After that tweet from azrienoch this sunday I've started to work on a webapp version of the XDA TV application. It uses WebKit, so in theory Android, iOS, Windows Phone 7, modern desktop browsers, Symbian will handle it correct, if it doesn't please report me the problems/bugs with screenshots(if needed) and a good description.
I've tried to get the app in the App Store, but Apple rejected it

Changelog:
v1.3:
* WebApp released!

Amazing!
Will write about it

Thanks very much for the support

It's darn slow to load the page. Can't run videos.
Expecting updates
It would be nice to have an app for each of the mobile platforms...

This will be great! Right now it doesn't work so good with ie9 wp7 mango. I can't scroll on first page. When I press on one link I only see back button and upper left corner of the movie frame (it's zoomed in I think and I can't scroll). If I press video it starts playing so that is working.
Thanks for sharing, hopefully you can fix it Best of luck!

I'm working on that, the WP7 browser (IE9) has a lot of incompatibilities with WebKit(as usual from Microsoft...)

Its not Microsofts fault.
Its yours.
The webapp only works in WebKit browsers.
It doesn't work very well in any other browser.
Not in Firefox, not in Opera, not in IE.
I have seen some errors in your CSS.
I haven't seen the JS yet.

awsome will download this right away

Ok, WebKit browsers are dominating the mobile market, Android and iOS use them, and latest version of Firefox works with my code, Chrome does too, IE historically has a lot of problems and incompatibilities.
For me what I think is that you never tried to develop web apps for multiple browsers and felt into the nightmare of IE!

I imagine it is much the same as windows mobile...they set some standards and then change their mind and break it all.

Samsung Galaxy S (stock v2.3.3)and XDA TV Dark Edition
Installed it today and seems cannot close it anywhere. Back button doesn't do anything and neither Menu.

What? You can't close a webapp?
EDIT: Ahh, you're talking about the XDA TV app, but at the wrong thread. I'm trying to work around that problem, but it seems to insist. At the time you need to kill the app using a task manager if it's wasting your battery that much.

and you really are wondering why IE has problems?

I am a webdeveolper. I've made a lot of websites and applications.
So id do know how hard i can be to make things work in every browser. Thats whzy i do know that the problem is in your code! I had a look in the html-file and in the css and i have found a few errors.
Maybe something like this could help you: validator.w3.org

It works everywhere except for IE. Those aren't errors, but incompatibility issues with the Microsoft fragmentation in IE.

No. It does not. It isn't working in Opera Mobile on Android.
It doesn't work very well on a desktop firefox and on other desktop browsers.
It work ONLY in webkit browsers.
You can casll it what ever you want. IE (and other browsers) aren't doing anything wrong.
You are using stuff that works only in webkit. So it's not a incompatibility in IE or something.
It's a incompatibility in your webapp.
Use standard HTML, CSS and JS and it should work on IE!

This is having the same problems as the android application. It's not showing any of the more recent videos of the last couple of months.

Sorry, I've been working hard and also trying to completely redesign the XDA TV app so I can't update the feed, but I'll try to do it today.
Sorry

great S/W....iwill try

Just updated the app feed. My hands hurt after copying, pasting and wget'ing all those videos

Excellent.
Perhaps with a few mods we can generate a script directly from the Xda Podcast util.
I think I updated it a while back to generate a python script (to drive the youtube fetching script) from a Youtube user feed. The GUI isn't too obvious as I was quickly seeing if it would work or not, so might see if I can improve it.
Unfortunately I had problems getting python to run on my budget tablet I intended to use with it, so not done any more on it.

im a complete noob at this but I do recall watching a html5 video saying it will support 2 video formats ogg, and i think the other was mp4 but im curious as how you got the html5 and flashlite on your nexus one
Html5 needs to be supported by what ever browser you are using from my understanding. Needs built in support.
HTML 5 is already supported by the most recent version of webkit we have on our N1's. See below

Im wondering if Cyanogen or any of the developers could edit the webkit to get it to work as it is claimed to work with h264 codec. It seems its already there we just need for our browser to recognize. Can someone please help with this? Devs? This would be a huge jump that we would cross and would not have to twiddle our thumbs waiting for Flash..

I did a search and found a kings 2.1 hero rom, but not sure if it's the right one or not. I believe the one I found was for the My Touch.
Also, when installing the flashlite seems to work, but it won't let me install the flashplayer.
Can you provide some insight, pls?
Thanks in advance!

Wow search the forum. Its in the Dream section I found it and installed the flash but doesnt work not sure what browser everyones using or how they called the flash to work but I tried dolphin browser, android browser and steel browser no luck.
any updates on this?
on xscope setting the phone to iPad user agent gives u the HTML5 Gmail site (why the hell is that not available for ALL browsers, mobile or not is beyond me) it works, granted not well due to resolution, but still proof of concept..
The Modaco Desire rom has FlashLite in it. It works very nicely.

if I remember the html5 beta correctly not every video is taking advantage of it yet so you will still get a message saying you need flash installed on a lot of videos, past that it shouldn't ask you for flash when viewing anything in html5 and right now html5 video is probably not supported in android browser.

CNN Mobile
Hello everyone, I am looking for feedback on my apps I created. Here is my first app. Please comment here and if you enjoy it please leave feedback on the actual review for the marketplace. Price is .99 however I offer an fully function ad supported version as a trial. It only nags the first launch it ever does. The ads are removed after purchase. Please let me know. Also this app is under attack on the marketplace by competition you will notice the first 4 posts are all 1 and are by competition (I have verified this with microsoft however they will not remove them).

I tried your app and posted a good comment. Can't really low star you anyways your description says exactly what the app is. BTW it looks like your competition is flaming you with their own app.
just downloaded your app. it looks pretty neat. will leave a good review!
no problem
I will put feed back
Hey,
I just checked out your app. It's nice and quick way to view the CNN mobile webpage. I do have one question, what's the real advantage of using your app compared to just pinning the CNN Mobile homepage to the startscreen?
Btw, I used this website to check on your reviews: ttp://wp7reviews.tomverhoeff.com/AppReviews.aspx?id=cfe3f2e2-db08-e011-9264-00237de2db9e
Looks like the positive reviews are coming through. I won't review you, although i like the concept of the app i agree with some of the review that paying for just a webbrowsercontrol is kind of silly. If you offered it for free it would be 5 stars.
Thank you guys, I really appreciate it. Well the advantage to using my website is not alot of people actually know the mobile site by heart, and my app shows more of the screen than the internet explorer. Also my app shows an icon that goes a little more with the overall design element of the windows phone 7. That's why I'm offering it at .99C plus if you want to just continue using the trial for free it can be the update does have an ad that will support me and there will be no nag screen except during the very first launch if people just want to use the trial. In all honesty i prefer my NewsPaper 7 app. It's got about 14 websites in it and the ability to add two of your own.
Hey,
Just checked your NewsPaper 7 app, to be honest i think that's what should be called your first app since it really ads functionality. It's a really quick way of accessing the mobile webpages.
Btw, just wondering. Are you using ads from MS Ads SDK? How are the results, do you see any good eCPM?

Well, CNN Mobile was what I wanted when I first got it so thats what i started with. NewsPaper 7 is what ended up being kind of a mix of ideas and I did not want to flood the market w/ 1.29 or .99 apps. So I created one I could price at 2.99 then drop to 1.99..1.29...then .99 once my sales went up. The NewsPaper7 app started as an idea one morning and was done that night, the results are very pleasing and what I'm actually using on my phone. I am considering cross platforming this app into the blackberry tablet however I need to look more into that SDK prior to launch.
Yes the ads are from the MS SDK, if you do financial ads like I have the eCPM is averaging between 60-200$ per 1000. It seems the more ads you display the more it goes down. So I am still trying to tweak the right combination.
My CNN App is suppose to have the bug fixes and the back hardware button work correctly, the update is accepted its just Microsoft has declined every version # in between. And since the two apps were developed side by side the version number once it hits the marketplace jumps from 1.0 to 1.4.
NewsPaper 7? I can't find it using the Zune software on my PC... Is that the actual name?
zune looks to not be finding it under that tag for some reason try news paper 7, or just follow this direct link http://bit.ly/dR5L7B I have also now added direct links to zune on both apps.
I left a good review for you since I quite like it. I'm from Canada, and I'm the first to leave a rating, so hopefully this helps out.
Thank you. I honestly hate how the market is segregated by nationality. It should be segregated by language instead. If you haven't purchased it you should try NewsPaper 7. It does more websites than the CNN Mobile. The trial version will run for ever on the NewsPaper 7.

[Discussion] what's better Firefox or Google chrome

I believe that the Firefox Google chrome update has been going on for quite some time and I think we should try and settle it once and for all. Personally I prefer Firefox cause of the anonymousX plugin that allows me to bypass the networks firewall.

Word wrap complaints in Kit Kat?

I'm surprised not a lot of people are complaining about this.
I switched to Kit Kat (CM11) on my Nexus 4. Everything was working out perfectly. Some features that were in 10.2 were not there, but no biggie; I figured it takes time to port everything.
Then, I opened my browser (Dolphin HD), and noticed that word wrap was not working. Odd.
So I tried Firefox. No word wrap. Getting pissed at this point. So I try AOSP (built in browser). Still no go. Word wrap ONLY works in Opera (of course), with the word wrap option enabled.
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=62378
Googling it, it looks like Google actually regressed instead of progressed. How the heck do you take something as fundamental as word wrapping and remove support for it from the OS in the name of "progress"? If you read the bug thread on Google, they claim it's "WAI", which is Working As Intended.
Please.
This user put it best.
Are you google people purposely pretending not to understand the problem? Is this some diversionary tactic to avoid acknowledging that you've broken something?
One more time just in case you really don't understand. We are talking about TEXT WRAPPING. In the old browser when you zoom a page to a legible size, the text reflows so that you don't have to scroll from side to side. Saying that it "works as intended" is saying "yes, we removed a vital feature for no reason, too bad".

This is actually a deal breaker for me, so I simply restored a nandroid of CM10.2, and everything works great.
What do you guys think about this? Again, I'm slightly taken aback that not more people are complaining about this. It's sort of a fundamental thing in mobile OS acceptance.
Hey man, I'm sorry you miss that feature. Text reflow on zoom like how it used to work really broke a lot of webpages. The chrome browser is pretty smart with its auto-zoom by double tap, but it won't reflow the text fields.
I'm sorry that it messed up your use case so badly, but I'm glad that we have root on our phones and can load the software that works best for us. FWIW, I think the Opera Android browser is pretty serviceable compared to Dolphin HD, which is also not a bad browser.

You mean like text reflow? Dolphin with Jetpack does that although not every single webpage supports it.

Yes that's what the OP was saying. A lot more browsers use to do this including stock before the KK update.
Doesn't bother me so much as a small screen isn't good for web browsing at the best of times, it does however seem a step backwards from Google though.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk
Text reflow does come with some chaos though, flicking a bit upon each zoom and resetting, dolphin always seemed to be the most stable doing it. It's also the all-around most feature rich AND fluid browser out there, especially on ART.
I agree that word wrap/text reflow implmentation on Android isn't perfect, but it's almost essential to browsing on devices like ours.
Dolphin has Jetpack integrated by default for KitKat. I can confirm that even though this is the case, and that Jetpack is explicitly enabled in Dolphin browser settings, it does not work at all. Zooming in then double tapping simply zooms out to the extent of the largest content (text or images) displayed on the screen. Doing the same thing (zooming in, then double tapping) on previous Android OSes (Jelly Bean, etc.) forces a word wrap.

Best web browser to use?

I think it would have to be either NetSurf or a terminal browser, like links, w3m, lynx or elinks. Firefox is a sinking ship and so is any forks of it and Chrome is obviously not safe, but the best fork of it would be Ungoogled-Chromium, which even then that's not saying it's foolproof, because of the massive codebase that comes with Chromium and the fact that Google is still being supported by proxy. Pale Moon is starting to head in the wrong direction also, and smaller projects like Otter Browser and Suckless Surf, while promising, suffer from small dev teams, little to no addon support and lack their own engines and instead rely on Goooooogle and Crapple instead. But even then, you would have to wean yourself off of the modern web and stick to websites like neocities or wiby.me if you were to use stuff like NetSurf or elinks.
Also, what about email? I'd try RiseUp or Disroot w/ GPG encryption using the Claws webmail client w/ KeePassX or KeePassXC for generating email passwords stored on a removable drive. Although I heard self-hosting is also decent. Which is better?

You're welcome. Welcome to XDA
Samsung is good for vids if you add some ad blockers from the Galaxy store. Just mind the download folder for unauthorized downloads.
Had a trojan preloader slip by Samsung somehow. It died in that folder
When in doubt try to back out of a bad website, if that fails close the browser tab, if that fails close the browser. If all that fails clear cache. If nothing gets it go full nuke and clear browser data. For over 2 years nothing has made it in again... I check the download folder at least once a day nonetheless.
Brave gets tarded with vids on the borders and I like multiple browsers anyway. The Samsung browser I have more configured for streaming vids. Brave is better for surfing, it's pretty much bullet proof; nothing has ever slipped by it.
My Brave browser has over a hundred open tabs, it don't care

You're welcome. Welcome to XDA
Samsung is good for vids if you add some ad blockers from the Galaxy store. Just mind the download folder for unauthorized downloads.

Thank you for all your help, I'll be sure to remember that process in case I fall into a hole like that again.
Lol.

I'm spilling black coffee as I post
I feel a thread merge a-coming. Or post like the sharks fed; thread frenzy! Or like free ranging long horns graze... those other browser threads were getting like bathroom wallpaper anyway.
