Looks like the Devs have been busy the last few days. Not only did we obtain root for the D3 we gained root for most of Motorola's phones. Now today we hear that the Droid 3 has a custom recovery, but that is not all. Since the D3 shares a lot of similarities with the Bionic not only did the D3 get a recovery but so did the Bionic! We will be gathering the method in which to install the new recovery on your prize possession soon so everyone can enjoy the benefits of ClockWork Recovery.
All credit for this working recovery goes to @Hashcode

It's a great day to be a Bionic owner! You seeing this Motorola???

Nice! Let the custom ROMs roll in

I see the picture, but I sure wish there was a link!
Does anyone know if RZR recovery works on any rooted droid? I used it on my OG Droid and it was awesome.

As someone new to Android:
Does this breakthrough mean custom ROMs for the D3/Bionic?

Awesome. Does this mean the bootloader is still locked, or is that still being worked?
I don't have the phone anymore, but my friend has a Bionic and it was the first phone he rooted. He's interested in the custom rom and CWM thing.

Should allow for at least custom roms to be built. The question is if this got the bootloader too ... otherwise the roms can customized but the kernel will be stuck on stock.
Still, it opens up a lot of options to improve the phone.

ROMs yes, bootloader, not quite yet. Still working on that one.
I can't wait until the CWM Recovery is released, shaking in my robot boots.

God damn do I have respect for these devs. The phone hasn't even been out for a week!

EDIT: Need to clarify. There are 2 recoveries being worked right now, the one I linked from cvpcs which is bootstrapped, and the one we heard about last night from p3droid, which is 2nd init.

What is the difference? Will they both run through Clockwork Mod? Does one offer an advantage over the other?

Hmm, well I just switched from a Droid x to bionic and the 2init was the thing that really got the party started so I'm definatly looking forward to that. Although the bootstrapper will be nice too, as I expect it will be finished before the 2init.

Someone way smarter than me can clarify, but my (remedial) understanding is that bootstrapper inserts code prior to a reboot, so that upon reboot a new set of instructions are run that take you to recovery.
I think 2nd-init is a different way to do the same thing, it just creates a 2nd set of instructions upon boot, but doesn't require an actual reboot to prompt the code.
That's what google taught me, but again, I read like 2 websites and didn't get it all.
I'm more of a light-stuff-on-fire kind of guy, than a developer.

Unrevoked team: Root And Recovery reflash tool (updated 7/14/10)

Recovery Reflash Tool
Available for linux, mac, and windows all at once. Also should support Evo, Incredible, and Aria, Eris, and Desire.
First steps:
1. You will need to make sure in windows at least that you have the proper driver for hboot:
http://www.unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php?id=public:windows_hboot_driver_install
2. HTC Sync is BAD news... If you have it, please uninstall if you have issues, or just for spite. It interferes with us communicating to the device randomly, also pdanet, doubletwist etc could cause issues. If it uses USB and you have problems, try disabling/uninstalling until after the reflash is complete.
3. When asked ALWAYS CHOOSE CHARGE ONLY, perhaps you should check remember this...
THE LINK: http://unrevoked.com/recovery/
FAQ: http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/unrevoked2
Help I'm stuck at waiting for system to settle
check these common issues:
- You switched your driver to the one from this post? It's NOT identical to the SDK one.
- You don't have any usb applications that might be taking focus while we are working with the phone right?
- Is the SD card present in the device?
- You did give su permenent access when you allowed it in superuser right?

It's coming soon, we are about to test on some users devices. No need to volunteer, we will choose folks out of the incredibleroot irc channel as needed.
Will be available for linux, mac, and windows all at once. Also should support Evo, Incredible, and Desire if we ever get someone with one to help test and set a few things. To clarify it will require that you have root already. If you don't, please proceed with the other method for now to get it until we have a better option (which still is in the works).
This will be the release thread. Subscribe if you like.

Still new to android world. What will this tool actually do ?
Well it's primarily going to allow users with root to get around the nand lock and flash a custom recovery that will allow custom roms easily. As well as modifying system at will by rebooting to recovery with adb enabled inside it.

Will /system be rw while booted in android?
not until our next project completes, a special hboot to enable full nand write. For now we are just enabling it to flash recovery as the next step gets very dangerous.

So we will still have to jump through the same hoops to get into recovery mode? I did it once but can't seem to do it again so i have root access but haven't been able to remove all these crappy sys apps.

It sounds like the incredible team knew what they were doing and took there time with the programing.
Just another example why this phone isn't half ass done...
Can't wait for nand accesses and custom roms. Wish I knew more about programing and could help out...
I really just want to get root on this phone one time before I die... I have staired at loop.bat so much I'm dreaming in DOS...
Really I had a dream that I got root and passed the shell... I woke up and my wife asked me what was going on I told her I got root she laughed at me and told me I was dreaming. She now makes fun of me calling me a Nerd... She says most guys dream about women and I dream about rooting my Dinc.
I didn't mention to her it was two naked cheerleaders that helped me get root.
Great work guys!

@dr154
I have the exact same Kernel that u have in ur pic.....not sure why ....perhaps they got more than one leaked test version ...
Change log- not quite sure. Quite a bit for me coming from 2.1.
I had to go back and redo su.
I also had to uninstall rom manager, run bootstrap and then reinstall rom manager in orderto load the new tranquility rom by p3 via recovery.
I am not having any market problems.
I had to reinstall adobe flash after tranquility rom. Love having flash now.
Good times and enjoying it.
Tranquil Froyo 2.3.13.MB810 FTW
Also, no market fix in that current build, so i made one if any need it...
Modded build.prop - Changes below
Market Fix
ro.telephony.call_ring.delay=1000
windowsmgr.max_events_per_sec=60
wifi.supplicant_scan_interval = 90
dalvik.vm.heapsize=32m
Similar to this post - LexusBrian400 - [UPDATED][MOD] LOTS of Build.prop edits! but includes market fix on new 2.3.13 release build.
2.3.13 Market Fix
I read on another forum that since bootstrap/koush don't have boot loader access, the kernel cannot be updated unless using the verizon sbf...

That's correct, kind of. Kernel and all can be updated through a correctly signed update.zip from Motorola not just an sbf. P3 and company have the full update. As in Kernel, system, the works. They aren't releasing it due to C&D worries, so we, the lowly, only get the new /system files. There definitely is a new kernel in that update, whether it contains any new changes that are worthwhile is a good question.

This isn't a carrier-subsidized phone, it's a Nexus. Unlocking the bootloader and thus root is a feature fully supported out of the box.
Nothing special here, you can easily root any Nexus device.
We buy Nexus devices because we expect its bootloader to be easily unlocked (fastboot oem unlock) and easy to root, and the direct Google updates.
Sent from my R800x
Everyone knows on nexus its just a case of fastboot oem unlock
I was hoping for a source, cause who ever it is already has their hands on a device... we could get a system dump maybe?
Wow, amazing.. Or not. You only need one command to unlock a nexus phone, it is a built in feature.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
im glad everyone knows how to unlock the bootloader, that doesnt give you root though.
with custom kernel that means someone had to have pulled the stock image off using an exploit that works on 4.2 (in which case the device in question may be fully stock except root). with custom recovery it isnt impossible to do without the stock kernels but it certainly makes it a bit more time consuming.
so while im happy everyone knows its indeed a nexus device this proves 1 of two things, someone already has a 4.2 ready exploit (doubt it would go public any time soon tho), or some for of custom recovery is already made for the device.

The only purpose of an exploit on a device with an unlockable AND relockable bootloader is to save some people from wiping /data. That's it. You can achieve the exact same thing with unlock->root->lock. There was only a couple people who seemed to possibly be implying that unlock bootloader means root. The rest of us were saying with open source recovery and fastboot oem unlock and the fact that exploits don't matter, the rooting of this device is a forgone conclusion.

As i said in my post i get that custom recoveries are used for that. everyone seemed to be bashing this thread but as i said it holds more valuable information than most of the threads on this forum. if someone made a custom recovery then chances are day one of shipment it will publicly available and everyone can root using it, its a step towards development regardless, you wouldnt shun someone showing off TWRP/CWM on the N4 saying "oh its a nexus that was easy.." its the same work to get root.
if this was rooted using an exploit then even better news IMO, sure its "fairly" useless on this device (although using it you can then grab dumps of the images and make recovery etc). but there are a lot of devices out there who could use this exploit.
but yes i agree that this phoen would have had a way to root very quickly regardless, just amazed to see people think they could root it the same way as they did their other nexus devices (which prolly had recovery before they got the device)
Excuse my n00by question here, but if I were to unlock my bootloader which I am going to do as soon as my N4 has some charge, that isn't going to give me Root which is what I want but eh.
Is there any known working method of rooting this device at the moment? Is it likely that Bin4ry's ICS/JB exploit will work here?

Chainfire's CF Auto-Root confirmed working for Sprint SPH-L720

I just wanted to let everyone know that I was able to (very easily) auto-root my SPRINT GS4 using Chainfire's auto-root.

I did charge it to full, but there are many varying schools of thought on that subject. Typically I charge to full then run to 0 and charge to full a few cycles. I have my phone in my dock right now, but the cord to the dock unplugged so it isn't charging.
Not trying to be a kill joy by any means but people Chainfire is a pretty smart dude and has created a lot of things. Not saying that this wont work on Sprint variant but make sure you see his disclaimer.
NOTE:
Some have reported success on Sprint S4's, though I still advise against using it and waiting for a Sprint specific version.
I used this root method, too. Everything is working great.

At this point, it's a use and test function of root required applications..
We have had a report of an application not functioning properly on Motochopper where CF's Autoroot works just fine.
Use and report is the best response to your question.
I've tried every root app I could think of and so far no issues with the CF method. Of course YMMV.

I actually did mototchopper method. Worked perfect. Easy to unroot if I want. People having problems with certain apps might not have had busybox installed. That was the first root app I installed and I haven't had a single issue. Does cf-auto root automatically install busybox? Also, does anyone know which apps are safe to remove or freeze? Any working recoveries out yet?

[ROM] Stock Deodexed 98.16.3 Base

This is a stock, pre-rooted BASE ROM with init.d support baked in. It includes the latest boot.img and radio img. Nothing more, Nothing less. Great base to build from or run as is. Anyone can use this and do whatever they want with it. Please remember to give credit where credit is due!
Speaking of credits...Thanks Mhous33 for the base I made this from!!

Nice job. Debloated version was working smoothly until my M decided to crap out today and now won't boot (it's not rom related). I was in a middle of a call and it just died, Thought it might of been a dead battery but even after charging for 7 hours it won't boot. Anyways I just wanted to say good job.:good:

I would like to try this - however, my lone drawback is that I would love to have the power menu mod (for the ability to reboot and reboot into recovery). Can it be unlocked via developer options (or is that a custom 4.2.2 feature)?
thanks!

I am currently building custom stock based Roms for M and HD. Extended power menu among other cool additions will be included in these. Stay tuned...I will be releasing these builds in a week or so

Got this installed last night! I couldn't stand my car dock locking my phone up, so I went back to (almost) stock with this. I like so far! I had a strange issue with a call today (dialed out, but couldn't hear anything, rebooted and worked fine), otherwise everything is working 100%.

Love that someone is still working off the stock kernels. I hate the bugs on the 4.2.2-4.3 build right now. No fault of the devs of course, darn Moto making this thing hard to develop kernel for....
Links arent active or something.... its not letting me download, its not even doing anything when I put my mouse over the link.

This is by far the smoothest debloated rom I have used, and everything still works (hotspot, clock widget, etc).
Fantastic work.
arrrghhh's kernel works with this rom as well.

What does using arrrghh's kernel do over the installed kernel?

Overclocking/underclocking, different govenors, that kind of stuff. I keep my phone at 1.7ghz and use the lulzactive govenor (set all that in SetCPU). Smooth as silk.

does it improve data connection?
I've never had a problem with my data connection so I cannot speak to that.

Lol, I guess so. but what I meant is that I have not had data/signal issues with any rom and this kernel is no different.
