Captivate I897 micro usb Charging port. Is it modular or soldered? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello
I'm having problems charging my captivate. It's not the micro usb cable because I have tried multiple ones. I do receive power but its not just simply "plug and play". I literally have to tinker with it and if the phone is interrupted it stops charging.
I priced the repair for it online and cell phone repair shops want 60$. I looked up the (SAMSUNG I897 CHARGING PORT) and its 3$. My question to anyone who has repaired or knows. Is this piece modular or is it soldered to the circuit board.
This is the part I'm referencing to.

Thanks for all you help

I've never taken mine apart to find out but I just saw this post by Statstalker that has some pics of his USB port and it appears to be soldered. Hope that helps.

[Q] USB/charging port

Does anyone else have an i9000 that has a very shotty USB/charging port? With mine, I can plug in any microusb b cable, and it will charge ok (if the cable changes angles in the port, it will stop charging). If I use a USB to MicroUSB b cable with my computer, it doesn't detect it in windows at all, but it will charge. If I move the cable around, sometimes (85% fail rate) it will see the device, but show that there is a USB malfunction, and "device not recognized". Somehow, I managed to get this working just enough to be able to flash stock gingerbread 2.3.3 XWJVB from Eclair, which came installed.
However, since then, I only get the device not recognized error.. anything I can try? or should I possibly look into replacing the charging port? I've tried cleaning the port with rubbing alcohol, and it doesn't seem to help..
Same problem here fella, looked on google at loads of threads about unknown device and have yet to find a solution.
My guess is dodgy soldered joint where port joins motherboard or whatever, worth opening up and checking

I took the same train of thought before getting your reply. It was correct as well, its only 6screws to remove the back and then the usb port is very accessible.
Quick clean with some screen cleaner and I was on my way Certainly true what alot of the threads on this matter say. Corrorison!
Corrosion even! Lol

mini micro USB is defect (battery will not charged)

Hello,
unfortunately, my micro USB connector is broken.
The battery will not charged.
Is there an instruction how can I change the mini micro USB or is there another possibility.
greets uzzoo
You can buy a seperate charger that charges the battery out of the phone, its expensive to have the micro USB port swopped out - unless you are to the job your self :
An external charger I ordered mine.
Would like to change the USB port itself, there is a tutorial somewhere as I ran to get the board?

The simple fact that you are asking for a tutorial means that you will not be able to do this job. It requires removing and replacing the actual port from the motherboard which requires some precision soldering. Send it away for repair if you wish it to be fixed.

That's a bit presumptuous! The OP might well be confident with soldering and internal electronics and by the sound of his post is (possibly! ) looking for a diagram of the board itself.
It is indeed a tricky job but the guys in the repair centre started somewhere too. For all we know the OP might even consider his HD2 expandable for such a learning experience!
Good luck OP. And you can't go wrong with an external battery charger, couple of £s from eBay. Although ive found they tend to only charge to 99% and lose the first 10% quicker than if you'd charged via the phone.

I had this exact problem a few months ago. If you find a very skilled solderer... i.e. someone competent solder smd devices then you can re-solder the usb connector back onto the board. I would not advise doing this if you are new to soldering!
If you can't then its a new motherboard, and HTC will not pay for it under warranty because its deemed damage do to excessive use.
no the only thing you can do is a new motherboard it is'nt possible to fix it i have had the same problem cost me 200 euro.

Repaired my HTC Incredible S USB-Port

Wow, I feel like McGuyver.
My Incredible S stopped charging when I was fiddling around with a car charger. Also USB-data connection to the computer did not work anymore.
I suspected that there was a fault in the car electric and a chip was blown by too high voltage.
I still have had a torx driver since I changed the screen on my former Wildfire. So I wanted to see if there was a little chance to repair it.
When I opened the device I could not see anything burnt or so inside. The USB-Port was connected with a flex cable to the main board. I removed it. Then I connected the port to an USB-Port of my computer and tried to measure if there was any voltage. Of course I "managed" to create a shortcut while measuring and my computer shut down immediately. Anyway, I had the impression that there was no voltage at the end of the flex cable. I did a little Google search and found out that there were some offerings for an "USB Flex Board" for the Incredible S. So I decided to spend the 25€ on this little piece of nothing.
Today I replaced the old USB - et voila - it works!
I found some articles on the net from people with similar problems but no solution. So I hope this might help. Perhaps the flex cable blows easily or the solder joints between port and flex cable get broken after a while. Somebody offers the USB-socket without flex cable. This is completely useless because the socket won't broke and you won't be able to solder it on the little flex cable.
If you want to try it on your own. I highly recommend to watch the YT-Video on how to open the Incredible. You should have the torx driver and a very small watchmaker driver for these two very little screws on the main board.

There are many more on YT just do a search.

Same to me before it fully stopped working. I suspect the soldering joints are breaking after a while.
Mine is broken too.
Thank you for that. I've ordered a new one and hope it will work again
I've got to admit that's dedication. If that happened to my phone id just buy a new one lol. So well done!

Thank you for sharing. I'm undecided whether I should repair for myself and really void the guarantee or if I should send it to HTC for repair.
Why did you not use guarantee? HTC provides 24 months?
Don't you trust "Arvato Services Solution GmbH"?
Have you been afraid of being rejected because of S-OFF?
It seems that one can buy the USB connector also at ebay:
Search for "USB Power Charger Charging Connector Port Flex Cable HTC Incredible S S710e G11" or similar.

My warranty was void anyway through heavy ROM-Flashing and I thought I cooked a chip inside at first. If you still have warranty you should send it in of course.
But you have to wait for a while and you won't feel like McGuyver
Thanks for the info and for posting the info!
Firstly, I would apologize for replying to a year old thread.
@tricki, thanks for your post. You gave me the courage to replace my damaged USB port. For my fellow Inc S users who have a damaged USB port, you can find all the required replacement parts in ebay. The replacement takes 15 to 20 minutes (Okay, 30 min. for a first timer). Make sure you purchase a kapton tape just in case your old tape inside the phone refuses to stick again (like mine!). To remove the two tiny screws on the motherboard, you need a #0 philips screw driver (I did not have this at hand the first time I opened the device, so I had to order one and wait for it to arrive). Be gentle while flipping the mother board..It is not that hard anyway.
I posted this because I wanted to share my experience with you guys. My phone is now charging normally and the most important part is.... my computer detects my phone properly!
I also changed my usb port. It's really easy to do it. So, do not waste yours money and just do it.

[Q] Galaxy note charging issue - replaced charging port but still not fixed. help

Hi All,
I have read other threads and can not find answer so that is why i am creating this thread.
basic things to know...
1. Got my Galaxy Note (GN) off ebay. It came with the following major issue: "cannot be charged via laptop's usb port or wall socket"
2. GN does not have a custom rom. It is unlocked to any network. So, i am assuming it has a "stock rom". can someone tell me how to verify that?
3. I looked into various threads and ultimately decided to replace my usb charging port.
4. I should mention that before any replacement of parts whatsoever, i could see my device on windows and transfer files etc. via usb connection.
5. before and after replacement, it says its "charging" but nothing gets charged. If anything the battery level goes down. This suggests to me that there is an issue with charging circuitry somewhere? anyone can shed light on it?
6. Currently i am using an external charger to charge up my battery. Battery is fine as it gets charged up, just fine.
7. What other options do i have to find out the solution to my charging issues. Anything i can do to narrow down the issue further?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Ebay is your best friend. You can change the charging usb port for less than 10 dollars. I bought mine from chinese supplier. The board cost me less than 9 dollars, shipped. It came within 2 weeks. You must open up your phone (8 tiny screws- see youtube video on how to open up n7000). The board comes out easily. You must check the revision on the usb port. Mine is 1.0. It also comes in 0.0, 0.8 and 2.0. I got the exact one with matching colors as the original part. I saw the same board in different revisions and with different colored boards. I got the same exact one, looking at the ebay picture. I was able to change my board in less than 10 minutes. problem solved.

I have already changed the usb port and the problem persists.
How much of an issue will it be if the revision number do not match up with original one?
i dont have tools infront of me so i cant check whether there is a direct match or not.
thanks for reply.

I think matching the revision is important. you must have your original part to verify which was the original revision. I have seen on threads where the revision was not matched and the part didn't help solve the problem.

Check if U607 and R619 are good, they are on the main board.
Download service manual to identify those parts and first check for bad solder joint.
I hqve the same priblem but i didnt check the part numbers gunna have a look for them now. In all honesty i thought it wouldnt matter as they may have been all the exact same

Whoah, seriously? Seems kinda like overkill. What I've heard most is having to hold the cable in 'just' the right position for it to charge, which doesn' t sound like a mainboard issue, since the charge port is connected via a ribbon block (and an antenna cable).
What's odd is that the charge port board on mine has this problem, but it is ROCK SOLID and the connector blade inside is totally clean. Pushing the plug down towards the back of the phone would, based on the physical layout of the internal USB pins, if anything, REDUCE contact pressure. It seems like this is a non-permanent problem and I SWEAR I saw an amazon post somewhere where a guy describes a simple physical mod that suddenly lets all normal charges work fine. Just can't find it...
I have a Samsung Note 2, same thing...not charging through the port, battery is good, charger is good, changed the charge port circuit and nothing...re installed the operating system, it's unlocked, rooted..works fine as long as I charge the battery externally...I have no idea what to do or which direction to go...any help...and I'll keep everyone posted as to the results of any suggestions...goo part is...I know how to get the thing apart....Blessings, As Always...
Same here - changed micro usb board and still not charging
Hi
I have the same problem. Have samd=sung galaxy note N7000 and suddenly stopped charging.
I changed the micro-usb port - it is the same version as the one inside. The mobile is still not charging! :crying:
Has anyone found a solution to this ?
even stranger
Have just noticed that the mobile charges fine in the car with the charger that originally caused the problem.
However it will charge with nothing else - neither USB port of PC not directly to wall socket.
Could the car charger have set it to charge at a higher voltage?

Hi all,
Sorry to revive an ageing thread but this still seems to be an issue at large.
I have a question:
I am a little confused. After seeing a number of these charge port PCB's on Ebay, some sellers are saying only for Rev 0.8 and others say nothing at all, yet in ALL the images from numerous sellers, the PCB's have Rev 1.0 written on them including my own N7000's charge port PCB.
Please could someone enlighten me?
Many thanks!
changed usb port after charging probs
Hi there,
I am having the same damn problem. After having charging probs and a loose connection, I decided to buy a new usb port and everything should be fine again. After replacing the port i tried to charge before installing the back case part and everything worked! But after putting the phone back into the case it went back to the problem like before replacing the port. It is loose and i cant get a pc connection to work.
So after disassembling it several times and reading forum posts in several boards i found this thread which has not the answer for the problem but some suggestions what could cause the problem.
I think it is not worth it to change the Motherboard too but if someone could test it that would help I think.
In another board someone wrote he had 3 port boards bought and they were all dead on arrival. So i believe this could also be the problem what do you think? Did anyone try different replacement parts from different shops?
And is yours charging if you do not install the backplate/backcase?
where did you buy the port? and is it same revision that was in their.
I think a new cable (proper quality) fixes it
that or pc driver reinstall

Hello,
Got a similar problem. Samsung note 1 (n7000) wasn't charging the battery. Holding the mini usb down was the trick.
I bought a new charging port and replaced it. The thing....it is charging now...but giving me: Emergency calls only!
Send back that part and got it replaced.... Just installed it and again: Emergency calls only...
It does show that it has reception. It's not due to my carrier as sim in another phone is working ok. Replacing the old part solves the problem.
If anyone has an idea how to solve this problem.....PLEASE let me know.

the speaker is attached to the plastic cover on top of the usb port. it is not making contact with the right points.
try it whilst the phone is on, play a audio or video file and hold down that part with your fingers. u will see that it will work.
meaning that the screws are either loose or too tight and not properly aligned.

Usb charger port question!

Hi guys,
I hope this thread is in the right place but I have a question.
My usb charge port got bent a little bit and I had trouble charging my phone so I ordered from eBay the part I needed which is this thingy
http://i.ebayimg.com/t/New-USB-Charger-Port-Flex-Cable-Replacement-For-Samsung-Galaxy-Note-N7000-i9220-/00/s/NTAwWDUwMA==/z/4msAAOxyMxpRpE~d/$(KGrHqMOKpYFGWfj3M)VBRpE+d(Spw~~60_12.JPG
and then when I got it I installed it according to an excellent guide I found on youtube.
When I installed it,the USB charge port came back to life but the microphone (which I late found out was attached to the same flex part) was broken so I had to use my speaker for two weeks until the seller shipped the part again.
Today I installed the part again and now the USB charge port works fine, the microphone works fine, but to my supprise - the speaker doesn't!
My question is :
1.is the speaker also connected to this part and due to that I have this problem or is it possible that something else went wrong ?
Please only answer if you're sure of what you say.
2.Where can I get this part (OME) from a place that will surely send a working part ? (if it's not possible to write it down here, please PM me)
Thank to all you helpers out there!!!

your speaker is fine its just the usb ports we have on ebay is plain Sh#t quality. The usb port has the mic and also the audio circuitry built-in. The speaker module goes on top of the usb port so it has connection to the usb port as well. The ebay n700 usb ports are all garbage and I have lost a lot of money on their crappy parts. make sure you have the same revision as your original part. mine was rev 1.0. You have to get the original part with the tape on the back of the usb port covering the antenna. the tape is dark brown. I have yet to find this part. I have ordered 6 usb ports from different sellers and only one worked and even then I had problems with signal. Seems to me it reduced the cell signal by 30%.
Good luck.
