What Improvements Would You Like To See? - LG Thrill 4G

These are a few of the improvements I would like to see:
1) Gingerbread.
2) Longer battery life.
3) Email program that the auto sync actually works.
4) Swype to work properly in the email app.
5) To be able to change all 4 of the quick shortcuts at the bottom.
6) Status light of some sort.

That pretty much summs it up.
Maybe ICS

I too would love for an ota update to give a status light on the phone. There us already an app in the O3D forum that works pretty well to light up the capacitive buttons. You can choose different types of blinking for different notifications, and it can keep the lights on with the screen, and had an option to disable at night (those capacitive lights blinking in the middle of the night can be distracting)
AT&T has promised a GB update, I would expect it sooner rather than later. With the Thrill being new I think it would be one of the first to get the update over phones that are closetto end of life. My hopes are that the GB build solves most issues. I only use gmail, so I don't know about the email problem, and I didn't like swype, so I don't know the issue there either. The battery life has been on par with my Captivate and iPhone 3GS before that, so I am used to not lasting longer than a day with 6 hours Pandora, occasional texting, and browsing, and constant Bluetooth connection.

Touchpal is a swyping keyboard, and it works great on gmail and exchange.

Do you know the name of that app for the capacitive touch lights?

The version that works for the Thrill (and O3D) is altered from the version on the market. Its in the O3D app forum. The thread is called Optimus 3D led notifications I think. Its on page two using the android app. Its not perfect, but works most of the time. It requires root, and immediate reboot when you first launch it. Sometimes on a reboot it wont work the first time you unlock. If I lock and unlock again it generally works.

LOL. Google Google's IO show this year. They touched on ICS and had some very promising news about working with phone manufacturers and directly with the US carriers to deliver timely updates.

Is there a way we can get RenderFx?

While checking droiddog and watching the cyanogen 6 for the evo video and he used a widget called render fx, do we have a widget like this or is it possible for someone to port it?

i know hurts my eyes looking at it. supposed to give excellent battery life though.
no it does not, i ran a test (its in the general section) because of the "render" it slows your phone down considerably and wastes cpu cycles ergo negating any battery life you would have saved (if you had an oled screen), but since we have an lcd screen EVERY pixel is lit up regardless if its in use or not. i had 29 hours with almost no use, people on here get longer then that with a bit of use...
TL: DR slows your phone down, does make it look cool if your into that, but it doesnt save battery from what ive seen
I would love this app and I dont care if it kills my battery. The green is nice for using screen at night. Better then white screen at night. So do we have a answer where can we get it? Running droidX.
If you are using CM6, it is in Settings > Cyan Settings > Render effect.
You can also add a render fx widget to your home screen. Add it like any other widget.

You're right. The whole idea of showing only one color exploits the technology of OLED and its ability to only light up pixels on demand. LCD works by having the entire backlight always on, with polarizers selectively attenuating the light appropriately for each pixel. That's why LCD cannot achieve true black like OLED, and that's why OLED contrast ratio tests destroy LCD.
Since our Hero has the latter technology, this has absolutely no positive effects for us. Don't use it unless you like less colors.
So I have torn apart most of cyanogenmod's roms and settings trying to find this. So if anyone has it please upload that would be awesome

Does the THRILL have a notification light??

I am getting two THRILLs in the mail on Saturday.
I have an ATRIX, an INSPIRE, and a STATUS [opened 3 lines in store and 2 lines online]
The Status is not for me nor is the Inspire
but the ATRIX feels solid [tegra dual core like the G2X, but with a notification light and MUCH better battery life]
I am excited about the thrill though, the dual core omap is a monster and I hear the dual channel RAM is not a gimmick but a real edge
My only problem is, DOES THRILL HAVE NOTIFICATION LIGHT?
I know the optimus 3d doesn't, who here with a THRILL in hand knows whether it has the light or not?
Notification light
This is the only feature that I wish this phone had, but to answer your question no it doesn't. I figure it's only a matter of time till someone creates a mod that will turn the 4 buttons down at the bottom into a notification lights, as was done with the i think the hd2 not sure but it's one of the older phones that I use to have.
Don't let this stop you from getting this phone, I have had a lot of phones this is the first one that I have had that I am happy with and it doesn't even have a rom on it yet, can't wait to see what comes out in the way of roms.
Its true this phone is so awesome it doesnt need one... Haha but if you look in the optimus 3d thread under thwmes and apps I believe, there is an app that lets you use the 4 capacitive touchscreen buttons as a led notification system... It works with the thrill and has lots of features... Try that.

It doesn't have notifications lights. I thought after leaving my Blackberry that I'd miss the blinking light. After getting over the initial constantly looking at my phone to see a blinking light, I kinda prefer not having one as it's just another battery draining function.

Its called BLN (Back Light Notification) I had it on the Nexus S. And it really does light up your Bottom button lights like a notification light. But you need a custom kernel that supports it. Whoever can bake that in with a custom kernel then well will be set. but i did notice that the phone wakes up when a notification comes in. If i can remember correctly no other android phone does this unless you install an app.
I posted in the atrix forum..I have both the phones in hand..I'm so torn apart I can't make up my mind
I started feeling the limits..using the thrill I was down to about 200 megs of RAM...doing the same thing on Atrix I had 600 free
but there's something about the thrill that makes me want to keep it..I can't put my finger on it but it's something
who here has had both phones? like someone said..the thrill "kills all the phones"..
but the atrix no denying it is a monster..a sleek thin light weight monster.

There is a setting on the Inspire 4G that you can toggle on/off sort of thing that would allow the phone to be awakened when a notification came without the need for an app. However, the Inspire 4G had a notification light so I am not sure if there is any relevance between the two.
While we are talking about the Thrill 4G and its lighting....don't flame me for this lol...but how the heck do you turn on the LED light for the camera? I have looked everywhere and I must just be missing it. Any help would be awesome. Thanks in advance.

You mean for the camera? If your talking about taking 3D Pictures the Flash Does Not function when taking 3D photo's. Plus from what I have heard from people with Evo 3D's the flash actually tends to wash out the picture a bit so I am assuming LG did that intentionally. Although I would guess that someone will cook a MOD to get flash to function when in 3D mode. If your talking about a flashlight just download one of the many apps for it.
Going with the Atrix
this phone is so fresh and so new..
very interesting, and in many ways AWESOME
but it's just not there yet. The Atrix is everything I need in a phone right now.
but I am excited to see what happens. Right now there is almost zero dev support, LG isn't saying much either about updates, and AT&T is just excited about the new phone.
I am hoping that 2 or 3 months from now LG has released official Gingerbread or maybe even official Ice Cream Sandwich, that devs have come up with interesting hacks and mods to the original software, and that there's a healthy selection of good cases and screen protectors
Then I might just sell the Atrix and pick this up again.

Life after gingerbread upgrade...good or bad?

I was really excited about getting gingerbread. My phone has been flying and I figure it would be that much faster with the update. Well, not the case for me...the phone feels sluggish and slow. I have not been getting errors but slow. For example I have the weather widget, calender widget, and a couple of contact shortcuts on the main screen. When I open the web browser and hit the home key the phone takes a while and then the widgets (weather and calender) take a while to load. And this is just one thing. I tried taking the battery out. I tried clearing out the cache from everything. And killing extra items from running but still no go. I'm starting to miss froyo
How's your experience with the upgrade so far?

GB thoughts
Went from stock GB to GV 1.1.
Fantastic radio and data 25+ with Houston server/4G
Not one random reboot or crash
Not one update failed issue
Faster batt charge cycle and better life
Got rid of rare unresponsive screen input issue by installing widgetlocker app and by using SPB shell as launcher
GPS and BT much improved over Froyo
Excellent work on GV1.1 ROM MT!
I was also getting the slow down. I rooted and flashed gv but it still happens from time to time. Bt would also lose connection a couple of times during a conversation on a thirty minute drive. I'll be trying the supercharger next to see if that fixes things.

If you didn't do a data reset when upgrading, you should try that.
It sucks, I know, but download MyBackup Root ('tis free) and backup anything that's important; that'll make your life a lot easier. I'd encourage you to backup your apps and the app data separately, and then only restore apps you actually use, and only restore app data that you really need to have back. Resetting and then restoring everything exactly the way it was doesn't fix much, hehe.
MyBackup also lets you backup your SMS/MMS/Call Log/Contacts/some other stuff.
Immediately after the update, LGHome did nothing but force close. I did a factory reset to fix that. Now I have similar issues.
1. Battery life has gone down hill. I have everything off.
2. LGHome is slow. Started to use an alternative launcher which I do not really Fancy all that much. I actually like LGHome, but the scroll speeds have gone to crap.
3. I have tried the super charger thing but so far no difference at all.
4. I was hoping that GB would fix an issue with the email program and exchange. It did on my old phone, but nope. I still get a Password/ID error every time it checks for mail.
The great GB save seems more of a let down to me. My phone is slower, far more issues, and other than the fact that is says it is GB, it looks almost identical to v6 except a slight change in the apps drawer.
I am really thinking about rolling back to v6 with root.

Nothing against MT's work. He does a fantastic job. With this phone however I have not had great luck with ROMs and prefer to keep things stock for now. I do not want install a ROM over what may have been a bad flash. It would not be fair to him as I would comment negatively on his ROM unfairly when it was the base flash to begin with. Once I can get the v7 TOT and redo the phone entirely then I can verify my belief that the phone just did not take the update very well.
I am playing it safe for now and staying unrooted on GB. Once the zv7 TOT is out I'll feel better having that as a fallback.
I haven't had any other problems with GB other than the soft keys not lit after it boots up. Holding the phone up to a light source turns them right on.
I do miss all my apps which require root . . .

I just went 28 hours on light usage and still had 24% battery when I finally plugged in, I was also in the next county over night which has 4G. Market and LGHome are both stable now. Screen lag seems to be much better as well.

I wasn't on stock GB long enough to make a decision on good or bad...
I'm running GingerVolt 1.2 and while it's flying through things that had bogged it down previously...
it seems that the battery isn't charging as fast as it had been.
I'm building up to the 100% so I can calibrate the thing, which may remove the issue altogether, but it's moving at a snail's pace, as opposed to the jog it used to.
(I've had the thing charging for 4 hours and only moved up 20% in charge, where with zv4 I could have the thing nearly charged from the same usage.)
I doubt GB/GV was the cause, but I'm hoping it will clear up with the calibration.
So far, that's been my only complaint with the setup.

[Q] How is it to type with the accelerometer (tapping on the sides)?

When I was reading a review about LG Optimus 2X on GSMArena what I found REALLY cool is the feature in which you perform a little tap on the side of the phone to make the text cursor go precisely to the left or right.
What it feels like? I kept wondering what happens if you're typing on a bus though!
Used that feature dor the few days on stock... Works surprisingly good, the odd vibration is ignored, you really have to tap on a side to trigger the cursor movement. Waving the device around, sitting in a train on a rough ride etc won't do anything.
Loved that feature but, imho, since GB brought the blue "cursor-enlargement" it isn't really needed anymore.

I think the feature might be pretty handy.
It isn't that easy to reach the corners of the screen so when you want to put the cursor in the initial position of a line it'd be useful. Also my HTC EVO 3D used to refuse to put the cursor after the dot in a phrase in the end of the line (oddly when I went testing now I could do it flawlessly).
Anyway I'm looking to buy this phone to my sister that's why I got interested.

A couple of things I noticed off of the bat is that Knock On works every time after two taps. Isis does not work with root. There are a couple of games in this build: Andrio, deBlob, and a few extra apps that I can't remember right now (trying to keep root during this flash!). Overall it seems way smoother, but with few visual changes as expected. I'll report more findings later.

Smooth, not a jittery animation yet.. The touch response isn't as hyper-sensitive. My compass direction in maps is accurate after a couple slow spins(always 180 off in 4.2 for me)

Don't know if anyone else posted this yet... But with 4.2.2, the included emoji font that was shown when using a keyboard like SwiftKey was monochrome and hard to read. On kitkat, it's a huge improvement - gorgeous color, and it appears to include more choices. Very nice!
Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk
I noticed when you lose a data connection the 3G icon in my case since I was in a rural area the changes to a faded color and the up and down errors below disappear, which is quite different from 4.2.2.
I haven't noticed the GPS thing on 4.4.2 yet, but it affected me on 4.2.2. The odd 180 direction created many weird directions thinking I turned or going the wrong way. I travel a lot so that is a big plus.
There seems to be a lot more bloat in this one. Lots to disable between several amazon, Verizon, and other 3rd party apps. I did see a VMWare remote desktop app in Running apps. I don't like that one bit. I'll have to get Root Explorer to really clean some of those out.

I haven't noticed the GPS thing on 4.4.2 yet, but it affected me on 4.2.2. The odd 180 direction created many weird directions thinking I turned or going the wrong way. I travel a lot so that is a big plus.

Being new to Verizon, I'm not used to the abundance of bloat. I'm a little nervous about just deleting most of it because I have no clue what it's tied to, what it might break. I am disabling a bunch...but it's ridiculous IMO.
It is a bit much but that's carrier politics for you.
If your unsure what is safe, your best bet is to do exactly what your doing. I've deleted something on 4.2.2 and started getting a popup animation error every time I plugged in USB or headphones.
A "Kit Kat Debloat" thread would probably be a good idea.
GPS is solid on 24A. Much better then being redirected all the time. I just drove 1.5hrs and was never asked to get back on the highway or do a U turn in the middle of a busy intersection.

I think the only thing I noticed so far other than what has been mentioned...the settings button on the notification pulldown has been moved up top as well as the date and time.. Fixed a minor annoyance there. It seems much faster, but still looking through for things that may be different. Also, the GPS icon in quick settings is gone (replaced with location?) and the annoying icon in the statusbar is no longer there.
Edit*** anyone know if there is an issue with Kit Kat and Adaway? Can't get it to work

working well on mine.
When using GPS, instead of the ugly old GPS icon, I'm seeing a Google Maps Pin when location is being used. Pretty icon.

can't believe I didn't notice that before! That was my least favorite icon up there. Just need to get rid of that NFC icon, next...
I think the thing I've noticed the most is the auto brightness seems more responsive. Also have not had any speaker issues like reported on other devices getting Kit Kat. I have added Viper and Xposed. Time to start deleting some bloat. Mabe start freezing first in Titanium BU.?

You're probably going to get the plug and pop error (when you plug something into the usb port) when you add Xposed...I know I did.
This fix doesn't work anymore, it has to be updated: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2549002
Just tried my OTG cable, no pop sound. Maybe a setting in Xposed that I'm not using.
