Apps to SD? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it the norm to move/install apps (that support it) to the SD? I'm thinking moving mine, but does moving disturb anything? Will I be able to update the apps regularly still?
Sorry for the noob question

You can move any App that has the ability to be moved. They will update regularly and you should not have any problems. That being said there are a few Apps out there that will lose some features if moved to the external like the jorte calender when moved to external you will lose the capacity to use the widgets. Hope this helped!

Hm. I use Jorte...I guess I'll leave my widget apps alone just in case.
If I were to change my SD card (for a bigger one) I guess I'd have to move them back to the phone and then back to the new card?

It is my understanding that you would not have to but I am sure that if I am wrong that someone more experienced than me will post a correction. I have taken my sd card out when the phone had been worked on by at&t and the Apps that were on sd still worked

a few catches do exist. you can't create a widget for an app that is on SD. Also some apps don't work reliably when on SD, e.g. sms backup's auto backup feature doesn't work if the app is on SD.

Do you guys have a good app to move apps to SD automatically or at least not 1 by 1

Hi!
I have the App2SD installed but I hate having to go one by one to do this...is there a really easy way like selecting all apps to move and letting it go?
I found Move2SD Enabler but not sure about it.
Titanium backup has a batch option.

Unless you have an enormous amount of apps, moving them to your sd card is really pointless.
I do .....

2.2 move app to SD: not so great? Alternatives anyone?

So the stock "move app to SD" app in 2.2 isn't the greatest. It's selective in the apps it let's you move, and it doesn't move your cache, which sometimes is larger than the program you're tying to move.
I know there's a few different apps to SD programs. From experience, which is best?

Hah! I didnt even see that feature!
Bonus...
Ti backup is best for app2sd.

TiBackup aside, there are several Apps2SD apps on the market. All perform the same basic function, so it would come down to your aesthetic preferences as to which one you like. Before I discovered the feature in Ti, I used MoveToSD
So this may be a dumb question...
Is it pretty much safe then to move any app that is not part of Android to your SD?

Short answer: Yes.
Longer answer: Use one of the many apps2sd apps available to do so.
The only apps that CANT be moved are services, widgets and apps that don't have it compiled in. If you move an app to SD, any widgets will be disabled (if a dev factors this in, they will not enable apps2sd support in their application)
The aforementioned apps2sd apps will take care of the 'can it or can't it?' for you.

Well I have Titanium Back up. When I moved my apps using the built in Apps2SD I got the idea that it was usually apps that used personal information that I could not move to my SD. But when I read above that TiBackup could move apps, I gave it a look. It looks like it can move most of my apps over and double my amount of free space on my phone. So I was just trying to make sure lol.

I tell ya, since we finally got Froyo, I'm less conservative w/ the apps I install now. Stuck on Donut, I'd uninstall this app and that app, to make room for another, then swap back n forth. Rinse. Repeat.
Now I'm only limited by the size of my SD card w00t!

Oh yeah, I went from the stock 1Gb SD card to a class 4 8Gb a while back and felt it was basically useless except to store DVD rips to watch on my phone. Now that I can move my apps to my SD card I am going to go back and look for all the ones I liked but had no room for lol.
I forced all user apps with Titanium to SD. Only lost GMail. Not sure if anyone tried. Tons of room. Any idea why dropbox won't register on Ti? Its installed.

Contacts to SD card

Ughhh.... was realy looking forward to the Contapps version with LinkedIn tapp. It came out and i installed it. Set synchronization on and the LinkedIn contacts started to appear gradualy on my tab. A week later the tab is out of memory and telling me to take action. (Delete contact, calendar or other user data) SMS are being rejected coz no more memory. The app is taking up 10mb of memory and the contacts about 65mb so far but likely to be at least 5-6 times more with all LinkedIn contacts synchronized.
I moved the app and a few other to the SD but cant free up a fraction of what is needed for all the contacts. Anybody know how to move the contacts to the SD card???

Is it really impossible to move my contacts from GT internal memory to SD?
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
just import the contacts to SDCARD ? ?
I need to clear the internal memory of all contacts, importing creates copy on the SD without removal from internal memory.

I just got my 32gb sd card for my gtab ..
Install and reformat accordingly.
Question:
I could see the 32gb sd on setting screen but on other gtab app screens only show the internal sd 16gb instead of external sd 32gb.(figure shows lesser).
Any transfer of app actually goes into internal sd memory.
How to make gtab recognized the 32gb sd?..
I thought this forum popular !...
The tab slowed down so badly on contacs that I had to uninstall the app and do factory reset to clear the 10k contacts. Couldnt figure out how to wipe the contact list. Then added my google acount and before i figured out what was going on 5k contacts got synchronized back to the tab.
Really need some help to manage this without reseting back to factory again. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
So far no clue how to move the contacts to SD card and even if that is possible is there any app capable of handling so many contacts without serious lag?

Maybe if you didnt hijack other peoples threads we would feel like answering you
Uhhhhh, woke up this morning and to my horror again the message that the memory is full. Maybe the extra Skype contacts pushed it over the edge.
Finaly figured out how to clear the thosands of people from the contacts. In Manage Applications found a Contacts Storage app. Went into it and Clear Data. That restores the tab from all sort of force closes back to functional.
Couple things now left to figure out.
* How to move the contacts data to SD card. Stil no clue!!!
* Find an app that can handle 13k contacts without freezing, force closing, going bezerk or coming up with any other wierd unexpected results!!!
I seem to be talking with myself here which probably means that there isnt too many of us lunatics trying to load so many contacts on the cute little tab. Hey even if you dont know but have crazy or untested ideas let me know anyway. I am willing to have a go at it.

My apps are automatically uninstalling!

Apps are all in phone memory. I have 1.5+ available app storage.
Does anyone have a fix to prevent my Droid 3 from uninstalling my apps for no apparent reason?
Try rebooting the phone a few times to see if they come back. I had this problem before with certain apps. Sometimes they wouldn't show up but a reboot often brought them back
xt860, android 2.3.5, Eclipse 1.1.1
Generally only happens when you have apps on the external sd card, a lot of apps default to this when installing or even updating. A restart will fix this as Andoroid said but just move the apps to the internal memory, you may be surprised you still have some on external.

Especially ones with widgets. Widgets don't play well from the sd-ext card.

What are you using to move them? Is this just on stock ROM? Are you rooted? More details, please.

Ok so you're not using an app designed specifically for moving other apps/etc to your SD then. With that being the case you'll need to be very careful in where you're pulling the data from if you expect it to continue functioning as it used to.
You mentioned initially that your moved pictures and videos still show up in the app drawer but are greyed out and say not installed....this is a bit confusing as pictures and videos are usually just single file images or single file video clips and would not ever actually show up in the app drawer and are instead accessed via an app from the app drawer like Gallery or Google Photos, etc. Generally speaking, the apps themselves are usually much smaller than the total amount of space taken up by your videos or (if you have a lot) pictures....you don't even need that many pictures to start adding up to a respectable size if they are all High Quality images.
So, I would recommend you attempt to undo the moves you've made thus far (though if you can't get the apps to show back up as normal then just reinstall them then clean your SD card and internal memory with a junk cleaner) and focus solely on ".img, .png, .mov, .mp3, .gif, .jpeg, .mp4" or any other similarly formatted files if you're doing the moves freely with a root explorer like ES.
If you really want to move your apps over, or at least some of them, try using an app specifically designed for that purpose as this will hopefully ensure they continue to function after the move.....If you're on the stock ROM you should be able to move the apps just by going to Settings > Storage I think or Settings > Apps. One of those two (pretty sure it's storage but I'm on AOSP rom atm so can't check sry) and then click on one of your apps you should get options to Force Quit, Clear Cache, Clear Data then below those you should see a Move to SD option.
Hope this helps! Let me know if I wasn't clear enough or you have further questions^^
No you were very clear I wasn't clear when I said the pictures and videos in the app drawer I should have said from the gallery they where showing up as an empty space Now I believe my card was just going corrupt because it's corrupted now

i have this issue as well. When i transfer files like pictures and music from my internal to my external it says its transferred which is cool but when i reboot the device the files are gone. I have tried the sd card fix apps in the play store and it says its fixed but obviously not. It wont let me format either on the computer or on the phone or it says it does but it actually doesnt. So i have lost all hope on what to do i dont want to buy another card if this is going to happen to it.
