So with the (likely) availability of this at 0600 GMT tomorrow, what are you going to do with it when yours arrives?

Interesting, but the poor quality of the datasheet greatly limits its uselessness. Also the main CPU is pretty weak.
A BeagleBone ($90) can do far more, and a PandaBoard ($180) is as powerful as a GNex. Both have far better documentation for the hardware on the board.

Need to dl moar ram for that

I've been following the Raspberry Pi for a while now, thinking of getting one and using it for a media sever or seedbox. Cheap, affordable, made for something simple, yep looks like it'll be fun

The only problem is the demand brought down both web sites that are selling the thing, and the available stock sold out in in a matter of hours. The sites are now back to normal but lead time is out to the end of April!
At least as they are being distributed through RS and Farnell, so they can now source a manufacturer capable of bashing together the required number of units fast enough. When they do turn up, they have got the infrastructure to get them out there, to those eager to gets their hands on one.
Anybody remember the delays trying to get your hands on the original Sinclair ZX80? Showing my age here, I'm afraid.
It looks like a very interesting piece of work, more a solution looking for a problem. I will try to get my hands on one when the all the hoo hah dies down a bit.
Time to roll your sleeves up and brush up your Linux skills. Get a GNU ARM C compiler running on it and let the fun begin.
How will you eat yours?

From the FAQ:
Will it run Android?
If someone in the community can port a version of Android to work with 256MB of RAM, then it’ll run on the Raspberry Pi.
Click to collapse
So there's your answer: limited by 256 MB of ram. You would probably see similar performance to that of the samsung intercept . It has only 256 MB RAM on it. it even runs android 2.2!! http://www.virginmobileusa.com/cell-phones/samsung-intercept-phone.jsp
So, if anyone is willing to port android 2.2 yes, it can run android. Not very fast, but possible. Also, it will be able to run a chinese hacked version of flash that is made to run on armv6

my Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 has an ARMv6 too with 600mhz and only 168 MB RAM and i runs Gingerbread good so this little thing should do this to but i am not very familiar with this hardware so forgive mistakes ;-)

The R.Pi has same amount of ram as a Motorola backflip and its CPU is 200mhz faster then a moto backflip. I gave my lil sister my old moto backflip running cm7 2.3, so its possible to get gingerbread on the R.Pi Get that on it and I'm sold

Some opinions?

What are your opinions on a laptop/computer? It won't be long before I'm looking into getting one. I definitely want something pretty powerful that can handle things like extensive video editing and HD capability. I will be using it for school as well so probably a laptop. I think a MacBook pro would be nice but I'm really REALLY anti-apple. I think its a nice computer but I don't like the cliche thing. I always just see people walking around with iPhones and I know how much better my android device is and just laugh in my head at how ignorant these people are but how about a MacBook pro? Or any other suggestions? I don't know a whole lot about computers so anything is appreciated, thanks.

Don't go for Alienware unless it is the 11" one. The others are REALLY huge and heavy. They are meant for desktop replacements instead. Settle on a budget first, because laptops are highly commoditized.

I'm really leaning to the MacBook and am looking to probably just make a partition for windows 7 ultimate in case, so that way I have the best of both worlds. I mean the hardware is really nice on the Mac and I hear apple customer service is great. I am torn between the dual core and the quad core though and I'd like to hear what you all think. Nokia N900

Im looking for a new phone (again), and im tired of buying phones for their os, (its costing me money), so ive been looking for that "godly" phone that can do them all. so far ive been looking on youtube and google and seen it run gingerbread, windows XP and heard it will soon run windowsphone7 (i wasnt that curious about apple os), but i know that it wont run them smoothly, and it cost about 300 on eBay. so is it worth the price (and i heard meamo isnt "user friendly"), and is there a phone that can run all os's?
Sent from my Droid using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
I have one, it's mad slow compare to my android, because maemo is not updating anymore. I also had it run on android, but the development also seems to stopped. I haven't tried meego tho. I still have the phone, 32gb is pretty fun as a mp3 player with wifi and browser with flash.
how did it run android because with hardware capable of running winxp im thinking itll run it like it was made for it, also its has a resistive touchscreen, so does that mean it isnt capable of multitouch?

Yes it doesn't have multitouch. Also resistive screens need more strong tapping to work compared to capacitive that you have to barely touch them. It's not an everyday use phone and not user friendly at all
I still have and love a N900. I found it easy to use with a great UI and the resistive screen an advantage, not a negative. Most of all it gave me a real Linux distro in my pocket with true multitasking that blows away Android.
I gave up using it for daily use only because of:
1. The lack of future support from Nokia for Maemo/MeeGo due to Nokia being paid by Microsoft to switch to WP7.
2. Not wanting to be locked into 1 manufacturer ala Apple/iPhone. That was my biggest concern when I bought a N900 but it was just irresistable and I pulled the trigger anyway.
3. Certain apps I use a lot have equal or better versions for Android than Maemo/MeeGo.
If MeeGo ever gains real traction and is supported by multiple manufacturers with real MeeGo devices, I'll drop Android like a bad habit.
From HTC G2 with xda premium.
Yes good phone
Guys, the N900 it's not for all. If you don't want to mess up with linux go buy an android phone.
for the price, not being capable of multitouch, and meamo being left, i dont think its worth it, but is there a way for it to support multitouch with its resistive touch screen, like how the xperia 10 didnt support multitouch but then there was a hack on xda to make it.

You're absolutely right! But the "big boys" will never let linux to spread on smartphones like they did on all sorts of other embedded systems. For them is just a cancer. Think of N900 as the first and I really hope not last of how a true "smart" phone should be.

I got one of the 1st G1s. Then I got one of the 1st N900s. Now I'm back to Android for daily use but not happy about it. Android and the apps have come a long way since the original G1 but still leaves me wanting. I'm hoping for a MeeGo miracle, but I'm afraid at this point it'll take a miracle for MeeGo to make a dent in the market.
P.S. The debate wasn't that long ago - I got the N900 in late '09. And it's actually still going on.

The N900 is still a lot of fun to play with and still reasonably speedy compared to more recent phones if overclocked. A real Linux distro in your pocket. Nothing else quite like it. Well, there's the new N9 but that's a lot more $$ than a used N900 and no hardware keyboard.
Be sure to check out maemo.org and the talk.maemo.org forums, which are still very active.

I've seen gingerbread run on lower spec'd armv6 phones, even cm9, though it's a stretch. I don't see why it wouldn't run on an rpi.
I just got mine a couple days ago and I fully intend to port android to it. If there are a few interested people, which there seem to be, we should get a forum specifically for rpi/android development (Though I have no idea how I'd go about that).
The Raspi is very tight on ram and processor power. So I'm not so sure if Android is a good choice for it, especially if you want some media center kind of application.
I think compiling the code natively is the better choice. There seems to be some development with XBMC going on - I think that will work out better.
Well - I'll see it tomorrow, because then I'll get mine
I would think at the very least 2.1 should be doable, but I would only install it to play around to be honest. I will probably run raspbmc on mine when I get it (also tomorrow ); I would however, really like to have android on it just so I can have access to hulu plus/netflix content easily.

Doubtful was the wrong word, sorry. Pointless would have been more appropriate. Yes it can but with the limits of the Pi why would you. Wait for the native XBMC port to happen if you want any sort of fun with it.

Well, i own a X10 Mini Pro that has an ARM v6 CPU and 256MB of RAM. Guess what: it's running CM9 fluently...
Just got my Raspberry Pi.
I too don't why why it wouldn't run android well, my ZTE Blade with 600mhz armv6 processor runs ICS faster than gingerbread ran on it... at the moment of writing it's even more fluid in the menus/notification drop down than my HTC Sensation...
I lack the skills to do anything about it myself but I'd be happy to test/ report bugs if someone starts a port!

When you upload the video, go to the edit menu. You should find it. And if the video is not showing, usually you have to wait a few minutes to a few hours until the video is viewable.
I may be wrong - But I think people actually make those in their editing programs. You're talking about how at the end of a video, people have like a clip of their past video and a clip of the one next? and you can click on them?

I personally use Sony Vegas Pro. But you can use any program that allows you to take two clips and put them in one scene. Depends on your experience.
If you're on apple you can use Final Cut.
Pretty much any decent video editor has the capabilities to do it, you just need to make it manually as far as I know. Google "How to make a video with multiple clips" and you'll get what you're looking for. Save it, export it, and re-import it to your main video, having it transition to it at the end.
Best for hd editing??
I've been using powerdirector...tried pinnacle and vegas but i heard adobe premier is the best.

Industry Standard = AVID.
I am using Sony Vegas HD, and I really enjoy it - it works pretty well. Straight forward and you even have an option to upload directly to youtube. I feel it's more of a better-than-usual prosumer piece of software, but it's still good.
You will still need a decent computer, with a good GPU and RAM, decent CPU...
It's going to eat up resources, so you'll have to take that into account especially if you're editing HD footage.

Again, for it's price, it's still a killer tablet. It's way better(imo) than ipad.

I would suggest you wait until the new Nexus 7 is released later this month, or wait till the current Nexus 7 drops in price.

I would buy it now, and I'd still buy it 6 months from now.
Unless the second gen N7 really appears in the meantime.
Don't buy it, the 7's a pile of ****. Wait for the new one or buy an iPad mini for smooth games, excellent sound quality, and no lags!. Things you will not get from the 7. For me, because of app quality, it's iOS for Tab's, android for phones!.

No i still love android and my nexus 4 and iOS is horribly closed(iOS7's a bit better though)without jailbreaking. It's just I thought my nexus 7 would be like a big nexus 4 but because of tegra(**** sound, laggy UI and games) and ASUS (poor screen calibration) it wasn't. But I was suprised by how superior iOS tablet apps were compared to android and how much more screen you saw while browsing(with the 4.3 screen ratio @7.9inch's it's %35)and despite older processing architecture it runs the most graphically intensive games smoothly!(Because iOS code is well written and android code is not). After swapping the 7 for the mini I realized Android apps don't cut it on tabs at the moment. Way to much **** in the playstore and the few tablet apps they got just cannot compete with iOS versions(particularly music creation apps).

Learn how to optimize your tab. And since you already tossed it cause it "lagged" and got an ipad.....maybe go hang out in their forum....all you're doing here is showing how lazy and tech un-savvy you are, since you couldn't follow a few simple steps and use a tiny bit of effort to streamline your N7.
You'll be crying that your N4 is junk too in a year......not just older then and bogged down with crap.....you'll be saying its just garbage. Lol
BTW....anyone that claims lag in 4.2.2 is unstoppable .....I'll tell you a secret....you can always flash an earlier android version if you've given up on 4.2.2.
Have a nice day slugger!

So you got rid of your nexus 7, got an iPad mini, and now you're hanging out here bashing the Nexus 7 and trying to convince others to buy iPads... Wtf?

Plus he's missing the point of owning any android....to most of us anyway....and that's the fact that we can mess with them any way we want to.
Apple anything's are smooth and stable, sure....but you can't do Jack to them....you buy it, use it the way apple intended it to be used without deviation ....and that's about it. LOL. Awesome if your 6 or 80 or anyone else that just wants something to work and never wants to change anything about it. Wait...you can change ringtones and wallpaper still, right??

Now it makes sense.

It's funny how if anyone dares criticise a nexus product there assumed to be a computer illiterate OAP by a million vexed android nerds! LMFAO!!. Anyone who buys a nexus device knows how to flash ROMs and run scripts. How old is the average user on xda?. I'm starting to think its very young indeed, or the people hear are thick! Having owned this 8GB tablet for many months obviously I was used clearing storage regularly and thoroughly, OK :good:.

After modifying sound as much as possible, overclocking the thing to 1.6 and using an app to adjust the colour and downdating to 4.2.1, clearing storage with many apps(sd maid and the rest)on a daily basis. People are proving how "tech un-savvy" they are in your mind only. Your an idiot.

First..... here* ... hear means hearing with your ears.
Second..... give it up friend. Of your whopping 19 posts, most are just to bash the N7, not criticize, bash. Try to post something useful and gain the respect of your peers.
Third..... anyone who buys an N7 roots and flashes? LOL. You do realize the majority of any device owners know nothing of such things, nor do they frequent websites like this. I bet most owners don't know what rooting even means.
Forth..... you obviously know nothing about rooting, roms and scripts yourself ...or your N7 would NOT lag. Like mine and so many others. Vroom vroom!
Have fun with your ipad....as much as one can with a closed sourced o/s anyway. I hear they are asking for you in the ipad forums. Buh bye!
Oh....see you in the N4 forums in a few months when you nerdrage about it being crap too cause it suddenly lags.

I'm not going to give a response to the first part because that was stupid and doesn't have anything to do with this discussion. Downgrading to 4.2.1 won't do anything. For results (according to some) you'll need to drop down to 4.1.2. Also, I think generally you need at least 3gb storage free to have a smooth experience (something to do with the crappy io chip in the 7. I haven't read up on it too much).

Idiot? Very mature. LOL
Good luck on xda, with your attitude help will be hard to find.
And now ill report you for that comment cause people like you aren't needed on these forums.
Then I'll put you on ignore. Then I won't have to run across your negative and narrow minded rediculous posts.
Bye! Enjoy your super awesome ipad!
