Webtop over HDMI only? - Motorola Droid Bionic

Haven't seen a post about this for our Bionic yet, is it going to be possible? or do we need to by that stupid ugly box lol.
Thanks

Ditto and...
My hope is to see Webtop stream over WiFi using the DLNA protocol. That way we could use the Bionic's screen as the mouse/keyboard and not have to lug around extra hardware.

boo on the webtop adapter
I bought one. excited1 get it plugged up change resolution to the highest it goes AND bam! 55 inches of glorious BIONIC in my living room. It was really impressive because i was sitting underneath it.
OK so plugged in hdmi, now the charger going to watch me some videos surf me some web properly LOW MEMORY LOW MEMORY ok boo
f course the whole time I am back and forth to laptop sitting behind me.
Then I tried to play some tunes through TV/surround NOPE only plays through phone speaker unless you set resolution to 720... on and on and on...
Just isnt worth it.

It hasn't changed too much from the atrix although i think it is built off a newer version of ubuntu cuz the xorg is definetly newer. Unfortunately lxterminal is pointing to xterm which only has a symbolic link to what they must have taking out when they cleaned up. Also 1080p is listed as a mode but xrandr doesn't set it right. Dpkg, apt, make, install, and other build tools are there. I am trying to be careful though so progress will be slow til we can get a fast boot sbf plus some koush clockwork magic. I will keep you posted if i find anything.

Hey guys. I'm working on porting webtop to the Droid3. Can any of you help out? Need to be rooted.
If you could send/post a dump of /osh, pastebin of ls -l -a /osh (for permissions), dump of /system and pastebins of ls -l -a /system/bin and /system/xbin, that would be amazing. PM me if you need.

B&N Nook Color

Anyone planning on getting a Nook Color? Specs look good and the price is definitely right but not sure how hard it will be to root.
The only thing that has been figured out so far is the factory reset. Home + Power + Vol up.
that's it so far
I got one and started messing w/ it right away
Got mine a few hrs ago, I am actually posting this from the nook.
I am impressed, considering the price and the fact that it is only marketed as an ebook reader (which is actually what I bought it for) it handles the web quite well. If we can crank the cpu up to 1.2Ghz with set cpu this thing would be almost perfect. When this thing gets rooted it is going to be awesome. Even if it never gets rooted, I will still be glad I got it. So far no luck getting it to install any apk's but I've only been messing with it for an hour or so. I'll post any progress or info I find on the web that might help.
WOW didn't think it'd hit the street yet. Did you get it from B&N directly? Wondering if their weekend discount will work for this...
I'm very interested in getting one for the wife- but want to know about rooting and .apk sideloading.
They advertise reading email- do they have the stock Android email app and you can add multiple accounts or do they just mean via using the web browser?
Has anyone compared this to the Pantech 7" tablet? I know that runs an older android- but I think it's got a few more dedicated apps (like calendar/mail etc) and I'm wondering if the Nook will be too Nook specific for my needs.
Please keep us posted!
Sorry for repost, but maybe you here will find it interesting:
Hi, NC people:
In my blog fineoils.blogspot.com I presented a way of rooting attack for NC, have a look.
There's also quite a collection of reviews of those who had a "professional" hands-on experience, with my comments.
My opinion is the toy will be a smash hit, and after some hopefully light hacking it could outperform Galaxy Tab (antiglare screen outperforms it already, LOL)
ok well it looks like the factory reset is sitting on top of recovery. When I do it I notice the recovery (green and red bg) flash up for a second. Maybe there is some sort of other key combination we need, or something to click quickly before the reset box pops up.
Yep, I got it from B&N directly they said they got them a few days earlier than expected. Still no luck on this end getting this sucker rooted but the more I use it the more I like it. I am still very happy with it even if it never gets rooted. My wife has a kindle and this thing makes her kindle look like a childs toy. The nook color is by no means perfect but for the money it can't be beat.
I have two of the other android tablets, the 7" $150 generic ipad looking thing running android 1.6 and a newer 7" one that runs android 2.1 and linux (dual boot) and neither one are anywhere close to the nook color. Both of my other tablets are rooted and I tried those methods on the nook but with no luck.
Anyway, I like the new nook and think it would make a great gift, B&N has them on display to play with if you still aren't sure. Lastly, for email I have been just using the browser (multiple accts) and it works great.
Let me know if you have other questions.
The original Nook was rooted so I'm sure its only a matter of time. I've been playing with my Nook Color and so far I like it quite a bit. My HTC Evo feels small now.

What do you think of those tablets for the price, though? Are they worth buying?
First things first is that we need someone that is good at doing usb sniffing. That way we could obtain the PID and VID of the device. From there we could add it to ADB's android_usb.inf file system.
For example we would be adding this into in .inf file:
;B&N Ebook
%SingleAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_XXXX&PID_XXXX
%CompositeAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_XXXX&PID_XXXX&MI_01
then save and run command to place into adb by the following command:
echo 0x955 >> "%USERPROFILE%\.android\adb_usb.ini"
if you're a good usb sniffer i'd more than willing to borrow your nose to sniff my color
Vendor is 0x2080 and device is 0x0002 but it only has a mass storage interface descriptor, AKA debug isn't enabled. In the "factory reset" mode USB isn't even enabled.
Needs it
I just got mine tonight and...yeah...we gotta open this puppy up....I'm not too happy right now.
If you guys don't get this thing rooted soon I'm gonna have to take it back.

I just picked one up today and I'm impressed so far. It would be nice to install some apps. The salesman said they were promising flash early next year. Sounds like froyo is in the works..
Nook Color boot over USB
I think I found a way we can bend this shiny toy to our will.
The OMAP3 series parts can be configured to boot from USB depending on how the sys_boot pins are strapped. The Pre folks use this to send a recovery flash utility to the OMAP on boot (see http://www.webos-internals.org/wiki/Last_Resort_Emergency_BootLoader_Recovery). Changing the PID to 0xD00E (OMAP36xx bootloader uses a different VID/PID), then powering off and powering on resulted in the utility catching the on-chip bootloader and interrupting the boot process.
It seems that B&N hardwired the OMAP to boot from USB before flash.
There are two paths we can take with this. The Pre has no microSD, so this utility sends a payload that runs from on-chip SRAM. We could build off their work and make our own fastboot workalike. However, one cool thing about this USB break-in feature is that you can choose a different boot device rather than sending code to the chip. The OMAP can boot off of either of its MMC/SD interfaces, and you can choose which one using the USB bootloader.
That means that a possible rooting / flashing scenario would be to copy a recovery image and bootloader to a microSD card, put that in the Nook, hook up USB and do boot redirection with a small utility.
For reference, the datasheet is here (16MB zipped PDF) and the USB boot documentation is in section 26.4.5.3.
Fantastic! Is this something you have the ability to do? I'd gladly throw someone a few bucks who thought they could pull this off.
BTW, bless the guys at webos internals. I have a Pre, and they have just been awesome for me and many others.
this thread and
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=825174&page=11
need to be combined..come on pokey you can do it man!
Boot utility, yes. You only need to change two values in omap3_usbload.c to make it do boot redirection on the Nook.
Bootloader and recovery, probably not. I don't have any experience with OMAP other than the last hour's worth of tinkering, and I should really be working on a class project right now. I was hoping I'd catch the attention of some more skilled devs around here.
It would help a lot to know generally what hardware is hooked to the OMAP, like the RAM amount and configuration, flash type, and what MMC port the external microSD slot is on.
I have a feeling you're on the right track, and you may in fact have clued someone with the right skills into this... I wish that someone was me... Thanks!

Nook Color Teardown

There's a gallery of NC teardown pics at zdnet. XDA isn't letting me post the link because i'm not verified, so maybe someone else can.
This was inevitable, but I hadn't been able to find it until today. I thought others might be interested as well.
http://www.zdnet.com/photos/nookcolor-teardown/487636 here it is
From the pictures I see a good possibility for a bigger battery, or even adding a second one. Lots of room, it won't be pretty but something could be fashioned to fit.

Looks good.
Nice to see some more details about the NC coming out, I have yet to find a *detailed* list of the real hardware specs though.. most of the "tech specs" list mention supported ebook formats...
I ordered one of these the other day via a relative in the US and hopefully will be getting it next week some time.
I will miss the haptic feedback though so am wondering if it will be possible to replace the useless mono speaker with a motor from a mobile phone or something..

Cool idea. But it'll only work for typing and maybe apps that have clicking sounds. Still, it should work just fine. Of course you'd have to attach it to the inside real tight. Duck tape won't do

Thanks, my mind is kinda running over with ideas actually
From the teardown pics the internals seem pretty basic and there is hopefully a good bit of space. I would love to know if there are any available usb / jtag / etc headers available though.
If not I was thinking also about the possibility of modifying the usb connector with a switch and a usb 3g dongle inside, I just don't know if there is a 3g dongle that is not based on mini pcie though.
As for the haptic feedback I guess you can just assign a "sound" to everything that should produce feedback.
What about the accellerometer, is that sufficient to control cars in steering wheel based games?
/mrintegrity
To answer your very last question yes.. I have Asphalt5 running and won my first race.

The usb dongle would have to support android. To my knowledge there isn't one... but physically it is possible to stick it inside. They aren't that big, just look big cause of the plastic casing.
I think realistically, for now a bigger battery should be the first thing attempted, given the OS limitations we'd face with other mods. It would also allow us to run the NC at 800 mhz at all times via setcpu.

Did you download from the Gameloft site? I couldnt get the version from my G2 to get past the license check, and the only other version I've tried is a pirated 3.13 version. I would be glad to pay for it if I knew it would work.
Tried disabling the compatibility mode and the top of the screen is blank and I have to press high to get selections to work.
EDIT: I figured it out. You have to load a version made for Samsung Galaxy Tab or Galaxy S. I downloaded a version from Gameloft.com with Galaxy Tab selected as my phone and the game displays fine. If you purchase from their website you have to do some trickery. When they text you a download link, just type the link address from your phone in a browser on the Nook Color and the download should start and install the game.
isolated_epidemic - I'm having the same issue as you with Asphalt, as well as some of the other GameLoft games. Does anyone have a solution for this?

Android DosBox

http://androiddosbox.appspot.com/
Seeing this needs a physical keyboard. Has anyone tried this yet via bluetooth keyboard or a USB keyboard. I would try but I don't have any compatible keyboards. I would literally hemorrhage if I could play Shadow Warrior or Duke Nukem 3D. Anyone willing to have a go? Please and thank you ahead of time.
*edit* I am picking up a keyboard that will work with it and have a look see tonight.
Any luck? I actually have an old copy of shadow warrior in a box of old computer crap I couldn't bring myself to throw away. I remember the trouble of trying to get that game to play on my apple g3 using an orange PC win95 mimic card and dosbox style prompt. God speed sir, I would be one thing less on the bucket list if I could play Marathon 2: Durandal on my gtab.

Got to wait till the weekend to give it a deeper look. Keyboard works for me. Maybe I will hit up the gtablet irc and see if I can get a few more heads in the game.
If anything, as soon as my toddler is at grandmas for the weekend its going to be a pretty hot date with adosbox, me and a six pack of IPA.

A man after my own heart, I never do anything without some sort of beverage. It sooths the android rage when I can't figure something out. I'll try as well, except my kids will be home hitting me asking for the "Tab-Board"
I've used an old HP fullsize keyboard and usually use the mini keyboard that comes with the case, both USB. I also use both aDOSBox and another varient (tho for the life of me I can't find the link ATM). Have 7th Guest and ROTT and Windows 3.11 on it currently.
IIRC, aDOSBox didn't support sound (or rather it emulated it to null) which is why I changed.
This weekend I want to pull Descent over ...
Awesome to know someone got it working. Pretty cool you got windows 3.1 on it. I'm planning on starting simple and seeing about getting rogue or scorched earth to run from the prompt, if I can do that I will totally drop in 3.1 too. Thanks for the heads up, hopefully I will have good news to report on Monday.

It's only HDMI mirror because Webtop OS is not installed.
You'd need to find a motorola stock rom, mount it and use a file browser to extract The Webtop.apk
Simply installing the APK wouldnt work either because Webtop requires it's own partition on internal storage. Webtop OS is another operating system running ON TOP of Android. I dont see it working for our phone. This idea WORKS in theory, but I dont see anyone with a non motorola phone using a webtop mod. So its probably slim chance we'll see a working Webtop on the Atrix HD
Can anyone get me the apk's for webtop on another motorola device running ICS?
I'd be willing to try my hand at taking the apk apart and all that fun stuff.
They probably didnt add the webtop because they decided to downgrade to 8GB of storage, like there is much of a price difference between 8 and 16GB of flash memory these days...

Exactly, plus the whole webtop OS didnt sell as well as they'd hope under AT&T and the idea is dying off with Verizon.
@kulow:
Having the webtop APK is useless. It contains nothing about the OS. It's only a bridge to start it up when your plugged in.
WebOS sits on internal storage and a separate Operating System. It needs to be extracted and configured just like an Operating system.
Having the APK will just launch an App that will search for a non-existent Partition.
If you want it, go get an Image of a stock rom, mount it and use a file explorer to find the *.*apk
With only 8gb on our phone I could see Webtop taking up to 4gb since it needs its own partition. It's also very RAM hungry.
There is no use in trying to even fathom working on webtop when we have the issue of no Root and the Locked Bootloader.

Well I've been doing some digging around on the Droid Razr forums and noticed that Webtop 3.0 for ICS was less webtop and more of a tablet view. Right now when you dock it does a mirror of your screen. I know this is probably way beyond my knowledge but the possibility of digging in to the structure and code of some of the apks involved with webtop 3.0 would lead us to a more tablet optimized view when connected to a lapdock.
Another thought was, when root/bootloader unlock happens, was to manually create the ext3 osh partition called by webtop and place the required files found in the osh partition from a similar device like the Razr.
I'm a novice at this so right now it's all baseless ideas that may prove to be impossible to do, but what is impossible for some may be possible for others.

If we could make a browser just for the resolution of mirrored mode, all you would need is a BT Keyboard&Mouse.
That would use way less resources on the device, and it would defeat the purpose of WebTop OS being installed and wasting all that space.

Technically yes and no.
Yes, because its a linux shell running off a partition under Android.
No, because it still requires Android to run.
The lapdocks seem to be as popular as chrome books.
I see Webtop being phased out on future devices.
As good as the webtop idea was, people still want all the gadgets and will still buy a tablet, netbook/laptop, and a phone, so the Lapdock is pretty obsolete.
It's slower than a netbook, and has less features than a tablet. $150 for the lapdock just for a full screen browser seems out of the question.
It becomes more useful with the Ubuntu mod, but it still has functionality issues.
It's annoying that it's gone now, but in all honesty it wasnt that useful. If you bring a lapdock, you might as well bring a netbook and tether it.

Webtop - will it work with CM9 or AOKP?

Seriously thinking about getting the lapdock, since the Atrix one is very cheap and easily modified to work with the Droid 4.
Only problem is I don't want to go back to the stock ROM. Has anyone gotten Webtop to work on one of the ICS based CM or AOKP ports?
Also how much control do you get in Webtop. I understand it's basically Ubuntu, but can you install new packages or build your own from source. Is there hardware access to the GPU?
If your on an ICS leak webtop is 3.0, which means it is just tablet ui and is no longer a "separate" system.

Oh, that's a bit useless
I was looking forward to the idea of being able to boot into Ubuntu and compile full fat apps to run there.
Still interested in using it with a modded Atrix lapdock though. So does webtop work with AOKP?
not at the moment, because CM9 and AOKP still don't have support for HDMI-out.

That Ubuntu for Android is interesting, I was a little disappointed that webtop on ICS is just Android tablet UI rather than Ubuntu, however it is awesome that if you just use an HDMI cable the phone touchscreen changes into a touchpad!
I wonder how they are getting away with not publishing the source? As soon as a handset turns up for sale with Ubuntu on it, surely the source is going to have to come out or they will be violating the GPL, or is Ubuntu full of propriety closed source crap these days? (It's been a while since I used Linux as a desktop OS, and it was always Debian. Ubuntu didn't exist then)
On a related note, has anyone found a micro-HDMI cable that is actually capable of running at 1080p without corruption and sparklies. I have tried two and both were rubbish.
I got the motorola one from amazon, and it works flawlessly. I also got one from dealsextreme.com, which was considerably cheaper and free shipping, but they're services can be a bit shoddy at time, but I haven't had any big issues with them, and the cord quality is fine, no issues that I can see on my 1080p tv.

I tried a Motorola one... it was better in that you could actually see the 1080p display, but still flashed and corrupted.
I know my monitor is more sensitive than most to poor quality HDMI devices (most notably the PS3), so I guess I'll just have to look for a fancy one, or a tiny adaptor to use with an existing good cable.
For those interested: I found a way to install Ubuntu on my ICS Droid 4. It comes with Firefox and LibreOffice, some options like installing new apps seem a bit limited (maybe not in the donate version?), but I didn't go into too much detail.
While it's probably not as integrated as the original WebTop was, it might be more flexible in terms of settings/applications. The way to access it is basically to start it via Terminal, then (Android) VNC to view / interact with the desktop.
The link to the free version is: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zpwebsites.linuxonandroid
There's also some donation keys available, not sure what features they add. For me, tinkering around with it for 5 minutes is probably all I need it for, and the image is 3.5 GB so I'll probably remove it soon. Still, awesome that it works!

(Disclaimer: the avid AirDroid user will note that you can't log in from 2 separate clients: that's correct, the Firefox AirDroid is actually disconnected, I just moved the 'connection lost' pop-up all the way to the right)
