"Gen8v2" and Gen9 firmware available - Gen9 Android Development

I'm not sure if this qualifies as development, but there are two unreleased firmwares floating around the Archos update server.
One is for a Gen8v2, which I have no idea what that is. It won't install onto current release models of the Gen8 lineup. I've tried on my A70IT and my A101IT.
http://update.archos.com/8/gen8v2/gen8v2_2.3.72/firmware_archos_android_gen8.aos
Then the surprising thing, is that there is a Gen9 firmware available!
Could possibly be a pre-release firmware, or possibly even release firmware.
http://update.archos.com/9/gen9/gen9_3.1.11/firmware_archos_it4.aos
Now the question is... Can anyone get into the .aos files?
I figured I'd share with the community here. This information was brought to my attention from another user at the ArchosFans forum (Bobo, a new user there).

Before anyone posts "no, you can't get into it", remember this is an unknown firmware, it could use a different public key, no key, who knows. So unless you can test the gen7 method or a new brute method, don't just post "no".

where did you get these from?

The link that they're hosted on. Right from Archos' update site.

I wonder is the "v2" could just mean the second beta for the new firmware.

That's kind of what I'm leaning towards, as the firmware numbering scheme matches up with what should be next for Gen8 devices.
The only problem is that it won't install, it gives an error saying it's for a different device. Maybe Archos did that so even if we found unreleased firmware, we couldn't install it.

That's what I'm thinking too. I bet they have developer models with different IDs that it will install on. I'm really hoping it's our new firmware...

The world needs more optimists

The new firmware for gen8 isn't Honeycomb, because the gen9 Honeycomb firmare is about 160MB and the gen8's is only 86MB

yea, but we do need at least gingerbread, otherwise that frontfacing camera is pretty much useless

Or it could be a firmware for the recently announced Archos 70b or whatever it's called.... the upcoming budget tablet, clearly with it's thumb in the Kindle Fire's eye, running Honeycomb but based on the original Gen8 hardware.

i cant wait to get this firmware.......ive only had my tab for 1 month and im using adw right now.....

Flash Samsung firmware without Odin?

Sorry if this has already been answered.. I would like to flash some custom rom but in order to do so I have to upgrade my firmware version (which is I9000XXJF3 at the moment.) I have a rooted device and I have successfully flashed ROM manager and recovery image - ClockworkMod). But I believe it is not possible to use that tool in order to flash Samsung firmware upgrade. Am I wrong?
I cannot use odin as I am not a windows user. and Odin drivers are not at all installed on my vmware fusion XP virtual machine.
Is there ANY other way to do firmware upgrade without using Odin?
any help appreciated.
And a huge thanks to all the community.
I haven't found a way. though I do have a copy of windows laying around for testing web apps which is how I ended up flashing my sgs.
It'd be interesting if someone knows the protocol Odin and Kies use to connect with the device or at least maybe generate a common effort to reverse it so we can build drivers and a flash utility for other platforms
as far as i know, this it is not possible at the moment. i am no windows user myself but i managed to get odin running with a windozeXP running on a virtualbox under a ubuntu 10.04 guest os.
yeah, it's a pain in the ass but as soon as standalone custom roms appear we won't need odin any more. flashing out of the recovery makes much more sense!

you could try to sniff the traffic on the usb port to reverse-engineer the protocol, but i guess it's not worth the effort because of the reason i stated above...

That it does, but that never stopped fastboot from being your best friend if anything went wrong. It's a pity Odin isn't as simple as fastboot, or that the SGS isn't fastboot-compatible. Sigh.
true. any clue when such roms are hittin the road?

i hope soon. samsung put the source on their site but nothing yet. makes me wondering ... i am currently trying to compile the kernel myself but it doesn't work out of the box with the information they provided, the build scripts are a little messed up... but i think it can not be long before someone cooks something up. there are also rumors that someone of the cyanogen-mod team started with the sgs
edit: i downloaded the source again today. it's some mb's bigger and this time it compiles like my gentoo in the good ol' day's

Search the forum here, there's a guy posting an ALPHA of some cross platform thing to replace Odin in just the last day or two. Last I read (yesterday or the day before) it was still windows only for testing, but he may have an OS X version out sooner than later.
It's called Heimlich or something along those lines...one of the Norse gods as he explains it.

Yeah Heimdall not Heimlich
I actually made the first alpha release a while ago and have posted several updates since then. Anyway I'm releasing alpha 6 now (still Windows only). Once I can get some testers to test the Windows alpha 6 I will be making a official beta release for all platforms and I'll be releasing the source code.
????
I new to flashing roms to the Vibrant, but WTF is odin, the only I can think of right of bat is a norse god or something like that.

New ROM I8700XXKH2 [SamFirmware] But...

Files in the ROM are not signed... SamFirmware looking for a solution because this ROM may contain MANGO (specific to the Omnia 7).

It's actually so easy to know the exact build of Mango that it contains just dump the VersionID.txt from the IMGFS with HTCRIE as it contains all the compilation information.
someone has a link ?
I can't find it on samfirmware.
ROM is not deployed at this time because the files are not signed.
SamFirmware are looking for a solution for that ROM can be flashed.
what approximate date of Mango release??

Found KD1 on Samfirmware but it doesn't like my Onmia.....KH1 not in the list of download options, maybe a news article?
KD1 is signed by WP_ENGINEER certificate (or whatever, but it can't be flashed on our devices with our current SPL). The same is probably the KH2 ROM. If it was at least on their website, I could check whether it is Mango or not and whether I should mess with it around or not
The ROM I8700XXKH2 will not release !
What about power users?
This version will be release soon. With new radio and MANGO.
http://www.samfirmware.com/apps/blog/show/8355882-windows-phone-7-5-omnia-7
And for information there is another version for dev : ROM I8700XXKI1
If I understand the blog post correctly, they say, that they could not release WP7_PRODUCT ROM, so they released only WP7_ENGINEER.
If I had spare Omnia, I would give it a try, but I don't have one.
Hmm. I wonder if this one will have the new localized display languages?
Samsung could make a case in court against us.
Because the roms are officialy not released by Samsung we can't do this.
The only thing we can do is releasing the rom so you guys can try it by yourself.

Okay, me and Ceesheim are trying out something.
There is .cab.pks file in the update, that contains only OEM specific updates:
http://clip2net.com/s/19zi6
(left extracted ROM, right the update package for the same item)
Ceesheim is trying to flash it through "Zune", I don't have spare phone to mess around on
Will keep you posted.
// The only thing that might be problem is the Radio (PHONE) part, as that one is not updated. Yet we update RIL in one of the packages :/.
so as far as I understood they released a rom BUT no one can install it because it is only for engineer phones? what are we supposed to do with this release????
f5 f5 f5 f5... waiting for news!
Actually
the enclosed .cab.pks contains everything - new bootloader (5.3.0.8 - but BE WARNED, it might be LOCKED TO WP7_ENGINEER RATHER WP7_PRODUCT! So further flashing Retail ROMs might be blocked!), new radio (2424.11.7.2) and the new drivers set (2424.11.8.2).
The update was succesfully deployed, and the phone booted fine.
Ceesheim is still trying some functions (phone, SMS) and I am trying to take out the new bootloader from the update package.
Yes, as I was afraid, it flashed WP7_ENGINEER bootloader onto the phone with the rest of the stuff too.
Until I can figure out which package contains it, DO NOT FLASH IT! or you will be locked to ENGINEER ROMs only!

Honeycomb official update question

http://www.androidcentral.com/dell-streak-7-honeycomb-update-has-arrived-some
So is this upgradable only from froyo, or can it be used to update from the Honeystreak? Haven't looked at all the details yet, as I'm still at work.
Thanks if you find anything out gang.
Update:
Moved thread from Dev to General
That makes no sense that it's only upgradeable from GB seeing as gb for s7 never existed
Proof or its not happening.
Iv got s7 wifi from uk but still says no update
What im worryed about its that my service tag has changed to the usa version
My s7 wifi says no update still
wonder if stage ui makes it over to honeycomb
It should, the s10 has stageui 1.7 and it's highly likely the s7 will too.
I did a write up here if anyone is interested in knowing the difference between the various stageui versions.
cool so stageui 1.7, you can use stage widgetswith any launcher?
You're all over this stuff TheManii..
on any HC device yes, it's not available yet though as no dump is available yet
it wont work on anything before 3.0
how would I even update this if and when it does come out?
I wonder how long it will take a mod to come and move this to general where it belongs When I first saw the thread title "Honeycomb official update" and it was in development I got excited thinking I'd find a link to a system dump or something.. But it was not related to development at all.. bummer. OP should get stoned to death for getting people excited.. hehehe
Instead of throwing rocks you can throw your s7's at him, dont mind me if i catch one and take it to dev on

Thanks for the link! However, when you go to install it, it says that it's a model mismatch in Android recovery.
any ideas?
I'll start preparing it, i KNEW that it was due to another unknown rom version.
The device version is different too, it's GLUNB1A2, vs GLUNB1A1 for normal wifi/3-4g devices and rom version 340.
Is that from your S7 Xi2Wicked?
If it is could you make a nandroid/nvflash dump before updating? as 340 for this device revision (and in general) hasnt been dumped

[Q] HTC M8 to dual boot Android and Windows

Hi Everyone
Just read on several sites how the latest model for Verison will Dual boot into Windows 8.1 and Android.
Is there a way to add this to the existing / original Android M8
Where did you read that?
Theres no way they would release a verison with 2 operating systems especially when android has been widly available for the device. Theres currently no version of a bootloader that has the right environment for windows adding an android boot to there bootloader "to try and even get back to android" Unfortunetly android is open sourse and windows is not, they would have to release there sourcecode to the developing world if they wanted to dual boot with android and they wont. so its up to us to exctract it on our end to make android 's boot loader able to dual boot into windows and hopefully find a way to get back.

it's not the source code which Needs to be released...it's the bootloader which Needs to be extracted and opened to get it working on the android Version! and that's difficult unless someone like cotulla will work on it!
Agreed im just saying we wouldnt need to extract it if they just handed it to us to work with and i hope cotulla does!

From http://www.anandtech.com/show/8390/htc-announces-the-htc-one-m8-for-windows
For some users the most exciting prospect of the HTC One (M8) for Windows may come from the fact that it shares the same hardware as the One (M8). It's possible that the developer community will be able to load the firmware from the HTC One (M8) onto the device in a dual boot configuration with Windows Phone 8 so users can switch between the operating systems as they please.

This is one of those, "Well it might be possible to if developers can figure it out" quotes. As the others have posted, there will be no absolute easy way to do this and a lot of the pains will be on the bootloader side. If someone DOES happen to figure it out, I don't see it happening for a LONG time (This also counts as hope for someone to prove me wrong ). We can only be hopeful that HTC failed to lock down something they should have done.
The HD2 was like the holy grail and I don't see that same sort of configuration happening again.
Htc has in m8 wp8.1 version something like s-off for android devices...in one m8 wp8.1 forum there is a thread where a guy is writing about the whole thing why it won't be that easy to mod the OS etc
I'm a daily "hourly" reader of engadget and they have posted about the version with windows but Verison is not releasing a dual boot version it is up to us to make that happen! Read alittle more carfully before making assumptions. Its possible "maybe" but its allot of work as snickler said its saying whats possible not whats out. Also im with One-M8-Master on this one, check out the thread it should clear a few things up on the boot loader side. lets all hope someone gets lucky and does it!

Even, if there were developing in progress, I doubt, that someone will say that. There was no info to community, when HubCap was in develop. Developers surely don't want to give away any info to Google before release of new root method (if there will be any).
If you want to rooted Chromecast, I will advice to buy some older NIB CC, before new updated version will spread everywhere.
