(Help)Using AT&T captivate with no data plan. - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys so i just got the galaxy s ii and sold my captivate running cm7 to my roommate. We turned off mobile data and stuff i thought we were golden. But later that night he got a text saying he was auto put into a data plan. There was about 5 mins at the start i forgot to go to cm7 settings and turn mobile data off. I am going to call at&T and make up something to get when to take it off. So after will he be golden? Or is there no way around it.
Note* when he wants to use data he uses wifi . Otherwise it sent let him.
Thanks!!

Bump?

At&t will recognize the captivate via the imei number. Afaik no getting around the data plan for smartphone requirement.

No way to spoof the imei?

There are ways but you won't find the answer on xda.

Sadly AT&T is greedy like that. I know for a fact Tmobile PR doesn't care. =/

[Q] unlocking a captivate for tmobile

I'm thinking about buying a captivate for my wife but she is on the Tmobile network... I am aware you can unlock the captivate fairly easy to be used on Tmobile but I was wondering if you lose any functionality in doing so. I know that some 3g phones will only get edge if unlocked for the opposite network. (like the iphone for tmobile only gets edge). Thanks in advance
Also!! My gf is getting a new phone that can't have data. But! I was wondering, if I give her my extra captivate(after I fix the cracked screen) can I unlawful ock it and give it to her without it asking for a data plan? And sorry op, but I didn't want to start a new thread

If your phone is rooted you can unlock it permenently by installing galaxy_s unlock by helroz from the market as well as busy box. If you don't want the root option you may call at&t for that.
1.root your phone (search one click root for galaxy s and download to your pc)
2.download galaxy_s unlock & busy box
3.run busy box then galaxy_s unlock you must allow both apps with super user permission.

I think at&t has both apps blocked from the market. any chance you have a link of them? I'll try 4shared in the mean time.
Ya I know about that!! But will tmobile realize that its a droid and put on a data plan? I already unlocked my phone in using now, but I just want to make sure.

You might wanna take a look at this:

I have a captivate on tmobile and I am able to use the unsupported phones data plan for $10 per month. It's only 2g, but the point is that the network doesn't pick it up as an android phone and I'm fine with that. I doubt they'd make you get a data plan if you just used it without explaining anything because as far as I can tell the emei isn't registering with the network as an android phone.

try disabling the mobile data in wireless settings before popping up your sim and use wifi only instead.

I have been running my captivate on Tmobile since last August without any problems. It runs edge, but they have never noticed that I have an unlocked phone. $28 bucks a month is a steal for this phone.

Good news, I finally got the captivate to unlock and accept the tmobile sim. Everything seems to be working fine so far. No data on the plan but using wifi til I add data. One thing I'm really curious about is.... Now that the phone is unlocked and working, If I flash a custom rom (say cognition) will I lose the "unlock" ?
*edit* forgot to say how I did it... I just simply flashed back to stock 2.1, master cleared, rooted, installed busybox and galaxy unlock app, used the #2 method with the unlock app and it worked. PATIENCE IS KEY! ===> It takes a good 2-4 minutes for the tmobile signal to kick in so it may seem as if the unlock failed but it just takes alot longer than the at&t signal to kick in.

in wireless setting in your phone there is an option to scan and select wireless network simply scan after it will prompt you to select t-mobile or at&t since you want t-mobile select that option.

Dont think anyone will have to worry about this much longer. Lol

Am I screwed?

I just got a galaxy tab Sprint off ebay and it's still activated. 3g works. I don't think its stolen because i got the box complete with all the contents. my concern is i wont be able to activate this thing when it eventually turns off.
anyone have a similar experience?
You can still use it as a wifi only tab.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
I know, I would eventually like to add it to my Sprint plan.
Then what is the problem ? Here in europe you can use any phone you want with the plan you subscribe.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
that it may be linked to another account??
Why don't you just contact the guy that sold it to you?
Sorry but are you guys on drugs or something?
All you do is put another sim card in, Or am I mistaken and Sprint do not use sim cards or something?
It's a cdma version, so no sim card. But i think you can still use it with another plan. Try to contact sprint.

Using T-Mobile and national data roaming

Okay so I recently unclocked my crappy and now the T-Mobile network shows up under apns but it wont let me do anything on that network. So my first question is is there a way to change that. Probebly a stupid question BC I don't think an ATT sim can work on T-Mobile.
My second question is whether it not ATT charges for national data roaming.
Thanks for reading!!!!!
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App
ATT charge for something? Don't you know you need for to pay for the air you breath in their offices? I honestly don't know but If ATT can charge you can bet they will.
Ya haha that's my mindset too.

(WIP) [$1400+ BOUNTY] Port T-Mobile WiFi Calling for Nexus 4

What is this about?
The Nexus 4 launched without WiFi Calling support for T-Mobile USA customers. I'm starting this bounty to encourage people to port this feature to the Nexus 4. It has been done in the past, and there are even claims that the N4 was being tested with WiFi Calling support before launch.
For more read this: http://t-mobile-coverage.t-mobile.com/4g-wireless-broadband-service?uid=Coverage_3
Why should you care about this?
WiFi Calling will give all T-Mobile USA customers who use the Nexus 4 the ability to use their T-Mobile phone number to make/receive calls and text messages over an active WiFi network. As well, post-paid T-Mobile customers could avoid using their minutes, if they are on a limited or pooling plan, while using WiFi Calling. Customers need to ensure they have the "Free WiFi Calling" SOC attached to their line and a valid 911 address on file. The 911 address requirement also applies to pre-paid T-Mobile USA customers.
How can you help?
Simply reply to this thread showing your support to have this awesome feature ported to the Nexus 4. Optionally, you can let us know how much you personally would be willing to put up to see T-Mobile WiFi Calling come to the Nexus 4. Personally, I am staking $50 for this feature; however, you can stake any amount you wish, or absolutely none at all. You being here and reading this is good enough for me. But if it is at all possible, please at least reply to this thread. The more exposure it gets, the better our chances our of getting it accomplished!
Presently, the bounty is valued at $1400. The value of the bounty changes frequently as more people enlist their support towards the completion of this project. So, please consider helping out the entire community by showing your support in this thread. Even if it doesn't affect you at all, there is a vast amount of people looking forward to using this feature as soon as possible.
Thank you!
- Korey N.
I don't yet have one. I would be willing to pay for it (around $20) though if I get one. The thing making me doubt getting it is the OTG issues. Might get one anyway.
I'd toss in $10 (not the richest guy) because I get don't service in my house.
T-Mobile isn't too terrible here where I live, but not having WiFi Calling is a disappointment when you trace to places without coverage
Bounty
WiFi Calling would be great :-/
$10
Guys, my suggestion is to use Vonage. Uses your number and doesn't use minutes from existing T-Mobile plan. Works over WiFi and 4G/3G
If you don't mind having another number, there's always Google Voice and VOIP.

Back when I had T-Mobile, developers got Wi-Fi Calling working on the Nexus One and I think I had it on my Nexus S but root access was required because the kernel had to be modified. Don't know if getting it enabled without root would be possible.

But why pay for something like Vonage if I could keep my number and have reliable service via WiFi for free with WiFi-Calling? (Free with my current plan)

Dang, common misconception
Vonage Mobile is a free app that uses your current number and calls out via 3G/4G or WiFi.

I made a call to my dad who doesn't have the Vonage app... it worked...
And I used it on an unactivated phone
Just checked the app info... yeah idk why it says they need the Vonage app, maybe they mean for picture messaging and texts?
Also Vonage has 3000 minutes a month, so maybe if you get more friends the 3000 minutes will be raised for free?
Probably just an issue with wording...

My only question about Vonage's is when they call you will it go thru wifi! The only reason I want WiFi calling is because I get no reception in my house
I put up $10 for this bounty.

In your case, Vonage wouldn't be a solution because you can't receive calls with it.
See, a normal fix to this would be to reject the call then call them back with Vonage, but if you don't get service you won't even get the call.

Concerning Data

Okay so I was wondering if when my sister gets a s4 from her friend, will there be an extra charge from T-Mobile?
She is still on the old system contract, and her line plan was having 1000 minutes shared and unlimited texting but no data at all for her line. So is it possible to have a smartphone and use 100% WiFi only and not have to get charged extra?
This would be really helpful, thanks in advance.

there shouldn't be a data charge if using wifi. unless your on an airplane and they want to charge you 50 bucks for wifi. and what, her friend is giving her an s4? you should be nicer to your sisters friend.

No they don't. I was on a talk and text only plan when I got my Exhibit and went about 3 months with no data. In fact you can actually go on my t-mobile and block data to make sure you don't get charged.
