All you need to do is make sure the file is mp3 or wma less than 1mb and 40 seconds long. right click the file you want to transfer go to proerties then click details go to genre and type Ringtone click ok then transfer to your phone via zune and it will be in your ringtones under custom.
Seems a lot to do but it is easy good luck and give it a try.

Zune was being really picky about what it would add for me. I had a mp3, Titled GalvanizeRing set to 38sec and it wouldnt add it until I changed the name, seemed to be clashing with Galvanize (chemical brothers song). It would say it synced it, but it would not show up in custom. Anyway once I renamed it it synced and showed up.

You can used zune to sync songs you like, but you need edited it before sync to you windows phone, open the zune, choese the collection--music,find out the song you want it used as a ringtone, right click, choese edit, at the gener, input ringtone, ok, then sync to you windows phone, good luck to you!

I used Zune to transfer some MP3s as ringtones and they worked a treat. I also used Touch Xplorer to change a synced filename to Alert-xx and copy to windows directory so I could have some custom alert tones.

They learned something thank you

mp3 Files as Ringtone

Is it possilbe to use MP3 Files as Ringtones for the Qtek9090/MDAIII? And if it is possible, please let me know how
Thx Rex
No but you can use WMA which are better anyway. Just download the WMA covertor free from MS windows Media Player down load page to convert them
Yes you can, Its old news
Yes it is possible, as long as your using a version with windows media player 10. You need to copy whatever mp3s you want to use to the \windows\rings folder. Alternatively if your using an updated version of Photo Contacts then you can leave the mp3s where they are an assign users specific mp3 ringtones
Yes you can just put this file in your PDA and instal it.

Thanks! Works with my XDA IIs!
If you install NetFront3, you have mp3 tones in call.
got win med 10, installed the cab, copied the mp3s to the rings forlder and although I can see them, I don't hear them. weird
sam-man - I installed that, and did a soft reset. I get mp3 files listed now, but when I attempt to play 'em, I just get "beep" every 4 seconds or so. Any tips?
dude just get yourself a free Windows Media Encoder from MS. It takes seconds to convert them and if you pick the PPC profile it will make them nice and lound as well.
thks mate, seacrhing for it for quite long time.

Thanks for that
Tks that link for the mp3 converter works like a charm!
pleasure is all mine

set as ringtone my wav. file.

where can i download a app, that set the wav. file as a ringtone or messages alert?? can you give me some links. thanks in advance..
are you dislike mp3 ? )
Use ur laptop to send the .wav file to ur X1 through bluetooth. And then u can see the wav file in the ringtone list
making the wav into mp3 would dec it's size by a factor 11 though
The best software to encode between mp3 and .wav is free CDEx.
I use it all the time in profi usage.
With 320kbps mp3 you get perfect quality without any loss for a ringtone.
well for ring tones I would advise mono and a pretty low Kb/sec as the speaker in most devices don't really do high quality audio much justice
Put it in either the My Documents folder on your device or in Storage Card\My Documents and it'll show up in the ringtone list.
Works for mp3, wma, wav, mid etc

[Q] Audiobooks...

Is there anyway to prevent my audiobook files from being indexed with the rest of the MP3s?
when ever I have music playing a chapter or two will pop up in the middle of the shuffle.
thanks
I'm curious, too, but for a different reason. I have a game (Need For Speed) whose background music files show up in the Music Player lists. Most are really obnoxious rap or hip-hop tunes I would never listen to, but when using the player on random they pop up. I'd like to exclude that folder from being seen by the Music Player app so I never have to see or hear them except when I'm playing the game.
You could put them all in their own folder and put a blank file called ".nomedia" (without quotes) in that same folder. That stops them from showing up in the default music player, but I don't know about 3rd party players.

That might work for the OP, but in my case the files need to be in whatever folder the game is looking for or they won't work in the game.
I create a AudioBook folder and placed the .nomedia in there, it works great to keep them out of the media player. The problem is that all the other media players on the market (that I found for free), use the same "collection" of music as the stock player does, so they also did not see the audiobooks.
I found TinyPlayer (free in the market) satisfies my needs really well. The only thing it doesn't do is bookmark. So I have to remember my place if I ever reboot. It uses a folder tree to read your collection, so it ignores the .nomedia and sees my audiobooks. It does not read song tags like the music player does, but that never bothered me. I just arrange each book into a folder, then the player will automatically go to the next music file, and stop at the end of the folder.
Awesome! Ill give it a try. Thanks for the quick responses.

Just put the .nomedia file in the folder where the game's music is. It should work in root folder of the game. The stock player does not look in any subfolders if there is a .nomedia in a folder.

OK, that's what I thought, but wasn't sure if the file content/type mattered. I guess you just drop the .txt when you rename it.
UPDATE: That did the trick, but I first had to open the file in Astro and rename it without the .txt extension. The stock file manager wouldn't let me do it. Thanks again!

It looks like several others have already helped, but if you wanted yet another option, I've used MortPlayer (there's both a Music and an Audio Book player). It's free on the market, has a widget, and also uses the folder structure so you can sort things that way (I haven't used Tinyplayer, but it sounds similar.)
+ 1 for mortplayer. Great for audio books.

[HOW TO] Custom Ringtones and Notifications

Just a heads up for anyone else new to WP7. You can add custom ringtones to your HD2 WP7 using Chevron Custom Ringtone Manager.
Your phone has to be Chevron unlocked for this to work. Also, your mp3s need to be converted to WMA 48KHz format. This can be done easily with Microsoft Expression Encoder 4.
I've shown here how to convert using this tool:
Once converted, you'll find the WMA file in C:\Users\xxx\Documents\Expression\Expression Encoder\Output. Now run the Chevron Ringtone manager, browse to your WMA file, and click Build Ringtone XAP.
Then install the XAP the same way as you do with any other. I recommend Tom XAP Installer.
For alarms and alerts, there's an two extra steps involved. You must rename your WMA file to Alert-01.WMA (or which ever one you want to replace). Note your original one will be overwritten.
Once you have copied it to your phone, you need to install TouchExplorer. use this to move your Alert-01.WMA file from My Documents/My Ringtones into /Windows.
------------------------------------------------
An alternative is to sync your music with Zune, and then use TouchExplorer to copy one of your MP3s from My Documents/Zune/Content/xxx folder and put it into your My Ringtones folder. This works too
I've tested both methods and they both work great.
If you have any problems with it, just ask and I'll try to help.
Its also possible to copy mp3 files to My ringtones folder, I checked it by copying a random mp3 file from zune folder =)
I wonder if you can add extra alert or alarm files by just using higher numbers instead replacing the files? Didnt try this yet because it takes ages to load the windows folder...
Why the hell did MS use the folder to store all the files without any sub folders =S
Does the mp3 work as a ringtone? I didn't think this worked.
yep using it without a problem =)

It's tricky if you dont know where to look.
Using Touch Epxplorer, browse to My Documents > Zune > Content > 0100
The files will have different filenames. Just find the one you want as a ringtone by playing it (double tapping it). THen rename it and copy it to the My Ringtones folder

That is the problem, all the files is numbered with no original names.
Is there a way to go around this ?

Unfortunately not...that's just the way that Zune transfers files when you sync...it does this with all files.

I had this problem too.
You can just delete the ringtone from the ringtone folder using Touchxplorer. (My Documents\My Ringtones)
When using Microsoft Expression Encoder 4, do not select WMA Professional. I did this in error and although the ringtones sounded good on the computer, the phone played them horribly.
Select WMA, then 48kHz.
If you select WMA and 48kHz is not an option, convert to WMA Professional at 48kHz, then import the new file and convert to WMA at 48kHz. Worked like a charm for me!
YES YOU CAN USE MP3 FILES AS RINGTONES BUT IF YOU WANT TO ADD ALERTS OR ALARMS YOU HAVE TO CONVERT THESE TO WMA FILES & RENAME THEM TO Alert-01 or alarm-01 in windows folder.

There's no need for the CAPS. And I also already explained this in the first post.
Anyone know where alerts are found (ie SMS/email alerts) would be good to change these too, I assume it would work using the same method (TouchXplorer)
I did the alternative method of syncing with ZUNE and did exactly what was said on the post and i was able to do it BUT when i set it for my ringtone it does not want to play.? I tried several songs from ZUNE(All i can listen to) and have the same problem. I can hear them before i do the method but after that there is no sound when i select it for my ringtone. I do have everything installed as the post says. Is there anything I'm doing wrong?? Any help please!!!

[Q] Ringtones on phone memory.

Hi everyone! this is my first post! I hope you can help me
I look in others threads and didn't find it.
What I want to do, is save my own ringtones on the telephone memory to able to pick any of those ringtones from the default list.
My phone is already rooted and I use the Root Explorer.
I know that the default ringtones and notification sounds are in
/system/media/audio (/ringtones or /notifications)
the music in the file are in ogg, so I convert my ringtones from mp3 to ogg
I fill all the information of the ringtone (artist - title - etc)
and put the file there. Then I noticed the permissions of the rest of the ringtones, so I changed too. And beside of that, it still not working.
I know that if I create a file with the name ringtones or notification in the sdcard I can see those ringtones from the default list, but that is not what I want. I want to be able to choose ringtones from the phone memory. It's doesn't matter if is not on the default list.
if any of you know how to do that, please help me
Thanks for the read!
and bye!
You can choose your ringtone through the music application.
I don't know about notifications..( I choose it through GO SMS app)

You don't have to convert the file type from mp3 to ogg,, u just have to put that mp3 file in /system/media/audio/notification or ringtones. (remember to mount system permission as r/w).
After that, reboot your device and change ringtone through setting menu,,

ok.. I did the same thing.. used root explorer to copy the ringtone to the phone memory.
saved it in system/media/audio/ringtone
but my music player didn't show it..
so I deleted an existing ringtone "breeze.ogg" and renamed my file as the same . now the sound picker shows breeze but it plays the ringtone I made...!
