Bluetooth Tether works OOB with Win7!

FYI, since this is a big reason to need root... I got Bluetooth tethering to work out of the box on Windows 7. Heres to hoping todays(?) patch that contains blutooth "fixes" doesn't break it.
I thinkyou will get charged for that

Not an app. From what I understand you turn on Bluetooth on your cell phone and laptop and connect them and your computer will think it's linked to an access point.

Can someone confirm or deny if vzw can tell if you're tethered or they think its just regular phone data usage?

Yes, they can tell. [Q] reverse tethering

So my hero's service was turned off. I'm unable to pay it for a few weeks. So I'm trying to see if there was a way to share my computer internet with my hero. I don't have a router. So basically is there a way to wire tether only in reverse.

Just use wifi... or if you have a mac I know you can "tether" it
Thats the promblem I don't have a wireless router. So I don't have a wifi signal to pick up.

Look for something like "sharing internet connection via USB" or something similar.

Tethering?

I'm running a 2.3.3 stock, rooted deodyxed(sp) nexus one and I was would wondering what apps are out there that would let me tether?
Thanks in advance.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA Premium App
ummmmm the stock rom has this built-in.... I thought.
Settings>Wireless&Network>Tether&portable hotspot
Yeah stock android has tethering built into the OS. Up to 8 devices I believe, or close.
So that won't require me to pay through ATT? Could anyone elaborate?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA Premium App
Yes
yes you don't need to pay the carrier i got t-mo and I use tethering all the time. It works great or download barnacle for creating a wifi hotspot, thats better.

I think this isn't entirely true. The carriers have some control over this, and AT&T recently changed their tethering policy. That might mean you can't tether without the proper account.
The carriers can't control tethering. They can attempt to charge for it, though, using various methods of detecting you tethering.
That's what I'm thinking about; because I bought this phone from someone here and the line is still registered to a Capptivate, how could they know if I'm tethering or not?
I would have increased upload ans download usage but... other than that how could they know?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA Premium App
That, to me, is a form of control, and what I meant.
I don't know if they do this, but theoretically, it could be built into the system to know when packets are the result of tethering. More likely, is that it is built into the phone software by the carrier, and so the N1 wouldn't be subject to this because the carrier doesn't have control over that.

I see everyone is using the term "tethering" to mean your phone sharing its internet connection via Wi-Fi? I guess the definition has changed -- to me, tethering was always using your phone as a dial-up modem, i.e., using a dial-string to connect to the internet, no? For example, using BT DUN (which is advantages, as you can keep your phone in your pocket and initiate an internet connection right from the computer, although I have yet to see an implementation of this on Android). In this case, carriers can tell. For example, with Rogers, the dial string is *99# so they can tell if you are using data over that versus using data on device via the normal APN.
Yes, I believe the most of the reference for "tethering" is changed from "legacy" reference - it's either USB or WiFi tether, and in both you don't actually use the phone as a modem to establish a connection, but use its own connectivity and share the access to it.

I guess I need to catch up with the times! To me what your describing was internet connection sharing, not tethering... I guess my age is starting to show!

PSA 4.3 OTA breaks wifi tether

Wifi tether will no longer start up if you apply the 4.3 OTA. If anyone relies on wifi tether just be warned
I have tried the other tether options available and so far no luck with any of them. If you have tethering as part of your plan or use a custom rom you are most likely ok but stock rooted 4.3 seems to be broken at the moment
any ideas?
You have tethering on your plan?
People still do this?

no, per my previous post if you have tethering as part of your plan you should be fine, I usually tether about twice a year and used the wifi tether app in the past but its not working with 4.3 as of yet

I just figured with the advancements in smartphones, there's less of a need to carry a laptop with you away from a network.
And there's WiFi just about everywhere now.

This includes using the wireless tether app?
Wifi tether only works if you are rooted. So if you took the OTA 4.3 update, you are not rooted anymore and Wifi tether will not work.

I can confirm that this is accurate. I've uninstalled/reinstalled the app and it doesn't work; it stalls starting up. Other rooted apps that I have are working. I guess I'll just wait for an update.

WiFi and USB theter do not work
Hello
WiFi and USB theter do not work any longer.
My stock device had WiFi and USB theter working before with the onboard tools out of the box.
After this update both stop working.
I can connect to the device but it will not pass me throug to the internet.
PDAnet (which I still own from the past) is working as USB theter.
Hope there will be a fix out soon as this looks like an error.

FoxFi or Wifi tether on Turbo with lollipop 5.1?

Hi, can someone please see if FoxFi USB or Wifi tether works on 5.1 update? Or if native wifi tether can be made to work, which I assume it wont since root is needed. Does FoxFi work?

AFAIK, 5.1 has a built-in check to see if you have tethering provisioned on your plan.
Edit: Also, if you have one of the newer data plans, tethering is included, I think.

WiFi tether will not work whether you use the native app or any 3rd party apps like foxfi. I haven't tried USB tether yet, but it worked on kit kat before root was available.

Yes, I am on 5.1 and USB tethering is working, now if there's a limit I don't know; I'm unable to test at this current time
EDIT: I should clarify that I am on an Unlimited Data plan, which means I am NOT paying for the Mobile Hotspot. When I started the FoxFi USB Tether, the only thing it asked me was to install the PdaNet+ program and everything worked as expected!
