[DEV Request] Bridge the gap between Bell/AT&T Atrix's - Atrix 4G Android Development

It's most likely impossible, but for a Bell user to be able to flash an ATT SBF and actually have it work would be amazing. As I'm 99% sure if we ever see gingerbread come from Bell this month (or summer for that matter) it most likely will not have an unlocked bootloader. I'm willing to do whatever necessary in order to help.
I'm no expert, but so far what I know of the difference involves the fact that we were able to install ATT themes/psuedoRoms by booting into recovery and using "Wipe DATA/Factory Reset". (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1070076). Why this is so I'm not sure.
Thanks for any consideration of the topic.

Ok. I'm no dev and I don't have bell. However, I was thinking... Could you use recovery to flash a flashable .zip file of the 1.83 update and then unlock that way? Not sure if that would work at all but it just crossed my mind.

OP - Requests do not belong in the development section. For future reference. It does suck that Bell is lagging so far behind AT&T though...

If your referring to that fact that they were able to get the Chinese version to load onto an ATT phone and then unlock the bootloader and not the Bell then yes unfortunate...But Bell isn't lagging behind ATT...Correct me if im wrong but i don't remember hearing any official announcements about when ATT was going to be getting the official gingerbread update.
On topic, i too wonder if there is a way to merge the two as it seems very fragmented right now.
From what i understand it's a matter of the Bell Atrix having a different "framework" than ATT.
Hopefully some Dev's care enough to maybe make a go at it? =)
my 2 cents
cheers

Guys the UK official gb release is coming out the same day as the ATT one. We can just flash the uk one, unlock, and then flash any atrix roms can we not?

And what garantee the uk one will be unlocked?

I agree, Motorola said they would only unlock bootloaders where "carriers permit".
However, what would be the result of flashing an ATT sbf, as I don't know if anyonr has tried it but I have heard that RSDLite doesn't allow a Bell phone to flash an ATT sbf. If the hardware in the two phones is identical then at least in theory they should be able to flash either sbf. Or am I wrong?

Maybe i can look into where i can locate the build.prop file and send it to you=)

If you are running a rooted stock rom, and you update via the ota, you'll lose root, and depending if they updated the bootloader with a fix to prevent rooting, rooting may be lost forever...

for me
1. I moved to rogers, so i wouldnt get OTA update anyways.
2. If i wanted the OTA update, the rom will leak somewhere here, rooted.
there is no real incentive for me not to root. Once HTC releases their Froyo rom, it will be available somewhere on xda, so if i wanted it i could get it.

The easiest way to put in a new bootloader is just to grab the .902 FXZ. It will make sure that you're on a new one.

I know but but it can be updated right? I have "awakened" the gsm in the phone and I am using an AT&T prepaid when I can't get a signal with Verizon. I read in the forum that to do this while on an ICS rom you need to update the bootloader to A.72 to get it to work. That is why I'm asking.

Me neither. All you really can do with the bionic is install the latest update. Not really sure if it changes the boot loader. I was under the impression that it updated the radios and glitches in the os. Never heard of it changing the boot loader.

Does the Bionic support GSM 3G after ICS Update?

After the ICS update leak, does the bionic support GSM networks?
I highly doubt it. Typically, if a device has the capacity for using a type of cell network, it comes with that capability enabled.
Take a look at this thread, there's a hack to get it to work, but part of it must be done before installing the ics leak.

I'm debating about unlocking my phone and instal a Rom right now or wait and see. I usually root all phones but I was one of those dumbasses that flashed my EVO 3D with the virgin mobile version. Lucky me I didn't have most of the side effects people were complaining about. I just had the VM banners and some times text messages errors, but CM 10.1 make it go away.
Anyone have any cons about unlocking my phone and flash a rom right now or wait until we get S-Off if (ever happens).

you just need to unlock and install either twrp or cwm recovery.
From what I've read this really isn't a big deal. Nexus devices are not S-Off either. All this prevents you from flashing are the radio and bootloader which are not usually modified.

True, although for asop, aokp. and other open source roms a different bootloader maybe required. For the evo 3d the ics bootloader that installed with the firmware from the ota would give bootloops if a asop or aokp rom was flashed.if as a user you would never flash anything other than custom roms for your current version of android then yes an unlocked bootloader is all you need. Another example was the htc flyer. That device shipped with gingerbread when htc released the ota for honeycomb every user was in a hurry to install it, many had flashers remorse and wished to go back to gingerbread. With s-on they were out of luck.
This phone has features we may never see in aosp. I'm holding off on that. Nothing wrong with sense5 though honestly, its way better than any previous versions so far

Incorrect. You need to flash a superuser app and its binaries as well.
this zip is supposed to turn off read/write protection Sprint_One_Root_Disable_System_RW_Protection (1).zip
I was thinking we are a rare bunch of folks that are control freaks that root our phones.
But it amazes me to see things like Titanium Backup, Root Explorer, ROM Manager apps very near the highest volume Android Apps in the Market !!!
These are obviously "Root" user apps.
Maybe it's because we wipe our phones so often we distort the statistics
I love how they say they don't allow s-off because of "warranty" reasons yet at the bottom of the page it says unlocking your device will render the warranty void. #likewhat

This is somewhat false. The reason it was causing boot loops was because of the boot.img not flashing properly. It was required when the hboot got updated that we used a process such as "HTC dumblock" to flash the boot.img. Currently for our Ones we are fine because the hboot will allow proper flashing of the boot.img yet in the past, some future updates have blocked this feature. I for one will always want s-off. It gives me full control

[Q] 4.2.2 on T-Mobile?

I've just picked up the t-mobile version of this phone tonight, and it's on 4.1 right now. Everything I've read said there was an update for 4.2.2 , but the phone system says it's up to date. I'd actually prefer 4.1 for now because of bluetooth issues i think, but I'm just wondering if the t-mobile version will have to wait to be updated, making it much longer than the international versions? I didn't plan on rooting for a few weeks, but if there's already a 4.3 rom out there, i may have to do that a little quicker.

wait, so I'm confused, with the t-mobile xperia z, the bootloader can't be unlocked? if that is the case, then how can root even be possible?
Also, do the roms for the international version work on the t-mobile version (Such as parinoid android and cyanogenmod)
If that is the case, then what does the locked bootloader stop?
So I guess my question is, do roms designed for the international xperia z work on the t-mobile version. Like, do we get official cyanogenmod support?
I'm curious, because this might be my next phone (Debating between this and the nexus 4)
