[SOLVED] Stuck on X - HELP!? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ADDING THE LINK HERE NOW : https://www.dropbox.com/s/it4ji9mlohfgagf/NexusOne-rescue-tools.zip
And please, a THANKS would be great if this helped you.
For some reason the phone one day just didn't boot. Was stuck on X logo.
We have tried alot... can't get into recovery, so flashed custom recovery, both RA and CWM... can't get into any of them, just stuck on X.
The phone was stock, and unrooted.
We managed to unlock bootloader via fastboot and root it.
Tried the PASSIMG.ZIP method - not working.
Any ideas?
.... please? =(
EDIT: Problem solved! Send me a PM if you're in the same seat, and i could send you all the files you need.
Oh, all you need is your FASTBOOT to work, no need for ADB, since it didn't work for me either.
EDIT #2:
The reason is that i have a file (ADB, and all the *.img's) needed on my server, and don't wanna post the link here so that's why i have done it thru PM.
But i'll update the first post and just delete the link, so when anyone needs it they can PM me.
So far (2012-02-10) 14 phones confirmed back up running, including mine. Got 2 unconfirmed, and just sent 5 PM's to guys with the same problem.
*** PM ME FOR THE LINK TO THE *.ZIP ***
Unzip, open an command promt, and:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot flash radio radio.img
fastboot flash system system.img
do the commands in that order, and when you are done reboot the phone
and see if it boots.
if NOT: keep on flashing ONLY the boot.img again and again until it
boots. it seems like the boot partition is corrupted and may need alot
of flashing until it works.
i think i flashed like 100 times before it booted. =)
There is also another recovery in that zip... RA's recovery. You can also try that one, no harm done!
Once you get it to boot, you will have FroYo 2.2 installed.
If you got it to boot with recovery.img just let android update to latest (2.3.7?)
If you have RA's recovery, just flash back recovery.img or you wont be able to upgrade to 2.3.7 "the stock way"

How do i find out?
When we searched yesterday (google), we found some ppl who had fixed it, now i can't find those pages again..
So anyone here who knows what to try?

I've been in a similar situation before and just kept fastboot flashing system, recovery, and boot, and eventually I recovered the phone...

I assume since you mentioned that you unlocked the bootloader, that you can get into fastboot? If so, flash a custom recovery (I'd recommend CWM since it includes an option to wipe the system partition) and boot into it.
Code:
fastboot flash recovery "c:\location\to\recovery.img
fastboot boot recovery "c:\location\to\recovery.img
If you can get that far, wipe your /system partition and do a factory reset. Then install CM7 (or whatever ROM you want) and gapps.

Thanks!
But we have tried to fastboot system.img, boot.img and recovery.img
Still stuck on X.
Is that code any different perhaps?
I can't try that now, that's why i ask instead of try it =)

All the commands that I posted are supposed to do is install a custom recovery and then boot into it. From recovery, you need to wipe your device by wiping the /system partition and doing a Factory Reset/Data Wipe. Then install whatever ROM you want to.
I've never tried using fastboot to install the system image, so I can't comment on that at all.

O M G!!!
i actually got the phone up and running!! everything is working now, i'm just too awesome
If anyone is interested, i could find out what i did, and which files i flashed, etc etc.

Is it an illegal method, or is there another reason why a fix like this you're only sharing by PM instead of posting it here? I sent you a PM over 24hrs ago and haven't heard back yet. I would think making one helpful post would be much easier than getting irritated at replying to each of 10-100+ PMs

[Q] Stuck in fastboot in bootloader! cant get to system or recovey! HELP! URGENT!

Hi ,this is very upsetting for me because I just got the HTC One today and I already managed to mess it up. First I unlocked the bootloader then I rooted it then I got s-off then they try to install this ROM: android revolution HD. So I went thru the installation prosses. And did a wipe dalvic cach. And tried to boot it, but instead it took me to the bootloader! I tryed to reboot.. but again bootloader. And within that it puts me in fastboot. I can't get into twrp recovery or boot to system. I'm stuck. Please help!!!!!! (P.s. It just came in the mail today! My dad got it for me as a gift. He told me not to mess around with Roms... But I didn't listen.. so the fact that I bricked it I'm trying to hide till I hopefully find a way to fix it. So please help fast!!!!!!) Thanks
You could try to flash cwm recovery via fastboot.
First you need to have the cwm.img on your computer.
Then you need to set up fastboot (google it I cant remember it exactly).
Then open cmd and type this: \fastboot
This should get you: C:/fastboot (if it doesnt google it.. It is explained somewhere)
Then you flash the recovery img with this command: fastboot flash recovery nameofyourrecovery.img (make sure the recovery.img is on your C: drive.
Then the recovery is flashed you need to get back to the bootloader (if it doesnt boot automatically) with the command fastboot reboot bootloader. Then select recovery and boot into it. Flash your ROM and youre done!
Pm me if you neef more help.

Hello guys, I really messed up my phone.
I was trying to relock, and unroot my phone but it didnt go as planned.
Long story short, I cannot flash ANYTHING through CWM or TWRP (latest versions) and none of my files shows up in either of these recoveries. When i push a file through adb i get an error code on both. I believe that CWM said it cannot mount E:/SD Card.
I also have nothing to bootup to (bootloop)
I really need my phone and any help would be greatly appreciated!

Nothing is showing up in Twrp or CWM its like i have nothing installed on my device. I have a constant bootloop with the cm10.2 boot animation.
I believe it all started going crazy when i tried to go back to stock and wipe the data (i did a factory reset from hboot as well as cwm)

Okay well that rules out the simple.
Now lets see if i understand the situation correctly. If you try to boot into system all you get is a CM bootloop and custom recovery's show an empty sdcard? You say adb commands dont work but have you tried fastboot commands in fastboot mode yet?
Try:
fastboot devices
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot-recovery
Dude - he's done a factory reset from the bootloader which has wiped his virtual sd card. You basically need to format it back into a fat32 partition so the adb side load will work.

So what do I have to do sorry
I've done this before a long time ago now myself and was able to fix it because I could still boot into my rom and windows would offer to format it for me.
There used to be a guide in the One XL forum with a step by step even a youtube how to fix it - just trying to find it now.

It's for a One XL but the principle is the same as they both use Virtual SD Cards.
Make sure you're in the bootloader go into fastboot
Download the stock recovery from this link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/v7byetxqc2ogzqq/recovery144.img
Make sure the downloaded image is in the same folder as your fastboot.
fastboot flash recovery recovery144.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Go into bootloader and then choose Factory Reset - let that finish running
Go into fastboot
fastboot flash recovery <custom recovery>.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Now you can go into recovery and try sideloading a rom and then flashing it.

Hey dude, don't forget to put [Resolved] in the thread title.

[Q] How can I reinstall a good image after flashing my boot with CWM?

My question is similar to 'nikpmr's troubles but different enough I think they deserve a separate post.
The Problem as UnderstoodI was trying to root my device following the guide at this website. It's so simple it's a wonder I messed up. I think my failure was that I thought the drivers installed when I connected the phone were enough so I skipped that step. Then when running fastboot flash recovery.img the install failed. So I saw on some forum that it was supposed to be fastboot flash boot recovery.img of course now I know if anything it ought to have been "recovery" not "boot".
What I've Tried & Partial SolutionAt first I was just stuck in a boot loop and selecting "sideload" from the CWM recovery failed to allow me to connect with ADB or fastboot. i.e. Running "fastboot devices" and "adb devices" both returned as having no devices connected to my computer. So I installed the HTC Sync and promptly uninstalled the non driver parts of the app. Then I installed USBdeview and used it to uninstall all the USB devices associated with my HTC First. After doing that I learned booting into HBOOT allowed me to connect to the computer using fastboot and after then booting to the CWM Recovery I was able to connect using ADB to do a sideload. So I guess I'm about halfway there. Unfortunately after looking up the newest RUU and attempting to sideload it using "adb sideload OTA_MYST_UL_1.08.502.1-1.08.502.4.zip" the sideload failed. After selecting "- install zip from sideload" I get a message twice of "failed to open driver control: No such file or directory". It also failed when I attempted it with a similar fastboot command. So from all that I surmise my ROM is ruined and just needs to be replaced.
QuestionSo how do I go about replacing this ROM and boot partition? And, which ROM should I use? Is the one I got from the RUU site suitable? And what about the radio? I just need my phone to work. I can worry about rooting later. At this point I think I know what's happened but I don't know where to begin reading to figure out how to fix it myself.
Thanks for reading,

1. you had to type in fastboot flash recovery recovery.img NOT fastboot flash boot recovery.img
Well there was an actual all in 1 tool to get cwm/twrp & root with a click for this specific device somewhere around these threads.
1) what exactly is the problem? (Sorry it was just so many words)
I don't think side loading the RUU would work bc I haven't heard its possible to flash it in the phone itself.
2) why don't you just sideload an existing pre-rooted ROM instead of the RUU file?
3) I see you're s-on, did you try flashing just the boot.IMG from the ROM you've got on it?
BTW I've only had luck with twrp on having it successfully detected when wanting to sideload

1) The issue is I did "fastboot flash boot recovery.img" rather than "fastboot flash recovery.img" now I don't seem to have a boot mount point.
2) That sounds best. I didn't realize the RUU want a flashable ROM. More I just have to find the updated stable stock ROM.
3) I didn't have a ROM on it. I was just trying to root stock. Seems like I'm pretty close once I find that ROM.
Thanks y'all! Between your answers I think I have enough to go on. Feel free to point me to your preferred stable ROM. I'm content with stock but it would be nice to have Tiranium BU.

Right now our most stable stock ROM is our rooted stock ROM

We currently have 2 very able recognized devs working on CyanogenMod. You can expect something new in the near future but until then what I've showed you is the best.

Thanks guys I know I always like to know when something I said was successful in helping someone. I just wanted yall to know after sideloading the most recent Odexed ROM then pushing it to memory after it wouldn't boot I succeeded after taking abrahammmmmm's advice of flashing the boot.img from HBOOT. After a longer boot than I'm used to I was able to get into my phone again. I wasn't able to use my TitaniumBU to restore but that just meant I had to spend a few minutes selecting apps to install.. And restoring a data backup for the only important app that doesn't keep the primary data off the phone.
Thanks again!
tl;dr Flashing the Odexed ROM boot.img fixed my issues. Thx!

Thx!

i think what happened, when you typed in "fastboot flash boot recovery.img" is this
boot, is also known as kernel in aosp and rom building terms, because if you look inside a rom.zip, you will see that the kernel is the boot.img
so what happened is you flashed a recovery as kernel, and duh it wont boot cause if the kernel doesnt work, the os doesnt either
so what YOU did is you simply reflashed the stock kernel, usually after changing a kernel, it takes a while to boot cause...well you get it right?
the kernel is what android is based off of, kind of like ubuntu, its a linux os based on the original linux kernel.

That's what I thought happened. If I had stopped to read the help on fastboot before running "fastboot flash boot recovery.img" I wouldn't have made that mistake because I would have seen I wanted to flash recovery. One thing I *did not* know, which I'm glad to know, was that the boot.img contains the kernal. I was thinking Android was more similar to IBM style PCs than it is and therefore the boot.img was analogous to a bootloader like grub or lilo.
So the one thing I don't get is how is partitioning done? I take it Androids have some reserved partition for boot and the boot.img takes care of all system partitioning and mounts /sdcard/ for everything else. i.e. userland; appdata, media, and files. Am I guessing correctly?

in a nutshell yes, the boot.img uses the fstab
btw 10 posts you'll be "verified"

Yep that's correct.
The name correlation is booting up requires kernel there for kernel is called beet.IMG
Thing about custom kernels, they aren't like that and simply contain modded files and pretty much an in packaged kernel.

[Q] Help: Can't get to recovery or system?!?!?

Hi, Gang... Please be patient as I'm not normally playing at this level...
I recently had a kid kill my TF700 so I bought at TF701 as a replacement. I immediately unlocked it, forgetting to take the latest Asus update OTA beforehand. Anyways, I manually downloaded v11.4..1.17 and put it on a blank microSD and stuck it into the tablet where the update was recognized as available and I set the update in motion... Something went sideways after I walked away to let the update run and now I can't get back into the system and I can't get into recovery.
I have the bootloader up (1.00e as released by 10.14.1.47) and I can communicate with the device via fastboot. Can someone help me wipe and get a recovery.img and/or a full stock image onto this thing. Right now it just keeps rebooting unless I manually force it to the bootloader.
I'm hoping someone more knowledgeable can chastise me for being a moron an point me in the right direction. Ultimately, I was tying to get to the latest ASUS ROM to the the bootloader that goes with it and then move onto a custom ROM.
Many thanx.
Im no help. Dont listen to me. Try using fastboot to run a recovery. "fastboot boot recovery.img" from the bootloader. Maybe with that old bootloader you should be using an old recovery maybe.
---------- Post added at 08:27 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:19 PM ----------
I wouldnt flash a recovery/bootloader especially the new ones til you can verify an older recovery works. Try booting this one https://www.dropbox.com/s/il2m4rtxlmzjfz9/recovery.img but dont flash til someone else takes a look at this. This is an old philz touch without touch.
Still nothing...

I'm really starting to get frustrated... (understatement)
I've got a copy of the 4.4.2 OTA image (zip and recovery.img). Should I not be able to use ADB to copy the image to the device and then boot the recovery.img? I can get the tablet to respond to fastboot but I can't get it to be recognized by ADB.
I've never had issues with custom ROMs before. This time I'm wading into unfamiliar waters. I'm note even sure how the initial update failed. Is there a way for me to update the bootloader, then add a CWM recovery, then load the ROM?
Again sorry to have to ask but any help would greatly be appreciated.

Where did you get the full firmware update you tried to flash?
I can't find a recovery that is compatible with that old bootloader, so your best bet would be to update via Asus firmware.
What happens if you choose RCK in the bootloader menu? Is the stock recovery still working?
What's your SKU?
If the manual stock update doesn't work you may have to flash the system blob in fastboot, but answer above questions first and then we'll see.
If you're getting frustrated, stop and come back to it later. Don't do anything desperate! No reason for it yet.

download this recovery(which is an older one compatable with that bootloader and try fastboot boot recovery.img from your older bootloader.
It should work. If you can determine that it works and all your partitions are intact. The command is" fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" I would think if you can simply get this one to boot it will be ok to flash and you should be able to flash whatever you want. Namely you will want to flash the new bootloader and recovery from the flashable zip that sbdags provides from his optimized asus stock.
If you have to adb sideload a rom from within the recovery. Then download just use the cm11 rom for now because the asus stock is over a gig and and might not sideload. the asus stock sbdags provides in this forum.
Otherwise you might be able to flash things from the microsd card.
Than if you decide to go the cm11 route. just download the asus stock from this forum from inside the rom. Be careful.

Managed to fastboot to the older recovery.img. As per instructions, I then flashed the latest bootloader and recovery from sbdags. I'm now good to go with whatever ROM I want. Many thanx! I'd still like to know how the upgrade to the latest Asus update screwed up. I wasn't watching it after setting the update in motion so it's a mystery. All I know is that the unit was plugged in so it wouldn't run out of juice and when I came back to check it, it wouldn't boot to Android, I couldn't get to recovery, and it would just keep rebooting in a loop.
Lucky for me it was unlocked and I had fastboot access to the (albeit out-of-date) bootloader.
All good now. Cheers.

Good to hear. For the Asus updates you just put them in /sdcard and reboot dont you? Its fairly automatic wasnt it? Then unlock after being updated? What went wrong in your case, Hard for me to say i guess because I and others unlocked at or before 4.3.

thats correct these are via ADB mfastboot (which ignores OTA fingerprint check) as flashes full firmware, not the ota.zip which is only a smaller (not full firmware) update
ota.zip is NOT full firmware, so will not fix a corrupted / altered or non stock firmware
but you say you've flashed many roms.... you need to be on correct rom and matching recovery and also un-rooted to flash a OTA.zip as it checks Recovery version and the build fingerprint inside /system folder of original stock rom. if any of these mismatch it will fail.
also (apologies if wrong) but dont you believe your phone to be corrupted or read only hence why you cant flash images?

Phone wont boot, its gets to the point where a blue m apears the goes to a blank screen, when flahing a rom via fasboot, all seems to get right but after restart is like nothing happened, i go back to the same state, same thing happens with twrp or philz, if you want to help, we can continue here but your more then wellcome to read this (nevermind i see you allready did)
So let me make a backup of twrp and see if i can post results, thanks allot, iveen waiting to fix this for so many days now.
A bit of background, i consider myself an advance user, someone that can google problems and fix stuff with it, ivee flashed alot of cellphones in the past ,many xt1064 and other models, just like everybody ealse, easy and no problems, but this one i just cant figure out. Seems like its on read only mode or freezed as a deepfreezed computer, dont mater how many roms i flash and the way i do, everything comes back to the same state, even if i reforma partitions, eeven if i delete pictures or folders, they come back once i reboot.
Its going to take 5hrs to upload my backup

ok ii'm thinking corrupted partitions too.... but if you are willing to try i've made a xt1063 easy installer script for you to try now normally i work on xt1068 and would test on my xt1068 - so have NO xt1063 its UNTESTED - use at own risk.....
just stock firmware / drivers / adb and mfastboot ( same as my xt1068 script) I see no reason it should not be compatible.
download to pc / unzip to folder / read instruction inside
https://mega.co.nz/#!Tok2DJ6T!ggMoQDfAzuA7cmQQjbGCbXolWZTnx_567vG02CiURVsxt1063 4.4.4 easy installer
I repeat it YOUR choice - if it works- great - if runs ok but rom remains same would suggest somethings corrupt - if it doesnt work at all back to square 1....
now im presuming your boot loader is unlocked, as will fail if locked or relocked - if you use and get error please report what they are, i would have done 5.0.2 but its only 50% downloaded with a 1 hr+ to still go, estimate 2 hrs from time of this post until I can post a link
im uploading the backup, in the mean time i dont know if this is of any use ,its the recovery log zipped...

will look but cant promise
I tried your easy install tool, brand new drivers, diferent usb port, all went smooth but after restart, im at the same situation. Funny thing, and ivee done this multiple times, after reflashing a new rom, most of them never give errors, then after nothing happens , i flash twrp and boot it, and all the files (the original ones , not the just flashed ones) are there intact, even pictures and music.

ok have you tried mfastboot erase userdata and mfastboot erase cache? from a command window?
i.m interested in the I flash twrp and boot..... does this mean you are able to replace recovery with a custom recovery ON phone
rather than temporary booting into it?

Yeah i tried those erase commands many many times and same result, i cant replace recovery at all, only boot of it, so when i do " mfastbooot flash recovery twrprecovery.img " then try to boot of recovery, i boot into factory recovery not, twrp, but if i do, "mfasboot boot twrprecovery.img" i can see the recovery img gets flashed and the phone boots of twrp. Weird behavior. So when i notice that i tried to flash a rom with mfastboot, and at the end i gave the command mfasboot boot recovery.img (the original rom recovery) then it gets flashed, and phone reboots, but i gets stuck at the motorola logo. This phone its playing hard to get....
heres, my backup https://mega.co.nz/#!md0AwbLR!uWe9PLklIugOziPLV6O_plbU-Zz9EXbqRvUVpYxECk0 hope you can find something.
Im going to take this phone to a shop to see if they can fix it as i have lost all hope, thanks refuuge for your help.
