[Q] Coming up on my two weeks with the revolution Should keep or trade for Charge? - LG Revolution

All,
Almost two weeks ago on Fri. I received my Revolution. purchased from VZW on line.
Over all I like it, but there are a few IMO major issues that make me think of returning it and getting a Droid Charge.
The first and most troubling is that fact that even though I'm in a 4G area I have some apps that can not connect via 4g or even 3G. They need Wifi to connect even though they are supposed to use any connection.
I tried several of these on the TB and Charge in the VZW store. and they failed on the TB, but the Charge ran them no problem. I plan on trying them again tonight on the TB and Charge to see if the original results have changed.
Now my major issues with the Charge are the form factor/build and the hard buttons. as well as the UI (which can be changed).
I hate having to pay for 4G that only works on occasion.
Verizon doesn't care about any apps, they said if I have a 4G signal and can make and receive calls then there is nothing wrong. I have not called LG about this.
I have rooted the Revolution and understand that the Charge can be rooted as well.
I've heard that Gingerbread is coming to the LG sometime next month, but have no idea if that will fix the connectivity issues.
Given these facts does anyone have any suggestions/opinions about keeping the Revolution or Paying the $35 and getting a Charge?

I had the Revolution for 14 days and just exchanged it for a Charge today. I did a lot of research to select the Revolution over the Charge and TB however there were a few pain points that I couldn't get over:
1. The phone would shut itself off randomly (twice). A friend who has the Revo has the same problem.
2. One day the screen blacked out. I continued to receive calls but the screen wouldn't turn back on. I removed the battery, restarted the phone, then when it loaded back up, it shut down completely. Turning it on again seemed to fix whatever the issue was.
3. Sometimes phone calls would ring for ~6 seconds while the screen remained black, attempting to load the call screen so I could answer.
4. When ending a call, I consistently had to wait ~2-4 seconds before the End button would actually end the call. This was annoying, especially when I got someone's voicemail and wanted to end the call.
5. Grabbing a connection whether 3g or 4g seemed to be MUCH slower then my Droid X.
I'm happy so far -- my Revo pulled 7-8mbps down and 3-4 up where the Charge is getting 13-14mbps down and 4-5 up from the exact same location in my house. Also with ADW launcher, the "lagginess" of the Charge stock UI has gone away.
I too didn't get the Charge initially because of the form but with a body glove case on it I don't mind it at all.
It's a tough call... none of these 4g phones seem to be perfect so it's really up to you if you can live with the downfalls you currently have. There's no saying moving to a new 4g phone will fix your issues... but maybe it will!

The design kept me away from it. Petty, I know, but the thing looks like a turd.
I mean, seriously?

If they had forgone the logo at the bottom and squared it off shorter, I might have kind of liked it, but that color as well... what is it, a dark brown too?

I have had my LG for just over a week. I like it quite a bit. A lot of the guys here seem to be working pretty fast to get some working roms.
What bugs me:
Redundancies. If I get an email, I get the What's New app, and review the email. The email notification stays on the status bar, until I go to the email app directly, and review the email.
Emails. I am not getting them through the stock email. It will not connect to the "server" I don't know what issue it's having. I downloaded Yahoo Mail, and it works fine.
4G. Nice, but it is a battery killer. I switched to CDMA only, and it's fine, until I want to use Google Nav and it takes forever to load. A switch option, without having to reboot, would be nice.
Bing. **** you Microsoft.
Google. Google doesn't work properly. Google search will work peachy for the voice requests, but I can not type into the search.
Likes: I was on US Cellular before this, and sadly, they don't have 3G here. There is hope out there, that Verizon will buy US Cellular in the near future.
4G. Blink, it's done.
Smooth. The design is nice, the programming is smooth, and responsive.
Quality. Overall quality of the the phone is nice. I moved from the HTC Desire which had a cheap feel. The UI was nice, but this one isn't bad, just takes some getting used to.
Customization. Thanks to everyone here (a donation is on the way soon (my wife has to approve it, lol)) there is cool stuff in the works for the LG.
If you have an issue with your phone, I would turn it in for a replacement, and skip getting the Samsung Charge.

Gray Wifi Icon with JuiceDefender/GreenPower

Hi, everyone. For those of you NS owners running ICS 4.0.3 and use JuiceDefender or GreenPower to manage your Wifi, after unlocking or turning on your screen and then connecting to Wifi, do you get an all gray Wifi icon on the notification bar, even though you're getting good signal?
Here's what mines look like, and I'm not sure if this is an app or ICS 4.0.3 issue:

It only shows up like normal (with blue bars) if I turn off and turn on back right away my screen.
So, nobody uses JuiceDefender or GreenPower on their NS?
I actually use Juice Defender as well, however when I have good signal (using WiFi) it turns blue as it should.
I am using Stock 4.0.3 w/ BrainMaster's tweaks.
I use AOKP has a built in "Juice Defender"

I'm having the same exact problem, but I'm on the LTE Galaxy Nexus.
I'm having exactly same problem.
When I turn on "power saver mode"(it's AOKP stock JD control) it shows always grey signal after turn oh the screen, even though signal's fine.
Anyway, it's not so anoying for me. :-D

Well, my NS is on Brainmaster's Stock ICS ROM. So, I suppose this is an ICS issue, and power saving apps have nothing to do with it.
What's the best way to let Google know about this bug?

I don't use Juice Defender and I don't have that issue. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say your problem actually is Juice Defender. The gray icon means you are not synced with Google's servers. Since Juice Defender turns off sync/mobile data as one of it's features logic says its the app that's the problem

If that was the case, it would show the connectivity bars and be gray. As seen in his screenshot, it's not even showing signal strength. And if we weren't connecting to the google servers, we would be experiencing other problems.
I don't think it's an ICS issue either, it happened on my Droid Bionic on 2.3 as well.
Yup, I just installed Juice Defender on my Galaxy Nexus (used it on my Nexus One) and noticed the grey wifi signal just like your screen shot. Happens after I unlock the device.
Old thread I know, but I've got the same issue on galaxy note running custom ics rom . O ly happens when jd is set to manage wifi. I turn wifi management off inside jd and my wifi signal notification is back to normal
Confirming problem on Galaxy S3.
Again I know this is an old thread but I thought it was appropriate just to confirm this bug on the galaxy S3. Don't know of a fix though.
I still have the same bug with Green Power

I was hoping that this issue will be resolved in the official ICS 4.0.4 update, but my NS still has this gray Wi-Fi icon bug with both JuiceDefender and GreenPower.
Bug on S3
I can confirm this bug not only while usng JD, and Green Power, but also using Better WiFi.
This might be caused by some permission isue with ICS. And not necesarilly with JD.
I will install JD on jelly bean, and see if the bug is still there.
Bug on S3 too
Hi !
I've got a galaxy S3 with JuiceDefender, and I've got exactly the same problem too...
Same bug still exists in stock Jelly Bean.

Why doesn't someone email to developer of GreenPower ? Gael is a kewl dude and we've been exchanging emails, when he started with the GreenPower app.

Screen wakes up from sleep/standby by itself.

Hello guys, I'm interested in buying a galaxy note from somebody, but it has a problem. The screen wakes up from sleep by itself multiple times. From what I understand it turns on, then turns off, a few seconds later it turns on, then off.
I've seen this problem on other forums, and some answers include turning off/uninstalling some programs, but the guy who owns the phone said he restored to factory default. (The phone is rooted.)
Is this a fixable problem? Is it a big bother to stop me from trying to buy the phone? Is this a hardware or software? Did anyone have this problem and fix it? Thanks.
Ah poop wrong section (supposed to be in the Q&A right). Had the wrong tab open, sorry.
You could try cleaning the use port. Maybe the phone thinks something is being plugged in

I have had this problem, but it only ever happens when you turn the Note on while on charge. If you disconnect before turning on it never happens. No idea if that helps, but that is my experience.
i had this same problem and it was caused by go weather app because it wasn't able to access the internet for some reason..
i reinstalled the app and it solved the problem..
i have included a screenshot of night time usage when this problem existed.i did not use the phone during the entire 8 hours..the phone was acting by itself..

Thanks a bunch for the answers guys, some new answers I haven't seen. I bought the phone, so hopefully if it happens I can fix it.
Just in case somebody else is looking for the same answer (since it's a rare problem), some possible answers I've read on other forms (haven't tried any of these):
1. Clear cache/memory from the task manger.
2. Check apps. that connect online (including widgets), and disable/reinstall them (like what johnvarghese said). This might happen with there is no wifi. (Also check which apps might wake up your phone from sleep.)
3. Somebody (on a random forum) told me to turn on the GPS.
4. Some applications can be used for locking/unlocking/ or disabling other programs/ or turning of wifi when the phone turns off, not sure, more info. could be found if you google search.
Again thanks a bunch guys.

Congradulations on your new phone. Ive been a happy note owner for almost a month. On stock 4.0.3 just root. The problem ur refering to dosent seem to me as a problem, my note and nexus s have the same issue and a few friends owners of android devices get the same "behaviour" whether on ics or gb. When i look at my battery stats, during the night the phones battery usage is literally a flat line but with many wake ups in the screen. Above a user posted a screen shot over an 8 hour period with massive drain. thats not normal. you shouldnt worry yourself as long as your battery is holding up properly.

This is for a phone that is not at all used! 4% an hour for a phone that isn't used is a lot, especially given FastDormancy is keeping the phone awake for 1 hour 7 minutes out of 2 hours 57 minutes, a whopping 38%!
Clearly my carrier doesn't support FastDormancy or it wouldn't take so long to send the disconnect messages!
The worrying part is that I have even changed the radio to GSM Auto (PRL) in an attempt to reduce battery life as the phone constantly tries to get the best 3G signal possible which is anyway sketchy in my house.
Help appreciated. Thanks.

If you're rooted, get Titanium backup pro and freeze "orientation notifier", "modem fast dormancy...", and "modemstatservice". Under battery, these were labelled as "wakelock" and used about 25% of my battery.

Do all three need to be disabled or freezing just "modem fastdormancy service" is enough? What does "orientation notifier" do anyway? I thought it was to do with screen orientation.
Those three fall under wakelocks, hence all three being disabled did the trick for me!

Well I have only disabled "modem fastdormancy" and it has done the trick for me. Why disable more, especially when you don't know what those two do!
What exactly do you mean by "fall under wakelocks"? Using which app? BetterBatteryStats only showed me modemfastdormancyservice doing a partial wakelock and keeping the phone awake.

Under Settings>Battery..........you know, without some fancy app
I disabled them because they ALL caused wakelock. You can do what you want, but like you said "modemfastdormancyservice doing a partial wakelock" I didn't risk it with the others. Disabled all of them and not a single problem

Okay, so far I have never seen anything like "wakelock" being displayed in Settings>Battery.
And, before you disabled, did you find out what those other two did? fastdormancyservice is self-explanatory but google search doesn't bring up much in terms of results for the other two. Why take a risk? But you say everything works fine? LTE, HSPA+, HSPA, EDGE, etc. and the networks seemlessly switch when you go to an area with weak LTE/3G signal?

I'm using it unlocked on T-Mobile....get HSPA+ speeds fine. 10mbps down and 2 up, goes to E, wifi. You can always try it and defrost it if it cause you problems. It's not like we're telling you to delete something, so I'm not understanding this RISK you speak of.......

Risk as in if it suddenly doesn't boot anymore, etc. Has happened once for me so I'm very, very cautious. Especially since I do not have a recovery installed to create a nandroid backup. Anyway, I haven't seen the "wakelock" option showing up on my settings>battery screen till now. If it does, maybe I will try freezing the other two you have mentioned as well.
At least as far as I can tell, freezing the fastdormancyservice alone seems to let the phone sleep without any problems and the other two services you have mentioned certainly aren't running. Maybe the fastdormancyservice is required for the other two to work and with this frozen, they shut down as well I don't know.

What does that parameter refer to? Should that be changed as well? My instinct says it should left as false since they did not want FD to be active during a call but I wanted to confirm just in case.

Hi, I have a same problem with my new Samsung Galaxy S3 mini and Sports Tracker. And many other reporting this problem. Sports Tracker works fine with my ZTE Blade. The first I thought that the fault is in bad GPS module in my phone. But the GPS work fine with Navi software. I realized that in Navi software the phone screen is always on and with Sport Tracker go in stanby. And when the screen go in standby the gps stop working. And when the signal is repeatedly interrupted then for a long time does not want to connect. Solution is that you in Sport Tracker settigs set Screen backlight to Always on. Now the problem is that the random clicking Stop suspended yor current workout. I do not know if fault is with Jelly Bean ROM or with Samsung Galaxy phones. Later I again tested navi app IGO Primo and if I turned off the screen GPS also go on off.
Phone screen always ON is also not an ideal solution. Because the signal is still losing, but every once for a second.
I tried various apps: GPS Status (settings: Background behavior/The app will keep the GPS running even the device screen is turned off.
But it does not work).Tracker Booster, Keep My GPS Alive, but without success
Is there any solution for this?
I'm still searching but it doesn't look hopeful. I've tried lots of different rooms and kernels too but with no success all show same issue.

I am having the same problem and I am really disappointed. I have made the same thoughts with you, I thought that maybe it is the GPS receiver which is not strong enough, but this is not the problem, because it can find my position even when I am in my house!
I use (I mean I try unfortunately without success) Sports Tracker and I experienced the same problems. I installed the Tracker Booster and at first I thought I solved my problem. But today when I went out for a long ride with my bike (60+ kilometers) I realised I had the same problems.
What can I tell... I hope that Sports tracker will give us an update and magically the problem will be an unpleasant memory of the past!
If anyone have solved this problem please tell us how

That contributed absolutely nothing to this thread. I've seen plenty of your other posts and they do the exact same thing, they are off-topic of the thread. My apologies if you don't speak English well and simply don't understand what the topic of each thread is, but if you are fluent in English you are simply posting off-topic.
ON-TOPIC: Yes I have this bug happen to me at least 5 times a day. I've only had it not show the clock at all, but I haven't had half-formed numbers, that one is a strange bug.
Haven't had that bug, but I do sometimes get an annoying lag from unlocking the phone to seeing the screen. Seems to usually happen if I've previously swiped away a notification, then later when I unlock the phone.
Weird. I haven't seen that. I'm assuming you've installed the updated "Motorola Active Display" service through Google play?

How to get the home screen clock widget to show the hour number thicker than the minutes number as shown in the above image?
I mean on my Indian Moto X XT1052, the home screen default clock widget shows both the hour and minute number in a thin font. On all the other Moto X everywhere I see that the hour number is thicker. Why is it not showing that way on my phone?
Sorry OP for the off topic question.
I'm having this exact same issue on my Droid Ultra Maxx. I guess there isn't a solution yet? When the lock screen breathes and it shows the clock, sometimes the numbers are broken.
I've got the problem on my retail UK 1052
But it only happened after I flashed the 1053 4.4.3 update, I did a full twrp backup before flashing so I restored back thinking this would fix the problem but no, its still happening.
I was away during the weekend and the amount of times this happened got more and more then on Saturday evening my display 'inverted' just like looking at a negative image. Everything worked but the screen was negative however pressing power then unlocking worked 3 times out of 5.
Saturday night my phone really really lagged in everything, maps drawing a 2 frames a second, no animation etc and I said to myself when I get back I will revert back to stock.
Later on my display went completely, it was like static or an old tv out of tune. The phone works I.E. rings, bleeps on messages etc but no matter what I tried I could not clear it.
After loosing all hope I eventually managed to power off by guessing the positions of the on screen buttons and Sunday evening I did the stock reflash as described here using rsdlite.
Reflash finished but the screen was the same, just static but squeezing, pressing and holding in various places it came back. Wohoo I thought and reloaded all my apps etc then turned off for the night and switched back on yesterday morning but the static was back.
I have took my phone back to the shop and I am awaiting a replacement but anyone experiencing this behaviour please be on guard because if this happens to you then you are screwed.
Hope yours dont go like mine.
.
Just as more info, I have a Moto X / no mods / Brazilian with this bug (or related).
Sometimes the first number on my Active Display clock does not show, like, if the time is 16:04 it shows 6:04
Since here we usually use both clock formats (12h and 24h clocks) That can be VERY confusing sometimes (like now, I was so happy It was time to go home, and now I'm sad ).
I see this happening once a day in average.
