[Q] Upgrading android 2.1 to 2.2 - XPERIA X8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a sony ericsson x8 and I can not download certain applications from the market. I was told it is because of the old version of android 2.1 I have.
Should I upgrade it to version 2.2? If yes, how can I do that?
Are there any disadvantages on doing that?
Thanks.

Some apps need armv7 to run, we can't change that but if you want to upgrade, read the stickies.

There are no disadvantages (well, if you like the X8´s Timescape, you´ll think that the fact, that it doesn´t work on Froyo is a disadvantage, but you can run Arc Timescape on it.), everthing is working with Froyo.
It´s smooth, you can take 3MP photos and VGA videos with it, you can play games with it, zoom with two fingers in the browser.....some people also say that the battery life is better with Froyo than with SE´s Eclair....just read nthe guides to install it, and then read the descriptions of the ROMs, and you´ll know everthinjhg you have to know before you can flash it.

Since I've been on custom software, I've never looked back, go for it Dude!

ow boi, smells good....

First of all thank you guys for the replies.
codfreak, I don't understand the meaning of your reply because I'm a new in this issue.
What is Froyo? Is my 2.1 version (or 2.2) also called like this?
If not, should I upgrade my X8 to Froyo and not to 2.2? and if I want to upgrade to 2.2 (or higher) anyway, can I do that?

Android versions get names by candys alphabettically:
Android 1.5 - Cupcake
Android 1.6 - Donut
Android 2.1 - Eclair
Android 2.2 - Froyo
Android 2.3 - Gingerbread
and so on...
Which means that Froyo is codename of Android 2.2. Also I would recomend you to try GingerDX by Doixanh which is really fast and fully workable Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) ROM.

For Gingerbread, do I need to install Gingerbread + GingerDX or only one of them?

not to cast any disrespect to the authors of those customed ROM but honestly has anyone seriously gone in and check through their codes? Right there could very well be the sneakest trojan you will ever find behind your next banking transaction.

Newbie here. Froyo 2.2 question.

I have the samsung captivate at 2.1 and it is rooted and has sideloading enabled where I can install non-market apps from my usb card. I want to update to Froyo 2.2. I have been reading but getting different answers about rooting and sideloading Froto 2.2 original leak. Also I have backed up my phone.
1.Can Froyo 2.2 original leak be rooted and sideloaded with this file?(superoneclickv1.5.4)
2.Is this the file for the original Froyo 2.2?(I897UCJI6-OCD-REV02-Low-designgears)
I want to say this is my first android phone and these things are nice. I used to only use windows mobile phones, but now...... hello android.
I would like to say thank you to all the people for the guides and help that make it possible for me to play with this fun phone.

To be honest, I think the latest cognition ROM is way better than the leaked froyo. Faster, smoother, just better. And cognition of course has sideloading enabled.
Coginition question?
I read a little about the coginition roms. They seem really nice but could you answer a few questions.
1.Can you start out with the lastest rom first?
2.I read that it is really hard to go back to your original flash enev if you have a backup.(I did make a backup.)
3.I am not being a smartass but, could you please answer my first questions in my first post please.
Thank you for replying so fast.

Yes that is the leaked JI6 Froyo firmware, and is also one click odin.
Thank you
Thank you for answering my question.
If i was you I would leave 2.1 and add side loading, lagfix remove blootware and you got a pretty good set up, I have flashed most of the Roms here and I wont say with one is the best becouse each one has it flaws and I think just the leaked Frito has the most bugs tho design gears is basing his cog on it so he fixes stuff as he goes

2.3 for the Captivate?

Are there any 2.3 roms yet? I havnt been on here very much and im still running a 2.2 rom. Its been kinda glitchy, i wanted to switch to the stock 2.2 but I only have macs and the program was for windows only. My friend showed me his captivate today and he was running 2.3. But when i asked him how he did it he said he had a friend do it. Can someone get me a link to a working 2.3 rom?

[Q] 2.2 to 2.3 is it worth it?

Just got a P1000 (UK) unlocked Tab and updated to the latest 2.2 Froyo using Kies.
Is it worth installing 2.3 and will it mess with the unlock?
Also, whats the simplest method to root the current 2.2 (most of the guides deal with 2.3)?
Thank you

easiest way to root is to use SuperOneClick root. It will work on 2.2 and 2.3.3. The update to 2.3.x should have no impact on the fact that the device is unlocked.
Thanks.
Does 2.3 have many advantages over 2.2?
I've done the custom ROM thing on my Galaxy S (running Darkys) but find it can make the device a little unstable.
I don't want to risk the same happening to the Tab.
There should be a stock update to 2.3 for most Tabs. Check the dev section.
It just depends on what you want outta yer Tab if the transition from 2.2 to 2.3 is worth it. There aren't that many big difference unless you run into apps that only work on Gingerbread.
I can confirm that 2.3 has better battery life than 2.2. As per my experience.

This is about the only reason to update... Otherwise root your 2.2 while you can (not saying 2.3 cannot be rooted - it just seems easier to root 2.2 and seems people en-mass have less trouble doing it) and update to overcome 4.0 (you can stay on the stock 2.3 - it is part of the procedure 2.3 stock -> then the overcome changes).
Or try out Technomancer's CM7 port. I use that. It is awesome.
Good times.

[Q]Froyo / CM7 Speed vs Camera?

Let me start by saying Thank you to any developer making these things possible. I'm enjoying my phone more then before!
We get used to take fast pictures on our phone's... For every little nonsense...
It's a thing we expect on our phones we buy these day's.
I am having issues with CM7 to get the camera working and i saw somewhere they have removed the camera from their rom.
Now, Froyo has the cam working but the speed of my phone is very slow with Froyo. I like CM7 for it's simplicity and speed and ofc it's way better then that crappy stock rom that come's with the X8.
Now for my questions;
Why did Cyanogenmod remove support for the camera?
Why does it work in Froyo and not in Cyanogen?
And, if possible, could i speed up Froyo by overclocking or tweaks?
Froyo cant run some of my app's like swiftkey x for example...
Do i have to make a choice between speed/camera?
Thank you!
(sorry for bad grammar, English isn't my first language .)
Why did Cyanogenmod remove support for the camera?
The CyanogenMod by FreeXperiaTeam is being built from sources, which means they are writting all drivers from nothing, not just modifying them from some other ROMs. As Sony Erricson didnt gave FXP camera drivers so they couldnt finish up that ROM. They also droped a support for our X8 as well as for X10 mini/pro because of their old hardwer.
Why does it work in Froyo and not in Cyanogen?
Froyo that our X8 has is also custom ROM based on CyanogenMod but version 6. For a long time we hadnt had working camera on Gingerbread based ROMs. The thing is developers used patched Stock 2.1 drivers in Froyo and that wasnt possible until our great dev Doixanh managed to patch that drivers to work on 2.3 (Gignerbread) as well.
And, if possible, could i speed up Froyo by overclocking or tweaks?
Of course you can. But I would sugest you to install GingerDX by Doixanh. It is fully working and really smooth CM7 ROM and it will even run on stock kernel.
Froyo cant run some of my app's like swiftkey x for example...
Probably because they are not compatible. Using older versions might solve that problem.
Do i have to make a choice between speed/camera?
GingerDX.

Thank you, sir!
I've just installed GingerDx v022-update.zip as a custom zip over CM7. Camera has small problems but that isnt a big issue. Menu is fast enough.
Even swiftkey is working on Ginger while i got massive error's using it with Froyo.
I think ill stick to GingerDx. Thanks for the info!
