[Q] Exchange Email Sync!!! - Motorola Droid Bionic

Just got the Bionic. I have the Thunderbolt in my had the past few months and was excited about giving the Bionic a try. Went to set up my Corp Exchange ...worked fine ...went to set sync all dates ...and WTF!!! 30 days .. what a joke. Anyone know a work around to sync all dates. Not in high school! Otherwise the phone goes back.

Doesn't seem to be, I don't see why it's a big deal...you can continue searches on the server if you need to find something. It just doesn't actively sync more than 30 days to conserve power when connecting to pull data.

Case in point ..I've been working on a divestiture deal since Feb 11. I have around 300 emails that should show up in my in box from various companies, as is my desk top. When I'm on the speaker phone browsing my inbox, why should I have to search a "smart phone" to see our email communications. Blackberry and Iphones have no problems. Some should find the number "30" days and change it to "999". Then I would keep phone and root
Btw, search server did work ..thanks for the tip ..someone please figure out where to change that 30 to 999!

Just a suggestion (not a solution), but purchase Touchdown for Android. It is well worth the $$ if you require a very robust Exchange experience. When I bought the Droid X (when it first came out), I purchased Touchdown and have not looked back... so many features, filters, searches, and other options!

Um... fix this for me now or I'm sending the phone back?
Android is a self-service station my friend. It may take a bit more effort, but you'll get that evergreen glow of accomplishment.

I have to agree with the OP. The limitation is a bit too "big brotherish" for my tastes, and it assumes way too much. For example, does it occur to Motorola that some people sit on planes for 4-6 hours at a time, and might find that answering email messages (even old ones) is a great way to utilize that time?
If they're using battery savings as the rationale behind this, there are likely many other things (like their bloatware...or BLUR) that they can tweak to provide savings that do not make ridiculous assumptions.
Yes, there are other Exchange solutions available. But if one buys a handset with the knowledge that there is a solution, having to spend more on software is silly.
Joel

I agree ..thank you. Is there anyone who can write a script to change the number 30 to 500 or 700, assuming I root the phone. I would donate if so. Phones I have that SYN ALL! : Droid Charge, HTC Thunderbolt, Samsung Gallaxy s2, Iphone, Infuse, EVO 3D GSM and I'm sure the list goes on. The DroidX2 does the same as the Bionic. Any programers willing to jump on this?

To be honest, if you want a phone that excels doing Exchange email/calendar items, go with a RIM phone. If you want a phone that has an extra long batter life, go with the iPhone. If you want a phone that is very customizable, a king of nothing, but prince of many things, then go with an Android.
I purchased Touchdown over 2 years ago when I switched from a Blackberry to an Android to help ease my way. I have seen a return on my investment as my phone now outperforms my co-worker's Windows and Blackberry phones when it comes to corporate email.
Would it be nice for an Android to have a good Exchange software? Yes. I have NEVER bought a phone expecting it though.

Use Enhanced Email. Fast light and full if options for exchange (including removing pin mandate). Multiple email account support

I would consider getting a software app to do a ONE TIME sync from outlook to Android (that will get all your old email yadda yadda)
Here is one thought from Google

http://www.fjsoft.at/en/ has gotten good reviews
and finally a good recommended PAID app

I use enhanced email from the market I works flawlessly for me. It's the best app I have bought to this date. I used it on my OG Incredible and now the the BIONIC!

This is a change in Motoblur. Three original Droid X allowed "all", and it appears Motorola our Verizon forced the change to just 30

Yet another "MotorBLAH" feature... (sigh)
I hope Google can fix Motorola Androids... they are a great phone (physicially), but their Blur UI leaves a ton to be desired compared to others.

[Q] I need honest answer PLEASE

Is this phone and company worth switching over too ? Do to Sprints changing my plan without my approval,I have the opportunity to switch to another carrier.Out of the other big 3 Verizon,T-mobile & AT&T is the only one that is willing to put their offer in writting to me. The other reason I am even looking at this phone and company is because both of my sons want the IPhone and my wife only wants a phone offered by them as well..
So..please fellow XDA members tell me staright up..should I stay with Sprint and my Hero for 1-1/2 years more..or start fresh with this phone and AT&T..
Mac
50 views and not even 1 response..?
Is there no one on-line that has this phone wanting to step up and answer the question ?
I really would like to know the feelings of the folks here, since those that have this phone also have AT&T's service..
Mac
Not an easy one to answer really. I would say if you are completely turned of by what Sprint did to you then changing wouldn't be a bad thing. Going with AT&T will get you points with your family. And who couldn't use more points with their family, right?
That being said, you have by now undoubtedly heared about the GPS problems facing the Galaxy S phones. Some have found their phone is better with different versions, some claim all the updates and changes have made their GPS unuseable. If you are in need of a phone that has good GPS then I would say you can find better. Personally, the GPS issue isn't a deal breaker for me. I am also one of the lucky ones that find it works fine for how I use it.
The phone itself is amazing. Being on XDA also helps as there are many helpful and informative people. Also, the Captivate has been out long enough that the mods are becomming better and better every day, that is if you are into modding your phone. Heck, stock it still is a good phone.
So it all boils down to what you really want to do. I think that is why you haven't had anyone jump on giving you an answer. Good luck my friend!
There is no "right carrier". The advantage of AT&T (now) is coverage and GSM. AT&T has better coverage then T-Mobile, but about equal to VZW. GSM allows you take your phone to Europe - VZW CDMA does not;
But the future brings change - VZW has a slew of World phones coming out (they have GSM as well as CDMA) - VZW has LTE coming out - which is supposed to be a global standard - so travel issue may be a thing of the past.
AT&T has the iPhone today, but rumor says a CDMA iPhone on VZW for the holidays. But rumors are rumors.
I don't know what you are looking for in writing - all the carriers plans are on their web site. T-Mo does have the best customer service, and VZW has some great android phones. If you don't travel much, and T-Mo has good coverage where you live, they seem to have the best prices and some of the best phones.
AT&T is fine too - not trying to steer you away. I moved to AT&T for an iPhone years ago - and I travel to EU; so VZW wasn't cutting it.
Anyway If the family wants AT&T and the price for phones and service fits, then make the move. But you are stuck for 2 years.
Sounds like it's 3-1 in your house. I'd go ahead and make the switch if thats what your family wants. I don't think you'll be worse off with one carrier over the other, at the end of the day they will all screw you. Captivate is a great phone if you can deal with the sometimes difficult to deal with GPS.
I agree. Go with what makes your family happy overall. The Captivate is a fine device, and I've been much more pleased with it than I was with my iPhone. Talk it over with your family, putting them first won't do you wrong.
My first phone was from Virgin Mobile and was prepaid. I know they leased out network access from Sprint. It was awful. I never had good coverage, and then they started charging more for everything. I left them.
I've been with AT&T now since 6th grade. They've never screwed us over, they've always been helpful, and whenever we've had problems, like my sister signing up for those joke things they advertise on tv putting huge data charges on our bill, they cleared it up right away and even gave us a credit on the account.
Of course you're going to hear horror stories of bad customer service from everyone, but really it's not all that common. I've always thought AT&T had great phones, and they've all last me a long time.
My favorite phones have always been Samsung ones as all but one of my phones has been from them. My first was a Sony Ericsson S710a and it lasted me until one day I was sliding it open, and it slipped out of my hand and into a wall and the LCD shattered. After that I had a Samsung a727, then the SGH-i607 Blackjack, then the SGH-a877 Impression, and now the Captivate.
You will be happier with AT&T then with Sprint. But ultimately, you pay the bill and you decide where your money goes. I'll just add that I don't usually praise any company for no reason.
I love this phone with ji6 gps works completely fine for me it does what its supposed to every time lately gets me there no issues. Im very happy with att besides they make you pay for tethering, but theres ways around that with this phone, hehe ;-)

Thanks Guys..
I hate spending a-lot more money so soon on moving my service (since may 2010)..but I really don't know how I could stay with them.
As to any cell company posting their policy on line..well..that can and does change (with Sprint almost daily)..and actually having a written signed contract is something the other companies won't do,AT&T will. That does a lot for me..and for my wife peace of mind.My boys have wanted the I phones for sometime..I don't want one..which is why I am asking about the Captivate. BTW...Sprint elected to change my verbal contract given to me at the time of signing..and I fought it the best I could without turning my Lawyers loose..and I most likely would have won,but the cost to do so would have been prohibitive without a written contract,or so what they told me when I spoke to them about it..
So..the phone has a GPS problem..and that isn't a deal breaker for me,but I do want to see it fixed and soon.Having a 2.2 rom is what I am running on my hero now along with one of the best looking themes going right now IMHO..http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=797077 and so hopefully we can get this ported over here at some point..even if I have to learn how to do it myself
FWIW..I looked closely at this phone and also the Ios4 and hands down this one blows it out of the water on anything video..I stopped by T-Mobile and watched the HD Avatar movie on their version when I was looking at what they offered...It was just awesome..simply jaw dropping..
I am looking forward to the 2.2 upgrade and what comes after with it..So..I will be on here more and more reading what I can..
Thanks Again
Mac
Mac, just a heads up. The leaked 2.2 rom we have actually fixed the GPS. There's no real problem anymore. Obviously it will become more refined when the final release comes out but it definitely works now.

stuffy is a difficult company but I can't feral with poor service so I disk with them. get used to advanced features like tethering being blocked and such. but you can fix that by looking in the dev section. att isn't all bad though mostly because they are stupid, I told them verizon had a 15% vetrans discount (they do) and asked att if they had something similar. well they didn't but the customer service rep put me on an active duty discount because she didn't know better. it needs to be approved at a higher level with pics of my id and a valid military email according to there website, well I put the papers in anyway and had 15% off my bill the next month. so they obviously don't look at it.
verizons version of bloatware is full blown add ware. if you plug an incredible into a windows pc it hijacks explorer and goes to a v cast music site. on the fascinate they replaced the google services with microsoft services.

I think it's refreshing to see all the honest answers, not a ton of chest pounding "our phone is the best" posts. Most people on XDA by nature are into tweaking so the out-of-the-box limitations aren't a showstopper.
For me, I really need a world-capable phone. My family also is on ATT so that helped as well. I think all the carriers are converging on offering similar product. ATT has less HTC stuff but has the IPhone. ATT is currently behind on Android, but the Captivate is certainly helping to address that. I like the phone and have recommended it friends. Go for it.

I will give my two bits. My experience has been good with att. Cs has never been bad, but at times there were moments that did not go smoothly. Always quick to address concerns of mine and they love giving credits out to keep me happy. I have been one of the lucky that never had major problems out of the box with the captivate. But coming from a storm running on atti think my standard were lower. Gps on froyo still doesn't work perfectly but has had improvement with locking and tracking. Dev support is actually really good so that is a big plus. My wife loves her captivate and she is not a techie at all. Hope my input helps.

It does,and greatly appreciated..
I understand the gps issue, and I am wondering if the delayed release of FroYo on this phone is partly because of it. Rooting and adding on customs roms has been working great for me on my Hero..and that phone is finnally acting the way it should have all along. Removing AT&T's bloatware will be my first priority after 2.2 is released..
I am curious about one thing..I know you can't load 3rd party apps unless rooted and a custom rom..but can you direct push them with the sd out of the phone and in a reader from a pc ? If we are working out of windows and a terminal..we should be able to insert any .apk or what we want.. anywhere we want..can't we ?
Thanks Again Guys

You can push them using ADB or even easier, if you google something called the "Android Central Sideload Wonder Machine" or just sideload wonder machine, someone created an app to so that you don't even have to use the command prompt or hack the phone. No need for a custom rom, and I don't believe rooting is needed.
Here, I'll link you to it.

I made the switch you are thinking of about 1.5 years ago and I have no regrets. One thing to keep in mind is the data cap ATT now has on their new subscribers. I signed up when unlimited was an offering, and honestly I don't know that I would have been comfortable using 1 smartphone, let alone 3-4 of them with limited data usage. ATT also had better coverage where I lived last year but would say Sprint is on par within the city limits now. The Evo is a really nice phone (Several people I know have them and are pleased) but I won't go back to Sprint after all the horrible customer service I had with them for 8 years. My local ATT business rep does an incredible job and is a big reason that I just renewed with them(they let me keep unlimited data). Ultimately, if I was in your shoes, I would probably do what made my family/wife happy as long as it isn't going to cause financial heartache when you exceed the data limit. I think they charge in blocks of 200mb for overage but you should definitely look into how much data your family has/will be using. My .02
Edited to add: Depending on what kind of user you are (business/personal) you might want to leave that cog. 2.2 alone until it works. I loaded it last weekend, went out to a job, and was unable to d-load an important pdf that was in my e-mail. Fortunately I had a laptop but in the past I would have been able to count on my phone for a quick blueprint reference. Sounds like it may be a fun thing to play with as long as you don't REALLY need everything on your phone to work. Also, the GPS was horrid on cog. 2.2. Needless to say I flashed it back to the original software when I got home. My GPS works just fine after the JH7 OTA update was installed. Worked yesterday on a 2 hour drive where I only had phone coverage for 20-30 miles. I haven't "tweaked" the GPS settings, just whatever they changed with JH7 is working.

Dam good advise..Thanks
They charge in 1 gig allotments for overages now..not 200 mb. I too was worried about doing just this..and this is per line..not per plan. I went back through all of my bills and no-one has even come close to 1gig..let alone 2 gigs..but I understand that can change too.
The main thing for me and my family is getting a phone that is going to work..every time. I've run into some issues with mine on my job where I needed it and something crashed it. Also it's so tiresome for me to hear all the complaints and moaning when something crashes or FC's on their phones..I can deal with it happening on mine cause I am used to tinkering with it..but I have to say I am very tempted some by the I 4's simplicity...it would be nice just to not have to worry about updating mine almost daily, and just use the durn thing. I just don't know if I could deal with it or not as a day to day phone. I am at a loss in that regards..I know you can jailbreak them and do similar things we do with our Androids..but..I don't know enough about that to even consider doing it right now. I most likely would just so I could download apps and movies on it to watch from my pc..I got a week to figure this all out..and you all here are helping a-lot..
Thanks

I honestly liked the iphone4, and had one for a week. It was fun and all, but it had the same problem as my 3G, the ability to make and MAINTAIN a phone call. Obviously that isn't much of an issue for younger kids since you can still text with spotty coverage(my 13 yo uses about 60 min. a month and 1,000,000,000,000 text messages) I don't know if the iphone is somehow on a different signal than the other phones, but I have been very pleased with the PHONE CALL ability of the captivate. My wife loves the iphone (though she keeps eyeballing the captivate now) and like you, I do not enjoy fixing problems, so I have tried my best to keep her interest in my phone at a minimum. I can honestly say I do not miss the iphone for anything. I also enjoy the *cough cough* wireless tethering of my captivate(free app) that iphone never did get right(and when it did work, there was the whole loss of signal issue). The iphone is good at running apps and texting, outstanding even. I just really need to make phone calls and MAINTAIN a call when I make it. But like I said in my previous post, if your use is personal, iphone might work. If you make important calls, it fails.

Picked one up today. TMO USA.

Cool. So I picked up the HD7 this AM here in NYC. All my contacts, emails and calendar imported from Google with no problem. Putting some music and photos on and I downloaded the Facebook App from the Marketplace. So far so good...lets see in a couple of hours.
Picked mine up as well so far it is great. Exchange came in with mail, contacts, and calendar just fine.
me too
got mine too, i'm liking it so far.
had to tweak the outlook setup because of a university email (off site exchange server), but downloaded everything pretty fast.
Just a note. If you have a contact whos mobile number is listed as a home phone it wont show up under messaging or allow you to SMS that person. You have to change it. I didnt have to do that in Android.
Got mine today as well. LOVE IT!!!!!
I gotta say, Android does not do this processor any justice... I knew it was smooth by reading reviews but this thing blew me away from the first swipe... Even the iPhone has to work hard to keep up
I know it has limitations and I'm not gonna dismiss them as not needed like a lot of people do... All I'm saying is that im willing to grow with the platform and enjoying every minute of it
yeah.. this device is ridiculously fast..
it makes my galaxy S feel slow and I know the hardware isn't as good in this phone as it is in that one..
Yep, ordered mine today. Hopefully (since I payed for express shipping) it should be here tomorrow. Can't wait! Glad to hear all the good stuff about it as there have been many haters talking about how bland it looked and nit pick the things it doesn't have yet.
I picked mine up today as well. The only things I am missing from the Nexus One are an XDA app, an Engadget app, and Swype.
I'm sure these apps will come in time.
so i went to play with one at my t mobile store and all they had was the dummy unit! Wasn't this supposed to launch today!?

Why are you calling it a terrible launch some stores don't have the unit. you should have gone to another tmobile store to check it out and a lot of 3rd party retailers have the demo as well.
you just do not wanted to put in enough effort to research and blame the whole world for it
My t-mobile store had one on saturday that people could look at..
Looks like your store is fail..
The T-Mobile store I went to on Saturday when I went to pick up my HD7 had a live demo. I got to play with it while the rep activated my phone. They were all pretty excited about the phone too, surprisingly.
Well...phone will not sync with Zune. Sucks really. I will keep trying but it doesnt look like its going to work. I drag music to the phone icon and its says syncing on the phone...but nope..nothing is there....even if i click summary in zune and hit sync it says its doing it but its a no go. Hmm.
Drag it into your collection first.then right.click and add it to the HD7.

Spec wise the MT4G wins hands down. Faster CPU/GPU, More RAM and HSPA+. I was in a similar situation but then opted to go for the HD7 simply because I am interested in the OS. Hoping it's better than the Android and iOS. Also hoping in the next update we get flash capability or Silverlight/html 5.
I absolutely love it! Granted I've only had it 2 hours. Stuck to hand.

Why are people thanking that post? Lol.
Honestly, if it is GPS-based advertising, you more than likely consented to allow Google's location service to randomly collect data (in initial setup). It's nothing even close to "spying", and if you didn't want it, all you had to do was uncheck the box. But saying that you are leaving a phone, OS, and community over a little thing (that was meant to help anyways...), then I don't know what to tell you.
If you really think about it, would you be any better off with the competition? Apple (let's face it, the only REAL competition) really doesn't have the greatest track record when it comes to phones
Total coincidence.
If Goggle was tracking your location to advertise better to you, you would see ads on webpage and such through their web ads.
There is no way Google sold your email to the local business, and they had time to put you into their own mailing list to send you their newsletter. Google doesn't work that way.
You would have gotten the emails even if you had not gone to those places.
I think they call this Confirmation Bias. You don't notice all the emails you get when you haven't gone anywhere, or notice the fact you didn't get any emails from all the other places you've been, but your brain makes a connection between the two emails and the two places you were at.
I think it's a totally legitimate theory.
This is why I keep my Nexus wrapped up with a cute little tin foil hat, just like mine!

stolen...

Today is my saddest day, my perfectly good shape (no cracking screens..etc) Nexus 7 16GB stolen at Liberty Since Center Museum, in Jersey City, NJ.:crying:
I was at second floor sitting at table at cafeteria , and then step out for a few mins to watch out my 3 year old girl. I was worry about my daughter who was running on the floor, so I jump and run behind here, I completely forget my small backup on the chair I was sitting...when I realized it, I grabbed my little girl, and rush back to the table where I was sitting, but it was gone, couple of waiters cleaning the tables, and I asked them if they saw a small green back pack, they said yes..they brought my back bag, and when I checked, my Nexus 7 gone!!!
I told them where's my tablet to two waiters now standing next to me, they said they know nothing about my tablet, they said they saw the bag and thought it was forgetten, and took it back and put it here inside. They asked me to talk to office/info desk in the Museum, so I went there and told them what happened and I said I know I am pretty sure one of the waiters took the tablet and demanded that there must be some security camera or something. they said there's none in the cafeteria area.
We are talking about max 10-15 min here, I know it was museum closing time and it was only me sitting on the table in the cafeteria, and waiters cleaning the tables...that's the time all happened, so I am quite sure one of them took it out.
I did not have any remote security app installed...so I cannot remotely wipe my stolen N7, but I changed my gmail account password using my phone, and when I get home, change all other password I can think of (amazon, box, etc)...I also went to Google wallet and disable N7 device, I also deleted my google account credit card as well.
I am not sure what else I can do without any security apps installed, I did probably best I could at this point (chaining the password..etc). Drop me a line if you have any other ideas that I can do.
I am not sure how much this would help, but hoping they cannot get my account info or do anything about it. I am quietly regret that I did not install any security apps on my N7. I am also quite sad that I lost my beloved Nexus 7!!:crying:
so I was sad, holding my 3 year old girl, went thru steps and front door to meet my wife. When my wife saw my face, she said what happened..I said my nexus 7 stolen...she knew that I loved my N7, so she did not say anything, tried to cheer me up..but did not work...
:crying:
This is one of the reasons why it's so important to have a remote security app. The usefulness on wifi-only devices is a bit lacking, since your ability to control it remotely without having it online makes it difficult to use a lot of the functionality. But on the 3G model especially, it allows you to track/wipe/etc. it if necessary. You can also make it sound an alarm, which in your case could have tracked it to where it was if it was still in the building (ie: in the employee lockers or storage area).
I highly recommend Cerberus. It's a great app and does everything you can want. You can also install it in the ROM, so even if the thief wipes the device, you can still remotely access it and track down who stole it (unless they do a full system flash).
Contact Google and report it stolen.THey can wipe and disable the device as soon as it comes online.
This is why every Android user should install Cerberus immediately. The app is only $4 (after the first free week) and will allow you to use it on up to 5 devices (so less than $1 per device). Cerberus is amazing & has an insane amount of recovery/tracking methods, and can even survive through a wipe. Makes me sad more people don't use it...

if I only I knew....I was aware of security apps, in fact I had one lockout app installed, but after I was dealing with 4.2 upgrade, I did fresh re-install stock ROM, so forgot to install lockout app (not sure if it is really as effective as Cerberus though)...too many lessons learnt today
James-NC, thanks for the info. I called Google's Nexus support phone# 1-855-83-NEXUS (63987)., but could not able to get thru, waited on the phone over 40 mins...I will try tomorrow morning see if I get hold someone.....
I did know Google can wipe and disable the devices...

U should of accused them of taking it , you should have cause a scene big enuf to allow the cops to be called and them inform them when they arrive that one of them stole it. Or you coulda done it the old fashion way and kicked some ass .....never play nice with suspected thieves ....

if your SURE you was the only one in the area except the waiters i woulda really .....really caused more then a scene, i can see your situation thou especially since you had your child present. :good:
did you leave wifi switched on? or bluetooth?
if so go back and quickly use bluetooth to search for your device name
or use "wifikill" connect to the wifi in the area you woulda been using, wifikill will then show you all devices connected tho that wifi point, you would then see if your device is still in the area "hidden under the counter"
Don't mean to sound bad, but I purchased Cerebrus and after a few weeks of leaving it dormant (not needed most of the time?) I realised that it had started sending messages to my contacts.
How do I know it was Cerebrus? BECAUSE THE TEXTS IT WERE SENDING WAS MY LOCATION AND MAP CO-ORDINATES !!!!

But it was just doing it by itself, I even forgot I had Cerberus.
My phones networks kept turning themselves off and on, then contacts kept getting sent maps of where I was.
Un-installed Cerberus and Deleted the accounts on website, the issues stopped.
WHY? WHY DOES CERBERUS MESS MY PHONE UP !?

because user error. its an option in the program..
Shame you have changed your Google password.
Otherwise could have done a remote install of Lookout Plan B (search on market)
Then tracked the tablet yourself!

Really sorry to hear about your device, but even ten minutes is a really long time. I wouldn't leave anything of value unattended for more than 10-15 seconds.
I've had Cerebus installed on two phones and three tablets. Never had any issues with contacts randomly getting text messages of my location. I'm calling user error.

That is exactly what I was going to say. OP is going to kick himself if he did indeed have bluetooth enabled and didn't think to search for all nearby bluetooth devices from his phone.

I disagree.
If it was a random person walking by who spotted the device and took it, they would high-tale it out of the area, making any BT/Wi-Fi tracking impossible anyway. But odds are, the first thing they're going to do with it after they get to a safe location is play with it and see if they can get access to it. Sure if they were smart they might realize it is safer to turn if off and reflash it when they get home, but honestly, what are the odds of the thief being that smart?
If it was a waiter, as the OP assumes, they're going to try and hide it ASAP. It's unlikely they are going to walk out of the building, at least not too far. So that leaves a few random hiding spots around the immediate vicinity. They aren't going to take the time and inspect the device, let alone try and figure out how to turn it off. They wouldn't want to be seen by anyone with it in their possession. Odds are, they grabbed it, hid it with something they were carrying or in their apron (if applicable) and stashed it for later. And if that was the case, and if it was online (highly unlikely for the non-3G unit, then recovery would be possible.
As a prime example of stupidity regarding thieves and tablets, look at the TSA agent who was just caught stealing a planted iPad. A local news crew had incidents staged where 5-10 iPads were accidentally left by travelers in an airport. All but one were promptly returned to the "owner". But one guy, on camera, snatched it. They put a GPS tracker in it, and traced it to the agents home. For a week they waited, and they saw it go online, apps attempted to be downloaded/installed (on the owner's account) and just played with in general. Finally, the news crew arrived and questioned him about it - which he of course denied. Until that is when they set off a remote alarm siren. He made up some excuse and returned it. Fortunately, and surprisingly for the government, he lost his job.
So no, thieves are usually quite stupid.

Should I return my Pebble Time Steel?

It arrived yesterday from Amazon and I really like it but as i guess you all know today came an E-mail discontinuing support and Warranty. I have already started a return request but as the day goes on and the watch presents it's uses I am increasingly annoye at what has happened. Why? Because this was the Smart Watch I wanted. Long battery life, easy use and just works. I am concerned , however should the watch go wrong or will I see these watches going for far less in a week or two as the news sinks in. What do people think, should I return it. Looking around the Sony 3 looks the closest but nowhere near on Battery life. Any other options?
Same question ...
I'm in the same boat with Pebble 2 HR ... I really like it so far ... bought it yesterday from Best Buy have one month to return it ... don't know what to do. Will it WORK a year from now, don't care to much about warranty but will it actually have the app available !?
So my answer "I don't know!" I think I'll wait until Jan. and see if anything changes, maybe some more info, let the water clear a little.
I will never buy a FitBit that is 100% .
Other option:
Vector Watch Luna - arriving for me on Monday wife agreed to let me buy it ...
No reason the app would go away or stop working. I guess if Android "O" comes out or the new iOS and is somehow incompatible with the existing app it would break, but other than that... I still love my Pebble Rond and can't find anything out there that comes close to it as far as aesthetics and functionality.

Server switch off will quite easily cause a large amount of features to "stop working" so yes return it and get your money back while you can.

Aside from downloading new watchfaces, I couldn't name a single feature of the Pebble that would require a centralized server.

^^^^^ Yes. Unlike the Apple watch, the Pebble watch is self-contained. Most apps are local, while many make use of already established APIs (weather, PayPal, etc) that are not controlled by OEM servers.
I'm in the same shoes. I bought my time steel on cyber Monday last week. It works fine since but what if it breaks? I purchased it from amazon so I have a time window to return it but after that I will be alone. I own a pebble classic as well which broke after about 10 months of use and had a warranty replacement. The new one I had is actually working better then the old one which broke. I can easily get 7 days of battery life out of my pebble classic. My only issue is what if my new time steal breaks after 10 months? Or they just shut the servers as other people suggested. The problem is I do love my pebbles but as the future is uncertain maybe time to change to a more reliable future proof brand.
I tried to find a good alternative like Garmin Forerunner 230 which has similar features but more expensive.
I still haven't decided whether I should send it back or not. I probably get a garmin as well and will compare them.
Timeline, weather and voice recognition are but a few which will die after server switch off was confirmed on pocket now podcast
...Continuing on the other option, Vector Luna arrived on Friday and I'm ditching Pebble.
Although my Pebble 2/HR has a better screen it's way smaller, looks more geeky (for me a plus) it has a HR sensor (was accurate enough despite some bad reviews) and the best of all it has voice reply ( probably defunct soon enough) - on Vector no HR and MIC not as refined apps as Pebble but it has the potential to be the best replacement out there for battery life and functionality. I really hate to charge anything, even my phone , every day ... If FitBit kept Pebble alive I've kept the Pebble over Vector, but given the circumstances I'll return it today. Just my 2 cents based on my experience with both.
got my pts on saturday. I love it! before this I've had 2 microsoft bands and a garmin fenix hr.
I've found the pebble more informative and easier to wear to the extent it's far better as a daily driver... sports functions remain better served by a sports band and I'll put that on when I put my sports gear on.
wife has 2 pebbles and a moto 36- 2nd gen and is very attached to the pebbles too.
wish I'd tried one earlier tbh.

Link? None of that makes sense, I think yo'ure confusing things. Weather uses a different server, and timeline doesn't use a server at all.

Hmph. That's disappointing.
Timeline will continue to work for calendar reminders as those are pulled from your phone and those events are not stored on Pebble's servers. However the weather/sunrise pins will probably stop working. Any other app that Pebble created that might push pins to your timeline will probably also stop working.

I got a Luna as well as a replacement of the time steel but it does not vibrate with notifications only with incoming calls. All the notifications enabled and the vibration is on. Anyone who went for the luna route have this issue?
I recently replaced my Pebble classic, and at the same time bought my wife one for Christmas. I then Found the news that pebble had sold out to fitsh*t and all warranty and support would cease. Immediately I returned the two new pebbles and bought two different devices. I got the Alcatel GoWatch (actually surprisingly VERY good) and I bought the Mrs a Sony SW3.
I'm gonna miss Pebble, but screw them - they used to be all about their Customers and it seems to me they should up up the creek without a paddle. My advice to everyone is FIND ANOTHER SMART WATCH! There's a lot out there that will beat Pebble hands down, just the battery life that is a pain on other devices.
Fitbit is unbelievable, they just bought Vector too. I just managed to buy a Vector luna over the xmas season from John Lewis for a £100 cheaper and now they been bought by fitbit as well as pebble. At least they don't stop the warranty and support immediately. I cannot believe how unlucky I am.
Server switch off, or just its removal of user-base results in not being able to 'reboot' your pebble. Your to be downloaded apps, watchfaces etc are neuther on watch itself, your ios phone... only on server, ubder you user account
May be hope...
Ok, Pebble-eers...I being a Pebble fanboy, started snooping around, the day I got the message that Pebble died. If your interested, look up Rebble, sorry, new guy...cant post links yet , its worth a look, the Pebble community is very much alive and well...or, another alternative is Gadgetbridge, although there are some drawbacks.
Wow!
I'm loving my PTS since the first day my kickstarter package arrived and before my Pebble classic was the best gadget I ever had. I'm still lucky with my PTS right now and wearing it every day along with gadgetbridge :good:
It was quite fun to write Watchfaces for Pebble since it's some of Code you've trust everyday
