Retrieve files from internal sd card - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I had a little accident with my captivate and my screen is dead...the phone is booting normally I think but I can't see anything at all just a black screen...
Is there a way I can mount the internal storage with adb commands or something to get some of my files transferred to my windows pc?
I did have the pattern lock enabled so I don't know if that would make a difference.
Thanks

If you had a custom ROM with CWM then you could 3 button combo in to CWM recovery and mount your drives that way.

Unfortunatly I had just flashed the gingerbread leak so no cwm was installed...

Have you tried adb? Assuming that you usb debugging enabled, you should be able to do 'adb pull /mnt/sdcard .' and get a full dump of your card.
If not, i think that using Heimdall you could always flash a build with adb enabled and debugging on. You could also probably use Odin, but I am unfamiliar with it.
Finally, check with at&t online tech support and see if they have suggestions. My experience may be atypical, but I find them far more tech savvy than other at&t support staff.

I'm sorry I cannot tell you exactly how to do this but mobiletechvideos youtube site has a video for this exact thing, damaged screens. There is a way to use your pc as your phone screen that way you can pull off what you need.
Hope this helps some.

Have you tried just plugging it in to your computer? If it is powered up, and usb debugging was off, you may be lucky enough to fully access your files on the internal sd.

worst case scenario:
flash a custom kernel through download mode with ODIN, reboot into recovery, and
"adb pull /sdcard /path/on/computer/you/want/files"
may have to run a mount command to get it to mount sdcard though

[Q] Help please - Windows detects galaxy internal sd card as an empty/unusable drive

Hi all
I rooted my phone today. I then installed clockworkmod and saved a stock backup. Following that, I successfully enabled 3 button recovery.
My problem appeared either after rooting or after clockworkmod. The problem was there prior to enabling 3 button recovery. I suspect it was clockworkmod that caused the problem.
Anyway, when I connect the phone to the computer the 16gb internal sd card & 2gb phone storage appear as removable drives in 'my computer'. However, double clicking on the drives gives the message 'no disk in the drive, please insert one'. Windows can't read the usable file space, browse or even format the drives.
However, I can browse the internal sd card fine using any android file manager.
Also, I can use adb to push/pull files.
What is going on?
I need to know quite quickly what to do. I initiated a phone repair with my carrier due to the mtp crash bug, so they are expecting it to be returned pronto. If the phone is stuffed, I'll send it back. If this can be fixed, I'll keep it since I managed to get the three button recovery working.
Also, I think there's a boot rom or something to do with clockworkmod still installed? How do I get rid of that if I'm sending the phone back. I know how to unroot.
Edit: I just found an external sd card to test. I formatted it in windows by using a sd card reader, then when I plugged it into the phone and tried it as a mass storage device windows didnt like it. Putting it back into the card reader one last time and windows recognised it. Makes no sense....
Edit2: In kies mode, kies can access it. And also it adds a 'galaxy s' to my computer where the internal sd card actually works... now I'm even more confused!
Have you tryed formatting your internal Sd or useing recovery 2e and factory resetting your phone?
I've tried formatting it and reset via settings->privacy->factory reset data.
Is 3 button recovery any different to the above type of reset? What will it roll the system back to?
(The recovery image I made in rom manager will have the same problem. I dont currently have an update.zip on my sd card due to formatting it, but I can get one on there using adb if I need to.)

Is your usb debugging on by chance? If so, turn it off ans reconnect the phone to the pc.
Mine does this when usb debugging is on and im on a stock eclair rom... Hope it helps...

That thought occurred to me too. Definately off. Ive checked it many many times now
When I first used adb, I simply pulled the plug out. I couldn't see any 'quit debug' command. There are start/kill server commands, they dont seem appropriate. Doesnt look like I should have had to do anything other than just pull the cable out.
Update:
I think that the update.zip's applied to my phone have changed some software to an earlier version that what my unit was shipped with.
When I first got the phone, I just plugged it into the pc and selected 'mass storage' on the phone. The drives then appeared (and worked) in windows.
Now, I have to click mass storage. That on its own isnt enough. But if I pull-down the tray menu at the top of the screen, there is another option to click (something along the lines of 'select this to transfer files between your phone and pc'). If I click that, it works.
There are some slight differences still:
1) I could swear that my phone originally allowed access to the 2gb phone internal memory (I never tried reading/writing to it, but I'm convinced windows displayed a 2gb drive).
2) I used to get the "xx/13.4gb free" under the drive letter in 'my computer', which I now only get in the status bar at the bottom of windows file explorer.
QUESTION
Does everybody else have to click "mass storage mode" AND pull down the task bar and click "transfer files" to get the internal sd to work as mass storage in windows?
Or do they just have to click "mass storage mode" and that's all?
Thanks
I always had to pull down the menu and manually mount the sd card when using mass storage.

Definately wasnt the case on my phone (bought mid october, so its quite new) because I got my music on there via mass storage twice before 'hacking' it. I couldn't have done that without knowing about the extra buttons to press. It's good to know that it's just a side effect of the update.zips I've applied, and that I get to keep the phone
Cheers

[Q] How to copy the data from internal SD with Broken Screen

My galaxy Screen was broken by accident, but the phone boot and I can hear all the sounds. I can connect the phone to my Laptop and the computer recognize the phone and the sd card. But, I can't access the sd card, because I can confirm to mount to USB.
It's there's a way to access the internal SD card so I can retrieve all the information and TIBU directory with all the apps data.
Thanks
not sure but if u were on custom recovery then u can mount through that and try....
Thanks, for you're time, but how do I go there. If I can see anything on Screen. The phone was running Illuminance 3.01, with Corn Kernel. That means that I have CWM installed, but I can see anything.

Thanks, I read the post. But I don't have a spare phone to follow the menues in CWM. Fortunately I found the app MyPhoneExplorer and I have the debug option allways in. I just install and run the app, browse the files and copy the files to my computer.
Thanks God, I have all my information and apps safe in my Laptop. Just in case I made a DVD copy of the info. LOL
Thanks.
That's cool you got it all with that program. Good deal.
but, i gave the button count so you didn't need a second phone, or that app...

if you boot into recovery (with adb reboot recovery) it should be volume down 6 times, then power, vol up twice then power and that should get you to mount the sdcard so you an just use windows gui to copy everything over instead of a command prompt

broken screen need files and a rom backup

Okay so i was working in the garage and my captivate got bumped off the table and fell flat on its back and webbed out the screen (DAMN IT!).
Lucky i got 2 more sitting as backups.
My problem is its stuck in fast charge and i cant use the screen to get out of it and cant see anything (the screens finally faded so cant tell if its in recovery or not)
Is there any app or method i can use to force it in to mass storage mode or something to extract my files (i don't know all the directory's or id use adb and extract each folder) also there a way to do a rom backup so i don't got to start over from scratch with all my tweaks iv done.
Sorry if theirs a post for this i looked and didn't see anything for my series (didn't check newer models yet but going to after i post)
running

[Q] ADB pull /sdcard not working?

hey
I've a question I try to save the data of a friends phone whos screen is broken and dont respond.
Everytime I use
Code:
Code:
adb pull /sdcard/ C:\Android
it responds with
Code:
Code:
pull: building file list...
0 files pulled. 0 files skipped.
What do I wrong??
Thanks for your replies
Does really nobody know it?
Or does anybody have a solution the save data from a phone which screen is broken (black) and touch screen doesn't work either and last but not least usb debugging isn't enabled.
Without USB debugging enabled, you can't connect trough adb, try doing "adb devices", wich will probably show nothing, what means that you can't use adb.

I've rooted the phone blind and in the recovery my pc shows the device in the list, status = recovery.
Oh okay, then try to mount sdcard and try again, if that doesn't work, try to unmount it again and try again.

thank you very much for your replie, i tried it with my phone (i9000) and it worked
the problem is that my friend has a Galaxy S3 and i don't know the structure of CWM 5.5...
Well there isn't that much difference between the cwm versions, if you look at it it almost explaines itself
Sent from my awesome fridge
there are some diffrentes between the versions and because i don't see what i do, it's very important to know in which order the things are coming
At the moment the situation is the following:
All the data on the sd got erased (i dont know when), but i have now access to the sd over the pc. The problem is that the S3 doesnt support usb mass storage which means that recuva etc to restore the files wont work.
Are there any other ways to restore the data or to activate usb mass storage?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda app-developers app
not unless you have a TitaniumBackup...if you have CWM 6.0.1.0 mounting USB storage option is in recovery itself
also i have no intention of high jacking this thread but off late i am facing certain weird issues with adb myself Error mounting SDcard
My dont have a TitaniumBackup but that is anyway useless cause he need his pictures etc. Do you have read the whole thread? Because at the moment the problem is that i cant restore the data from the erased sd card cause windows dont detect the Galaxy S3 as a Usb mass storage. And because the screen is broken I also cant try a solution from xda ^^
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda app-developers app
Well, the data on your sdcard is gone, if adb won't recognize it. But what files do you want from your sdcard? 'cause when you only need the pictures, it might be auto-uploaded on dropbox or google drive etc
Sent from my awesome fridge
I think you missunderstood ^^ first the pictures arent uploaded to dropbox etc. And the problem first was that i couldnt get access to the data cause he had a pin to unlock which i cant tip in without screen. After flashing a 3 file fw the pin was gone and i could access the data. Unfortunality it also formated the whole SD.
The same Problem happend to my phone and i could restore my data with the program called "Recuva".
The problem now is that the S3 don't have a USB Mass Storage like the S1 and the PC dont detect it as a hard drive so Recuva wont recognize it either
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda app-developers app
Well you can always buy a USB stick with sdcard availability, or use another phone with that sdcard to wich does have mass storage enabled.
Sent from my awesome fridge
The problem is, i need the data from this Phone. Accidently it formated the whole internal memory on which everything was (Music, Pictures etc.).
With a Tool called Recuva you can restore deleted files. But Recuva doesn't recognizes the Galaxy S3. Because Galaxy S3 don't have Mass Storage anymore, I thought Samsungs uses now MTP or something like this. And now i need a Tool or something to restore everything from the formated internal SD.
Try searching for that on google.
Sent from my awesome fridge
I did for nearly 5 hours
you're my last hope
All wouldn't be a problem if the screen would work or if my friend enabled usb debugging
Is there any possibility to get into recovery mode and flash a Rom? If yes, you could use a Stockrom with a modified build.prop so USB debugging would be enabled.

Usb debugging dont matter at the moment cause all files are deleted! I need a tool to restore a formated sd

Okay nevermind, it's possible, but to recover the files you need something to pare your sdcard to your PC, do you have any other phone or a USB stick with a sdcard slot?

Phone won't boot. Stuck in CWM. All files lost!!

This morning I was playing around in CWM and clicked on format external sdcard
Well for some reason it formatted my internal card and I lost everything. I tried using a backup cwm made I guess prior to doing all that but it says MD5 mismatch.
I tried using cwm to get into usb mode but that didn't work.
I also tried using the sideload option but that also didn't work.
Tried getting into download mode and it still only boots to recovery.
How do I get a new rom put back on there?
clockworkmod has a way to mount internal storage on you PC while in recovery. Go to mounts and storage section in recovery and way at the bottom it says mount as USB storage. Plug your phone into your PC and wait for it to find drivers. I would recommend a internet connected windows 7 PC cause that's what I used and it worked fine.
You might have to unplug it and plug it back in once after the drivers are installed.

I just tried what you suggested and it doesn't work either....I think I really got it messed up...but I still think it can be fixed.
After doing what you said CWM says Error: mounting /data
I'm pretty sure my entire file system has been wiped clean.

Once connected, you'll probably need to flash Odin KK4 without bootloaders and start fresh from there.

Any suggestions on that? LOL
