Why isnt Playstation Vita a phone? - Off-topic

i am so freaking mad that the ps vita isnt a phone . Why not? i just dont understand. It would save me carrying two devices.

Vita is a full fledged gaming and media device... Phones are phones... You can't mix the two and have a great product ..... One its too much tech to be in a smaller frame... And the battery life would suck donkey toes, and it would cost bout a good 800
Bussin Caps n 3D

I don't really think it matters much. If you give it about another year or two smartphones will be as powerful if not more powerful than handheld gaming devices. I can really see the handheld gaming market getting phased out. Its already in the process

I don't see that happening for a while yet, at least a decade.
Folk wisdom in the 80s used to be that due to the versatility and power of personal computers, dedicated gaming consoles were dead after the '84 crash.
Look how well that turned out.
I see the dedicated handheld market slowly plodding along towards digital distribution, similar to computer and console gaming but the mechanics and process won't be the same.
Dedicated portable gaming market will die when battery technology is sufficient enough that spending any serious amount of time gaming on our cellphones, especially resource and network intensive games, won't require us to have a charger or spare battery nearby.

Vita is a full fledged gaming device, and if they have fit in so much already into a small frame, and have throwed in 3g, why not a antenna? That would just make it a ultimate device (which my rom tries to achieve ), just throw in fb and twitter and your all good. Then vita will own ALL the handheld market

I do agree that smart phones are quickly gaining ground on dedicated handheld gaming machines, but even as smart phone technology improves, so does technology behind dedicated gaming devices. The difference is that in order for smart phones to remain in competition with gaming devices, they need multiple hardware and software upgrades before the next handheld gaming generation releases. I'm not so sure the handheld gaming market will be phased out entirely.

I think once an elegant way to figure out how to add good analog controls to a phone is found the stand alone market will be further eroded. Xperia PLAY is a step in the right direction but is somewhat half-baked.

Actually it is, an Android phone. There is already a version of the PSP known as the Xperia Play.

If the phone has 3G, an ATT sim card, and a microphone, then why do you all think some industrious developer won't just plug in the sim from one of his actual phone accounts and dev an app that allows you to make phone calls?
Just sayin.
As to holding a phone up to your face, haven't you heard of a bluetooth headset?

Im a nintendo fanboy myself, the developmental possibilities for the 3ds are amazing!
I bet you could even port android to one of its screens
Well considering it's an ARM processor, would be interesting if someone tried porting Android to the NGP/PSP2.
In general, it looks great, I highly doubt many games will use the new features well though. I'm looking forward to having a touchscreen keyboard with online games, hopefully they do a good job with it.
I don't think that's gonna be possible. Sony is mightily afraid of the homebrew scene...
And I hope it doesn't go touchscreen either. Just stick to the traditional button controls, please

Just because they don't want it doesn't mean it's impossible Exploits will be found eventually.
And a bit late for that, have you seen the NGP yet? It's already got both a touchscreen and a touchpad on the back, the new main interface is based on it(hideous, but it's based on it )

After seeing Sony abandon the PSP (in terms of games, at least) after it was jailbroken, you'll have to excuse me if I'm reluctant to adopt the PSP2... but well...
And I stand corrected, there is a touchscreen on it, but my earlier comment was more pointed towards redundancy in gaming devices. There are already three significant portable gaming devices with touchscreen (iOS, NDS and Android), and I'm not sure the market is open enough for another (as opposed to a niched 3D-heavy porta-console).
I just hope that the platform has more games, rather than the sucky barrage of J-games...
In terms of jailbreaking... well... it took 4 full years for it to happen. You gonna wait?
Will totally depends on price and popularity!
it will be outdated enuff to not be worth to get a separate console for gaming by the time it comes out ... basically , its already dead before birth , sony should know better what huge changes go down in one year in the exponentially growing phone market

I don't understand the iPhone hate in the world. The psychologist in me says there must be some jealousy. The iPhone does some things very, VERY well. It's beautifully designed hardware. It's very reliable and generally just works.
That said, there's a few reasons I like Android better:
- Better, less intrusive notification system
- More freedom in what to use - no apps blocked out because of stupid rules (think Google Voice)
- Swype keyboard availability
- Google Maps GPS
But the iPhone has:
- Better Applications, especially games
- Better hardware design (aesthetically) than any Android phone
- Less platform fragmentation and more regular updates
If Apple licensed Swype, and created something other than their pop-up notifications, I would seriously consider switching. No questions. Both are great products and should be recognized as such. Windows Phone 7 is also very nice for those who only need to do what it can do.
I'm surprised you don't hear it said more often but i've always seen the iphone as more of a ladies device, whereas Android is more for the gents.
Is that just me?
Men are generally more practical and we enjoy our tools, (ahem), ladies like to accessorise.

the first two your points for the iphone are subjective. for your third one, Forced updates are not necessarily a good thing.
Here are my subjective counter arguments.
Hardwarewise the iphone is lacking, (Sd card? USB port?) and is easily broken (not to mention antenna fail)
Software wise the iphone is lacking (neutered bluetooth, boring interface) The apps and games are not all that different to android, both markets are being constantly updated.
Apple have to release updates very often , Because its the only one phone apple got , So, they can easily do it but other OEM Cant do for all models

Sure, I'm being a big subjective, but so are you with "boring interface." The iPhone 4 is glass and metal. Premium materials all around in a way nothing compares to. Neutered Bluetooth? I quit caring about Bluetooth the day I got a smartphone. Bluetooth (when not crippled) is great on dumbphones, but seems to me to have little purpose on a smartphone. As for the "antenna fail" - it's mostly myth. People I know with iPhone 4's are getting great reception. You basically just have to avoid touching it on the antenna breaks - which are easy to see and clear to avoid, and they're not in places where MOST people would touch it in the normal use of the phone. The only way you'd really naturally touch them is if you're gripping the phone with your whole hand.
I'm not saying it's perfect, I love the flexibility of Android. I'm just saying - there's some things that Samsung, Motorola, HTC, etc could learn from Apple on.

8 gb internal memory, has a link cable. AT&T had the antenna issue, issue fixed with Verizon version. AT&T network also part to blame on that too. The SD card and USB port are more like features, not actually needed.

Bluetooth works just fine for communication, and the interface is to each their own. I like it a lot. The apps and games I've seen and used on Ios are a lot more polished than those on Android. For a good reason though, Apple has control over the apps. Android has an open market. Plus, in my opinion the games on ios are way better. I only thing I like in games that android has that doesn't need root, are emulators.
I like both platforms, I wish frash would be more developed for ios. I might be getting on Verizon and getting one, if not probably gonna get the Thunderbolt if the LTE is only $30 and not $50.

That comment makes no sense whatsoever. An iphone is not simple because it only has one button. It's built that way because that's what the software needs.
even if it's the other way around (software optimized for hardware) the iphone is not a "toy phone". It's as fast and powerful as most android devices.
Apple's guidelines are a different story and it hampers the phone, but as a device, it can go head to head with any current android phone.

in short , i believe u meant to say : the revolutionary software is built around one magical button
Guys, seriously, what's the point in arguing this stuff. It just screams of jealousy. The iPhone 4 is great hardware. It's very similar inside to a Samsung Galaxy S. The screen is smaller, but higher resolution - different for different needs. The design is very elegant and classy.
The software? Eh, it's fast and looks good at first. I hate the popup in-your-face notifications though, and it's rather repetitive.
The App Store? This is where I really start to hate the iPhone - the "you can't do that because we say so" attitude. This would be fine if sideloading apps was allowed, but it's not. And THAT is my big issue with the iPhone.
But arguing that the hardware isn't very high end is silly. And the one button isn't even to make it simpler, it's not - having physical buttons is easier. It's to make it more minimalist and look nicer. The same reason by the time Apple finally started including multi-button mice with Macs, they did so once the technology was in place to make it look and feel like a one-button mouse. Sure, the one-button mouse was slow and hard to use. But it looked good. The new Apple mice are amazing though - one physical button, but a touch surface that recognizes where you're pushing on the mouse. Likewise with the new Apple trackpads - one GIANT touch surface with no discernable button, but it works great! The old true one-button Apple mice though were a crime against humanity - and there's a reason almost nobody professional actually used the mouse that came with their Mac in those days.

It's a button that does the same as the home button on any android device. So android can search or go back using physical buttons, there's no inherent difference that those options are built into iphone UI.

I completely agree; we like to spend more time tinkering with the phone, customizing it to our liking.
I do see a lot more women with iPhones, and the women that i do see with android phones (galaxy s or whatever), use all stock applications and launchers and maybe have Angry Birds on there or something.
Screens too small. I'll have me a nice big android phone any day.
I am currently using a 7 inch gsm/3g tablet as my phone and I love it. fits into my pockets too. zte v9.
Nice hardware. Too small. Like the macbook air.

The 3ds is gonna get pwned when the ngp comes out!!!

Sony NGP:
2GHz Quad-Core Processor
Graphics as good as PS3
Android-Based

OLED Touchscreen
Two Analog Sticks
Touch Sensitive Panels on the back
Man's Device
Killzone 3
Uncharted
Nintendo 3DS:

Crap Graphics
Meant for little kiddies

Banned because yes specs wise it wins, but theres other things involved. Look at the PS3, it easily outspecs the Wii and 360, but only recently has it become super popular compared to the other two. If Sony doesn't market the NGP it will fail.

Sony PS Vita is horrible.

Now I say that but I really can't put my finger on why I think it sucks. I used mine for three days then returned it. I was annoyed with lack of battery life, I thought the games were similar to psp games. Holding it was odd and the screen was sub par to samsung's amoled. This doesn't surprise me. Their portable playstation line has never been as great as I hoped it would be. The same goes for their smartphones for that matter. Always look awesome before release, but then not so great afterwards.

Matter of taste. Love my psp i use it way more then my ds. And what model vita 3g wifi? Settings? Games? You gave no real info on why it sucks other then you thought it sucks. Its neginning library is going to suck thats how its always been with ps. Ps1 had no good launch games, ps2 didnt really have any, psp didn't have any and ps3 didn't have any so you based your hole experience off of three days when so far it looks like it only has one good game (uncharted)?
Not trying to sound like a jerk but really? Haven't got it yet and it will be sometime before i get one but yeah not ready to jump on board it sucks for no reason train just yet.

I love PSP the vital sucks though
I forgot about motorstorm.. that was pretty awesome
Looking forward to the vita release
Honestly don't think many gaming companies will jump on the Vita.
Smart phones and consoles is where the money is at.

I bought the PSP 2000 near release and absolutely loved it. I installed a custom firmware so I could play emulators (which was great), watch YouTube, etc. It was probably some of the best $$$ I had ever spent, because I used it for years.
I do not play on purchasing the PSP Vita, though. I don't think it'll be a failure or anything, I just don't see the need of it. I do all my on-the-go gaming on my phone. I know there is no "hardcore" games like Uncharted or anything, but more casual on-the-go fun games is what I favor.
Just my personal opinion, though.
I haven't come to a conclusion yet. It doesn't feel like the PSP when I'm holding it. I think that's throwing me off more than anything.
Currently playing Uncharted.
I am loving mine, I had a PSP-1000. I got mine fully updated to 2.00, way back when. I knew I was going to get the Vita when I saw the first trailer for it. I bought it thinking it was all ready a month or two old in the states, but oh well. I am looking forward to the Gravity Rush game looks awesome! I don't have uncharted but I am not a big Playstation guy, so I am new to the series. Worth getting? It just likes like a Prince of Persia like game.
I bought my PS3 the month it was released.I think it cost me some 600€.Back then I was like 12 or 13 years old,so it was money collected through the course of a whole year.I was really disappointed at first.Fast forwarding to February 28th of 2012,these 600€ are my best spent money, along with the 500€ I parted with for my Galaxy S 2,which too disappointed me at first, only to amaze me thrice as much afterwards. As Azrienoch says, that's the moral of the news!Don't judge any device from your first impressions with it.It's likely to be a wrong impression, because it's something different than what you're used to.Just a friendly word of advice.
Still,I'm waiting to see whether it'll fare well with remote play from the PS3.If I can play my PS3 games on it through wifi/etc,I'm sold.(checks wallet...)Well,maybe not yet.
It is a great device. The launch lineup is also very good, I think the best launch lineup ever. My only complain is the mediocre browser and lack of folders in the menus.

Do you exploit glitches in video games?

Funny i'm asking this in XDA, but I had this argument with a couple of friends and well, they think that exploiting minor glitches in video games is wrong, though I think its nice to have a small boost sometimes!
What do you think\do?

I now pronounce you man and wife
It depends. If you're using glitches to do stuff you can't normally do when offline then that's fun. If you're doing it online then you're a loser who needs a life. The only people who think it's okay to cheat online are other losers who also need to get a life.

Naughty boys aren't allowed online
This is the main reason I get games for online play on the PS3 rather than the Xbox.

You live in the same world as me, i have a 2 ghz dual core and 2 gig of ram. Always have to pick lowest quality but windows 8 was a huge performance boost to it.

Not on my PS3 (not that I really play online often but I still feel like it cheapens the "achievements" ).
However I will on the emulators I play on my phone since the control scheme already puts me at a disadvantage and I'm not playing games on my phone for anything other a quick break from everything while I'm waiting on line or something like that.

You're missing out dude. The online community and servers are so much better on 360. I used to have both but I quickly grew tired of PS3's online community, so I sold mine.

Mine is slightly better, 2.56 GHz core2duo, 4 GBs of RAM and and an ATI Radeon 4850 VGA. I can play all recent games but not at the best quality.

Our shared desktop is 1gb of RAM and 1.8ghz dual core processor, with Windoze XP. It does however have a good graphics card and so plays Minecraft very well on far render distance

Nah, really I'm not missing out. I have played both platforms online and PS3 is my preferred choice. I'm the opposite of you - I've had a PS3 since release day, but am on my 3rd Xbox which I only got cos it was so cheap. I get them and then regret it and sell them normally. I'll keep it this time though, just for the exclusives.
Personally, I prefer an online experience where you don't have spoilt little brats calling you ever racist or homophobic slur they can think of. And I'd rather not listen to someone else's favourite dubstep track while trying to play a game. There's certainly a lot more Xbox users (kids always buy the cheaper console), but that's not really relevant when the first thing you do is mute every single one of them.
Depends on if I'm playing for money

I have both systems too and I prefer the dual shock controller. I also like how Sony doesn't charge me every month, I have paid for XBL for months I didn't use it.
I only exploit glitches in games once I finish them
Online gaming I don't, ever. Ruins the fun of online gaming when someone uses a cheat to gain an unfair advantage

Word and word. I would like if a few more people had mics on PS3 to call in movement in BF3, but the spot function works well enough that my K/D stays positive and my team usually wins. I'll deal with that sacrifice if it means no little turds flapping their gums and not having to pay another $30 a month on top of internet costs. PS3 controller fits my hands better as well, but that's just nitpicking.
