The truth about cellphones (must read) - Off-topic

True story : I picked up a load of colored painted lumber in Atlanta and dropped it off in Lancaster, pa. An Amish family that made high end custom play sets for rich folks and wow the stuff the could build seemed like some from a Harry Potter movie. We started talking about technology and they didn't desire to have a cellphone or any phone for that matter. They seemed so much at peace with just the basics in life. Clearly they live in a area with malls but still appreciated life in a simple form. Now its 2011 and most folks can't go a day without cellphone use, and have a piss fit if they cell is about to die while at the mall. We stand in long lines waiting for the new it phone then rush home to make an unboxing video as others tune to watch us in awe to remove the plastic off a device. We call up the carriers begging for an update to get a new device.. log in to sites like this and complain about the device and while asking developers to stop spending time with your family and hurry up on that root so i can do a whole bunch of nothing with my phone. I'm not saying cellphones are bad, if your wife ran out to pick up pizza and got a flat you definitely want her to have one in that situation. I'm talking bout being apart of the gimmick crowd...

I'm happy to be there. My firm belief is that technology will produce the paradise we all want. Unlike some conservative types, I don't adhere to the rule of suffering in life all the time. They think the only good person is one who is 24/7/365 suffering and doing without. We make technology to overcome the environment, not to continue to suffer in it. The only reason there is any form of suffering in the world is because technology hasn't developed to the point of addressing all of the needs. As long as a person holds onto their ethical and moral integrity, suffering is needless.

Don't like this idea. Some people always say that these are just devices that call and text, everything else is excess and we don't need it in our daily lives. Like we should be grateful we have them. But this is called progress. At one time, we didn't have cars or color tv or this latest gadget. And we have adjusted our lives accordingly so that they are essentials in day to day living. It's foolish to just live in the past or sit still, the world moves at a fast pace. If we didn't feel a need for more, innovation would just stop. They don't even call cell phones "cell phones" anymore, they call them mobiles because that's what they are. Mobile devices

Yes, I agree with you geeksquadryder. As we are forgetting what a real life is? We need mobiles for doing our daily work but some people getting mobiles for not satisfying must needs but for fun. We know how much impact these mobiles can have in our life in helping and ruining. So, its upto the head of the home to teach or drive his/her home to be happy with/without things of needed.

Our biggest mistake was coming down from the trees in the first place. Everything since then is just compounded error. Too late to go back now!

people are constantly saying how technology has made ungrateful and ruined lives. I don't see how wanting the most out of your phone can ruin your life. This is called evolution/progress. I'm glad we have cell phones and I'm glad technology is getting better and I hope one day I won't have to lift a finger to do many of the tedious tasks I do on a day to day basis.

If we just stick to "need" when we live life, we'd be a very poor society. Much of the art and technology we have today have made it so far for want of innovation and pleasure. And yes, also for pure fun.
It's not excessive, it's creative, new, interesting and in this way, important. Especially since we came down from the trees...

That would be 1970's tech to the Amish.
By the way, anyone know what an Amish guy's arm up a horse's butt is? A mechanic.

I do often think the Amish and others of that ilk have the right idea. It may be luddism but as a society i bet they are generally happier than the rest of the world at large.

Sorry to tell you but technology is important. I always remember the economics of technology, where tech has the potential of drastically changing supply, demand or both.
It increases the quality of life, and frees us to do things that are more important, like putting funny captions on pictures of cats instead of adding up a few thousand lines of labour costs.
You read HHGTTG, there was one book where people used leaves as currency...
p/s: I stole that initial quote from Pratchett.

As i said earlier, it's too late to go back now. I disagree that technology improves lives though. More people die because of technology than are saved by it. You have to remember that as a race we have stopped evolving; instead our tools are evolving. Rather than changing to adapt to our environment we are trying to change our environment to adapt to us. This is not a good thing.

Wow, I could berate you over that. But I won't. The reason I want to is because THAT is a main part of the conservative/religious ideal. It's ignorant because they believe they...embodied in their gray matter...have all understanding and knowledge of the universe and existence. Because of this, they push hardship and suffering on society as something good for us.
These pea-brained idiots never consider they do not know everything. They have a thought, and because *they* have that thought, it has to be correct and righteous. So therefor they proceed to prevent society from having peace and they thwart all technological progress as much they can and call it evil. They are the kind that believes only someone who is constantly suffering is a better person. And they do that to people.
They see one aspect of something and conclude that it leads to what they believe it should.
You'll have to pardon my intensity because here in America, that is exactly what happened to my life. My life was wiped out as though it was nothing to me by ideological/religious/conservative zealots. With an attitude of, "You'll thank me when you recover". The only problem is they had no clue how destructive their ideology was to me and it obliterated my life.

I'm a godless Atheist but this is not a religious discussion! I love technology but i admit that the cost far outweighs the benefits. The global gene pool is getting weaker by the day while we rape the planet that we rely on to survive.
Advancement is inevitable but so is entropy. Equilibrium will be returned but i guarantee it won't be in a way that's favourable to human life.

Amen, I mean, I agree to that (zing!).
Truth is, I believe that technology helped me a lot. I mean, Microsoft Excel is a million times better than an A3 piece of paper and a calculator.
But certain techs makes us dumber, and not smarter. We don't use it to expand ourselves and our capabilities, but to limit ourselves and reduce innovation and creativity.
Case in point; iPhone.

What war? The one where they killed everyone for staying in some place long ago, or the one where they kill everyone else for being someone else?
Wait, I got that mixed up, didn't I, it was the one where they killed people for being different, right?
p/s: religion talk is never ok, especially when it gets slightly out of hand. Note the understatement

To all people thinking you're entitled to everything:

You're not entitled to anything. You obviously don't remember the dumbphone era and I have seen a lot of members act like they take all the cool things Windows, IoS, and Android can do for granted. It's a phone and it can text and call. A few years ago, they introduced the ability to REALLY browse the web with phones instead of that blocky, crappy, ugly built in browsers to dumbphones. Now, you get mad if your phone doesn't load something soon enough or if it takes more than 30 seconds to boot up. Just because it's a smart phone doesn't mean it has to do anything. I can take an LG rumor, call that a smart phone. I can take my HTC Hero, break the screen, pull out the MoBo and say it's a smart phone. It's just that since we have all these neat things our phones can do, we act like it's the standard and that android, iOS, and Wp7 owes us. That's not even close to the case. I spent 2 months with a LG Rumor which is known as a dumbphone and I learned that perhaps we should realize what our phones can do are us advancing as a society as a whole rather than "Your phone loads videos sooner than mine!?!!" *throws phone out the window* It's a peice of technology, wait 10 minutes, there will be a better one right around the corner. We advance far too quickly for this kind of petty, childish, bratty behavior. Basically, grow up before you ruin the phone-modding world as a whole by acting like you are 10.
So... what's new? What changed to make this issue worth debating all over again?

Entitlement is a disease.
Most of the younger generations suffer from it.
I only put so much worth into my phone because it triples as my personal computer and music player. I'm a minimalist at heart, so I don't own anything else very technological (not including my TV).
I remember when I bought my Palm Pre. iPhone killer. It was amazing. Then the Moto Droid came out and I thought, oh gee, that's sweet. I stuck with the Pre until June, and bought the Nexus S. Thinking I was now at the pinnacle of mobile technology... only to realize two weeks later 249243 newer, better devices are on their way.
I don't feel I'm entitled to anything....
And I think that smartphones are taking away our lives rather than enhancing them. We txt, email, foursquare, take pictures but do the one thing that they were originally intended for to begin with....
COMMUNICATE.
When I get home now - I have to put the phone on a charger and try and forget about it so I can spend quality time with my wife and son rather then farting around with the phone.

I do agree with the above. If technology is supposed to make it easier to communicate, why are people growing increasingly isolated from each other?

The problem is not entitlement per se - it's feeling entitled to the wrong things. We all are entitled to respect from other people. But we aren't entitled to things or money or positions in society.

I don't even remember posting in it before. Second bite at the apple... i would still say that people being dumb grinds my gears. It's got nothing to do with education. You can teach a monkey to solve puzzles. I'm not impressed by qualifications. Any idiot can memorise a bunch of stuff, regurgitate it in an exam and get 'qualified'.
I respect people for having original thoughts of their own. For being creative. Isaac Newton realised that contemporary Math wasn't cutting it.. so he invented Trigonometry. INVENTED it. I can barely spell it! Of course, while he was mostly focused on turning Lead into Gold, he somehow found the time to discover Gravity and come up with the Laws of Motion.
The highly qualified people is see at work every day are chemical Engineers and even Doctors. I sometimes wonder how some of them even manage to tie their own shoe-lace some days. Most of them are as clever as a block of cheese.
There's no excuse for being dumb. If you feel that perhaps you are dumb? Pick up some books! You've got one lifetime to find out as much as you can about the universe. Don't you feel the clock ticking...?
I can read minds, doesn't that make sense?
It's uncanny how you can sum up my frustrations into one rant. And somehow you managed to remove the swearing I would have incorporated into it as well!

It took an extra five minutes to edit out the swearies..!
Seriously though, i've been around people of all walks of life. There are two individuals that spring to mind. One was a Tree Surgeon, (arborist), and the other was a common labourer...same as i was. The former was my age, my level of 'education', and even in my line of work.. but man did he make me think. He questioned everything, (same as i did), but the conversations we had would go on forever. "If i kicked out the door-stop...", one conversation went.. "where does the energy go when the door slams shut?", he asked. That one went on for hours!
Bearing in mind that this this was a fit, popular guy with a stunning girlfriend and a career in manual labour. He was a wealth of knowledge about Cetaceans, and most anything about the animal kingdom. He taught me that i still had a lot to learn myself! It wasn't the fact that this stuff even crossed his mind that surprised me.. it was that he questioned everything. It was that curiosity that made him awesome. You could see that behind his eyes were cogs that were always turning. Someone else with a thirst for knowledge!
The other example was a kid i knew who was trying to earn a bit of cash-in-hand, doing the hard labour on a day-rate. We'd chat while we worked and we'd get into the deeper discussions of Evolutionary Psychology, for example. Told well, maybe some students will listen... of those, some might even understand the subject matter. Of those who understand, you might find a few who could go one step further and add something novel to the conversation.. come up with an original suggestion or two of their own. So here's a 17 year old kid who having never even thought about it before is suddenly discussing the subject with me like a pro! Not only discussing it, but taking it places even i hadn't thought of. He's making me re-think my own beliefs!
That is insight! That is the same flexibility of mind that led the great thinkers of our time to advance science, not only in small steps, but in giant leaps! Few have that ability..and when it comes, it's often from the most unexpected places! Einstein was a Patent Clerk, for instance. Ok, he was a Math prodigy too, but i bet he didn't waste his free time watching reality TV shows!
If only a fraction of the people in the world were allowed to reach their potential, we'd be in the midst of a second Renaissance right now. Instead, we're held back as a race by short-sightedness, inertia, dogma..and an unforgivable amount of ignorance!
*And that, Ladies and germs, will have to be my rant for the night! I'm sure it could have been a better read, but i'm not one of those who will advance human knowledge in any significant way. One of you you could be though...if you could just get off of your fat, lazy arses first!

Just float on man. No woman is worth the trouble. Just ask error or me. They're a pain in the arse.
-My life is a shooting range, people never change-
Alan, personally i think you're a bloody nice bloke. You're open, honest, sincere.. and i don't think you'd know a scruple if it hit you in the face. Basically you're too nice for most girls you're age. Hell, too nice for most girls full stop. You are in more danger of getting into the 'friendship zone' than any man i know!
All that means is you'll find it hard to find a woman that deserves you. The others will be going after guys that treat them crap, that don't appreciate them and who take them for granted, while you are left looking on from the sidelines wondering to yourself, "what the hell does she see in him?" That is the lot of the nice guy i'm afraid.
The good news is that those aren't the women you want to be with, and you're better off without them anyway. Right now, if one of the more shallow females that you may be acquainted with started showing interest, you would be right to question if there may be a chance that you became a gaping asshole over-night. If however, an equally kind and sincere woman decided to show some interest, no matter how long it took for that to happen, you would know that it's something worth betting the bank on.
The worst thing you could do right now, and the biggest pitfall, would be to try and be someone you're not, just to attract someone you like. Tempting as it may be to try and elevate your status to that of some sort of man-god, women of either kind will see right through that facade. Either way you'd lose!
What you should be doing right now is carrying on with your life. By all means take the opportunity to speak to as many members of the opposite sex as possible. But do it as one person to another, not as some post-pubescent teenager desperate to get his rocks off, Otherwise you may as well tattoo 'i want to get laid' on your forehead, guaranteeing that it will never happen! Don't be a douche, be the nice guy that you actually are. Be yourself.
Of course if you're good, you can fake confidence and charm. I know this from experience. You can trick a woman into liking you. But ultimately, you lose big time doing that. You can't keep up the pretence forever, and you'll always be with a person you have no respect for anyway. Epic Fail basically!
I'd say that perhaps 5% of the worlds population are decent people. People that i personally would want to know. I'd include you in that small percentage. Sadly that means that the odds are stacked against you when it comes to finding a suitable partner. After all, you shouldn't have to settle for one of the 95%, and everyone on your level is fighting it out for the remaining 5%! But on the upside, those 5% of decent women and prospective partners have already ruled out the 95% of sub-standard men and are looking for the 5% that they would be happy with too.
Another way to interpret that is to say that if you are average, and you are looking for average, there's a damn good chance that something will happen for you... no matter how 'average' that something is. If you are above average, and are looking for something that is equally decent, you had better bloody well be patient; but the payoff will be so much better in the end.
The way i see it playing out? One day when you're still scratching around in desperation trying to pinpoint your ideal woman, she'll already be in your life, trying to make herself known to you... and if you're lucky, you won't miss the signals.
Two things:
He is 14 or 15 (should be concentrating on having a life and school)
and he is a Troll...and this comes from a troll...I guess it takes one to know one
If I see any more threads like this I'ma lose it
When i was 15 i was already living with a girl. I wish there had been the Internet back then to vent my spleen in. As it was i had to write letters through a Sunday School support scheme for 'adolescent issues'. If i needed support with my teen problems i was SOL.
Alan is a genuine guy facing the same problems as any guy his age. He deserves a little guidance. God knows i wish i had some at that age!
Great advice Dirk. You are a true gentleman. Wise words as always. I (and I'm sure many others) read and respect many of your posts.

I always see really pretty girls be like made fun of and yet it makes them like them better. I tried that once but ended up being an ass so I stopped and went back to be myself. I also tried to dress differently and didn't like it. So i went back to baggy ripped jeans and a plain $5 shirt.
I also know about the too nice guy thing. People always tell me I'm too nice and when my someone make fun of me someone always tells me why I don't standup for myself....I don't know maybe I just don't like violence or yelling.
Anyways...thanks a lot for this advice!!!!

Am I normal or just weird?

Hey guys,
I haven't been active around XDA for a couple of months now because some poor {i don't even know what word to put here} stole my beloved Wildfire S.
Anyway, I'm one of those people who are the odd one out humans. I have weird music preferences. By this I mean I don't listen to music with actual singing in it too much. I just like music, like dubstep. Some of my fave tracks are:
Noisestorm - Timewarp
Noisestorm - Full Focus
(Some other Noisestorm tracks)
Doctor P - Sweet Shop
Bonobo - Kiara
And so on.
I only play football (I'm in the UK) sometimes with my mates at school. I'm terrible at football, I've never scored a goal ever. And I'm 12. The onnly thing closest to a goal is the one I scored in Fifa 09 at my mates house. I am terrible at every other sport, and all this is due to the fact that I can't run fast, and I can only sprint for like a 5 seconds fast because I have really low stamina. I'm not what you'd call unfit, or fat, I'm just like that. Also, I have serious teeth issues because it's is my crap genetics. I always get called geek or nerd at school, and I'm not even like one. I'm always late, my school are considering contacting the goverment about my punctuality (I think that's just intimidation. There are people x10 later then me.) I like being called a geek, because my theory is that people call eachother geeks or nerds because they know that they're smarter then them. I want to be smart, because it's good to know stuff. Also, I got really bad luck, I don't own a console so entertaining myself is hard. I love playing MW3, I'm terrible at it, but I got my good moments. My mate comes over with his PS3 and we play. He gets bored playing by himself. We always play split screen, and we use teamwork. Also, some {still don't have a word | printf( "Grrrrrrr\n" ); } stole my Wildfire S, and I was still developing my basic ROMs and my personal kernel for it. Now there's no point. I loved that phone. If you want to know more, there's a link in my signature.
Anyway, at then end of the day, am I just a regular human, or am I a bit weird?
If you think you're a bit weird, feel free to post about it. We're all friends here.
Thanks for reading this extremely long post. My fingers have the stamina for that, lol.
I'm also scared that when I do my 666th post, I'll get banned for it.
What do you think is normal if that's weird? Not everyone is amazing at sports, there's nothing wrong with that. I have to say congratulations on actually knowing how to type and speak English well at age 12, that's pretty impressive

Definitely pretty normal. You've got 14 more years for your brain to finish developing and for you to figure out who you are. Don't worry about life. Just get good grades and be yourself.
I know that feel bro.
It's totally normal.
If you keep going, things will just fall into place.
I wouldn't worry.

I'm like you buddy. Fourteen years, talk a lot at the school, but for my friends I'm the biggest nerd of the world. But I like heavy metal. I also like to play video games and use the computer. And,of course, I waste hours of my day creating things for my phone, like roms, and compiling things from the source. For me It isn't being "weird". its a way of life......

No you're not normal.
You know why?
Normal doesn't exist. It was a term made up by the media and other influential people so they can push everyone else out and say they're strange because they don't fit into the niche.
So, no you're not normal but that's a good thing.
''Evil corrupts the mind of the weak but fails to feed off the mind of the strong''
Why on earth would you want to be normal?
Normal is dull. Do you really want to be just another sheep in that herd of mindless cattle on the street? Be yourself, not what you think others want you to be. There already are enough brain dead idiots polluting the gene pool.
Besides, nobody here can be considered normal. Nobody wants to be. There are 4.6 million people here, and I estimate about 80% of those are what society considers 'abnormal'. Take my advice on this, you don't want to be normal. (for one, you'd have to dislike Android and get an iPhone.)
My story? I'm Female (yes, we exist!), I'm a gamer, I'm a Scifi fan, I hate sports, My IQ is over 180, My brain isn't capable of shutting up, I don't socialize (form of APD) and I think humanity is a collection of the stupid, the mindless and the moronic. You think you're weird? If I got a euro for every time someone calls me a Freak, I'd be in the Quote 500.
Be you. Normal is for idiots.

Are you mindless and/or stupid? No? Then you're not a part of that category. I'm sure you know what I mean by the mindless cattle, though. How many people push a door that says "PULL" on it in big letters?
Didn't say it was important. Just that a higher number makes you different from the average person. The fact does remain that a higher IQ usually brings a lot of supposed 'personality problems' with it. Like Antisocial Personality Disorder, Aspergers and a general lack of social skills and/or emotional/empathic skills.. Frankly all those are just stupid people feeling a need to label everything that isn't the way they are.
It's just another thing that makes people think you're weird, it has nothing to do whether or not it's actually important. You don't need a high IQ to live or be happy. (You're generally more happy with a low IQ.)

Thanks everybody. Good to hear lots of people's opinions. Now that I think about it, if people don't like me, who cares? There are other people who'll like me and want to be friends. I've already got some cool friends. We'll back eachother up anytime.
Anyway, to add to my bad luck, today I stepped on a nail and I'm bleeding under my skin. Eh well. Stuff happens. So today I took out the nail. Also, I've been sick for the last cople of days. I've got a very strong immune system, so I didn't like it. And my baby sister, who's 2 weeks old now, is always crying. Not that I have a problem with that. But normally I'd chher her up, but I can't because I' sick and I don't have the energy to do anything.
I'm still sad that someone stole my phone. Did anyone read the thread about it? Link is in my signature if you want to. Anyway, I'm saving so maybe I can get my hands on a HTC Desire HD, or something better. I've sold some stuff on eBay, made £30 quid. Not nearly enough though. Next I'll sell a barely used Intel i3 processer, if anyone's interested.
Thanks again for your opinions. Now I'm going to thank every post. Too bad I only get 20 thanks per day. That's anti-productive/anti-thankful/anti-nice.
Would anyone like to share anything aout themselves. I'm BOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEDDDDDDDDDD! And I don't want Twitter to be my only source of entrtainment. It's dead.
Now I'm limited to 8 thanks per day! WHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYY?
You should meet Alan, I reckon you two would get along.

Do you guys think naturally good-looking people are happier?

Since this is off-topic I was just thinking to come up with this subject. I know plenty of people who I consider good-looking but I'm curious what their day-to-day life is like compared to average-looking people. I consider myself average, though I've been called ugly and beautiful throughout my life. I don't really care about that stuff. I just want to be myself (even though in certain situations it seems pretty difficult for me). Not everybody will like me and I think I shouldn't even make myself likeable to everybody. I'd rather be considered average-looking and be happy in my own skin and know that I am healthy than be considered attractive by most people and be getting a lot of negative thoughts/things (like accidents, conflicts, murder) because of the competition inbetween same-sexes. I don't want that to happen to anyone. I'm just sayin'.
What do you think?
Well I'm happy and up myself, also have a healthy diet and am extremely skinny, though I eat tonnes. I'm also very nieve when it comes to bad things in the world and I don't think deeply about the world.
That's my story and I consider myself very happy. Don't know if its relevant though.
In my experience what you look like has nothing to do with how you interpret your time here. The two are mutually exclusive. If you're extremely good looking then it may open some doors for you, both figuratively and literally, but it will not change the core of who you are. That only changes with your own life experiences and cannot be guided or altered by single factors, like "beauty".
Alternatively, if you're extremely bad looking then you may have what others would consider a more difficult life. It all depends on what you think life is, and how you live it. If you spend your life looking for love and companionship, then being extremely attractive or extremely unattractive will probably stop that happening. However, you're more likely better off ugly in that case, as if you do find companionship with someone then you'll know without doubt that they love you for who you are. If you're very attractive then you'll most likely never find the good people in the sea of suitors that are only interested in what you look like, and not who you are.
In all honesty I'd say you have more chance of true happiness if you're simply average. You're more like the majority of people, and you're less likely to be either used or abused because of how you look.
Life is easier for good looking people. That's a simple fact. They're more likely to be hired, get a raise, find companionship and people treat them better and are more likely to help them. There's millions of research papers on this. Even to the point where women wearing high heels are more successful at getting people to listen to a charity speech on the street compared to women wearing flat shoes.
But because everything comes easier to them, they're also usually a lot less pleasant to be around.
If social interaction and companionship is important to you, then yes, being good looking makes you happier. Good looking people have more friends, people want to spend more time with them and they have less difficulty finding partners. Because people are horribly superficial. In theory relationships are based on enjoying eachother's company, but 90% of the time people will pick someone pretty over someone whose personality they like.
Personally I really don't care what others think of how I look. I'm average with a not-so-average hair colour. But as someone who's job hunting I have noticed they always hire the pretty ones over everyone else.

I would like to politely disagree to everything stated in the quoted paragraph.
While having a hot girlfriend seems great for a little while, long term people are more likely to stay is a committed relationship if they choose a partner they feel a bond with, brains rather than beauty etc.
Also, lasting friendships are more likely to be made with people based on interests or other bonds, rather than looks.
So it comes down to while people may choose beauty over brains these relationships (friend or intimate) are generally shorter than those not.

You're free to disagree.
Sadly humans are a lot less decent than you believe them to be.
If people cared more for connection than looks, there wouldn't be so many affairs, cheaters and mistresses.
And even more regrettable is the fact that this this part of the teason humanity made it to the top of the foodchain. Partnering based on looks is as old as humanity itself.
I have seen millions of marriages fall apart because the woman stopped looking like she was 25. In the less modern cultures in the Middle East men take girls of 15 years old as their partners because their faith decides they should. And when the girl's breasts start to sag, they take another. And another. You can't tell me a 60 year old man forcing a 15 year old girl into a marriage (and consequentially sex) has anything to do with long term, brains or connections.
It is human nature for women to crave a long lasting connection (due to children requiring a lifetime connection), and for men to spread out their seed as much as possible to ensure the largest change of passing on their genes.
And by evolutionary reasoning, pretty people have better genes.
Modern society may wear a mask of 'decency' to hide that instinct, but it is still very much an active factor.
Do I sound cold, distant and possibly arrogant? Probably. I am both aromantic and asexual. That allows me to see humanity without the lies people tell themselves to feel like they're not sex-obsessed animals who learned to talk. Does that make me a freak? Many will certainly think exactly that right now.

Thanks. Cause I still do. You may believe that humanity is full of liars, cheaters, and people who value beauty over brains, but once you remove media (which is always so pessimistic) out of the equation and just look at the real world, I believe the percentage of people valuing beauty over brains is actually quite small compared to the opposite.
Maybe I just live in a more positive community, but I generally find many more people who value brains, head over heart etc.
Feel free to continue disagreeing though. I'm interested in others opinions also.

Great point! Me being up myself makes me happy. I can believe I'm really good looking but to be honest I'm probably average.
Well I see really interesting discussion over here. Back to topic. I have been considering myself as a average-bad looking person. Lately my psychologist showed me another point of view. Then I realised rather than being bad-avreage looking person I am good looking person. I started to pay much more attention to what people say about my appearance and I realised that people really consider me as a really good looking person. I must admit that realising that I am good looking person made my life happier. Sorry for some mistakes English is not my primary language
i think it has to do with self-confidence and recognizing ones good looks, at least in regard to the subjective opinion of the society.
People may say "It has nothing to do with looks".
I disagree.
Looks do play a part, though it is not everything.
I would say Im good looking. It has some advantages like average people tend to hang out with good looking and popular people.
Key sentence:
Good looks give you a start. Where you go from there depends on who you are.
BUT. Let me also add. If you are a Female. Good looks makes everything very very different.
Good looks for guys is not a big deal. Popularity, machoness, over confidence etc matters. Im good looking, yet a shy guy. Let me tell you life aint too good for me.
