Gingerbreak to root d3? - Motorola Droid 3

I don't know if we can use the gingerbreak app to root D3?

No current root methods work on the Droid 3.

Huh? They were asking a question. I answered it.

Except I didn't have a double negative. What he posted makes no sense, and I posted exactly what I meant to say.

Simple: dotson assumed there was a comma where there wasn't.
Original: "No current root methods work on the Droid 3."
What dotson (mis-)read: "No, current root methods work on the Droid 3."
Thus he assumed he meant to say "No, current root methods don't work on the Droid 3."

From y limited understanding Gingerbreak works with 2.3.3, however the D3 comes stock with 2.3.4, which has all known exploits closed. So we just have to wait until more are found, with code as complex as an OS there's always some to be had.

Let's hope.

It should be even easier once the first OTA comes out, seeing how the moto devs access the OS is very likely to reveal an exploit, or at least point us in the right direction.

Exactly, I just rooted, upgraded, and rooted again not more than 20 minutes ago.

Yes, mostly everyone that have followed the directions and know what they are doing have had success. I was one that upgraded first and didnt have any issues and havent had any since.
The update keeps failing for me after root. Any ideas?

(Q) How to install/flash kernel?

So with the kernel released, anyone want to educate us how to flash a kernel? Id like to dig into this kernel, and if I can do anything with it, id like to know how to flash it to test...
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA Premium App
it should be the same as on any other phone. boot into ClockWork Recovery and select "install .zip from sd card"(or you could specify in ROM Manager that you want to do that also.
No, its not the same as any other phone...you can't install a custom kernel on the Bionic because it can only run a signed boot image...ala the locked bootloader.
The release of the kernel source, while welcome, is not anything that end users can do anything with at all and is of limited use to developers as well, due to the fact that Moto doesn't release everything and custom kernels are not possible.

Well, you're wrong.
It the phone was unlocked, that is where you'd flash the kernel - through recovery.
well, the procedure of installing a kernal is the same as a ROM(meaning you don't have to go through BootLoader)... so as far as installing, the above is how you'd do it... but wether or not(not) your phone accepts it is a different story considering the current status of the Bionic.
Hmm, wonder if any one is willing to try... If u have then knowledge to put that in a flashsble zip, il try... what's the worst that could happen.... Have soft brick and rds back to life....???

Jeez. The kernel source was barely released a day or two ago. Give the dev community a few days to sort out what they can do with it before getting all crazy about it. We already have ClockworkMod Recovery for the Bionic. Chances are, since they have the full source code, we'll have refined flashable kernels that are bootloader-compliant in the coming weeks.

I am hoping this is the case as well.
Not sure if the entire source was released or just what was contractually obligated to under the GPL.(which is likely the case since everything would give the dev's the key to the kingdom so to speak.)

Well...since we are being sticklers for the facts here...the easiest and most efficient way to load a custom kernel, if we could do so, would be fastboot.
They are typically released for most devices with unlocked bootloaders in update.zip format, but it's really device dependent and several forms are often available.

I backed up my old Blur-Camera.apk and Blur-Camera.odex to my SD card. Extracted the files from the provided zip to /system/app and fixed permissions to be rw-r--r--. Rebooted, and its' still not showing up. I reverted back to my old camera for now until someone else gets it working.

You're a fool. I've cheesecaked all the way to 5.7. The kernel blocks webtop at some point in the upgrade path. The only way to keep webtop (that has been found) is to go directly from 886 and cheesecake to 5.7, one big jump. If he didn't do that, then this is crucial information in obtaining webtop back for us who did the incremental updates.
Sorry there isn't a search button to help your ignorance and lack of knowledge.
Also, show me one spot in this thread where he listed his upgrade path.

My plans are to add a reboot toggle and the 1% battery mod. I already saw Dan's root method for Jb but I kept running into errors. When I got to adb shell near the last step no matter what I tried it would tell me no directory of that name so I might wait until a one click root shows up. Shouldn't be long now that we actually have a root method.

Sent from my XT1254
That would be WP dude. WP is why we can perm-root our phones thru the OS and is why it disappears after a reboot (Though you can just re-root using the same KingRoot app as before.) I'm sure you know WP means we can write/install the necessary SU binaries to the system. WP is part of the "firmware" you mentioned.

Just to put it out there - you can use a root app (after rooting your phone ofc) to set SELinux to Permissive so it doesn't keep forcing your phone to reboot. I'm testing it on my phone now. Again it will still disappear after reboot but still a temp work-around.

There's no question he wasn't anywhere near perm root like he initially stated (or unintentionally led people to believe-to me it doesn't matter at this point), but at least he is looking around. A lot of the devs on year old devices like ours and the note 4 have given up. I really hope he discovers something. Dmverity (which I think is still the culprit) is a tough nut to crack.
@jcase will eventually look at the issue, but apparently bootloader unlock is the most likely way around wp. To me that says that wp too hardened at this point and the bl is the better angle of attack. That is both good and very scary. My comments are based upon what jcase has stated recently.
So let me ask this, if I temp root, install an adblock, and reboot, what happens? Clearly ill lose root but will the hosts file get overwritten?

To me temp-root is useless. I mean seriously, who wants to keep re-rooting and re-installing root apps after every reboot? I don't, that's for sure. Without write protection disabled you are going to be very limited in what you can do with any root method you use.
Oh, and I use AdGuard for blocking ads on my Droid Turbo. You don't need root for it to work and it works very well.
