CM7 GPS - no lto.dat? - LG Optimus 2x

Hi,
after spending some fruitless hours trying to get better GPS performance from my p990 (cm7 nightly 60-64, baseband 0218, cm7 RIL), trying various tweaks to gps_brcm_conf.xml and even older versions of glgps, I've concluded (tentatively) that
- /data/gps/lto.dat is a file (containing ephemerals?) that's used for A-GPS
- my setup never manages to download this file.
Following this thread of thought, I tried the following (The URL is from a google search while I was digging about in gps_brcm_conf):
Code:
adb shell
cd /data/gps
wget http://gllto.glpals.com/7day/latest/lto.dat
chmod 777 lto.dat
I also did
Code:
rm gldata.sto
to remove (I think) stored orbital data from previous fixes to try to keep the results comparable.
Though measuring GPS performance is difficult due to constantly changing constellations and atmospheric conditions, I think this has made a difference in time-to-fix for me. Admittedly this might just be a placebo, so no guarantees.
If anyone wants to try this and post their results, it'd be great. And, if anyone knows anything about lto.dat, why its needed, and why it never gets downloaded, please post here so I won't be kept awake at night wondering

It might be that the Tegra2 setup doesn't use it, much like gps.conf.
Best bet would be to ask RC I suppose, although he's a bit tied up with some GPL stuff apparently.

It's referred to in gps_brcm_conf.xml (the chip-specific config file), so I've assumed it's relevant to our setup. But yeah, it's possible.

Yeah, I'll hold off on that a bit.
Would be interesting to know if anyone actually has that file in /data/gps. I'll try to find time for a restore to stock (or at least modaco) to see if it gets downloaded in the standard setup. We'll see.

don´t have it on cm .64 either ...

Just created the missing file, and got a lock from stone cold, indoors pretty fast. Did that file help? Dunno lol
Will have to test more.

OK... here is my extremely unscientific test...
GPS Status without lto.dat: 43 seconds to lock.
GPS Status with lto.dat: 19 seconds to lock.
aGPS data was cleared before each test. Interesting, but far from conclusive.

Whooo! This is amazing!
Tried to lock inside without lto.dat, no luck at all after 70+ seconds... Copied the file into /data/gps, tested the same spot and got lock after cca 10 seconds!
This is amazing

Good find. That file basically holds an analog to XTRA data; It doesn't quite help picking up satellites, but it makes locking onto them a hell of a lot faster once they're found.

Any idea why the download doesn't happen?

Download will happen for the next nightly, this is going to please a lot of people; top bombing.

This is truly awesome, hope it might have some small influence on apps keeping gps alive when screen is turned of too... Maybe a little too much to wish for, but..
Thanks send to nrkabul

It wont, that's just how Android works... my stock N1 was the same.
Endomondo excepted, that should be able to hold a lock, but doesn't. Run Keeper does it fine though.

I had stock rom, Gilgamesh and the first one WGLpoelstra posted, and Endomondo worked flawlesly on those roms, dont know what happened to GPS since then, but on CM7 i have to use My Tracks in the background to make sure that Endo records track.. Havent heard about keeper before, will check it out

and download lto file. open root explorer /data/gps and rename lto2.dat into lto.dat

It's a pain, and odd the Endomondo can't do it, when others can. If they all couldn't it would be an obvious problem, but when it's just that one (the one I happen to use at that) it's frustrating.
Still, as you've noticed, there is a work around, this might be less hassle than having My Tracks going though: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.kaukovuo.android.trackerbooster

lto.dat works great for me !!
got a fix in my car in about 5 sec, some seconds later got 10 satelites fixed !
GPS works like it did on MCR Rom for me now !
great discovery !

[Q] What are the best performance settings for Cyanogen mod?

Hey guys, as far as the Nexus One and CM 7 goes, what are the optimal settings to keep checked in CM settings, and what's the best kernel/settings for speed, but great battery life? I downloaded and installed Pershoot's kernel. Please let me know because I need the phone for long periods of time for two weeks, but I can't get an extended battery. I'm new to the N1, hence why I ask you all and can't test on my own. Thanks!
CM7 is pretty well pre-configured for great battery life and great performance. I don't know if there is much you could change that would show any benefit within the install.
I think redstar has been creating some of the most popular kernels as of late. Great performance and battery life (from what I read).
Also, if you aren't running the nightlies, I can highly recommend it. There have been some substantial performance enhancements and battery savings that have been a result of some major bug fixes. Build #87 has been working great for me.

Thanks so much, but could anyone else please provide me with further/specific/good cyanogen mod settings for the N1, such as what to check, how much VM heap, etc?
I'm gonna stick with pershoot for kernels, as i use him for the G2, and before the G1.
I freakin' love nightlies, BUT, the reason I'm running stable is because I'm leaving the country for two weeks, and I won't have access and the freedom to change my ROM due to not having a computer all the time. Hence the stable version - I do love nightlies though!
To reiterate, what are the best CM settings for CM7? Thanks in advance, guys!
Well, if you are going to run stable, do a search for the "wonk fix" and flash that zip. It is one of the major fixes in the nightlies that improves battery life.
I'm still not sure that there are any settings you could really play around with that would show any tangible benefit.
And with build #87, it has been rock solid for me. I thought the ADW EX transistions in the past were smooth. You don't need to constantly update the nightlies if you can find a good one. Just sit it out until you feel like updating again. And #87 is a great one to be at.

Sounds good, man. Thanks for your help and telling me about the wonk fix! Although I'm not 100% sure what it's for.
Should home and messaging in memory be checked?
One more issue, when I nees to press the capacitive home, menu, back, and search button, I always have to tap a bit higher than where thee keys are actualy located on the screen.everything else about the touch screen is fine. what's the reason for this?

The wonk fix was an issue that plauged CM for quite a while on the N1. It caused hard lockups of the microphone and the screen. Also, because of it, the microphone was never able to enter its low-power sleep state. With the wonk fix, you won't have any issues with the mic, and the phone will reach its low-powered sleep state.
I have never enabled the keep in memory options. My understanding is these settings were more for devices that had limited RAM (like the G1), because Android would dump these programs to free up memory for other apps, so when you went to them, it would take a while for the system to restart them. I haven't ran into a need to do this on the N1. The heap size limits the amount of ram that an app can use. Unless you are running some crazy memory intensive apps, there is really no need to adjust this. It won't help most of the apps that are out there.
As for the capacitive buttons, welcome to the wonderful world of the N1 digitizer (touchscreen). I don't know of any way to adjust this, but you get used to it pretty quickly.

No, the wonk doesn't affect the camera. What is your radio version (aka baseband)? With the N1s we usually just refer to the two sets of numbers after the underscore "_" (eg 5.08, 4.06, etc). The 5.08 is the version that google sent out with the Gingerbread update and overall seems to be the best consistent performer for the phones. The 4.06 seems to crash the camera and/or camcorder. The 5.12 seems to be really hit or miss. Some phones it runs great, others they get all sorts of issues. I usually recommend the 5.08.

Okay, and my apologies, with college I've missed and forgot key things about android - how do I find my radio version? Boot into fastboot or the bootloader?
EDIT: Under basband version, on the about phone menu, it says:
32.24.00.22U_4.03.00.21_2
Is that baseband 4.03?
Yes, the radio on your phone is 4.03. I would highly recommend updating it to 5.08. There is a basic guide in the wiki for it, or you can hit up the N1 wiki on xda for a more in depth guide.
the wonk fix and and kinda directly related to that fix greatly fixed some battery issues which kinda makes running the last stable version not worth it. the newest nightly is so much improved on battery idle current draw that its something needs to be emphesized. its that good where you can be unplugged for 8 hours and lose 3% battery idle standby, wifi on. 3-4mA current draw.
that aside, pershoots kernel is great, redstar too. there's not much i do anymore with settings on cm7 cause its so good lately.

NeoFroyo!! Well testing

hey guys!
Well i was trawling the android forums and found this!
http://www.neopeek.com/viewtopic.php?t=7524
All thanks yo neopeek for the rom.
I decided to test it out on my kovsky. This coupled with I believe duckkly's kernels worked like a charm!! ill post the kernels up here too as I experimented with quite a few to see what worked best!
Battery life: 8 hours on full blast so i rekon around 11 on normal usage
Wifi: never ever ever dropped on me so far! thou it does seem to be weak in some places around my house where i usually should be getting more signals and strong at places where i get little signal :S.confusing
phone: well calls come in and stuff but sometimes ull see a black screen and cant see who's calling! :S
Bluetooth: paired with my mw600s just fine dont know about file transfer
market:works just fine a bit slow though..could be my internet speeds out here in pakistan.
Apart from that using whatsapp like a charm. facebook apps. gaaps everything works!! not a single sod to date been using it for around about 5 days or so.
Sorry for the spelling errors! big thanks goes out to neopeek and duckkly or whoever compiled those kernels !
PS: oh and the keys will freeze up as you hit around 20% battery. I simply reboot. Also terminal doesnt seem to be working. keeps crashing on me but i dont really ever use it in daily use so it seems to be pretty stable apart from these flaws. Also you'll need to reinstall quickpic from market
Also im on radio 1.16 i believe. 1.14 seemed to drop calls randomly.
please read all of neopeek's instructions before flashing ! happy flashing
can't confirm 20% battery being the point where keys stop working. for me 4 hours of uptime seems the be magic point...
i stopped restarting modules via script (how to has been explained many times in here) and simply restart. most of the time it happens when an app is running - now what good is it if you have a shortcut somewhere, but can't get there because back- and home-key isn't working?!
but yeah, neofroyo is a big step forwards. first time using android on x1 is fun!
for terminal to work you have to reinstall it just like quickpic.
i just hope we'll see some kernel-update soon. without it the whole thing is pointless.
lol truee..thanks for the terminal update. oh if u press the camera button it will take you back to your home screen. than i guess u could load the keyboard modules..annoying i never bother with it. try my combination of kernel it gives me decent battery lifee but yea its the kernel with all the problems. tried the new kernels but they dont seem to work properly
hm, which kernel-version is that?
might try if i know which it is. just had to step down from ygge-monster to ygge-turbo. monster made my touchscreen getting unprecise in left half.
thx for the update with cam-button - never bothered to press that, since camera doesn't work anyway.
yeah, new kernels suck for our device, especially since they're missing the specific battery-driver for x1. the only guy still working on x1-kernel has been silent for months, but i can see he's still at it (porting 2.6.35.7).
Just tried pressing cam-button.
Falls back to lockscreen, after unlock shows homescreen. But system is frozen and after some time reboots directly to android. But lots of stuff doesn't work, especially phone-stuff. So i have to reboot winmo anyway.
Sent from my X1i using Tapatalk
i think its the ducckly's keyboard not loaded as modules turbo verison. I believe it should be that because i remember the msm drivers werent really working properly on it

[miui gps fix]come on!! Let us test it!!!!!

hi everybody!!!
Firstly, thank you for wasting your time read my post which may not actually work for your device.
Ok, let's begin.I believe that I find a way to fix MIUI GPS problem. Maybe works for CM, but i haven't tested it.
It was all begin from I found a phenomenon that the first boot after I flashed a GPSfix.zip(download from MIUI.com), GPS would work perfectly, but the second time i booted, the third time i booted, GPS just broke down. So i thought that it was the script in the GPSfix.zip that made GPS work!!
Obviously, what I need to do is that to make sure the script runs every time I boot my phone. So I got an app "autostart.apk" for help. And then, I modified the script picked up from the GPSfix.zip.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
INSTALL INSTRUCTION
1. flash gpsfix.zip in cmw.
2. install autostart.apk, reboot your phone, and click yes when ask for root.
3. Put the autostart.sh to /data/opt (you have to create opt folder yourself),reboot
4. use angrygps.apk for settings(mebased,cold start,sulp.nokia.com,7275) and testing.

2. I AM NOT a developer. I HAVEN'T STUDIED LINUX, NOT TO MENTION ANDROID. what i did is search on the Internet, holding the ethusiasm to MIUI. SO any suggestion is welcomed!!!!AND I hope a developer can carry on GPS fix job, cause I have no knowledge of android.
3. Sorry for my pooooooor english. BUT I think you can understand what i said.
4. I am not sure whether this way is suitable for you or not. If not, I am sorry. And I hope you can fight for MIUI GPS throughout, for you, for me, and for every Vibrant!

Every gpsd I've used in my own fix or any other fix seems to be really sensitive to lock-failures - if you back out of an app that's trying to get a fix, for some reason gps never comes back online.
If I can get a fix first thing, this seems to never happen.

I think you're right, that has been my experience as well.
Regardless, it's reassuring to hear I'm not alone!
To everyone who said there GPS has always worked on miui, has your navigation worked too? Because my phone knows where I am if I'm still but never moving.
And I have been on miui since they have said to have had working GPS and the only think that worked for me is the cm7 fix. Well until 1.5 came out.

I hope someone figues out a fix. I really hate rebooting to get GPS to work.
You know what also was working since last night. I downloaded ADVANCED TASK KILLER, and killed everything, and it had the same effect as rebooting. The built in task killer in miui does not have the same effect. This ATK trick was working up till about 10 mins ago when my GPS wouldn't come on no matter what! I was forced to reboot. Other than that the ATK trick worked. You know what else....I found going into App manager...finding the APP GPStest and clearing the user data for some reason has the same effect as rebooting also, makes GPS in Maps work.
Strange observations I know.

just tested the no-ssl update here, and i never seen a gps lock on 12 sat positions found inside (5 used).
great information , was very helpful indicating this gps is really improved. signal strength is perfect.

Outside, I don't use to have problems with GPS so, I didn't saw any difference.
Inside of the house it's like always, I didn't notice any difference too, no signal...

Of course I rebooted the phone. And I tried maps too, but is normal.
I live at the ground level, I have more 3 levels above me, and the wall to...
By the way, if parabolic dishes can't have obstacles within "X" meters to have satellite signal, I'm not expecting to have it inside of an apartment
Just a question... Why when I go to HIDE MENU / GPS TEST and select "standalone", if I don't change the settings back to "MS_ASSIST" GPS don't find satellites???
Strange, cause during the test, in "standalone", he catch the satellites as well as in "MS-ASSIST"

standalone is gps itself..
assist is *i think* a-gps..
point being, *i think* its only relevant to the test..
I thought the same but like I said before, if I leave in "standalone" it doesn't work.
Sent from my LG-P880 using xda app-developers app
worked beautifully...:good:
ROOTED?
is it requiring to rooted the device?
if YES.. then is it possible to have it work without rooting the device?
thx

I think it required roots, because you must have write access to system/etc
Sent from my LG-P880 using xda app-developers app
of course you need to be rooted, cause you need to mount /system/ as read/write to be able to push the file to /system/etc/
Why I can't just use Root File Manager (rooted) and change the permissions and copy-paste that file??
I tried to change the permission and it appears the same as before..
MyTracks problems
Hey everyone, first post here and I didn't feel like making a new topic, and this thread seems the closest I could find to my issue.
Have any of you tried using Google "My Tracks" with this phone? I just received mine, and had been using my old LG Optimus Net with My Tracks to record a gps track of my runs.
With my new 4X HD, there are substantial gaps in the track (this was while testing within a car). I haven't tried tweaking the recording settings in My Tracks yet, but this issue never occurred in any of my other Android phones. My Tracks is using all default settings.
I noticed that the track never broke up when I had the screen on, it was only when the device was locked. I tested a similar applicatoin (RunKeeper) on the return trip, and it worked perfectly. Any idea what's going on here, and have any of you experienced it?
Is anyone on JellyBean willing to test My Tracks next time they go for a drive, to see if this is an issue that might be fixed in the next OS update?
Here are two screenshots showing the issue I'm having.
I always use endomondo and never had problem with the GPS.
2/3 years ago I remember testing many tracking apps but the most reliable always seemed to be endomondo or locus.

Thanks for the reply. Would you be willing to do a quick test of MyTracks (with the screen off) next time you're in a car? I'd like to figure out if this problem is specific to my handset or if it's a common issue with this phone.
Doesn't seem to help for me...(Australia)
Ladies and gentlemen
Today I tried to install the patch by the 3 methods mentioned in the initial post, but I could not do it, even having access to root, RW permission, everything and anything.
Then experimented fourth method to install the patch (no-ssl in my case)
1 -> Download file.
2 -> Open "gps.conf" with a text editor, and copy all the text to the clipboard
3 -> Go to Folder "System/etc" create a file named "gps.conf" and long press it to edit as text, paste the text and save.
You are done!!
Many thanks to crypted
Can someone tell me what I can infer from the below screenshot. I do not understand this.
I tried "Google Specific CWM Flashable" and it seems to be working now - at night (yesterday), it wasn't do great but now, I can lock in about 30 seconds indoors and around 5 seconds outdoors.

Phone goes crazy when (I guess) overheated

Hi guys, I have annoying probnlem with my LG 4x... When I work little bit longer on my phone, it just starts to behave crazy. Screen starts to "touch himself" I just look at it and he starts to get in menus, opening pictures, closing apps, opening new ones... I just lock screen for 10 secs and than everything is fine for few minutes. Than same thing again. This happens with every ROM and every karnel I try til now. Works fine only with stock. I'm now on Beanstalk 4.4 and iodak 9.95. Thanks!!!

Its a weird issue, are you sure it works fine on stock? because it sounds like a digitizer issue to me (rather than software, since the rest of us dont have this issue)
im not sure where to begin lol, can you pull some logs? (dmesg and logcat)
Oh.. and I guessed it was only me.
I have this problem too, works fine with stock but it goes crazy with custom rom.
Any idea ?

No worries, nothing out of the ordinary in the logs, its looking more like hardware(hopefully im wrong). It might be worth testing a stock rom under the same conditions again, if there is no issue, then theres something weird going on. btw 50c is fine temp for cpu, around 75c is the limit.
Can you get a screen recording of it? (most 4.4 based roms have this functionality built in) this could be helpful also https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ds.cpuoverlay

I don't know why, but every time I tried to record screen, phone just reboots. I tried with various apps, every time same thing. I cant find built in app in beanstalk 4.4. I'll try stock again but cant before tomorow. Thank you for your time
Use beanstalk with grouper blobs, and press vol up and power simultaneously to record
