[Q] Difference between install zip and custom install in xrecovery - XPERIA X8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys! Im actually new here. What is the differences between install zip and custom install zip in Xrecovery?

There is no "install zip" option. Maybe you mean "install update.zip from SD".
If that is the case, "install update.zip from SD" installs a zip named update.zip located in the root of your SD card.
"install custom zip" is the same thing with the above except now a list of your files inside the SD card appears and you get to choose what zip to install.

I chose install custom zip in xrecovery, but there is no list letting me choose what to install. It just appears a sentence, just like when i press install update.zip. Or maybe they are both the same?

Oh yes I forgot. After chosing that, there will be two options. "Install update.zip" and "install custom zip" from what I remember. Choose the second one.

How do I apply a font.

I don't really know much about being rooted. I know that my brother rooted my MT3G and I have the newest firmware. I got the font zip, (I didn't unzip it) Then I went to OI file manager and renamed it to update.zip. I booted into the menu where it has "reboot" "apply update.zip" "apply any update.zip" yada yada
So I go to apply update.zip. It says it could transfer. Anyhelp?

Is it necessary to rename to update.zip

Hi I just have a quick question.
Is it necessary to rename every theme or update to update.zip?
I've been using "Apply zip from SD" and everything seems to be working fine but is there anything I'm missing from not renaming?

No they work the same way. Update.zip is now only used for very important flashing, i.e.radios and spl's
I see, thank you.

HOW TO?

How to apply a theme? Like generation x theme?
Can someone give me a link or teach me how to do it?
THEMES SECTION .

Doesn't the thread tell you how to? You need CWM recover and install it as a zip file. Or you can rename it to update.zip and install it using 2e recovery. Just put it in the root of your internal SD (as in not inside any folder) and select "install update.zip" in recovery mode.

[Q] Just got a Captivate, ClockworkMod not showing mod install option on reboot

I tried installing this ROM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=880859
I got the phone rooted, organized Rom Manager and got the ClockworkMod Recovery going.
I placed the zip file for the mod in the root of the phone memory.
The issue is that upon booting into clockworkmod, I do not get any option to flash the rom, only the regular options such as reboot etc.
Any idea why this wouldn't show?
I am using the "Install from SD card" in rom manager, tried a few other roms same issue. It seems as though the CWM isn't seeing the zip files in the root of the phone memory Sad I even tried renaming the file update.zip

you arent supposed to rename the rom file to update.zip
when you flash clockwork recovery manager it puts an update.zip on your /sdcard for you. you have to select reinstall packages let it reboot back to recovery then select reinstall packages again.
I know. I did not rename the file initially. I put the original rom zip file in the root directory. I use the install from memory card option on rom manager but when it reboots into the recovery area I see no option to use the rom file.
root directory? u mean very "root"(/) right?
have u try to put the rom in the home directory? path is /mnt/sdcard
If its a blue screen than u have to hit reinstall packages if your in the green screen then under where it says reboot there should be a choice that says install zip from SD card pick that one and u should then be able to see your rom.

you wouldn't happen to know a good page with step by step instructions?
no...im sorry
I have also just recently rooted my phone and what I did was download the .zip file for a theme and renamed it update.zip then put it onto my sd card, then went into recovery and installed the update.zip file then rebooted my phone and that worked just fine for me
Update.zip is how you get into Clockwork Recovery, so you definitely don't want to rename another file to that...
Boot into CWM by holding volume - volume + and power, select "apply:update.zip", then "install zip from sd", "select zip from sd", find the zip and install. Then reboot. Note: you need to be running a deodexed ROM in order for themes to work properly

Really, cuz that's what I did and I didn't have any problems, my phone is working just fine, and I can still get into recovery.
There is ABSOLUTELY no need to rename the file update.zip just put the file on your sdcard, get into recovery (easiest way is to hold down power and press recovery in the menu) click apply zip from SD, click the file and click install...done

if there are two files that i downloaded for a theme... such as META-INF and System, would i put them both in the same file when moving them to the SD card then just name the file something.zip? or would i only change the name of one of the two files? also am i able just to reboot into recovery from rom manager in order in install this file ?
to install a theme....
1. download it
2. put it on your sdcard (i make folders ie themes, roms, kernels)
3. boot into cwr
4. wipe cache (optional imo)
5. select install from sdcard
6. navigate to theme file
7. flash it
8. reboot
9. profit (optional)

Using rom manager is completely fine, I haven't tested it with the new recovery I've been using the shutdown menu but don't see.why it wouldn't work.
You don't have to extract any of those files from the zip just leave them in there, leave the zip on your sdcard and navigate to it through recovery. Its easier to put the zip in the root of your sdcard for easy access but if the zip is in downloads or something for whatever reason you can just click the downloads folder andthen the file then install.
Also after you install you might need to press your search button to go back a page then click reboot and you're good
