Cheap hardware fault... - LG Optimus Black

I've had my optimus black for a few hours now and i'm really liking the screen!
I bought it after being slightly disappointed with the screen and speaker on my desire S (which I still have).
I'm a bit disappointed with the plastic feeling though, and i'm getting a "grip of death" problem with 3G when holding it with my left hand (it loses 2-3 bars compared to holding it in my right hand).
Also i've just noticed a build quality issue on mine, the grill that covers the earpiece has fallen down. I can lift it back up with a pin, but it quickly falls back down again. It looks like the glue didn't work. There is also a small imperfection in the glass right underneath the earpiece. Pic is attached.
Has anybody else had any issues with the cheap build quality?

I've had no real issues with the build quality.
I do hear a very light squeaking sound when I squeeze the right side of my phone, the plastic side of the back cover.
I'm also happy to know that the LG Optimus Black also has Gorilla Glass (discussed here and listed here).
You may want to return your phone for a replacement if the grill keeps coming off.

Ouch, now I'm chicken out to buy this phone.
Iphone4like antenna problem? Bad building quality? (with the known aspect ratio issue) Eeerrrrr, I think I'll choose another one.

I have no issues so far. I hold the phone with right hand i can't replicate the issue. I'm actually quite impressed with the durability considering the plastic nature of it.

so you think it's not a general issue, with the death grip?

This is my first Android phone so i have nothing else to compare to, but it seems i don't lose any signal holding it. But i do have smallish hands so it might be just that.
So don't take my word for it

Repairs?

Hey Guys,
The front of my diamond is in pretty bad condition. Well it looks fine when you glance on it but on further inspection there are many scratches on the screen including a big one in the top right hand corner. I have noticed that there seems to be a thin glass panel over the actual screen, Is it possible to get this replaced with a panel which is scratch free?
Furthermore, my speaker is buggered. My mate read some article on the internet saying that if you smear your phone with toothpaste then it removes scratches. Unfortunately he decided to try it. The toothpaste has got into the ditch where the speaker is and it's clearly blocked up. I can just about hear the phone when I am indoors and there is no noise but when outdoors I cannot hear a thing. It was a bit too quiet for my liking before anyway. Where can I get the speaker replaced preferably with a louder speaker?
I'm new to repairing phones as I usually just buy a new one if something goes wrong but I like my diamond
Any Suggestions?
Too bad for the toothpaste there are polishing fluids for sale which seem to work, although i wouldn't try it. Seems to mee you could ask HTC if you're really interested in spare parts ?

Does anyone have creaking sound without raised glass?

When I press(with a bit more force) on the left side I hear creaking noise, is that normal or not?
I don't have raised glass problem.

I have 2 Nexus 7. My Nexus 7 has a minor screen lift, but it's not noticeable. But yea it has the creaking noise near the upper left area. But then again I shouldn't like be putting that much force on the screen so I'm not too worried. My sister's Nexus 7 has no issues with either.
One of the mine did but it seems okay. That's why I think it is the back cover. Because of mine would squeak only if I held it from the back in certain areas. If I held if from another place on the back it wouldn't squeak like holding it from the other side and pushing down then the squeak would be gone. Mine usually would squeak right where the volume of buttons were.
Mine does the same no noticeable screen lift but it will creak if you press too hard on the left side

yes.
on the left side of mine its the screen that is raised and creeks. on the right side i think its the back cover that is causing the creeking
I had the creak, it drove me nuts. My screen didn't lift at all. I returned it for a new one with no creak and no screen lift.

You had to apply not a lot of pressure if it drove you nuts right? And you RMA yours for that single reason?

I bought mine locally at Sam's, so it was just a matter of taking it back to the store. I bought a new one at Staple's first as they got a new shipment in...of only one.
There was enough movement to make me uncomfortable with it. Not only did it creak on that lower left side with some slight pressure, I could also feel movement when I pressed on the lower left of the screen. Not like squishy movement, just a weird shifting noise.
It's as if the case was a little too large or slightly warped somewhere. I didn't have to press very hard at all to make that sound and it did it naturally if I picked it up from the side. I tend to be OCD so something like that is just one of those things I would fixate on. I also had a dead pixel so the combo was enough to take a trip to Sam's to return it and Staple's for a new one. The difference is night and day with the new one though, it feels so much more sturdy without the noises.
I ordered a case to try and ignore it, but that is still on it's way so the return was kind of an impulse. Honestly if your screen is fine otherwise and you aren't OCD like me, it shouldn't be a deal breaker IMO. Unless a swap is easy, but things could always be worse.
Mine does same, no lift but squeaks with little pressure.
This squeak is because of that black tap that you can see once you open your nexus. At least this was the case with me. The sponge on the top of tape presses the tape when you press the device on left side. I fixed it by removing that foam. I am not recommending anyone to do it as that foam must be there for some reason either to cater for the flex in back cover or something but this was driving me crazy so I removed it. Please don't do it because I am saying this as you might have some different problem. This was my problem and this is how I fix it.

Mine has a slight creak but only when I apply a moderate-high amount of pressure at a certain spot, which I don't feel comfortable doing anyway. Haven't taken the back off but not sure if I will tbh, using a case can alleviate some display issues I.e. screen rising and sight creaks.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
Mine has a clicking kind of sound on the left side and the glass depress's about 13/100ths of a MM with little to no force and it was an open box. I will bring mine back as soon as I find a store with another one in stock. I also didn't get the 25$ credit on my Google Play account because the person who bought and returned it took the credit...
My main concern is for dust getting under the glass. If the screen has any kind of travel like mine does I can only assume that it may suck some dust in and under the glass in-between the display and the glass. I don't know if the display is fused to the glass like my Gnex.
I've found that taking the back cover off and putting a single, small piece of electrical tape near the edges in the areas that squeek eliminates the creak. If you have creaking in areas other than the left area where there's screen lift, it's most likely caused by the back cover not fitting perfectly against he device. I put some small pieces of electrical tape in the top right corner and along the bottom right side of my Nexus 7, and it has just about eliminated all creaking.
Mine creaked around the edges til I pressed down hard on them to clip it more securely in place. I've no other issues and the screen is great.

My third replacement has creak with no lift at all.

My second Nexus 7 has no screen lift but the power button clicks loudly when depressed about as loud as a typical space bar. Loud enough that others in my office can tell when I turn the screen on. The vol. rocker does not make the same click sound it sounds and works like the first Nexus 7 I owned. I don't think the louder click from the power button is a big deal and will likely get less loud with use.
Hi!
I got my Nexus 7 yesterday and I dont have the raised glass but I have a creaking noise when pressing down the glass on the left side of the tablet. When I press the glass it creaks and after a second or so you here a popping sound. This is the only issue I have with my Nexus 7. You guys think I should return it and get a replacement or is this normal? It only happen when I press down harder than normal.

I have the same problem and am trying to decide if its screen lift or just some weird noise. Advice guys?
Same problem - I've had this issue since I got my Nexus 7 two weeks ago and so far nothing terrible has happened.

Quality feel (use of materials)

Rate this thread to express how you think the HTC 10 feels in terms of quality. A higher rating indicates that it feels premium and high-quality (attention to detail is high, manufacturing defects don't exist, etc).
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
My home-button/fingerprint sensor seems to be loose, after a while of not touching it the first touch seems to depress it back into place and then its fine for a while.

Same here. I thought it's just me. Feels annoyed at first. I can't stand if something wrong happened with my phone (especially hardware issue). Usually I'm thinking to sell it and buy a new one.
But for this issue, I think i already get used to it.

Same on the loose home button
But i guess its not that bad as i forgot about it for the last 2 weeks...
Screen defect is horrible, design wise could've been 2mm thinner.
What screen defect are you referring to and is this a widespread issue?
My vibrator motor became loose one night, i only had it for 20 days tops and never dropped it

Hello,
I have the same issue. My Home/fingerprint button is loose from the center to the left.
When I push it, I sometimes here crunchy noises (rarely when I put my thumb on it which is enough to unlock the phone).
The home button and the fingerprint sensor are both working fine so I won't send it back for now but this is an annoying detail (I can't stop thinking about this when I look at my phone ).

I generally love this phone. The feel of the case is great and the glass screen is equally smooth. My only complains are:
1. Camera bump. I hate using a case, but I feel like I'm going to scratch / break my camera off because of how it sticks out of the back of the phone.
2. The sharp edges on the bottom, specifically around the USB port cut into my finger when I hold the phone.
3. While I think it looks fine on the Carbon Grey, the plastic strip along the top looks bad on the Silver version of the phone.
I don't think I would've ever noticed the looseness of the home button had I not read this thread. I never push on it, just lay my finger over it to unlock or go back home so it never occurred to me to check for movement. My screen is great (may have slightly color issues, but I don't really compare it to other devices so it doesn't bother me). The body of the phone to me also seems to be top notch. No chipping or scratches as of yet...my Nexus 6P chipped and bent rather easily and I tend to take care of my phones.
This guy destroys phones and he said the HTC 10 is a Tank.

Perfect so far but I am disappointed with the black coating... a small drop and the bright aluminium shines through immediately... Why dont they mix paint with metal and then shape it instead of coloring if after ... its annoying watching those dents that are super visible just because it is painted :/
because you can just mix paint in with molten aluminum...
I have my 10 since yesterday and I am very happy with the build quality so far. The device has a premium feel to it and it is definitely the best quality smartphone I have ever had (including the iPhone)

Hello, I'm new here, I live in Germany, HTC is not so popular here , so I checked the international forums for information about my HTC 10.
I got my HTC 10 in August and I have the same problem with the home-button/fingerprint sensor. I'm anytime very careful with all my mobiles, so I have no idea why it is happen the same.
May I ask you it is getting worst with the home-button/fingerprint sensor since your last post here?
Sorry for my poor Englsih )

this feel that every flagship phone should have
I have the newly released red one and the power button is a little hard to press, I kinda have to press it with my nail to push it.

no problems typing. very slick. case double thickness of phone. front is thin film. sharp knock on phone by edge of the table will crack the screen. but brilliant piece of engineering. love it.
Hello, I just saw this. I've posted this in one of the other posts. This is my take on the Atomic 2.0::
Just received the Ghostek Atomic 2.0 Case. Even though Screen is not glass does not feel that back. No stickiness like plastic films. But for now just had it on for some hours so can't really say for long run yet.
It is a bit wider like a little over 1/4" more than the UAG case. Which adds to black borders on the front as seen on the pictures. So if you already had trouble using it with one hand, this would cause a bit more trouble.
The thickness is about the same as the UAG case when both are facing screen down.
This case advertises Waterproof but has 2 openings for the speaker grill on top and the home button on bottom. I would expect water could get in through those openings. Screen is dot matrix.
The look of the case for me is nice and does not make it look ugly in my perspective. As because the screen guard as they call it make it look like the screen is showing more than some cases that adds front black plastic borders on top and bottom.
The one thing is you might want to use wireless charging more due to having to open up ports more often if using a usb charger.
Here are some pictures I took. Sorry about quality. The best Camera I have is the GS7 edge. lol.
http://imgur.com/a/osNxm
Right now I'm using it with the TANAAB Screen protector.
I'll post more about it. But first reactions seems to be a good case but would depend on how you would see it and if the 1/4" width bigger than a UAG case would be a drawback or not.
It Seems that Ghostek send several out to Mobilefun or Uviyo in batches but haven't shipped through their main site.
Update:
Update about the openings mentioned above. The waterproof works and does not get inside case if there's nothing that raises the area where the openings are. I had the TANAAB TGSP that doesn't go full length of the phone let water in but when removed and tested no water went in. So waiting to test it with a similar TGSP like GPEL2 that fully extends the the phone and see how that works.
When With TANAAB. Sensitivity didn't change and could provide good protection if needed as the outside screen is just a thin plastic film.
Just wanted to point this out.

Update:
As mentioned sensitivity wasn't a big problem or no problem I've seen.
But because its' a plastic screen I and because of my old TGSP didn't full extend to the end of the phone. I decided to get the Tzunami ProGlass from walmart. Installed it and put the case back on. Which should add extra protection on screen.
Even though responsiveness was good this seem to bump it up a bit more as it sticks more to the plastic and doesn't leave much. Plus you should not have a problem with it breaking as it just sits inside case.
Likely going to put the GPEL2 When I receive it but likely this might be my set up for my phone. The case looks nice and hope this is an improvement from their other cases.
UPDATE: Sensitivity issues as well from others with the ProGlass. So waiting on GPEL2.
2nd update of the case
I forgot to mention, this could be a pro or con depending if you use speaker a lot or not. I do listen at times but most of the times I use bluetooth headphones or speakers so no problem plus sound seems to be extended a bit more.
But the sound from the speaker is somewhat transferred and the back is used to transfer the sound out which would be why they use the type of material for the back. As if you see pictures of it the bottom you won't see a speaker cut out instead it's for the cord. So if you really depend on the sound from the speaker, the sound would be coming from the back of the phone instead of the side. You won't have to worry about covering it with your finger.
It does help when talking to someone on speaker phone, which is an advantage if you sometimes use the speaker phone when on calls at times. Seems to amplify it a bit more but comes from back for music. But haven't seen but haven't tested much on what music could get muffled out due to the way it is done.
Hope this answers or helps some that might wonder about it.

Seems I forgot I still had the AT TGSP and for now no sensitivity issues at all and not like the Proglass has occurred. Will update if it does but for now this would be my combination of screen protector and case.

No it is not really necessary but as others mentioned this is plastic. But I feel that phone is safer if screen is protected by Tempered glass than films or plastic films. As there's no big lip on front and only thing protecting front the the plastic film I just rather be protected than not be.

Hello, Want to update on the case as you read my other post mentioning some openings on the home and earpiece, seems that was a faulty case as was missing films for the waterproofing that it supposed to protect.
Seems my first one was missing the films that go in the earpiece and home button so wasn't fully waterproof but had no sensitivity issues, the next one had high sensitivity issues on the top area where the first one didn't. Ghostek has been nice and quick in sending replacements and honoring their warranties. Right now I have the first one installed until I received the third case. As there is no sensitivity issues.
I did drop the phone from about 4.2 ft high with no damage. The phone fell front side. I do have a tempered Glass installed and no difference with or without on sensitivity. There does not seem to be any damage on the phone or case. The drop was accidental and kind of scary as well when it fell face front. Even though it was on a case. But glad I had the setup I had.
The only drawback I see is that with fingerprints I don't have a problem with the one with no films(1st case) but with the films on(2nd Case) the best way for it to read is putting your finger side ways. Which works all the time when you put your finger sideways but when upwards is a small chance that it would detect or not.
Just received mine today. Spotty fingerprint scanner, the screen has the little dots all over when you shine lights on it or are out in the sun, definitely a loss in touch sensitivity due to the front film not touching the screen unless you press down on it.
Hello friends, my question is, is that possible to call someone while using this case?

I've had no problems when I have good reception. The only times I have problems is when I have 1x when outside in small areas plus work truck kind of blocks signals.
But regular use with not problems on signal, I haven't had any complaints.

Is anyone else's xz1 compact bent or curved?

Is anyone else's xz1 compact body bent or not straight?
I have had mind a couple of weeks and been super careful with it, so I don't think I bent it or something. I didn't notice until today when I set my phone down on a flat table as I was finicking with it when I noticed it rocked back and forth and wasn't perfectly flat to the table. It is particularly noticeable in the front side (I think part of this is due to the edges around the screen not being completely flush or evenly flat. The back does it much less, but I think that may because of the curved back on the back. After looking down the back side of the phone I realized it was clearly not straight and could see It curve.
Anyone with similar issues? Thanks!
The border around the camera lens is protuding a tiny bit from the back of the phone, to protect the lens from scratches.
The top and bottom edges of the phone are protruding to protect the screen from being scratched when placed face down.
Though it does not rock for me.
What sort of curve?
Mine doesn't rock when on its back, and I have a screen protector on the front which is slightly taller than the top and bottom metal caps, so it is also stable.
When I bought my phone in store, per procedure they had me inspect the phone for obvious damage or defects.
The first unit I got unfortunately had assembly issues with the top and bottom metal caps, there was a noticeable gap on both ends and they protruded unevenly. One end protruded to the front, and the other to the back.
At first they tried to play it off as non-issue, citing manufacturing tolerance, and refused to let me exchange a new one, but I insisted and eventually they agreed to give me another unit, which is the one I'm currently using.
Does your unit have similar unevenness with the metal caps? Maybe that's the cause of the instability. I do not perceive any curves on the body of my phone.

I didn't think about the camera, good point, that may be some of the issue when it's on its back. The rocking when it's on its back is mild, so it may be the camera lens ring. However, I can look down the phone close with my naked eye and notice the bend pretty easily.
I do realize the front 'metal caps' protrude a little to protect the screen, but as mhaha says below, those edges are not necessarily uneven. The top metal cap sticks out further, in general, than the bottom. Individually, if I run my finger down the cap edges on the face of the phone I think I can feel where they get closer/further from the screen in places (it is very slight, so maybe that one is more in my head). I also didn't notice the uneven gap edge until you said that, I can't really physically feel that one so I think it's a little less of an issue. But, yes, on the left side of my screen it's super snug up against the side bezel and on the right I can see a very slight gap, in comparison.
My phone rocks bad on its face/front , diagonally from the cameras corner to the corner opposite.
I have actually requested my return (I ordered mine online) and will very likely be sending it back. I am not sure ill get a replacement either, for now just the return.
Thank you both very much!

you may be having this issue?

It's in Japanese but the photo explains, I think.

Yeah, my top metal cap isn't as in line as the bottom, now that I see that. Thanks very much! That would definitely contribute to a wobble on a flat surface.
But, there are still all the other issues I've noted, so I'm quite confident it's a number of issues contributing to it all.
Thanks!

The photo isn't quite a good descriptor of the problem though.
The photo suggests that it's just the way the metal end-caps are installed is what's causing the rocking.
If you run the link through a translator, the author states that the metal caps are misaligned because the plastic/glass-fiber body itself is warped.
So you may want to look at getting the phone replaced.
I dropped my phone on the road 2nd day of use. The metal edge got scratched, but the phone survived. The only other issue I noticed was twisted body. Looking from the edge, the twisted edge was easy to notice, and surface wobble was also there. I held the edges of the phone and put some pressure in opposite direction (trying to twist it back), and now my phone seems straight/aligned).
Please don't try this at home and come complain to me if something goes wrong. Since I dropped my phone, I couldn't just return it and get it replaced. Also not sure if the drop twisted it, or just pressure in my jeans pocket. Also not sure if the twist will come back. For now, the phone is fine.
I just bought XZ1 (not XZ1C) in UK, and having similar issue.
I'm not sure if the "cap" in misplaced or the whole body is twisted, but when I put the device face down, it rocks

Thanks for the further insight, I'm grateful! I will be returning the phone. I'm undecided on whether or not I would like to purchase another after. I kinda wanted to see how the future quality/reviews are more. Based on some with similar issues, I'm not sure ill be getting another, but I'll see I guess. Thanks again!

Thanks very much for your input! I appreciate it. The body twist and warp (these are better way to describe it, thanks, as the phone isn't so much curved/bent as it, or the single piece back/body specifically, is warped) is quite noticeable with the one I have too (looking at the edge like you said). However, I don't think I've dropped the phone (too hard at least and no visible scrathes, scrapes, etc.) I also keep a phone in a coat pocket, bag, or just take it out and set it down when I'm not out and about, so I don't think I would have caused the warp myself. Thanks again!
