[Q] Need help please! - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a g1 that I rooted using universal androot, I decided to uninstall myfaves and was unaware that it somehow affected contacts. Afterward I performed a restore to my phone, thinking it was going to help but now I'm stuck in the google welcome screen and the welcome app crashes every time it gets to sync and I cannot get past the welcome screen. I know it was a stupid thing to do, if anyone can help me I would appreciate it.

Can you go into Recovery mode?

Yeah, I can get into recovery mode. I also used the hard reset (alt + w), the sign in still crashes once it starts synching.

Try to restore nandroid

lol if you have a custom rom in and you remove an important app, doing a hard reset wont restore a custom rom... you have to either restore a nandroid/BART backup file (which means you needed to make the backup before you messed up the custom rom) or you need to re-flash the rom completely... which there are many guides and methods here on xda you can follow to properly flash roms, basic method is boot recovery, wipe data, cache, sd ext, etc..... than repair sd ext!!! than flash new rom.
Be sure you have the proper requirements needed for Rom! ex:
Radio=1.2.xxxxxx/2.22.xxxxx (many different ones)
hboot=0.95.xxx/1.3.xxxx (many different ones)
sdext=2,3 or 4 (some require none)

I will try it out, thank you.

another method to try (not garenteed) would be to unzip the rom on your pc, go to system/app folder and copy the fav5.apk file to root of sd card on your device. than go to market and download 'oi file manager' (or any type of file manager app) than flash the fav5.apk file that way.... make sure unknown sources is checked in settings/applications on device

Awesome thanks

Got it working!
I got it working. Just wanted to post the update, thank you guys for the help!!!

[Q] Basic ROM required for Nexus One

Sorry for such a Noob question.
I would like to download the basic stock rom for the N1.
My wifes N1 is not working correctly & she only uses basic features on the phone so i would like to flash it with the original stock rom.
Also at the moment we cannot turn the mobile internet off either.
PLEASE HELPPPPPPP
Bart
Here is the latest stock release in all it's options:
http://android.modaco.com/content/g...build-info-and-repacks-stock-rooted-deodexed/
The bottom most link sounds like the one you're looking for.
thank you so much for that
is flashing the rom on this the same as it would be for a Hero using HTC Sync on your computer?
if not please point me to a guide
my assumption from what i can see is that with this i dont need to root the phone or anything like that, is that right?
Hi sorry guys I still really need some help here.
I have managed to download the ROM as suggested but Im so confused from reading the different tutorials on how to actually flash the phone to revert it back to the stock rom.
I have seen the below tut would you advise using this?
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=614850
however i do not know what these terms mean
adb reboot bootloader
Confirm fastboot connection fastboot devices
fastboot erase userdata
fastboot erase cache
is fastboot where you hold the trackball down & then turn the device on giving you the sub menu?
sorry for the noob questions but i really need to get this phone sorted
Many thanks
Bart
There's a much simpler way to return to stock.
Download FRF91 from http://developer.htc.com
Rename to passimg.zip and copy to the root of the SD card.
Hold Vol- and power on the phone, it will find the file and ask if you wish to install. Job done.
Rusty
Thank you so much, you may save me from a divorce & a headache.
The internet truly makes the world a smaller place.
Thank you again so much sir
hi followed followed the steps & the phone doenst find the passimg.zip file when it reboots
i renamed the original zipped file to passimg.zip & put it on the sc card
also tried to extract the original file that i downloaded into another folder, renamed that to passimg.zip & put on the root of sd card.
neither method seemed to work as when i rebooted the phone with Vol - key held it didnt recognise or find the file
i just get the fastboot menu
Please help
Check it's not called passimg.zip.zip
Quite common
thanks mate i checked that
i ensured that i could see the extension before i renamed the file
so the file is def renamed passimg.zip
please confirm that i needed to just rename the downloaded zip file & not extract the file & then zip it
what else can i check please
thanks Rusty

What ROM is on her phone currently? Is it rooted? Is the bootloader unlocked? These are all important questions =)
phone is running 2.2.1 at the mo
phone is not rooted or anything unlocked, she has only received the over the air updates to the phone but done nothing else.
I think that the issues she's been having have occurded since the last update.
when she first had the phone it worked a treat
thanks for your help guys
Well in that case she *is* on a basic stock ROM. What problems are happening on her phone?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
the keyboard often would just stop responding
the internet would work and then not work
overall the phone would be working a lot slower than when she originally got it which is why I want to revert it to the stock Rom
Just factory reset it
ok I tried to do a factory reset but that's just wipes all the data right and doesn't actually reset the software version
I have done this by using the option within the phone menu and then also done this by using the clear storage option from the fastboot menu and again it only clears the phone's data and not reset the Rom to original
Again, you already have a stock ROM! It's the newest version but it's definitely stock unless you made any egregious mistakes during the upgrade or made any modifications yourself. You've said it was never rooted, hence I must conclude that it's as stock as it's going to get.

As the bloke above me says, its already as original as it's going to get!
ok guys sorry about this, its probably down to my mis communication, I want to reset the phone to firmware version 2.1 which is what it came with as it was working fine then. I thought this is what was meant by returning to original stock Rom.
apologies for the mis com
how do I reset it to original firmware 2.1
Even if you did, it will bug you to update all the time.
You need a passimg file, the original one for the N1 (ERD79) can be found on shipped-roms.com
Rename it to passimg.zip, put it on the root of the SD card and power on the phone holding Vol- it will find the file and ask if you want to update.

please help! struck at Update.zip

Looks like you made a mistake in 1 of 2 places
1) Using RSD lite for installing vulnerable recovery (did it flash ok?)
2) Or you did not install OpenRecovery correctly.
#1 requires you to restart with RSD
#2 requires checking that you did the Following:
OpenRecovery zip file contains 2 things : an update.zip and an OpenRecovery folder. You need to extract (copy) these 2 elements to the root of you SD card.
So in your SDCard you should have an update.zip FILE and an OpenRecovery FOLDER.
Then, from the standard recovery menu, you choose apply update.zip. This will start the OTHER recovery you wish to use (to install ROM). The ROM zip files belong (unextracted) in the OpenRecovery/updates subfolder.
Does this make sense?
yes RSD showed me PASS then only i closed it. After which i switched off the phone and then went to the "apply update..." menu.
i also do had update.zip, openrecovery and openrecovery-cfg all three folders.
so do you think is there any other place to go wrong?
moreover the universal androot's APK doesnt look like an setup file in milestone, any idea about it ?
now, let me try the link you gave me.

Try the link, follow the guide and ask again.
Honestly, you don't really need to root using those methods.
The vulnerable recovery + OR is all you need. Most the ROMs you will install have root built-in.
I would make sure I download ANDROIDIANI recovery (it is generally considered the best for Milestone.
Thanks Caz666, the link you gave me worked like a magic. Now i am done with root and cyanogenmod 6.1.2.
Post root and MOD-cyanogen6.1.2
hey Caz666, thanks again. i did the root and then used the update.zip>>cyanogenmod6.1.2.
but now what should i do to get the market ? email ? and other stuffs in place.
my questions is>>> whats next now that i have installed 6.1.2.... i am seeing something like android applications ? (<< is there a guide on this)

I am not certain i understand your questions
1. Wiping : you need to wipe all data (factory reset) if you switch to a different ROM. You only need to wipe dalvik cache and /cache if you upgrade to a newer CM6.
2. ?

First of all thanks for all the help.got everything installed. My mile is working awesome.
When should I do wipe factory reset?
Next how can I get black colored status bar.top one.
Lastly if I have to install a new Tom should I
1. Redo sbf?flash ie firmware flash right?
2. Redo a open recovery. Is there a alternate to this?
3. Guess I can follow the rest of the instructions specific to that rom.

1)
You should do a full wipe only when switching to a REALLY different ROM. Upgrades and version updates do not require this. Also, if you are trying out another CM6 based ROM, you *may* be able to avoid this.
If you are not sure, you should wipe. With options like apps2ext or Titanium backup, wiping is not such a big deal.
2) You do not need to do #1 or #2 for a new ROM. Only flash SBFs if you want to try a stock ROM (like when Motorola releases Froyo) or you have serious issues with the phone. OpenRecovery only needs to be reinstalled when there is a new version
3) To install a new ROM, wipe from inside OR. The 3 options are there. Always wipe Dalkvik Cache and /cache partition when applying themes or updating ROMs. Wipe data for NEW Roms

[Q] Help with rebooting hero. $$$ for fix...

Before you tell me to 'Google it' (which I have, and leads me to 1000 posts of people telling other people with the same problem to 'Google it'), please read.
I will PayPal anyone $20 with working instructions of how to resolve this
Phone: HTC Hero w/ chin
Carrier: Alltel
Story:
Switched from WM6 Palm Treo Pro to HTC Hero. Came with 2.1 and needed apps2sd. Want CM7 stable.
-Rooted using AndRoot.
-Installed SuperUser and Root Checker. Root Checker said I was good to go. SuperUser would not show any apps in the list this whole time.
-Installed Titanium Backup which said I needed BusyBox, but it would fail to install. Tried to install busybox and it said I was not rooted. Alright...
-Installed ClockworkMod and flashed recovery. Tried to reboot into clockwork recovery, but when I clicked it, it did nothing. When I clicked rom from sd card, and clicked the CM7, it said 'going to reboot now' but again, nothing happened.
I booted into recovery manually, but it was still in Android system recovery. Apparently there was some sort of rooting problem, so I tried z4root. Permanent root was stuck on 'rebooting', and temporary root said successful, but something was still wrong as BusyBox installer would say I was not rooted, and SuperUser app didn't show any programs to allow permissions.
I turned the phone off, and back on. It goes to the white 'HTC' screen, reboots, and then comes to a black page with a picture of a Hero and a red triangle and exclamation mark. I hold home and hit power, and it takes me into the Android system recovery. I wiped data and cleared cache, rebooted, and it does the same thing.
- - -
Now i've done many hours of research, and found nothing to help me. I guess i'm a bit confused on what the SDK does and how to use it, because it won't connect to my phone since I can't even boot my phone into the OS. I tried to download the RUU and rename it update.zip, but it says signature verification failed or not found in android recovery. I've done the clear data method by holding home, back, and power, but still nothing.
I need a clearcut answer for getting back to a stock Alltel 2.1 OS on my phone. I am more advanced than a basic user, and have flashed many roms on Windows Mobile, but remember I might not exactly understand everything.
I'm a silent browser on these forums but now I come to you guys for help. I hope to grow into a dev and hopefully help someone in the future in my position.
I read somewhere to wipe EXT2, but still confused on that process as it seems I don't know how to get into adb command line on my computer.
Try reflashing the cwm recovery. Sounds like you have no recovery image.
-----
Sent from my CDMA Hero. I got some hot Gingerbread-on-Hero action here!
Dumb question...did you flash a ROM? Maybe I missed it in your post, but I see you installed Clockwork, SuperUser and all that, but don't see that you flashed a ROM. *EDIT* I see you did...
So...worst case scenario, if you can't even boot your phone, just start over from scratch...
Download the original AllTel ROM from here.
If you don't have HTC Sync set up and can't restore from your computer, use this method to flash it...your phone should now boot...
Then try to reroot, using this (preferred) or this.
Download ROM Manager from the Market and install ClockworkMod Recovery
Boot to recovery (hold home and power at the same time).
Once in recovery, wipe cache, system, data and boot (make sure you don't wipe your sd card! Do it twice for good measure)
Select install .zip from SD card, select zip and you should be good to go with a rooted phone and a new ROM.
I think that should cover it...
Ok, on your first link to flash my phone, the step says:
"With phone powered on, do "adb reboot bootloader" to enter fastboot."
How do I get the command prompt on my computer to communicate with the phone? That was my biggest problem when reading other people's posts. I guess i'm a bit lost. I installed the r10 android sdk which I believe is the first step? And when my phone is connected to the computer to enter these commands, is it okay if it is sitting at that screen with the red triangle?
Thanks for your help btw your steps sound simple, and simple is nice. One step closer!
Do you have HTC Sync set up? If you do, you should be able to restore from that to get you back to official AllTel...That's going to be the easiest way to get you back to stock I think.
And...I am on a Mac So, helping someone on a PC is not my forte with ADB
I'd try setting up HTC Sync and get yourself back to stock that way.
EDIT - To get it to communicate, you need to set up ADB and all that. Then just use command prompts...Try this thread for help/instructions.
I actually got it to load that rom with vol down + power but eventually got to 'CID incorrect! Update fail!', so i'll try connecting to sync.

What ROM? The AllTel one?
I have to take off until about 8:30 or so...get yourself set up with HTC Sync and get the USB drivers and all that set up, first thing you need to do is get your computer to talk to your phone...download the official AllTel RUU and restore to stock. That's task 1
Then we'll get ya rooted
I think I found a rom that worked. Currently rebooting. I can follow the rest and if I need anymore help, I'll give you a hollar. It's tough sometimes to follow things...and as much as we always tell people to search, ya know, the search kinda sucks I searched for all the threads I linked for you, but I knew what I was looking for. If you don't know what to look for, searching is kinda tough. Glad you got it!
Now...if you want a real ROM, I'll just toss this one out there In all actuality, CM7 and aospCMod are quite similar, I am just partial to aosp's builds.
Let me know if you need any more help.

Bunch of Captivate problems please help

Lately i have been having many problems with my captivate from just normal function use and problems with trying to back it up and use roms. ive looked through countless threads followed directions, videos, but those came with no such luck.
First ill mention the recent problems i seem to have which most likely are due to me attempting to back it up, use rom manager, installing roms etc. First is the response of the unlock button which just started happening today. ill have to push the unlock button multiple times before i even get the unlock screen. when i finally do get it its usually covered in the menu you get when you hold down the lock button. while in a voicemail today i tried unlocking to click the number pad and instead my phone just randomly turned off.
Another recent problem is horrriiibbbllleee battery life. ill take my phone off the charger at 100% get ready for work eat breakfast and in that time maybe text my gf once or twice and ill be down like 10% it is impossible for me to get my phone to last a whole day without charging it in my car during my lunch break and i still go home in the red zone of battery.
Now to the problems ive been having that most likely caused this.
a few weeks ago i wanted to try to put on cog5 and cm7 to try them out. before i did anything i wanted to back up my phone so first i plugged it in and simply copied every folder from the phone and sd card to my computer just in case. then i looked up ways to do backups and rom installs and many things led me to using rom manager. (i was already rooted and have the froyo leak from last year) first i tried the backup option in rom manager, after running it it did absolutely nothing, there were no options when i would go back to it and to the restore option. i figured aww whatever ill try this anyways. i downloaded the zip files for the roms placed them in the sd folder as update.zip or w.e. would open up into the download mode or whatever only to see no option to download the file.
i also tried installing cog 4.5 which was an option through rom manager and that did nothing as well. i eventually somehow messed my phone up where when i turned it on if i would press the app drawer it would pop up the menu, only like 5 apps would display, it would bounce up and down and i couldnt back out of it or click anything. when i could get it to the main screen i also couldnt do anything. i was able to go into task killer through the dropdown menu and navigate to stuff through there. again tried to do the restore in manager but nothing. so i just wiped every file on the phone and sd card and replaced it with the files i had saved earlier and have just been using it as that.
recently i found an article saying i need to flash back to the original then flash to gingerbread before i can do anything else. well before i wanted to mess with this i wanted to try to backup. read articles on nandroid backups and watched a how to vid. the article said to boot into clockwork recovery then click back up and yada yada. if the option was not there then to click reinstall packages. however everytime i click reinstall packages my phone fails and will not do it.
all in all i just need help backing up my phone as i have some apps and games and stuff i dont feel like starting over on (tho if i have to i guess i will ha)
after the backup i would then like to install cm7 or cog5 and if anyone feels those arent stable enough for normal use then whatever anyone suggests. im really horrible at messing around with these phones, probably shouldnt have been even trying but i get bored sometimes. main problem is just none of the options any video or guide states ever work when i actually do it with my phone or those options arent even available.
thanks in advance to everyone and try to make your responses as stupid as possible
if you would read around the captivate forums, rom manager isnt of much use to us here. just boot into recovery and use CWM, then select BACKUP AND RESTORE, to make your backup.....

Ok. I don't even know if you can get there from where you are now, but the first step I'd recommend if you need to keep your app data is to get Titanium Backup (it's in the market). If you can get that running, do a backup (there's directions on how to do it in the stickies if you need it), and move that to a safe place (like your pc).
If you can connect via USB, you can always pull the clockworkrecovery.zip out of the AIO Captivate Toolbox, move it to your internal SD card, rename it update.zip, and then try to do the reinstall packages with that.
If you can't get there, and you don't have a good nandroid backup, you may (unfortunately) be out of luck with getting your saved data back. If you can't make a good backup, and you're still in froyo/eclair land (I'm guessing you are, since I believe that cog 4.5 is not gingerbread), you would probably be best off to use the Odin One-Click to Stock to put your phone at a nice clean place to start over.
After that, do a little reading and research, and find a ROM that you think looks like it will suit you well - it's going to be a matter of personal choice, so just read up. Once you find one that looks good, just read its directions on how you can install it.
Assuming all goes well, you'll be back up and running in no time. If you're luck, and Titanium Backup worked, you'll even be able to get your apps back.
If you have more questions, just post.
alright didnt know that
although i did say that i cant do that. when i go into recovery there is no option for backup and i cant get into clockwork recovery. the thread i read said if i cant then click reinstall packages and i should be able to however reinstall packages fails. the only options i get or to boot up, reinstall, clear cache, clear "something" and then another option though i dont quite remember both nothing is displayed that your telling me to click. thanks for the prompt response

What does your recovery screen look like? Does it have a little gear icon as the background, or is it the Android guy with an exclamation point in a triangle?

i actually already have titanium. perhaps should have mentioned that lol. i just dont know too much about how it quite works. a while back i backed up apps and such and i can still do so now. so that program then saves everything on the sd card? once flashing to stock would i reinstall titanium and then it would be able to pull from these files on the sd card. also what would one have to back up in order to save games in emulators, do those saved games store on the emulator, in game file on the sd card or elsewhere? thanks for the post and the link for stock. assumed thats what id be doing just wanted to check on backing things up

That's good to hear. When you run a "backup all user apps" operation, it creates a folder called "Titaniumbackup" on your internal SD card. If you did a backup with TiBu before all of this happened (with your apps they way they were), and you've only added a little bit since then, just do a new "backup all user apps" batch operation, then move it to a safe place.
As far as everything else, you may have to do a little digging and move those files manually (if you have emulator saves and roms, you'll probably have to find where those are saved by yourself).
The recovery screen you're seeing is the stock Android recovery screen, meaning you don't have ClockworkMod Recovery (CWM) installed. Look in the dev section for the AIO Captivate Toolbox, download it, and then follow my directions above to get CWM installed. You can make a Nandroid backup from there.
At that point, you can clean your phone up (with the one-click to stock), and start over again with flashing.

well its been like half a year since ive backed anything up. would i still be able to do the backup all user apps when things are going wrong with it. that only backs up those apps not any of the rom or anythin so those wouldnt corrupt the fresh phone right?
as to the second part alright sounds good ill try that out and let you know how i fail some more thanks a lot
i see no backup all app data option titanium backup. lol told you im an idiot

In my experience, when Tibu does a backup, it will add any new applications/data to your existing backup, and overwrite existing backed up data to your backup. To be safe, just keep the backup you made a year and a half ago somewhere safe, and then run the batch operation on a separate copy on your phone. That way, at least one of the backups will be able to get you to where you want to be.
It only backs up applications and their associated data (e.g. Angry Birds + its scores) as long as you do the "backup all user apps" option. If you choose the "Backup all user apps + system data", you can get into some unsafe territory when it comes time to restore them.
Ultimately, if your applications right now are at a place where you are happy with them, just run the "backup all user apps" option, then move the titaniumbackup folder to a safe place.

No problem. Just go into Tibu, click the "backup/restore" button at the top, then click the menu key and select the "batch" option. The next screen that comes up should have an option that said "backup all user apps" - just click the Run button next to it and let it do its thing.
Ok you're on Froyo, right? That means you have the stock 3e recovery and need to use the search button and look for modded 3e recovery in the Captivate android development section, follow those steps. Then once you have that, go to Rom manager and flash CWM at the very top. Reboot to recovery backup!

Thanks for catching that - I haven't been on stock Froyo, so I keep forgetting about that.

You are correct in assuming it doesn't back those up.
Just so you know, doing all this won't erase the files on your internal sd card unless you do a master clear somewhere along the way. That being said, backing up all your important information before doing any major phone changes is always a good idea.
umm little help in flashing odin. ive downloaded it, its open, i put my phone in download mode its connected by usb, clicked start and it seems to be stuck here:
<ID:0/009> Added!!
<OSM> Enter CS for MD5..
<OSM> Check MD5.. Do not unplug the cable..
<OSM> Please wait..
<OSM> Checking MD5 finished Sucessfully..
<OSM> Leave CS..
<ID:0/009> Odin v.3 engine (ID:9)..
<ID:0/009> File analysis..
<ID:0/009> SetupConnection..
is it done? i recall a long time ago when i flashed froyo i believe it said finish. do i still wait, is it not working, do i just do reboot system?
i was trying to flash this then was goin to do the whole thign with clockwork after. tho i also saw like cog has clockwork in the rom so i was going to root then put this on afterwards, reinstall titanium then reinstall by backup.
haha now i messed up. k got it stock. then got gingerbread. then started the root. did the first part but i didnt know i needed to put the 3 button fix on. so now my phone is stuck in a boot lupe with some dumb fugu fish or w.e. and i cant access download mode. computer wont recognize my phone to do anything like add in the fix or flash back. is there anything i can do without having to make a jig or whatever?
if you flashed the gingerbread bootloaders then you need to hold volume down and power to get into download mode.

[Q] N00b has done his best to kill Three HTC one (the n00b is me)

This is a great example of how to make a mess of things with a combination of a little knowledge and not paying attention. Here's the background:
UK 1.28 One Stock + Root. No other mods. I needed to install Busybox so I could install Screen Standby # Root. Apparently, the marketplace apps are unable to install due to the System folder protection. I found a .zip to install using TWRP (Sprint_One_Root_Disable_System_Write_Protection_1.29.651.10.zip) and you can already see where I've gone wrong. I looked for a generic/EU version of this zip but this was the only one I could find so off I went. Naturally this didn't work and my phone now won't boot. At least I can get to TWRP still so I presume all is not lost. Looking at my /system directory, there's nothing in it apart from the /bin folder (also empty). From further reading I guess I need to find a stock kernel and use ADB push to push boot.img and then fastboot to install. So my questions are:
1) Is this the correct way to fix this problem? I'd rather rescue this system as I've got everything the way I like it. No, I hadn't done a backup. Yes, I'll sort that as soon as I've fixed it.
2) Can somebody point me in the direction of the stock kernel for my device?
3) How was I supposed to install BusyBox? (I still need to get Screen Standby # Root installed!)
Many thanks for your help in advance.

That's brilliant. Given I can only get to my bootloader or TWRP and don't have a USB OTG cable, will that work with TWRP's 'sideload' functionality? If not, how would I install it using fastboot?
<edit> Just tried it using TWRP sideload and I get a 'No MD5 file found' and 'Zip signature verification failed. Any suggestions?
<edit2> Changed to CWM and that seemed to install correctly but the phone still refuses to boot. There's a few errors in CWM that seem to indicate it can't mount System - could this be the problem? I never S-OFF'd before I got in to this mess.
Thanks!
Anyone else? I've got a USB OTG cable on its way and what I hope is the correct Nandroid backup to restore, but I've not given up hope on bringing the current build back to life.
Right, well, things are certainly brighter than yesterday. USB OTG cable arrived, restored Nandroid backup for UK Three 1.28. Phone comes back to life. Brilliant. Set about getting back to where I was and sorting out the Busybox problem. I installed:
HTC Preloaded apps via CWM
Team Seven Sense Kernel v4 stable
Installed Busybox via a market app and things are looking excellent. Apart from the camera app not working. Oh hell. 'Unable to start camera' after about 10-20 seconds of a black screen with camera controls.
Figured this might be a cache or permissions issue so I went back to recovery and cleared cache, dalvik cache and repaired permissions. Clear the app data as well from Settings. No dice. The only thing I didn't delete is the user data as I was hoping to not lose the pictures I've got on there. Everything else is brilliant so I hope somebody can help me fix this!
Thanks again.
