[BUG] WiFi Portable Hotspot with Ad-Hoc supported ROMs - Nexus S Android Development

Hello everyone,
I just received my Asus Transformer (WiFi Only) and wanted to connect it to my Nexus S portable hotspot.
The Transformer found the hotspot network and even connected to it but I wasn't able to open web pages or even sync my google account.
I tested this on 2 Transformer units, Galaxy S II phone and a Nexus One (with CM7 which also can't generate a working hotspot network).
After several tests I've discovered every ROM that has Ad-Hoc support behaves the same - generate hotspot network that you can connect to but can't actually use. Also tested all WiFi tether apps on Market - all beacon ad-hoc networks, which Stock Android 3.1 can't find&connect to.
I tested all Ad Hoc supported ROMs: CM7 latest nightly, CM7.0.3 stable, MIUI latest, Oxygen and SupeAosp8.6. Finally flashed a stock 2.3.4 ROM and the hotspot feature worked perfectly. Also tested it on both Nexus S radios (KB3 and KD1).
Would love if someone can locate and fix this bug...
Probably something in the wpa_supplicant file or with DNS resolving.
Thank you!
EDIT: A solution for my specific issue - Will allow Ad Hoc support on the Transformer.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1093778
Still won't solve the main issue when you have to root and add Ad Hoc support for both devices.

I also encountered this problem.
What I did was download an App called: Wireless Tether for Root Users
I would use it anyway because it tracks data usage and enables security options.

Thanks for replying.
As I wrote in the OP, I've tried every WiFi tether app on the Android Market, including wifi tether for root users. All uses adhoc networks which stock Android devices can't see and connect to.

what solves it for me is adding dns host ip on the client computer
it works fine when you do that

I use PDAnet for tablets with my TF - it works really well. You can download it from the market.

You used it to connect your tablet to a hotspot network generated from your CM7/SupeAosp8.6, Oxygen or MIUI ROM?

Thanks, we did it as well on a Linux machine for testing but you can't set static IP on Honeycomb... at least not on stock version.

Regarding PDA for tablets, reading the app description on the Market I understand it uses Bluetooth sharing and not wifi tether. Also, it clearly says it only works for browser, email and YouTube apps. Hardly a solution.
I'll work with a Linux expert today to see if he can solve this. If so, I'll upload the files here.

Yes, I misread your op, hands up; I'm guilty as charged. However, you should perhaps be a little less dismissive of people trying to help you. Also it may have helped if you had posted your question to the correct thread in the first place (that's hardly difficult is it!).

LOL did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed today?
I REALLY wasn't trying to dismiss you... AT ALL!
Your solution will probably be great for many other people but as I mentioned in the OP, I'm looking for a specific solution for the WiFi tether, which is an option coming with stock Android and doesn't require users of any other apps or system knowledge.
As already mentioned, I'm working with a linux guy to check maybe he can make both things work - Ad-Hoc and stock Android WiFi Tether option.
If the XDA moderators think this should go into Q&A/General they can move it. I believe it should be here as it is relevant for all ROM developers here.

I agree with you buddy. I am looking for some pure soul that can develop a patch so I can connect my rooted Nexus S to an Ad-hoc wifi computer connection...

Wired tether connection issues

I'm running Ivan's .8t2 and was able to get the wireless tether to work with no problems.
Wired tether is a different issue. I've got the latest HTC Sync loaded which is supposed to have the appropriate driver for XP sp3 I just can't get it to connect or even recognize the "eris network". The app fire up fine on the Eris, but it's like I'm missing some network setup on the XP.
I've done a google search and have not found anything too helpful. Mostly iPhone to Mac stuff.
Thanks in advance.
I've been trying to figure out why its not working. the kernel may need to be patched, and I know the app is supposed to let you know if the kernel is incompatible. I'll look into the kernel issue, but be patient with me as I'm still learning this dev thang!
in the meantime I have been running the KaosLegendary 0.8 rom and use mobile network sharing under wireless and network settings.
Thanks. FYI, there is no such setting I can find with Ivan's ROM.
Sent from my Eris using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
yeah, you wont find that feature on an Eris based rom, I'm gonna see if I can add it tho.
on any phone, root or not, you could just download the "easy tether" app from the market. does wired tether for free, and is really really easy to set up.
Thanks to both for the help. The easy tether did the trick.
I had a feeling there was something missing from the laptop's side.
My Mom thanks you, too. Now the laptop can be taken to her place so she can Skype with her grand daughter and great grand daughter.

z4root was pulled from the AT&T market over the weekend.
You can check this out: ponack.net (can't link cause I'm new here, sorry)
Gives you rooting instructions and (if wanted) instructions for installing the Cognition ROM...of course you can substitute your fav ROM instead.

Download the Samsung one click root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=739304&page=25 and download google's Wifi tether app or Barnacle wifi from market. If you can't find it in the market, you can use Market Enabler from the market to fool the market into thinking you are on TMobile.
Anything new on the tether without a root. Can't seem to find any of the programs that people talk about.
Thanks
dont mean to hijack but it has to do with captivate tethering..
i have assonance 5.2 and have tried tethering to my pc. seems to work but what i am really looking for is a way to tether and use my PC'S connection on my PHONE so i dont have to dwindle my data plan. ive been looking for a while actually on how i could 'reverse tether' but i guess im blind.
i know, its unbelievable isnt it?
Are you trying to tether from a laptop or pc

yea it should b possible but not very usefull since most pc's connect through wifi anyways so it would probely b more efficient to use wifi on your phone through your home network by installing a wireless router unless you are hard wired in which case u would need some kind of mobile hotspot type of program using wifi or bluetooth also usb of some sorts
problem solved with the newest version of connectify.
edit: well, my problem anyways.

[Q] PdaNet Tablet (beta) android to android with bluetooth

Has anyone else tried this app?
Im on tnt lite 4.4 and when I connect my gtab freezes.
I had the app working for a couple minutes at most.
Ive tried different browsers, but nothing, next I might try a different rom
and see if that works.
I have to try and use this app because I dont have root on my mobile yet.
Edit: i changed my rom to G harmony v2.4.
It connects but force closes on me, better then freezing up my tablet though.
Works for about five minutes, sometimes it doesnt want to connect at first either.
Edit: using cyanogenmod 7.0.3 this app works.
Currently connected to my mobile.
No freezing or force closes.
Here is the market description
This is a tablet version of the extremely popular PdaNet software. It allows you to share the Internet access of an Android device with another Android device through Bluetooth. You should install this application on both the tablet and the phone. Then run client mode on a tablet and server mode on a phone. No rooting required. Connection speed should be very fast if your phone has good data service. PdaNet works by setting the web proxy server on your tablet and route web requests to a Bluetooth DUN service. That means only applications that use web connections will work. On Honeycomb devices PdaNet supports Browser, Gmail and Map. For Android 2.2/2.3 devices PdaNet only supports the Browser app. We understand this solution is not ideal but it is really the only way to tether an Android tablet due to OS restrictions. This application is completely free and we hope it will be useful to you.

Tethered via WiFi is just one option but I think the whole point was to do it via Bluetooth.
I can't say for sure if BT has a better/stronger connection than WiFi, but it's something I've been yearning to find out.

I probably wouldn't use this if I could tether over wifi though.
This app is beta and on froyo and gingerbread you can only get internet on
Your browser app.
But it's free and I need to root my mobile.
I've been traveling and dont have a computer right now.
I saw it in the market on my Evo, but NOT on my Gtablet. How can I get it from my not rooted Evo to my rooted Viewsonic GTablet?
Can you backup your apps on your phone?
should be able to put it on your sdcard, then transfer it to your gtablet and install.
Just tried it, it pairs but does not connect via bluetooth. I'm rooted as well. From my understanding android had widespread issues connecting via bluetooth as a server/client to another android device.
Using an Apple or Windows based phone I have no issues.

I don't suppose anyone knows if PDANet for iphone supports bluetooth? WIFI takes away WAYYYYY too much battery life.

Google's WiFi Tether app

Has anyone been able to get any version (2.0.7 or 3.x beta) of Google's WiFi Tether app working on their rooted Droid Bionic? Link to app
It didn't seem to work for this guy at the end of the video: Link
For me tethering is critical for work and I don't want to activate my Droid Bionic (which is coming tomorrow) until it can be confirmed working. Will keep using Thunderbolt for now... I can also imagine this is a huge issue for many other users.
However, I am aware that Motorola devices need some kind of device profile in the "Change Device-Profile" option in the settings of that app, has anyone played around with that, maybe choosing the Droid X or other Droid?
Any feedback greatly appreciated...
I hope you find a solution soon, I also have the same problem
Don't bother until a custom ROM comes out that can "hide your ass".
Since it is for work, paying for the monthly tether should be a business expense.
I tried some of the work-arounds on the net... barnacle did not work for me... choosing the droid x profile in device setup at least showed my wifi hot spot, but I could not obtain an IP... I had also noticed errors about dhcp in the log.

exactly, in the mean time your going to be stuck using PDAnet and a USB cable.
Got it, rooted it, figured it out. Use version 2.0.7. Change the LAN option to 10.10.1.x
Also it only works in ad-hoc mode but at least its a start. I'm sure updates will fix it.

Also try this with the 3. beta if you don't mind

Can't get 3 beta to work at all but it doesn't offer anything other than ad-hoc mode also. Also doesn't show data going through on the app. But hey at least it works.
Can anyone confirm the 2.0.7 wireless tether working?
not working
2.07 not working for me even using the 10.1 network. clients fail to obtain an IP address.
Same problem here - wifi tethering not working...
The newest 3.x didn't work for me. Has anyone tried manually setting the client's IP/Gateway/DNS? I don't remember what the dhcp issued on my incredible, otherwise I'd go grab my laptop and mess around with different static settings.

It takes a long time I noticed. Wait for the little blue notification icon to appear that shows the device is connected. Can take as long as 3 minutes sometimes but it works for me I assure you. The key thing is the 10.10.1.x network which is still unblocked because VPN's can use that network, anything other than that won't work.
I can't get wifi tehthering to work but just using the phones built in usb tehering option works and does not send me to a page to subscribe for tethering. Don't know why this works but if I try the built in wireless tethering it says I have to sign up. EDIT Was working on launch day but tried again today and won't work so I guess the system wasn't updated the first day I tried it.
Hi,
I found way to enable Hotspot without Verizon Provisioning. I used SQLLite Editor to modify settings.db for "Settings Storage" application ( com.motorola.android.providers.settings ). Set entitlement_check to 0 and reboot the phone.

I just tried this. It appears to be working. I was able to connect and browse from my laptop. Now the question is, does Verizon still know I'm tethering even though I'm not paying to tether?
I second. Works for me a well, with no warning or pop up. Cudos to you my good man

Just did it and all seems fine so far.
btw, WOW. Ive never poked around the databases like that. Everything from the hdmi overscan to wifi info is in there. That is So cool.
Works for me too! However, only works properly with WPA security. If Hotspot is set to "open", you can connect but get no internet...
