p970 gets 3G in 900/1700/2100 mhz

the QuadBand (850/900/1800/1900MHz) is for the GSM 2G communications, and the HSDPA (also known as 3G) works on 900/1700/2100 for p970 and 850/1900/2100 for p970h that's why you can't import an european phone to latin america but will not be able to use 3G, 'cause most operators use 850/1900 bands, wich european phones don't use, that's the difference, but don't trust me, look it up!
Also that's why roms usually developed for europe causes so many crashes in Latin America while having 3G enabled
UMTS Europe use bands 2100/900MHz. Ther are a lot of mexicans using Zeus Rom (by Huexxx) based on V20N Europe Open and V20o Spanish, and nobody have reports problems with the radio in Mexico. See http://www.htcmania.com/showthread.php?t=321012.
Also some from Argentina, without problems. May be the phone is also quadband in UMTS.

I have asked around and most of them having no data plan, experience no problems, some restrict to 2G due to battery managment so this also hide problems, only few people have notice this bug and it's not exclusive to OB I've experience it on Galaxy Ace and others, and also I can tell you that the two main carriers in Mexico use 3G in 850/1900, I have lived this issues, and I have check the specs sheets for P970 and P970h, I'm not making stuff up, I'm just trying to help other Latin American users who have no idea why their devices behaves like that ( constant FC screen flashes, battery drain for no reason, etc)
And for 3G it's not QuadBand, I'll let you the official mexican spec's sheet where you can see in System / WCDMA (also known as 3G) that it only has 850/1900/2100 Mhz
http://www.lg.com/mx/celulares/mostrar-todos/LG-P970.jsp
And the spec's for UK shows the "same phone" but with 3G in 900/1700/2100
http://www.lg.com/uk/mobile-phones/lg-P970-optimus-black
that's the difference
Thank you for the info! Your are the first from which I hear that, but you give also reasons why this can be the case. Of course, your info can help the few people who experiment this kind of problems.
Here some Data:
- From the German LG-site P970: Quadband (850/900/1800/1900MHz) + UMTS (2100/900MHz) + HSPA 7.2/5.7
-From the British LG-site P970: 850/900/1800/1900 – Edge 900/1700/2100 – HSPA 7.2/5.76
There seems to be a bandwidth chaos in LG´s information.
From http://www.gsmarena.com/lg_optimus_black_p970-3704.php:
2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network HSDPA 900 / 1700 / 2100 HSDPA 900 / 1900 / 2100
That sounds about right (or reads hehe) since all the sources you're quoting have info for P970 version, as I told you the QuadBand is present in both versions but it works for 2G, all those have 3G in 900/1700/2100, (except gsmarema, but it's not official source, so it could be wrong) but check the P970h where the bands are 850/1900/2100
Neither GSMarena nor LG offer reliable information. It seem that the p970h doesn’t support 900MHz in HSPA and the p970 without “h” doesn’t use the 850MHz HSPA band. But it only seem due LG´s information doesn’t be trustworthy or complete.
I think the baseband capabilities are only determinable by measuring. Maybe some in the web have done this
I don't know why, but I've read this a lot, European people find it hard to believe that LG (or any other mobile brand for that matter) could make two or more differents versions from one phone to replace only the modems, but believe me, they do, you can find it on most phones, like when I had the Galaxy Ace, the model is S5830, but for LatAm is S5830L, and the difference is again the 850 band, and so goes on with several others
Its not a matter of believe or from coming of a specific region in the world, it’s a matter of facts. And the LG’s homepages aren’t a reliable source.
I believe your explications and your experience, but to isolate the source of problems is need of facts. There is still no probe, that the p970 doesn’t support the 850MHz and the p970h the 900MHz band. Its a hardware thing or rom related?
It's a matter of hardware no doubt!
Brasilian specs like mx but named P970 (without "h") http://www.lge.com/br/celular/aparelhos/LG-smartphone-P970.jsp and manual of brasilian vivo provider. This issue gets even stranger.
Regards
So funny 'cause in Mexico's page it also name it with out the "h" the h it's only found in the phone it self, and I know for a fact that brazilian is p970h
Your are right, the brasilian technical name is p970h.
Now does this make a difference to what rom. Dwnload?? Since i have a p970h. Also i have 2.2.2 what is the highest official upgrade and what is the best way to get the highst. Upgrade whilst letting the phone still be useable on a daily basis????

Where does it say this? If this is taken from the Settings -> About Phone, it only reflects the ROM currently on the device. My phone is the actual P990hN from Fido, and was originally listed as LG-P990hN; however, with the current ROM, the model is listed as just LG-P990. What do you see on the label under the battery? It will tell you the actual model of the device.

I believe P990HN is the Canadian version of P990. Did a little search for you, and it seems that the major difference is its inclusion of the 850 Mhz band, which the European P990 lacks.

The first post there gives you links to guides on how to root.
That thread says not to ask questions on it. I think the final question is. How do i figure out if my phone is optimus 2x or the g2x. It does say t-mobile on the phone so i don't know if optimus 2x also comes with t-mobile.

As far as I am aware, only G2x are TM-branded. So, in your case, I can see two possibilities: replaced glass (wrong carrier logo), or replaced casing (wrong label). Does the IMEI on the label match the actual IMEI of your phone? If yes, I'd say the model on the label (P990hN) is your answer...

If it doesn't say P999, it's not a g2x. Someone probably just swapped digitizers.
Just do a IMEI reverse check.
Use this link but replace the IMEI part with your actual IMEI. (dial *#06# in dialer to display it).
Code:
http://csmg.lgmobile.com:9002/csmg/b2c/client/auth_model_check2.jsp?esn=[COLOR="Red"]IMEI[/COLOR]
After that you'll get shown your phone model and newest official LG update
Mine looks like this:
OK **** LGP990 APRTBK 103KPFX144283 20110329 V20S_00 http://csmg.lgmobile.com:9002/swdata/WEBSW/LGP990/APRTBK/V20s_00/V20S_00.kdz http://csmg.lgmobile.com:9002/swdata/WEBSW/LGP990/APRTBK/V20s_00/V20S_00.kdz GLOBAL/GLOBAL N N EI GSM

is possible flash P990 firmware to P990hN phone?
thanks!
Easiest way: Put in a Rogers, Bell, or Telus SIM (or their low-cost subsidiaries like Fido, Virgin, and Koodo) and if it gets 3G signal, it's a P990.
If it's a P999, it will be locked into 2G only on Rogers/Fido, while the other carriers will not have any signal period.
If you try a Wind/Mobilicity/Videotron SIM, a P990 will refuse to have signal, while a P999 will have 3G signal.
This is because the P990 supports 850/1900/2100 frequencies, while the P999 only has 1700/2100. 2100 is not used in North America. 1700 is exclusive to T-Mobile USA and Wind/Mobilicity/Videotron.
edit: didn't realize this was old LOL.
