[Solved] Hardware issue with power button - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Build date 1007 - in service August 2010.
I've been running Pinnacle 1.2 (been on it since v1.0).
Just moments ago I've found the power button to be unresponsive. This happened after I rebooted into recovery, sticking me there for a while.
I was stuck in a recovery loop- pull batt, reinstall batt, automatic boot back into recovery.
Somewhere in the process of trying different combinations of battery pulls with cable installs and volume up/down holds (trying for download mode) I ended up finally launching the ROM, but w/o a power button all I can do is pull the battery, and the moment I do, the phone automatically wakes w/o even touching the power button (which is totally new to me).
Any input would certainly be appreciated.

My first order of business is to flash to stock (JF6, bootloaders and all if all else failed) but being that it automatically boots when the battery is installed I don't think even a jig would help...or is the beer steering me wrong?

I am confused. You can go back to stock or no?

I cannot get into download mode. The only way to power the phone off is via battery pull.
I cant flash anything from recovery because it says the power button is disabled (it is).
As I put the battery back in the phone boots immediately...I mean the at&t screen lights up my palm before I put the cover on or even flip the phone over.

Use an app from market to enter download mode? system toolbox free is one

Used Odin to go back to stock KF1 and still no power button. Now System Toolbox won't work w/o root/busybox. lol
Once my phone falls asleep I can't wake it back up.
It may seem obvious that the power button is physically broken but I don't know why the phone boots up as soon as the battery is installed...that was never the case before this issue came up.

watsa? Anyone?
Can anyone else shed some light on what would make the phone boot when the battery is inserted (happened at the same time the power button became unresponsive), essentially denying me the opportunity to get to download mode.

beyond this point I am consfused myself. I initially blamed Pinnacle and thought going back to stock might fix it which obviosly didn't happen.. It seems like your power button is always "pushed" so as soon as you pop your battery in phone reboots..

On a second thought if it was the case then power button should have messed up functioning of your phone even after powering on. So I am consfused more. Need a hardware expert here

I'm preparing myself to deal with my beloved phone finally letting me down after all the success we've had...it's just really bad timing as I'm currently unemployed, broke and only 13ish months into a 48 month contract.

Ok, so after a physical tear down it seems to be in the external plastic of the button itself?
After removing the outer case and reinserting the battery I noticed it did not automatically boot up. I pressed the actual power switch/button that is connected to the board and the phone then powered up. I let it finish booting and held the power button down and the power options menu popped up. I clicked Power Off and it shut down fine.
This means it certainly isn't Pinnacle ROM (never thought it was, personally), or software related at all. Now to figure out what is going on between the plastic external power button and the power switch on the board.
Edit: Nothing was there? I blew out the dust reassembled the phone and now it works fine. Weird.

Boot-loop or bricked G1?

Hey all!
About a month ago I rooted my G1 for the 1st time via the 'one-click' recovery flasher method. I successfully rooted my G1 with the CyanogenMod 3.6.8.1 stable build, and then also successfully updated to 4.0.2 via the Cyanogen Updater. However, after about a week or so I made the fatal error of holding a glass of water and my G1 together and the inevitable happened... my beloved G1 in said glass of water! It was only about 80% in and only for a few seconds, and when I quickly took off the back cover etc it really didn't seem too soaked, water was in there but not a lot. It visibly seems fine (water hasn't got to the screen etc). After drying the best I could, I tried turning it on again, and managed just about to get it fully loaded before failing. Since then I think it basically goes into a boot loop: It goes on the G1 logo then after about 30 seconds a quick vibrate and again into the G1 logo (and repeat to infinity). I know there are certain things to try such as pressing home & power, or cam button & power etc but I don't think these work because as soon as I put my battery (and spare I've tried) into the phone it immediately powers on. This isn't normal is it? Surely you should have to press the power button? So because I don't have to press power to turn it on, I don't think these safe mode type boots work (I've even tried for example, holding down the home button then putting the battery in). I don't know if I am in a simple boot loop related to a rooting error, or if my mobile is simply knackered due to the water exposure!? It's been a couple of weeks now since the accident and I'm stumped
Any help, or suggestions would be gratefully appreciated!

You might have tried to turn the phone on too soon. You should have let it dry out for 24 or 48 hours before turning it on. Then there are methods of putting the phone in a bowl of rice to dry it out and others. But you said that holding cam and power or home and power don't do anything right?

[Q] Power button broken, battery trick is not working.

sorry if there is an answer somewhere, couldn't find it.
my power button on the N1 broke and yestarday I had to turn it off. the battery trick (plug in the phone, take out and re-insert the battery a couple off times) worked once before but now the phone simply stays off.
warrenty is not an option anymore for me.
Is there any another way to turn the phone on without using the power button?
thanks in advance
Edit: just in case, my N1 is an SLCD model and its running 2.3.4.
Wow, I'm having the same problem and was about to make a thread like this.
Running CM7, the phone crashed on me last night and I had to turn it off. I tried the battery trick, but it's never worked for me. The few times I've had to turn the phone off, I was lucky and the power button worked after mashing it for a couple of minutes, but now it's completely dead.
I'm under warranty, but right now I'm without a phone and and need it back up ASAP..
(Mine is also the SLCD model, if it makes a difference.)
Edit: Managed to mash the button to life once again; My phone is back. I think I need to give HTC a call.
Try pulling the SIM and SD, as well as the battery, and re-inserting them all...
The other option - I read a post by a guy whose power button was stuck in the closed position, and he had to open the phone and separate the contacts to get the phone to start...
Also if you are anything into some DIY repair work, there is always a spare part for this http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_kw=nexus one power flex
With the right tools, it shouldn't be to much of a problem replacing this part.

Power button is broken? How to reboot to download?

Power everything was working this morning
Noticed that my power button wasn't working...the screen stayed on. Pulled battery, put it back in and the phone booted without pressing power.
Was like "wtf?"
When it booted, I couldn't turn off the screen.
So I just left the battery out and took it home.
Put a new rom on phone, thought "This will fix it."
Wrong.
Had to flash using Rom Manager because in recovery the power button doesn't respond.
When it began to boot "AT&T Screen" wouldn't disappear and show me some Doc's v4.
I can manipulate it to boot into recovery but the power button doesn't work still.
I can NOT get it to go into recovery.
Can someone helps me?

have ODIN open, and battery removed from phone... hook up usb, hold both vol keys, while inserting battery... you should get download mode fine even with a busted power button... what you do next is up to u....
Once more, I can NOT get it to boot into recovery in that fashion.
I cannot place batter in the phone without it attempting to boot
(doesn't not get past the AT&T boot screen)
I cannot plug it up, hold volume buttons and then put in battery because it will just charge. If I unplug the phone, the phone still thinks it's charging actually.
My question really is Can I 'fix' the power button, or can I reboot it into download mode through command propt? I've never used ADB to access my phone, so that'll be new.

Dude... recovery is useless right now, you have a busted power button... and because of 'said busted power button', none of what you're trying to do is going to work... like youve said...
You are down to trying to force download mode with USB cord, holding the vol keys, and inserting the battery... ADB cannot run commands to a phone stuck at the boot screen... Thread title says, how to reboot to download, and with the button like it is, all you can do is what i've posted...
As to fixing the power button, i don't see why that's not possible... do u feel it press at all?

Yeah, it 'presses' and 'clicks'. I mean it worked most of the day, it got low on power and it just quit working.
Any luck forcing download by puttin the battery in while the usb is hooked up with the vol keys pressed in?
I was having the same problem with my power button and eventually the power button stopped working completely even though i could still hear it click. I sent it to mobiletechvideos and they fixed it really fast and it was a great price.

goes into boot-loop like if I were holding the volume up/down and the power together. That's what doesn't make sense.

And I could buy another used Captivate for $50. I have an upgrade in less than 3 weeks and this happens
It happened to me once before after flashing a bad kernel. I just did what B-Naughty had suggested. Remove battery -> plug in USB -> hold both volume buttons --> then insert battery. Put me right in download mode and Odin it back with a working power button. Unless it's really a hardware problem, then you're out of luck...

Oh in that case imo i would get another used captivate and wait for the sgs 3
Maybe if I went to a store and sucked up to them they'd let me upgrade a month early (especially since I was initially supposed to upgrade in October)
Might be down to getting/making a USB jig if it don't come up... but if you upgrade to gs2, the jig will work for that model as well so won't be wasted...

Maybe a jig would work. But easier, funner solution is adding a line for a Moto Atrix 1 for just a penny plus the $36 fee. Problem solved. Thanks for the help for what could just be a hardware failure. I'll upgrade my other line later when the SGS 3 comes out

Samsung Captivate Power Key Stuck???

Well for some reason, I pulled out my phone, and my power key stopped working. I have had this happen before. What I did was use odin one click ji6 to flash back to stock 2.2. (I have a 1012 build so i didnt want to talk to risk of bricking.) I was on cyanogenmod when this last occured, but now I'm on legend 4 kk4, corn kernal v7.0A. The real problem is that the OS, Bootloader, or something thinks the power key is being held down, and so i cannot get into download mode without using ADB. I am scared that if i brick the phone, i wont be able to get into download mode. Also, i went to an amusement park a few days ago, and i went on a water ride, and my phone got a little wet, not too much, and the stickers for water marks are still white, but i do not have warranty. I am not sure if the key is broken, or if it is the OS. Also, when i put my battery in, it auto-reboots. So i cannot turn my phone off without removing the battery. Also, i cannot flash because my computer is at home. Any suggestions?
well i found out it was a hardware issue so i need to go get it fixed, but im not sure, it works, but it is like loose, it sometimes works, sometimes doesnt. anybody have any idea before i send it in?
I have the same problem, what I do is turn on volume rocker wake. To get into recovery I either use Rom manager, or hold the combo to get into recovery when you reinsert the battery into the phone. You have to hold it until the boot loader screen shows for the second time. Once in recovery, either search back or home will be used to select options, depending on the kennel. I read some where that if you take apart the phone and clean where the button makes contact it will fix it, but if I were you I would send it in
EDIT: just found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1529320 it should help
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA
ya it isnt auto-rebooting, so I know its the plastic part of the key that is working. I actually tried volume rocker wake, and it didnt work out that well for me. I am actually on stock, ji6. I went to the att store and they told me to go get it fixed locally, so thats what im going to do. thanks for replying though

Black Screen, won't do anything.

Hello,
I have a rooted and TWRP installed but otherwise stock 5.something T710 that I had worked on months ago. It's been great and my daughter had been using it to watch videos a couple days ago. I took the tablet from her at the end of our road trip and noticed it had about 63% battery left. I left it in the truck while we went to the movies(about 40 degrees f outsides) and then drove home without ever touching it until we got home. I went to use it when we got home and it would not turn on. I plugged it in to let it charge thinking it died for some reason, using the stock charger, though battery icon never appeared. The next morning I went to check it and it still would not turn on.
When I press the power button or plug in or unplug the charger the Recent and Back soft key lights will turn on for a second, then turn back off again.
I've tried:
Holding the power button down alone for over 3 minutes.
Held the power and volume up button for over a minute
Power and volume down for over a minute.
Home, volume down and power for over a minute
Home, volume up and power for over a minute.
I can connect it to my computer and it recognizes that my Tab S2 is connected but no files show as the default for the device was just charging mode and not the file modes.
Odin3 v3.10.7 recognizes it as connected. But fails to send the TWRP file again.
Any help?
Since the soft keys light up and the computer recognizes the device, it sounds like maybe the tab is still working but with no display? By any chance did you have adb working? I f so you could try rebooting, or booting into recovery to see if you see anything on the screen. It's possible that when you held the button combos, that it did boot into download and recovery but you couldn't see anything? In which case it could be a hardware problem. Hopefully it will fix itself! Sorry I can't be of more help..
Well adb shows the device as unauthorized. Reboot command says the same thing.
The home key is unresponsive to my finger print unlocks and no sound plays when I try to adjust the volume, like the ding sound it makes to hear if this is the volume level I want. There are never any of the capacitive touch vibrations or whatever its called to feel when you press a button on the screen.
I was wondering if it had something to do with hardware it's just strange that it would stop working from just being in my truck. From my knowledge it was never dropped or bumped heavily or anything, at least recently.
I guess it is possible something just burned up inside, that would be inconvenient, I've got to look up if its still in warranty. I love the size and performance of this thing.
Thanks for replying, hopefully more to come.
Still can't get it to work, same issues as above. I let the battery fully die which took about 2+weeks from the initial post. Which is to say that eventually the back and recent buttons stopped lighting up. I recharged it and after holding the power button for a few seconds the same condition repeated itself. If I touch the power button or home button the back and recent button back lights turn on for a moment and turn off again. There is no other indication of life. I would assume if it was just a dead screen then I should feel it try to turn on.
If I had to replace parts which ones should I look at first? Probably just the main board?
Buy a new one. Send yours in as defect. Done.
erase111
I see that is an old thread, but I having the same issue to a certain degree. The screen goes dark, but I can see the back light. If I play around enough times, (pressing the back and process button, before pressing the sensor button... Sometime, pressing the volume buttons and back button before pressing the sensor button), everything goes back to normal. Of course, it some random time, even when I am reading a web page or some other activity, it will go back to black.
So has anyone figured out what this issue actually might be? I thought maybe it was an issue with the ROM I was using, so I just moved over to LineageOS 16, but the problem still continues!
