Droid 3 has been rooted - Motorola Droid 3

Instructions for rooting: http://vulnfactory.org/blog/2011/08/25/rooting-the-droid-3/
As promised, I have successfully rooted the Droid 3. I still have never physically touched a Droid 3 phone.
If you appreciate this work, feel free to donate to KrazyKrivda so I can get a phone out of this deal:

do not release this yet...
I think you should wait to release this until after the Bionic has been out for a few days so they don't/can't patch it closed before it ships - I suspect whatever process you used will work there as well.

You're my hero right now If I had anything to donate to you I certainly would, for now all I can give is praise for your wonderful work though. If I get anything extra though I'll send it your way.

It's absolutely up to Dan to decide about a publication, but he is a security guy, I don't think it fits in his philosophy to keep something hidden, secret.
Keep in mind, exploits can be used on malicious ways as well. So I always back publications of vulnerabilities and thus enabling developers to fix them. It gives us more secure devices.
Otherwise said, I do not blame Motorola/Verizon for fixing all the vulnerabilities, I blame them for locking down devices!
And, like another one said before, it is highly unlikely Bionic will have a patch for this. Bionic users will benefit from this exploit, I'm sure.

Lol good. It's good to know we have brave devs willing to take on the challenge..not just ranting about how dumb they think the bootloader issue is or how angry they are with it. I would be as voluntary as you if I had the money to risk bricking and replacing my droid x.

It's all good man..I don't think anyone expects anyone to risk bricking their phone if they can't replace it.
Even if you did brick it, just take it back to Big Red. They will replace it without question within 30 days and just call it DOA. More than half of the people at the stores don't care.... Trust me on this one.

Efuse will not brick your phone
Motorola says eFuse will not brick your phone, if an alternate unsighed bootloader is loaded, the phone will reboot into recovery until a signed bootloader is loaded.

I plan on picking up the x this weekend...and more than likely sending it back in 30 days either way. I also have insurance that covers just about anything, so i'm not too worried about them turning me away. Feel free to shoot me a PM or i'll follow this thread if anyone wants to test it out!
Good luck dev's!
Well since installing a custom rom will only send you back to recovery, why not root (when possible of course) and install a custom recovery? Might help get past some of the issue...idk just trying to help.
My phone will be here monday, and we better have custom roms by then or else lol
Meh, you guys realize how many phones Milestone users bricked trying to hack it right? It's not so much there's a self destruct thing as there is that the modding you do could potentially screw up the phone because you ARE messing with a bootloader and trying to get it to sign properly...
It's a tricky thing. As a Milestone user watching this board I have to say.... welcome to our world. It's one thing to say that the DROID and Incredible got hacked and what not, but this is something Milestone fans have been struggling with for like 9 months or so. It's not easy and we still haven't killed it yet. Don't come on here with too much faith as this is pretty much the same encryption scheme. I welcome the help, and perhaps one of you guys will figure it out as it is now a joint battle... but don't be surprised if it doesn't work out because none of us are holding that much hope.
The kexec vulnerability has the best chance and it's not by cracking the bootloader.
What is he kexec vulnerability? And also do you think there would any way we can bruteforce the encryption by doing some sort of a [email protected] type of ordeal?

Why cant someone get the original rom just like the Droid? That way it makes it impossible to brick.
I will offer up mine to testing. If in 30 days I will tell them it just died. After that I will spend the insurance and tell them I dropped in a pool I was surveying.
I as well would risk the recovery menu for testing. its worth it

Bootloader progress

Was wondering if there was any news or updates regarding the bootloader. Im thankful for all we have so far, plus im a donator to some projects so I help with what I can. Anyone heard anything or have any good references to follow? And whats up with people going to incredibles over x's? I hope no one is giving up on development for the x.

It almost makes me wish I wouldve kept my Incredible now that they have custom Roms running but the X is much more fitting and better for me. I felt the same way about the Incredible when I had it, didnt think Root was gonna make it and wasnt sure how long it would take to get custom Roms. I jumped ship because of that and a lil bit in part to bad battery life and soon after they got Root and now have custom Roms running. We just have to be patient as we have and hope that it soon comes. I agree with you and am thankful for what we have and we can play in the sandbox just not with all the toys.
Anyone know if the Unrevoked Team has gotten their hands on a DX yet? If not it might be time for another DX donation thread to give this Team a crack at the bootloader.
According to a post at the android forums, birdman is working on something that has to do with the mbm. It think it was Lexusbrian that gave a little tidbit that birdman might have some news for us in a couple of days from now. So be patient becuase it is being worked on.
Sweet. Well lets hold strong dx'ers, give support and donations, eventually well smash this efuse.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Considering how FAST we got root compared to the Dinc and how the whole "efuse" panic basically provoked folks into wanting a DX just to prove the bootloader can be hijacked, I think we'll have something soon.
Birdman has been shooting out some occasional tweets that suggest that he's working on it, as well as on FlyX. I expect we'll have a significant breakthrough soon (a few weeks, in my estimation.... I'm being conservative here... it could be faster), if not a working bootloader hijacking process.

Apparently the documents and code to do this are out there now. All that needs to be done at this point, is for someone to put it into an Update.zip format.
Apparently it involves some kind of exploit with NVRAND while Flashing a new baseband. I'd say within 2 weeks, our phones will be open.

I've been running this since he released it this morning. very snappy and I havent had any issues pop up.
In case you do have issues, just have the restore process ready to go, I doubt you'll need to worry about booting your DX.
I'm going to try Jewremy's MOD later and see if it works with this (since its 5.6.890 based). I'll report back on how that goes.

the post directly below the screen shot on their facebook says htc one jtag and communicating. That's not hacking.
If I remember right, I used them to repair a bricked HD2. It required being taken apart and the ROM flashed directly to the board. I think that was 40 bucks.
When I got it back the volume down stopped working. They claimed it was messed up when I sent it, which is partly true but it still functioned. When I got it back it didn't at all. They stopped responding to my questions and requests.
They got it working again but were a bit rude.. won't be using them again.

Ok, i see charging someone to take a bricked phone and directly re-flashing it. One would think it would be a better business move for them to share what they did, that way it could possibly cause more bricked device so they could possibly make more money on unbricking. LOL

I don't understand why people are so heated about this, they're independent people who get to make their own choices. Android and open source in general have great traditions of devs doing their work for free, but that hardly means that every dev owes it to the community to work pro bono.
If you haven't donated to a dev on your own, you really shouldn't be offended about this.

If you want to understand why people are mad, you need to understand the culture a little better. Go read the GPL (and maybe other related open source licences). I'm not saying that it applies to this; just that open source is no where near as open as most people believe it to be.

Not necessarily, you don't make money if people aren't willing to pay. I can only assume that most people on forums like this are less likely to send there phone out to be s-offed,and just wait until one of these amazing devs posts a tutorial(once accomplished). If you mean they would make more money if they don't, by they are hoping people will brick there devices trying, then yes i agree then they would make a lot of money off of that. I do believe Share is Caring...unless its a completely original idea then charge.

don't count on it... when there is drama between users and mods the ban hammers come out quick and fast. links get popped quick.
It is really too bad, but this seems to be entirely self-inflicted and we are left high and dry until another Dev steps up.

I'm running 5.5 and it is fine with 1 or 2 minor issues and 5.6 was a consideration... However, I'm not certain that the dev will be working on this soon, he seems to have been trying to play a donation game.
Likely it was a momentary lapse in judgment, but not something that would be tolerated on XDA and rightly so.
Hopefully another dev can step up and produce as good a product as this, but it seems that KnoxRaid is over. Oh well... I just got a Galaxy Gear and I can play with that for a while.

It's unfortunate because he certainly seemed like a talented and dedicated dev. Brought a lot of goodness to our Note 3. I also started becoming skeptical of his requests for donations and think he just got caught up in how easy it was for him to raise spare cash, sell a phone and get another. Once he got the M8, I think his attentions turned to that phone and he figured he'd ride the Note 3 wave as long as he could. I don't doubt that he probably would have continued dev'ing for our phone had he been sent a free Note 3...but I'm sure in time "something" would have happened to that phone as well. As I said though, very unfortunate for all of us Note 3 owners as he truly did devote a lot of his time to our phones. He's young and has a lot to learn still...hopefully this is a lesson in honesty and humility that he takes to heart.
