[Q] G1 won't boot into - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I used to have a G1 until last year, then I gave it to my friend. My friend returned it in broken. Seems like she dropped it a lot. [typical drunk college freshman ]
Anyways, I had an engineering SPL, recovery flashed, and biffmod or superd [wow brings back memories] on the phone.
The phone won't even boot. I press the power button, no LED backlight. I plug it in, no charging LED. I changed batteries, nothing. Can't get into bootloader/fastboot/adb/recovery.
Is this a brick that can be repaired or am I SOL?

Does it even come on?

It does not come on.

So you are saying camera+power, home+power, etc... will not take you anywhere?
What come up when you press those ket sequence?

Like I said, I am unable to boot into fastboot/recovery/normal boot. I don't even see the G1 logo. The LED back light doesn't even turn on.
I thought with a brick you're still able to see the G1 splash screen, so I don't know what to call this.

Looks like you have a black screen. Since you said that your friend drop it constantly it must have broken a wire or something that cause the screen to go black.

Bleh. So much for practicing cooking ROMs with that phone :[ thanks for your help!
Doesn't seem like a JTAG or whatever can fix this issue.

does the light go on when you charge it? or plug in a usb?
could be a dead battery..

From the first post
"The phone won't even boot. I press the power button, no LED backlight. I plug it in, no charging LED. I changed batteries, nothing. Can't get into bootloader/fastboot/adb/recovery."
any other suggestions?

well what im saying is maybe the battery is completely dead... did you try booting while plugged into a charger? lol stupid question mayb but im jus trying to cover all fields before we assume you have a brick

Lol. Like I said, I changed batteries. As in I replaced it with another one.
And yes, I did try booting with it charging, which is why I noticed there's no charging USB
Sent from my HTC Glacier using Tapatalk

ooo ok... dam that sucks, im not sure what else it could be. unless you dropped the phone a lot lol

Am I able to fix it with a JTAG? or is this kind of brick unfixable?

G1 Black screen, Cannot get to bootloader

Hey, I have been given a phone off a friend to fix but it wont turn on. Booting normally, I get a vibration and then the backlight comes on but i cannot see anything. When i try to boot into the bootloader by holding the camera button and powering it on, the backlight comes on but nothing else. I cannot see the bootloader. Under both circumstances, I cannot turn the phone off. I have to pull the battery to turn it off.
Does anyone have any suggestions about a possible fix? Thanks
Havie you tried send when trying to enter bootloader? If it resets then you can still get to bootloader. If not, your friend has soft bricked and only way is to JTAG which takes strong hardware knowledge and steady hands.

ok im having the exact same problem. actually i thought it was a battery problem so i spent 77$ on a 3700 mAh new batter i guess tripple life... and got it yesterday booted gave same problems. black screen where T-Mobile should be yet the rom loads with scribble screen meaning u see part but it looks like the pixels are messed up. so actually decided to resort to what someone told me a Factory Reset so Pressing Camera + Power i got a Black Backlight screen yet wont show... and I cant turn it off without Taking out the Battery this has become a issue after installing cyanogen 5.0.7 T5... since then i Re-rom'd to superbad 1.2.5 same problem screen scribbles and stops im thinking did I fry it i dont even know how to google my problem because its pretty unique it isnt a battery issue its something in the hardware ... or am I wrong please send us some feedback... ill keep this thread in mind
Sorry, what do you mean by 'send'. I am a complete noob when it comes to G1's. I have worked out i can shut off the phone by holding call + menu + end but thats it. I still cannot see anything at all on the screen. I still only get a vibration on boot. How would I know if the boot has been sucessful but i simply cannot see?
Could the flex ribbon cable be nackered?

Help. Please. G1 black screen!

Just finished rooting my g1. I was installing the new radio and the phone WAS KNOCKED OFF THE DESK. Battery flew out. Now I get nothing on the screen, power button does nothing. Ive tried every bootup option but the phone does nothing.
Is it bricked?
Sorry, it's a brick. Time for N1.
Edit: I did not read it right. You say that phone does not respond to any button presses? Try leaving it on the charger for few hours (for the hell of it) If it does not do anything after that... you've got a brick. And don't get your hopes up anyways... there's 95% chance that it can't be revived.
Good luck.
Yeah, its nonresponsive. No keys work or anything.

[Q] G1 weirdly semi bricked

I don't use my G1 anymore, but I'd like to get some ics on it for ****s and giggles. Unfortunately the phone seems to have forgotten how to work.
I was happily running CM 5.0.7 or somesuch a while ago, when it decided to just power off and not turn back on. After pressing the power button many times it magically came on again... for 15 minutes. This went on for a while before it flat out wouldn't turn on at all. I thought it was the battery, so I got a new battery. This didn't help.
So I put the phone on a shelf, got a new phone and forgot about it for a long time. Then one day I got curious. I plugged it in and sure enough the orange light turned on. After it fully charged, I booted it up and put whatever the news CM version was.. 6 maybe? Anyway all was good, for about an evening. I pulled the battery and put it back on the shelf. Now that ICS is out for it, I'd like for this phone to work again. I just plugged it in and let it sit. The LED never came on. I hit the power button and nothing happened. Then I unplugged it and then all the backlights on the buttons came on. If I press the power button all the backlights turn off as long as I am pressing. The second I take my finger off all the backlights come back on. The screen and LED haven't even come close to coming on.
Does anyone have any idea what's up?
PS. I just want to clarify, I never bricked it in a conventional sense. The ROM worked fine as long as it was powered up. I could reboot it and everything.
thats happening to my old g1 too...still dont know how to fix it or whats wrong with it =[
Probably a loose or broken cable
My old G1 also got messed up because of a broken screen cable.
This sounds like the cable connecting the smaller board with the buttons and usb to the motherboard
i guess i'll open it up and see if anythings wrong =p

[Q] HTC Vivid Black Screen... :(

I don't really know what happened. When I press the power button my phone's screen lights just black then goes blank. When I press my buttons they vibrate but nothing happens. I've tried pulling the battery out several times, leaving it on the charge and all other kinds of things. It is just not working. Does anyone have the solution to this problem?
I'm not sure if this is the same issue..but along the process of rooting my rogers raider I encountered thus during a regular restart. I thought I bricked my phone but realize that the back light was just off and my phone was actually in the recovery menu. I put the phone under bright light and I could just barely see the headings in the recovery menu. It took some tilting and angling the phone just right to see it, but I was able to run a nandroid recovery and get back to a point before this happened. Once again, not sure if its the same thing but try tilting the phone around and using the volume keys to see if you can see the recovery menu in the blank screen.
Hope this helps

This doesn't seem to be the situation I'm having but thank you anyway. +Thanks.
when you plug it in to charge, does the orange charge light come on for 4-5 seconds then go out again? have you tried to hold the vol down key and the power button to get into HBoot? If you can get into HBoot, you might be able to get into recovery.

Yes, that is exactly what is happening. I tried what you said but it is not working. My phone won't go into Hboot.
I think your battery isn't charging (at least that was the issue I was having). Your battery will only charge when the orange light goes on, and if it's anything like what was happening to me, when the orange light went off, that's when the buttons would vibrate. If this is the case, it may sound tedious, but you have to watch the phone. When the orange light goes off, push the home button several times and the vibrating will stop. Then you should see the orange light come on again to signify the charging state. It'll go off again after 4-5 seconds and the buttons will vibrate. Repeat the process of pushing the home button and letting the orange light come on and eventually, the phone should try and turn on. You can try and see if it'll boot, but mine never had enough juice to turn on. So I would pull the battery when the HTC Logo came up and repeat the process with the orange light. This time though, I would hold the vol down button knowing that when it tried to turn on again, it would load into the bootloader. I can't guarantee this'll work for you, but give it a go. What might make it easier is borrow a charged battery from someone and see if it'll load into the bootloader. That might save you from that tedious process.

I tried your method.. And when you said to tap the home button several times... It never stops vibrating.. It just keeps going.

help the charging light doesn't come back again.. vibration has stopped.. but still no charging light
help pleaseeee
Try different battery fully charged and see if your phone turns on. It it does then plug your phone for charging and see if charges.
Try connecting your phone with usb cable in computer and see if your computer recognize the phone.
there can be three issues.
1. Your battery is dead and won't charge
2. Your charging port on phone is not working
3. your phone backlight is not working.

EDIT: I have stopped looking for these threads. The more I look, the more I find. If the above threads don't convince you that there is a serious issue with the vivid, then adding more of the same problem will no longer help.
I have added this thread to a growing list of similar threads. Please read the other threads and see if your issues seem familiar.
From what I understand... Don't let your battery run out on this phone. Some Vivids kill batteries.
Solution? None yet.
1. Buy a new battery once a couple of months-ish, until someone figures out why some Vivids are eating batteries. YMMV
*OR*
2. You might invest in a external charger and see if that can bring the "Vivid munched" battery back to life. YMMV
I vote to thread merge the above threads if this proves to be the issue.
Hello
I hope to get an answer here to avoid a new thread. I was trying to return my vivid back to gb from ics. I had booted into the bootloader and i dont even remember at this point what i thought i was going to do. I think i got distracted. But anyway i pressed vol down to boot recovery because i was going to do a backup and i looked away from the phone for a minute and when i came back to it the phone was black screen. i hit the power thinking it was just on standby but nothing. I notice it was backlit on the screen but nothing would happen when i press anything. I pulled the battery waited a few min put it back and now totally black with no activity at all. no lights no vibrating no power on, no adb. I have played with a lot of phones and even iphones too so if this thing is fried i guess i will consider myself lucky that its the first ive actually killed out of probably 30 phones. I have searched and tried many things but i cant believe there is no way to recover it. I have recovered a lot of phones I thought I bricked before. any help is greatly appreciated. I was on ics and rooted. I also relocked the bootloader. (i was planning to go back to gb) I thought i had a recovery installed but maybe not. i posted in another thread that i was unable to get hboot by power + vol down method. i could only do it through the tool kit. so i dont know if any of that matters

I hope someone resolves this issue, I've messed with lots of phones. But this is really weird. But I got the same problem where all that happens is that there is backlight on but no boot IMG no HTC logo, no bootloader, recovery. Completly non responsive. At first it wouldn't even power on until I would unplug from a power source. Whether it was unpluging the charger or removing the battery. That's when the backlight would flash. All this happened in the process of flashing a PH39IMG.zip
Is there no other fixes for this? Anyone? Please

I once got stuck on the HTC screen (White background) and found out I could access the device in adb.
So, connect your phone to your pc and check if you can access it from adb (adb devices). If you can try get to the bootloader from here and see what happens (adb reboot-bootloader)!
And if you can access bootloader,
>If you need to get back to stock, get your carrier RUU, put rom.zip from it in an external sdcard and use reboot into hboot again, OR
>if you need a custom ROM unlock bootloader, flash a custom recovery (TWRP is cool) and you may use TWRP to install your ROM
I hope this helps... lets know...
I did mention I cant get it to recognize the phone. So no adb I tried all that before posting. Im afraid im just dead
So I am having the same problem. I eventually got it on yesterday but I turned off my phone and I am back to square one. Would using the vivid toolkit work to reboot to hboot? or am I stuck like this until i replace battery?
4 hours later I am back on!! never turning this thing off again
Had the same problem and just left the at&t store and its the battery. Once he exchanged batteries it worked fine

HTC One Not Charging :(

I don't know what to do now, I'm feeling depressed just by thinking about my problem. Okay, so just to give ya the backstory (nothing big), my phone's battery died when going home to the gym (automatically shut down), didn't think much about it. I got home, after awhile, I plugged in my HTC One into the charger and it wouldn't charge at all!!! :crying: Never happened to me before, I'm running on the latest TWRP, and on the Google Edition rom. Now on to what I did next.
I tried just leaving it on there for a few hours, NOT A PEEP, no LED light, nada just completely dead. Then I plugged it into the laptop USB port, it doesn't recognizes the device but it did install a driver too (forgot what it was called though). And the computer does indeed recognizes the device's existence cuz I hear the computer make that sound when you hook it up to the computer. Also in the the Devices and Printers on Windows 7, it either says Unknown Device or USB Input Device depending on what USB port I hook it up to. And after a few hours charging from the PC, the LED light did come back but only the low battery is dead pulsing (dunno what else to call it lol, its not the solid LED light). And it only does it for a few minutes, goes away then repeats. So does that mean there is some glimmer of hope? I've tried holding the Power button for a minute or 2, nothing. Power button + Vol Up? Nope. Power button + Vol Down? Nope. Do all of those while the LED light is pulsing? Nope. When its completely black? Nope.
So what can I do?! I can't claim warranty because I bought this off Craigslist (plus I'm rooted, so that would be moot anyways), can someone help this depressed as heck man? Its like I'm watching my best friend die slowly. :crying: lol. Sorry if it was a long read, just wanted to put everything in OP, would appreciate the help!

Thank you for responding. Yeah, I tried those 2 steps, so far no good. I'm just very confused because when I charge the One by my PC, the LED orange light just blinks for awhile then goes away, then the cycle continues, does that mean the battery isn't 100% completely dead? god I'm so confused and sad at the same time lol.
This seems to be happening with TWRP 2.7.x. If you can possibly flash a different recovery you may resurrect your phone...

How can I flash anything when the phone wont wake up? ugh, the only hope I'm getting is that the LED is blinking from time to time, meaning there's at least something going on.
Anyone else?
Anyone? I guess theres nothing else to do huh?
*If* twrp 2.7.0.0 caused your issue (which is hard to say since we don't know which recovery you are using) then somehow you have to overwrite the recovery in fastboot.
The phone needs to be able to boot into HBOOT and then go into fastboot. the battery will have to have enough charge for the recovery flash to succeed.
i honestly don't know the next step for your case, maybe someone else can help.
