[Q] N00b-danger to myself and others - Nook Color General

I have searched this site for a few days trying to find some sort of answer...okay well an answer i can understand. but perhaps my n00banism is getting in the way. I've broken my nookcolor but it's not broken. yep. exactly. Here is my story:
I was able to root my nook thanks to theunlockr.com. I followed those directions and was able to get a nightly of cm7 (which i ran on my device for 3 months or so). when i tried to update to the stable version I kept getting an error message that the file was bad...i forget the exact wording. SOOO enter me, and my awesomeness. I found tipstir.the-talk.net and an option to load honeycomb on my nookcolor (which seems to be running fine btw). Somehow during that my clockwordmod rom manager was missing. I hadn't yet loaded the gap pack so i went online to the android market and downloaded it. yay. I tried to 'reboot into recovery' to load or 'flash'...but it just reboots normally.
I have since found that the kindle app and aldiko (which is the only app i've found that will read my old sony ereader books) just wont run on honeycomb which makes it all but useless to me since i use this primarily as an ereader.
I dont know what to do to fix the situation that i've found myself in. I think i read somewhere that you can load cm7 on an sd card and run it...but how then would I fix the situation that i've gotten myself into?
yhea...i have just enough interest in these sort of things to get myself in trouble, but not enough practical knowledge to get myself out of the pickles. SO please help the lame and powerless!
Thanks so much
Mikaela

The most surefire fix is to make a cwm card, flash back to your stock firmware, then either use cm7 on the card or install it on your nook(emmc). Basically, treat it like you bricked it. There are quite a few threads that can tell you step by step how to do it.

Edit : go to the stickies tab and look, there's a thread with all the info you need

Have you tried to download Rom manager, and then download clockworkmod from within clockworkmod. Then reboot into recovery from Rom manager. Probally, just trying to help.

fix!
I went back to theunlockr.com and reset back to factory settings and essentially re-rooted the device from there. =) i dont know why i didn't think of that in the first place but *someone* pointed that option out to me. thanks for the help!

[Q] Nook not booting

Hi Guys,
After a few days hacking my nook, I tried the new market for the nook, and the market wouldn't work. I did have a backup but I really wanted to get the new one working. After a few days of trial and error, (Changing permissons, reinstalling, etc.) I found this script on NookDevs-http://nookdevs.com/Enable_the_Android_Market, and wanted to see if this would get me back to stock+root with market and everything. It didn't. My nook won't boot up anymore. It gets stuck on where it has the big gray N and it says Contains Reader Mobile Technology by Adobe at the bottom. I have clockworkmod installed, so I can't take it back to the store. Any help uninstalling clockworkmod or making it boot would be appreciated. I really would hate it if I wasted money on this thing.
PS-I am on update 1.01, and adb is semi-working. I'm sure I could get it to work if I played around.
Bump...
Sure would appreciate if someone helped.
I haven't had to do it but its possible to reset it to factory. Search for "reset" in this board. Something about 8 failed boots resets it to stock.

Clockwork Mod Recovery
I have Clockworkmod Recovery installed. I tried the eight failed boots. It just takes me to the recovery.
Thanks for trying to help though. Appreciated.

Bump. Hey, does anyone think I should try Nookie Froyo?

I used Nookie Froyo to boot and get my device back to usable when it was looping like no other.
Got Nookie Froyo working, but I can't seem to find a way to remove Clockworkmod or restore the system from there. If I removed clockworkmod, I could take it back to the store and exchange it, but restoring it to factory would be even better because I wouldn't have to take it back. I took back my broken Nook charger before, and the guy wanted me buy a new one.

I don't think you can (yet). That's why they said don't use the in-work version until it's finished, unless you're ok with not being able to restore.
Well, I suppose I shouldn't, but I really wanted to be ready when the ROMS came out. Is there any way I can remove clockworkmod? I wish I hadn't installed that now. I hope I'm not screwed.

[Q] Nook color won't boot?

I just installed update 1.1, then tried to use autonooter, I didn't actually get anywhere using autonooter(The nook wouldn't even turn on?), so I took the SD card out, now I'm stuck at the screen where it shows the nook N, and "contains reader mobile technology by Adobe Systems Inc." at the bottom..
Any help?:/
8 times reboot? CWR for restoring the stock rom? CWR for flashing froyo? There are many options. I did all of them before for fun.

Here's a couple options for ya'.
Nook Color Restore to stock
Flash back to clean stock ROM
On the plus side, it's almost impossible to brick a nook color, so one of these should work for ya'. Best of luck to you, mate.

Okay, I got it to boot up again with the 8times reset, and did the power+n.
But for some reason, now it won't let me re-register it? I get an error, and it tells me to reboot.
Anyway, can anyone tell me how to update to 1.01? The B&N site only has a download for update 1.1... I think that's where I went wrong.
Thanks a lot, guys

Go ahead and boot it up, then go in to Settings -> Device Info -> Erase & Deregister Device. Let it do it's thing, and after the reboot, you should be at 1.0.0. Go and head and register your device now. =)
After you're all re-registered, head over to here, download the update, then just skip down to "Installing the update" since you'll already be on stock.
Enjoy! =)

Thank you very much, trying it right now!
I love how helpful the community is. I really want to use autonooter to get android on my nook. I just hate that there wasn't really clear instructions written for people who are noobs at this.
I have another question, if I'm just going to use it as a tablet, do I need to register it with B&N before I use autonooter? I don't plan on using it to actually buy any B&N books, and I'm having trouble regestering it.
Glad to help, bud. =)
If you plan on doing some really advanced stuff like moving Nookie Froyo to take the place of the stock ROM on the eMMC, you really don't need to register. However, if you plan on just using ROMs off the sdcard and keeping the stock ROM on the nook itself (like I do), you probably still want to go ahead and re-register just in case. But, if you just can't get the little fekker to register, don't worry about it. It won't hurt anything.
I suggest you to try out froyo on SD card first see if you like it. When you have time, do read about the cwr in the development forum. It is very easy to flash different rom to NC by using cwr.

[Q]

Ok, so I promise I've tried to search for a solution, but I really don't even know where to start. Please let me apologize if this has been discussed at exhaustion, but the guys I've asked so far have not seen this issue. Perhaps some of you have.
I'm going to list EVERYTHING I can think of that I've done. Please tell me what I've done wrong.
1. After picking up my NC last night, I tried running the Non-Root SDcard method of running Froyo to try it out. I tried running Rom Manager but wasn't able to do much. I tried Flashing CWM and feel that might have been a mistake. Hopefully, someone can reassure me that was not a problem.
2. I was unable to get GApps (Market most importantly) to show.
2a. After Flashing CWM and removing the SD card, I found that if I tried to force the 1.1.0 update, it would error out and put me into Recovery. That was something I assumed would not be possible, since I was of the understanding that the Non-root SDcard method was restricted solely to the SD card and didn't actually touch the Onboard memory.
3. Assuming the SDcard method might be limited to not having Market access and was more of a pre-root preview. I moved on to actually Root my NC. I did the whole, SD-image method and let my NC auto-reboot. The method I followed didn't mention anything about skipping the Google Account step. So, I tried that with some difficulty and had to back out. I never tried the whole Youtube account sync. I accessed the Market, but none of my downloads will actually go through. Tried multiple reboots, but no luck.
4. I tried to root again to see if something went awry. This time, I didn't have to go through the Android Setup steps??? But, I went ahead and logged into YouTube. Then, I went to Gmail Accounts>Account Setting, but each time it just causes my NC to reboot. Market still doesn't actually download anything.
I know it probably seems like I'm trying to many things, but I'm trying to discover the source of the problem, but behind each corner is another problem. I can't think of anything I'm doing wrong. I'm becoming very agitated. This was supposed to be a simple process, but it is not at all right now.
5. Now, as a last ditch effort, I tried to UnRoot my phone with the 8-Boot-Interruptions method. Problem is, instead of restoring the device to stock, it puts me back into CWM recovery.
Is it possible that Flashing CWM has irreversibly imprinted itself on my NC and I can not get past it to actually move forward with the Market and such? Is there any way to reverse the Flashing of CWM?
Thanks a ton in advance.
My guess is CWM writes to the system folder no matter if it has booted from SDCard or not...
Try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=931720
I believe that is the correct set of instructions, if not, my apologies.
migrax
For reference, I'm running B&N 1.0.1 and used auto-nooter-2.12.25.
It sounds like you might want to navigate overt to the development forum and do a bit of reading. I'm unsure why you flashed CWM onto your nook, but everything is easily fixable. It really depends on what state you want your nook to be in when it's all said and done. There's a thread in the development forum about restoring back to stock, doing so will remove cwm and let you start over. This is probably the best way to go as the current state of yur nook is questionable. Once you have stock working your best bet for the most functionality is rooting, and the easiest way to do that is autonooter. Definitely read the threads more than once before attempting any of this so you will know what to expect before it happens.

Just read through that link. Looks very promising. Dont think I'll have a chance to do it tonight, but I will report back ASAP. I'm hoping to get back to stock and then go straight through the root process as intended. I really feel that my unintentional CWM Flashing experience is the root of my frustration.
I'm hopeful that this will be the end of it.
Thanks again.
Thanks a BUNCH!!! It all worked out. Getting the .img out of the .tar.gz was the most difficult, but once I figured out how to use 7-zip, all was well.
I'm now rooted and have full Market/Gmail access. I'm a very happy boy

[Q] Market Help

I was messing around and forgot to back up my vending.apk before i deleted it. Now i haven't been able to get any market apks i find to work so i am without a market.
Anyone know how i can get this back?
I've tried using some vending.apks i've download like an ones from this thread:
androidtablets.*net*/forum/nook-color-technical/8512-how-setup-new-market-fix-lack-apps-showing-portrait-mode (remove astriks around .net)
But they either get an error through ADB while installing or when it installs and i try to open it up it opens and says "Loading" and then immediatly closes.
I installation errors and certificate errors when trying to install through ADB. Can't find anything on how to get around it.
Bump +
I'm not really sure why you would delete it in the first place *facepalm*. However, the only solution I can seem to find would be to just wipe everything back to stock, re-root it and go about the normal route. Search around for the process to go back to stock and whatnot.
I facepalmed already. It was definitely a stupid point in my career. I hope thats not what i have to do, but i guess i could back up everything i have, go to stock, re-install, then put everything back on.
honestly that's probably the only route at this point. Market is really weird on the nook color. I'd post the link to the requisite threads that talk about similar issues but my post count isn't high enough yet. From what I've gone through, going back to stock, re-rooting, and the whole shebang should only take about an hour. Good luck!
Well i might just go for Honeycomb then. Is honeycomb fast when on internal?
If all you want is the market, you can download the newest market APK from my webserver. The link is:
http://www.r00tyou.com/android/tools/Vending(new).apk
To push it to the device simple connect the device to your computer using ADB and type the following in the console:
adb devices
adb install \path\to\the\downloaded\apk.apk
Click to collapse
Wait for it to successfully transfer over and install.
The viola, you have the newest market APK.
ALSO, if you are wanting a pretty stable ROM I would use the nookie froyo. However, if you are wanting to do some experimentation I suggest loading up the latest CM7 nightly. I am currently running CM7 Nightly 17 with Bluetooth.

Help the Hapless...

I got a Viewsonic Gtab last year (Model# UPC300-2.2) and was not happy with the stock OS limitations so...like a Wet Ear Noob I watched a few vids and read a few posts here and thought I could do it all myself. Yeah...now I have a 1lb paperweight. Been trying to fix it ever since. I have tried to follow the various posts and links to even get it to factory restore settings but I think it's dead like Disco.
Might there be a person out there willing to baby-step me through this? I got to warn you I'm a hardware guy not a coder. I bricked this trying to install CLOCKWORK for pete's sake.
I'm still looking to put Clockwork on and some other OS that allows more Flexibility like Vegantab. Sadly I don't know what's even left on the poor girl.
Regards,
CW

Never knew there was one. I was directed here so... thanks I'll look.

I was there once. But these devices are hard to completely brick. From what I remember, u need to boot to a certain download mode. The screen will stay black, but it will be in download mode, the way u would know is when u see your computer recognizing the tablet. Remember, its the mini usb cable to your pc. Hope this helps

NVflash is where you'll want to start.
http://viewsonic-gtablet-for-dummies.webs.com/nvflash.htm
It's a full reset, and you can even install clockwork at the same time. I recommend the 1.2 branch with clockwork installed (you'll see that on the tutorial above).
Once your nvflashed with clockwork installed you can use the other tutorials on the site to flash your rom of choice.
