[Q] Froyo vs Gingerbread App compatibility - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How's it going this weekend XDA?
I popped the AT&T 2.3.3 Rom and it is working really nicely. I am a minimalist by nature and I feel the stock ROMs stripped of bloatware are the simplest and sweetest when you balance function and aesthetics.
However, after a few weeks on this ROM, I am noticing some issues where Froyo and Gingerbread overlap. I know that many Froyo apps are not designed for, or in some cases, updated to support Gingerbread. However, these apps seem to run fine on my Gingerbread setup after I restored them from my TiBu backup. However, when I search for the app in Marketplace, they do not show up.
The root of the issue is that I have a Blueant T1 Bluetooth headset that is supposed to be able to auto update it's firmware through the Android app. When the headset is connected, the app indicates that the firmware can be updated and it should do so automatically. However, when you cliock on the link to update, it says that the app doesn't exist in the marketplace, presumably the problem is that my device does not officially support Gingerbread and the conflict might thereby wipe the app from the Marketplace. I can see that the app is there in the Marketplace when I am not logged in via my phone(ie on the pc), but if I try to download it it disappears.
I have also noticed this with other apps, ie Google Body. It apparently needs Gingerbread to function, but 'My device is not supported'.
Any thoughts? Is it that my phone is sending it's model and make which is not compatible, or that the discrepancy between what I should have on the phone vs what I do have doesn't jive with the Marketplace?
Am I facing a build.prop tweak or is there another way to work around this? Any and all input will be useful.
Thanks!

Locale won't let me add location condition

I rooted my phone for the first time this weekend and loaded Cyanogen MOD. Everything is working GREAT, except for one issue with Locale. When I go in to setup a a new situation it won't let me add a location condition. I hit the "Add Condition" button, hit Location, and all it does is go to a black screen for a second or two and then takes me back to the "edit situation" screen. After I hit location it looks like it's trying to load the normal location select screen but can't for some reason. Anyone ever see this or have any ideas why it might be doing that? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
The app has worked flawlessly for me and I have always had root but I think the latest update made this feature not work which is unfortunate.
I installed the 4.0.2 Cyanogen ROM yesterday and setup a new location in Locale as recently as an hour ago. Do try an uninstall and reinstall of locale and make sure you're running the latest version of Google Maps.
I already tried un/reinstall of Locale to no avail. I just tried un/reinstalling Google Maps as well, but that didn't work either.
Any other ideas?
Try opening google maps and finding your location in there first. I did that and it magically started working again.
So, nothing I tried worked (even opening google maps first). I started to get more suspicious when I noticed a few other map-enabled apps would work as well (mymaps editor, weatherbug, etc). So I decided there must either be something wrong with the version of the ROM I loaded or something else I had done messed up something with the maps. Loaded the latest version of cyanogen and now it works great. Go figure.
Thanks for all the suggestions anyway.
According to the developers website they know about the issue and its being blamed on people with rooted phones. Their solution is to go back to an OEM build of Android which is total bull**** so I sent them an email letting them know.
"Why can't I open Locations after the latest update?
This happens frequently on rooted phones, phones running unofficial installations of Android, or phones modified in some non-standard way (e.g. running apps off of the SD card). Try restoring your phone to an officially supported version of Android."

Locations doesn't work on hacked phones, because the Android on these phones has a problem loading the Google Maps libraries. This is NOT a bug in Locale, and there is no code change in Locale that would fix the issue.
In order to investigate this issue, I've taken these steps:
1. Contact Google: Initially, this appeared to be a bug in Android. Google investigated and found that only hacked phones had problems, at which point they considered the issue closed.
2. Contact Steve Kondik (e.g. Cyanogen): He is looking into issue, but I haven't heard anything further from him.
At this point, there's just nothing else I can do. I can only suggest reverting to an official version of Android.

Market missing some applications

I'm running eVil D's NXSense ROM on my N1 and I've noticed that some applications are missing from the Android Market.
The ones I've found so far are:
- Moviefone (com.aol.mobile.moviefone)
- FCC Mobile Broadband Test (com.ookla.fccbroadband)
- Slacker Radio (com.slacker.radio)
- Parcels (eu.zomtec.android.delivery)
Any ideas why I wouldn't be able to access these applications?
were you able to get them earlier from your region or not? The applications might not be available in your current location- if its that you can try MarketEnabler app to sort it out!
I'm not sure as I hadn't tried to installing them until after I had installed NXSense.
My phone is configured for US as far as I know.
I'll try MarketEnabler and see how it goes
Looks like that was the problem. I forgot that I'm currently using an Australian SIM so the apps weren't visible. As soon as I changed the phone to use T-Mobile US, the missing apps appeared.

[Q] T-Mobile Market Imitate

Before I returned it a couple months ago I had an application on the captivate that would allow me to install apps from the Market AT&T had blocked. Now, I believe what it would do is clone a certain value on the phone and make google's market think I was a T-Mobile user trying to connect. (Or any of the other carriers I could choose from)
Does anyone use this or can recall what it is called? I seem to have forgotten and can't find it through my searching.
Or, can anyone give me a better to way to install applications. I like this method because it makes for easy updating.
Thanks!
It is called Market Access. It is not something you can get on the Android Market. I got mine in previous ROM's that would have it included. This was before they would script market access into the ROM on its own.

Thanks guys! I'm using cognition 2.1.5. Do you know if its scripted in?
I'm getting an error message even with cognition when trying to install AT&T blocked apps.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
will this work with froyo
Yes, works with Froyo. However, it seems that you can't have opened the Market first before enabling Market Access- if Market had been opened, the phone needs to be rebooted and then T-Mobile has to be emulated first. Then it worked fine.

flash 10.2 from market...no beta or leaks here

I know many have been eagerly awaiting the 10.2 flash release. when i searched market on my gtab i could not find it today like i could on my captivate which conviently updated to 2.2 today (joy!!). Long over due ATT...
anyways since the stars lined up just right i thought i would leave the .apk up here for all. i have run this and it is flawless on cnn....no more hiccups or freezing like previous versions!
Thank you so much for this. I couldn't find it either running calkulins rom
try going to market.android.com. I found it there and tagged for download to my "G" ( running Vegan 5.1 ) loaded and runs fine.
Thanks for the apk. I used to be able to see flash in the market, in fact that is where I installed 10.1 from. I'm on the new vegan and I could see the xoom games as well but I couldn't see some other stuff I wanted like evernote and dolphin. Online market just blocks me with compatibility errors. After doing some messing I got it so I can see those things but no longer can I see flash or the xoom/tiaga games. I can't even upgrade flash through market even though I installed it from there. Google's dictatorship over the market is in its own way is as messed up as Apple's market censorship and it is downright frustrating and disappointing. So again, thanks. I've tried to get my market back to displaying what it originally displayed but not luck. Either way I'm still only able to enjoy half the android experience.

Thanks OP.
Yes, I agree with you. Market originally let me dl Cordy, but now since it has been updated for more gameplay its not in native market, and its not compatable with online market.

[Q] Newly rooted 1.2 nook color - did I do it wrong?

So, bought a nook color yesterday. It came loaded with 1.2, and the first thing I did after registering is root. No custom ROM, but have superruser and official Android Market access. I can even install a few apps. However, there are a few that I expected to see (Kindle, Astro in particular) that dont show up via a specific search for them in the Market. Did I do something wrong? Did I somehow half-root this? Any thoughts would be appreciated!
There are issues with the market after rooting. One of the devs seems to have finally figured it out (apparently it's been quite a ***** to sort out), but he's validating it before publishing it.
Same problem
I have the same problem with the market place. Where will the fix be posted?
After manual rooting Calendar issues
After doing the manual root the one application that seems to be the trouble for me is Calendar. The Google Calendar does not allow to add an account calendar to use. I have tried several other applications with no luck either. One indicates there is a issue synch information.
Then the other minor issue is within the Market has been fun. While in the Market it will decide to either go back a screen, go to the main area of the Market or exit completely out of the Market. That created issue when I was in the middle of downloading an application.
Any suggestions? The Calendar is more important but it would be nice to get both issues resolved.
This worked great for me.

The Calendar issue was resolved with CalenGoo. It is able to synch and update information.
Market is getting better with the steps.
Let the fun begin.
found this
