When would you backup a rom? - XPERIA X8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

For me,I backup my rom before update a rom and after update it.
When would you make a backup??

Before and after too. if all goes well i remove old backup but sometimes i keep, on Froyobread now but i still have a Floyo backup to go back to if i ever want.

Ya,I still keep a backup of MiniCM,and Hackdroid(I'm now using Floyo)

I often do a full wipe before and after flashing updates or new ROM's. So I do a backup when all my app's/settings are applied and I keep a copy of the SDcard with the backup to restore in case I face any problem...

oh I see, backup is really important.

Yes you can, I actually keep a sense rom in nandroid just for the purpose of updating my pri and prl. You can go in to your nandroid folder and rename your nandroids to mor memorable names so there easier to indentify, just dont use spaces in the folder name.
You dont even need to wipe to switch your rom from nandroid back up to nandroid back up, just restore to the one you want. at most youll have to wipe the dalvik.
cool! thanks for the help.

[Q] froyomod or miui

froyomod 2.7/2.8 or the latest miui .. im concerned with the comparisons related to battery life and performance .. ppl who have used it plz comment ..
i used froyomod up to 2.7, it was faster then miui. But miui includes Android 2.3 and has better battery life.
Also i use launcherpro with both firmwares, cause it really faster then any other
froyo mod is much faster and snappier than miui and has good battery life too plus it depends on personal preferences.. u can try them both for a day and see for urself..with nandroids whats the big deal ?
idk how to do nandroid backups n use them back n all ..
its about personal taste. miui looks more like iOS and froyomod feels more like an adnorid phone. also personally i think froyo mod is a little bit more snappy and responsive.

You mean you dont know, or you do know?
If you don't know, go to recovery, and you will find a menu called Nandroid. Choose Backup, Backup All, and let it do its thing, which takes 3-5 mins. The backup will be saved by the date of the day and the number of the backup. When you restore, wipe everything first (cache, dalvik, data), then RESTORE ALL.
what all does it backup ? .. even the apps ? .. or for apps u need ext2 only ..
and when wud u normally use nandroid backup .. ???

Nandroid backup is your lifesaver. Your spare tyre.
If u screw up your phone like when your phone goes into a boot loop, u can boot into Open Recovery, and restore a Nandroid backup of your phone to the state it was b4..b4 u did something that screw up your phone.
Another usage of Nandroid backup is when you are testing a few ROMs and still cannot decide which one to use. So u can restore a Nandroid backup of one ROM, test it and then if u change your mind, u can restore the Nandroid backup of the other ROM.

Nandroid is Nandroid and Ext 2 is Ext 2. They are both not related in their purpose.
Apps2ext is only for apps...it does not help you save the setup of the phone.
While a Nandroid backup will capture and save the current state of your phone and settings such as wallpaper, ringtone, sms, and apps and other personalised settings for that particular ROM that you are testing.
So if u screw up your phone or brick your phone, u only need to restore back a copy of your Nandroid backup without having to reflash the ROM and going thru the whole process of Gapps, setting up the phone..etc..etc..
A Nandroid backup will restore back your phone to the same state it was b4 u screw up your phone.

Noob question on CWM backups

Hi all,
A question regarding backups:
I am currently on CM7 MIUI.US and am thinking of switching back to GB roms. If I do a backup on CWM now, and flashing stock GB + roms over, and if I so happen to not like the ROM and wishes to go back to MIUI, I can simply do a restore on my old backup is that correct?
Now backing up, do I need to do a factory reset? I am okay with cache + dalvik wipes, but factory resetting will reset all the customisation done on my MIUI rom and it is a nasty thing to do all over again (dragging and sorting all the apps into respective folders )
And I would have to use TiB to do all the restoration of my apps! and I would have to choose what apps to backup etc etc..
Thanks for any answers xda folks!
well you can maker a nandroid backup in CWM this is like an ISO image of the whole ROM, whether you will have issues restoring it on GB roms i dont know.
You could make a backup using the MIUI backup (which backs up settings and screen layouts and so on) but this would only be able to restore on MIUI ROM (if you decide to go back)
I would make a backup using MIUI, and make a backup using Ti Backup (if you have the paid version its all automated, No need to press DONE after each app has backed up)
Hope this helps.
EDIT: you could make a nandroid backup too, what the hell, if your flashing anyway, Im just not 100% sure it will work.
Yea i was asking if backing up nandroid will help when i want to revert.. But thanks for the heads up on the miui backup! And yeah I have tib pro so restoring isn't a pain, the tough part is the choosing of the apps to restore..

Well restoring a nandroid backup of a MIUI ROM and restoring it on a Different ROM MAY cause problems (ive never tried this)
Restore all your apps !! if you need to choose you obviously have too many and dont use them.
Delete the junk, Keep the good save yourself some space too !!
(im also an app collector lol)
There are those files from like 162939594 years ago that I use TiB to backup and never restored

Will flashing a new ROM wipe everything?

My main question is that I want to go to the ROM F1 Galaxy S II V6 - SP1 [Look & Feel Of Galaxy S II] or to another updated ROM.
I am coming from froyo 2.2 JK2 (with VooDoo). If I do this flash will I loose all my app data/other data? Is there a way to flash the ROM and save this data? I don't mind losing messages or bookmarks, I just don't want to have to install all of my apps again.
Thank you!

each rom is different, some are wipe version, some are non-wipe. There are a lot of good arguments for cleaning your phone and doing a clean install every time you change rom -- although most people don't, hence the length of threads with people having issues from legacy data and programs having incompatibility issues.
As a general rule prior to flashing any new rom or kernel you should:
1. do a complete nandroid backup in recovery
2. backup your apps using Titanium backup or similar
3. copy the Titanium backup, your photos, music, contacts etc. to your PC
4. then flash, clean and reformat as required without fear of being able to recover important data and files.
Again, some do this. Many don't. Depends how frequently you are flashing and how replaceable your files are.
+1 to that, I highly recommend you do a full wipe, Its not that difficult with apps such as titanium backup, It does all the hard work for you.
Doing a wipe ensures no bugs will be carried over and you will get the best result.
i wouldnt say a wipe is necessary when upgrading to a newer version of the same ROM

You can sync your all your contacts with your Google account and then just install and re-sync Facebook after flashing need Rom..

Nandroid backs everything up. It makes a disc image of the current rom. When you restore a nandroid backup, you restore the entire image.
You won't be able to restore the facebook links using titanium backup. Samsung updated the contact app when upgrading from Froyo to GB. I tried restoring data from Froyo apps to GB apps, and I got so many force close I ended up having reflash the rom. Note this only applies to stock apps. You can restore your market apps without any problem.

Nandroid restore problem

Basically I'm using ICS333 which is great and to do I was trying to make some changes to the stock contacts apps. Anyway, I did a nandroid backup via CWM 5.5 so that I can restore if anything went wrong and sure enough I flashed something meant for JB. I went to restore my backup and afterwards rebooted... except now it is stuck in a loop when it reaches the ICS loading screen.
The only way to make it boot in ICS now is to wipe all personal data... which makes the backup meaningless.
In all honesty, the only thing I really want to keep is my whatsapp and texts. I'm currently trying to restore individual bits of the backup to see what causes the problem but can I extract data from a Nandroid backup?
This day gets better, now my home button doesn't work!

yes, download a nandroid browser from play store, and try My Android solutions (link below) for a suitable remedy
For for the tips, I used Titanium backup to retrieve some of the info but didn't to junk the rest. Less crap on the phone means it runs like butter again!
