[Q] [REQUEST] Can anyone make a mod/fix for wi-fi dropping at -88dBM? - HTC Incredible S

Hi All,
I originally posted a thread about this in the General forum, but no-one seems to know how to fix, so I'm hoping one of the super-smart developers can have a go here...
Basically, since the upgrade from Froyo to Gingerbread, the wi-fi now drops at -88dBM even when there is a perfectly useable signal/connection.
Previously I could pick up much weaker wi-fi signals as this cut-off wasn't in place. I now struggle with wi-fi at home (even with a router that's only some metres away downstairs) and in hotels, with the wi-fi dropping out if the phone's held in a certain way etc. Incredibly annoying!
Someone on the Desire HD forum found the code snippet where it mentions the -88 figure, and has managed to change/remove this. It is suggested that this code "error" is part of a Broadcom driver update.
Is anyone able to create a similar uploadable mod for the Incredible S? It doesn't seem to have been incorporated into any of the custom ROMs available, and won't be fixed by HTC either by the looks of things. It's a big problem which many users have encountered since the Gingerbread upgrade.
My original post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1132261
Desire HD thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1058450
Code snippet: https://github.com/LeeDroid-/Ace-2.6.35/blob/master/drivers/net/wireless/bcm4329_204/dhd_cdc.c#L1288
Hope someone can come up with a solution.
Thanks.

Just noticed there is also a thread and fix for the Desire S, that offsets the threshold value.
Desire S thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1051674
Hope someone can implement a fix for this phone then...

What I have noted when I have tested different ROMs is that with MIUI this problem wasn't. WIFI Connection was more stable and never drops. Might the fix has already implemented there?

I would like this to be cracked by the developers here too, if they can find a way

at cyanogenmod it doesnt drop
but somehow i want to use android revolution hd, without the wifi drop issue

I've mentioned it to Mike1986 (creator of Android Revolution) a fair few times but he doesn't seem interested in fixing it which is a shame. Hence why I am appealing to the other developers on here to fix.
If it's been done on Desire S and Desire HD, why not this phone?

as far as i know it's a kernel issue
so the unity kernel must be changed

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1058450&page=7
read that thread, basically to be used it has to be made into the kernel

That's strange - some people say it needs to be built into the kernel, however if you look on the Desire S forum (link provided in first posts), they have a fix included in one of the ROMs, and the kernel is the same one the Inc S uses, from MDJ.

Ill make the edit to -108 from snq's tread and Ill post a test kerenl for you guys to test and let me know if it worked. Look for it this afternoon US time Id say about 4pm.

So many hero rom's, still no bluetooth?

I really appreciate all the developers for there hard work. I just dont understand why they make back to back hero roms, slightly better then the other, still with no bluetooth. They all appear to be fast. I'm not posting this to discuss the speed of one hero rom vs another, but seriously. Let get that bluetooth working!
go check out towards the last few pages of the bluetooth in hero thread the shafty023 (can't recall exact digits) started, bluetooth works in the mytouch, but not in the dream, despite them having almost similar hardware, there is a slight difference in the bluetooth (or something) chip that is causing it not to work on the dream but in the mytouch. that thread explains it a lot better than i can.
its not that people don't want to get it working, its just very hard and doesn't actually pay as opposed to other things that do.
I've gone back to trusty Donuts, currently WG Build Y2.6 - btw, great work guys! - but I'm still looking for my HERO. Such a great accomplishment with all development attempts, monkeying around to achieve variety of flavors.
But no sound via bluetooth is a deal breaker for me. I have yet to find ONE hero that would give mytouch the sound via bluetooth.

New ROM batches = bluetooth on G1?

All,
I know there are a bunch of folks out there with Tattoo and Hero 2.1 dumps cooking up some great new things. I was wondering, though - does any of this, especially Hero 2.1, offer hope to get BT working on G1s or will we face the same problems we did with the previous versions?
Thanks,
Vj99
firstly, this should really be in the QnA section
it is possible that bluetooth will be working to some extent now that the heros kernel source has been made open source
but we will probably need to wait for HTC to make the source available for 2.1
so probably not til its officially released unless there is some jiggery-pokery that can be done to make it work
I never could understand people's need to install proprietary UI's on their phones. And that is the only reason for possibly trying to install one of those incompatible builds.
Just stick with a build designed for DREAM and your bluetooth (as well as everything else) will work perfectly. No reason to beat your head against the wall when there is nothing to gain from it.
Always welcome people weighing in, but that said I have to say that any value of the replies is tempered by unnecessary comments about one's opinion that this should be elsewhere or wondering why someone would want something.
In short, I could phrase the same question 10 other ways and make it a development question. I also find other capabilities in these other firmwares that I value, so it is much more than a UI update.

[Q] Is there a fix for wi-fi dropout at -88dBM?

Hi All,
I'm wanting to know if there is a fix for the wi-fi dropping perfectly useable signals at -88dBM since HTC's Gingerbread update?
I am now S-OFF and rooted, and have recently installed Android Revolution HD as my ROM, as this promised 'improved wi-fi drivers', but this sadly hasn't included a fix for this issue.
I would've thought this would be top of the list for developers as there have been many complaints by users since 'upgrading' from Froyo.
Any advice would be appreciated...
Many thanks.
Anyone? This is a major issue for me.
i think its an issue with all gingerbread roms, maybe you could try turning "best wifi performance" on.
i thought maybe it was working for me as i think it dropped less, it does use considerably more battery though.

That's the main reason I have S-OFFed my phone, and since then I have tried a lot of updates ( Roms, Kernels, Radios...), without any luck so far.
Returning to Froyo may be our best bet but I do not know if it is feasible yet.
Yes, I thought this would've been a quick fix for the developers.
If I can downgrade to Froyo, I will do so in an instant!
Did anyone find a workaround for the wifi issue ? I am quite surprised that there aren't more people complaining about it...
+1
And when ever anyone asks about it, there is deadly silence. I would have thought that some of the excelent devs on here would at least have some opinions to share on possible ways forward or not ?

[Q] question about rooting my nexus one

OK.guys I have a stock n1 running 2.3.6 but I am tired of the wifi issue my question is if I root does this fix the issue and also what are the benefits of rooting and which is the best method and rom
Thanks in advance
Can't answer for certainty because we don't know if your problem is software or hardware related.

my wifi keep on droping off when i google it i see its a problem with the n1
hope this helps
I haven't run stock since Froyo came out, but I haven't had any issues with my wifi, so if it is an issue with software, it doesn't seem like it exists in CyanogenMod. But as baseballfanz mentioned, it is too difficult to determine whether your issue is hardware or software. If it is software, it should be fixed. The two most popular custom ROMs are CyanogenMod and MIUI. I know CyanogenMod covers a lot of the additional features on their website, I am not sure about MIUI, but both probably include better perfomance and battery life, along with a ton of extra features.
Never had any WiFi issues myself or heard of anyone else having any with the N1. I suppose you could TRY another rom but I'm not sure if that would work. If you do I would recommend a cyanogenmod simply because theres so many people using that if anyone else has had this issue its probably been reported and solved if it was a software problem. Always worth a hot and if nothing else theres more to do with a rooted phone anyway.
Good luck, hope you'll let us know how you get on.

There are many people reporting Wi-Fi issues on the Nexus One on a stock ROM after the 2.3.6 update. Many threads in this forum, as well as google's support forum...
Root anyway
Too many benefits and too much fun not to--
Full image backups
Better app managemet

[Q] Might CyanogenMod damage the Wi-Fi Module?

Hello everybody,
I'm not sure if this is the right section which i'm posting in, but as i couldn't find a more suitable place I'll ask my question here.
2 Weeks ago i acquired a Samsung GT-I9301I Phone, i'm completely new to Android as my Company phone is a BlackBerry. The Phone itself seems really good but the whole Software Bundle (Bloat-Ware) that come with Samsung Devices were pretty annoying. So i started some research on the Internet concerning Custom ROM's and found a Thread here with CyanogenMod 11 suitable for my Device. So i flashed it onto my Phone, and i'm quite impressed of the work @Rox has done.
Yesterday i had a conversation with a Friend of mine in Germany who works for Samsung Mobile, especially the Cellphone Repair Section. I told him what I've done. And he told me that sooner or later my Wi-Fi Module will stop working because the CyanogenMod will Damage/Destroy it. He told me that they receive lots of Devices with this problem and that it is definitely a problem caused by that Mod.
ACTUAL QUESTION:
Has anyone encountered such problems or heard of it before? Would be nice to collect information on this, if it's really caused by the CyanogenMod. And if, then maybe we together can relay the information we gather to the CyanogenMod Team for further discussion and problem solving...
Thx ahead, Steve
Whelp, I've used CM on my old HTC Sensation for years, never encountered any problem with the modules for sure :/
Is your buddy really serious? Because I haven't heard about a device damaged by that
Hi,
indeed he's serious he won't make jokes on that.
Before me posting here and opening this thread I've also done intensive search on the internet, but i couldn't find anything concerning the mentioned problem.
So the question now is: WTH did screwed those devices he's talking about. And if you're saying that you also never heard of something like that and you're using CM yourself for several years, then it brings me to only one answer.
Rookies with no experience are flashing their devices and that maybe because of missing knowledge/understanding something gone wrong during their attempt's to flash the Custom ROM's...?!?

WiFi Modules need to be compiled with kernel.
If those aren't flashed after flashing a mod or custom kernel, WiFi won't work.
If a rookie won't flash kernel modules then it's his mistake.
Hi..
That's maybe really the reason. I'm using CM since 3 day's now and haven't encountered any Wi-Fi problems except a maybe weaker signal strength.
OK 3 day's isn't that long so I'll keep my eyes and ears open, and will follow this "Rumor". As anything happens I'll report it here.
Everyone a Merry Xmas!

I don't believe you'll encounter any problems, it's just important to flash the right files, is all
And no, signal is not weaker, AOSP has different parameters for measuring signal strength, and I believe it's more accurate than manufacturers ROMs (saw this info somewhere on the forum, don't remember where)
And merry Christmas you good XDA user
How can software physically damage hardware? The only way I can think of actually damaging the wifi module is if the phone is dropped, gotten wet, or run so much that heat fries.
I'm thinking the same concerning the Overstress / Overheating otherwise no idea. Working in IT business myself and that's the only reasonable explanation for Hardware damage.
The other question is if it's software related than it's only possible as mentioned before, that the module driver isn't correctly compiled / implemented into the kernel. And therefore the module just isn't working instead of destroyed.
As those devices aren't being repaired by my friend cause of void warranty, it's still an open question if the modules Hardware damaged or just aren't working...

Well, unless your friend is completely a idiot (no offense...) software can't do harm to hardware...Overheating may cause real issue but in reality I have owned dozen of devices from old HD2 to new Z3, all run custom ROM but never encounter single hardware error, only some minor button damage....
